JUSo sorry to learn that Mick Compston, husband of Caroline Gillies Compston (McGoogans) passed away in November. It was a difficult time for the family as they also said goodbye to Caroline's sister in December. Many will have met Mick when they lived in the South of England and their circle of Cavalier friends increased when they moved to the Scottish Borders several years ago. Caroline writes that Mick had been ill and confined to the house for the last couple of years. Our thoughts go out to Caroline and the family.

 DOUGES GALLERY

1917583_391794557060_6113039_nJudy Gates was born with a rare gift that allows her to capture the personalities and beauty of dogs, cats and other creatures with a paintbrush to create exquisite works of affordable art that are destined to become family heirlooms.

The East Providence, Rhode Island resident has also gained a notable reputation as a breeder of quality Cavaliers, some of which reside in South Coast homes, where they have brought much joy and happiness to their human families.

Judy, who attended the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, purchased her first purebred dog, a Great Pyrenees, in 1968 when her former husband was deployed in Vietnam.“I didn’t grow up with purebred dogs,” she begins, adding that one of her childhood pals was a collie-chow mix named Lady. The faithful family companion roused the artist’s great interest in Man’s Best Friend and opened the door to a new world filled with fun and adventure, many wonderful friendships, and a multitude of colorful ribbons and rosettes. The respected dog fancier recalls that she was introduced to the Great Pyrenees as a child when one of these large white working dogs visited her backyard one day and spent a few hours lounging on the lawn. Her father explained that the breed was employed by shepherds to guard flocks in the mountains that form a natural border between France and Spain. Judy never forgot that impressive dog, and searched for a puppy once her then-husband gave her the okay to purchase a canine to serve as a companion while was away serving in the military.“I didn’t like the first dog show I went to, but a year later I had a show dog,” she remembers, adding that she campaigned four of the massive dogs to their championships with the help of professional handlers. The dog fancier’s focus changed to the Cavalier in the early 80s, which resulted in the development of a limited breeding program. Now age 70, she exhibits mostly at Cavalier specialty shows and has owned 10 champions of this charming toy breed that was developed in England, where these friendly canines have served as beloved family companions for centuries.“Ideally, the Cavalier is a very loving, sweet-tempered dog that accepts everyone,” the respected breeder observes. “They always love their owner best, but they love everyone else second best.”. In 1981, Judy combined her passions for art and animals and created Dogues Gallery Original Artworks, where she sells hand painted pillows, slates, keepsake boxes, Christmas ornaments and other products. She paints both purebred and mixed-breed dogs, as well as cats. The unique collectibles are often offered as prizes at specialty dog shows and are treasured by exhibitors and dog and cat fanciers across the globe. One of her favorite pastimes is to stroll along area beaches in search of paperweight-sized rocks weathered by ocean waves. The artist paints each beach stone to resemble a puppy and is inspired by the shape of the rock to depict the animal either in a sleeping or alert pose. For more information about Dogues Gallery Original Artworks, visit the studio on Facebook or e-mail: jgates8@cox.net

VytBereaved250px-Corynocarpuslaevigatus012dog owner Aprilanne Bonar is on a mission in New Zealand to raise awareness about a poisonous type of berry that killed her much loved Cavalier, Malo. The karaka tree, aka New Zealand Laurel, is now in season (January to April) and its fruit contains strong toxic levels. Malo became unwell on January 23 and began vomiting and having fits and died less than two days later. The berries are a major food source for wood pigeons but the fresh kernels inside them contain the alkaloid karakin which is highly toxic to other animals. Signs of karaka poisoning include weakness, back leg paralysis and convulsions that can lead to death. Symptoms can often be delayed by 24 to 48 hours.

11162583New Zealand Veterinary Association head of veterinary services Callum Irvine said karaka trees are endemic and widely spread across New Zealand. The berries' level of toxicity varies depending on the maturity of the tree and the climate. Berries from the previous year can remain just as toxic," he said. Unfortunately there is no antidote.
