One of Britain's biggest Veterinary charities is changing their treatment after a Cavalier was left with third degree burns. Alfie, was injured by a heat pad used to keep him warm while under general anaesthetic during an MRI scan.
Owner Lynne Edwards realised something was wrong when the 12 year-old started refusing food and she found pus oozing from his back. She took him to a local vet where staff clipped his fur and exposed severe burns.
The organisation which employs around 200 scientists, vets and support workers is now heating the pads in an incubator which allows them to control the temperature better. Lynne said: "I just don't understand how it could have been taken from the microwave and then put directly onto Alfie without it being noticed how hot it was. They have told me that they always warm them up in microwave but after what happened they have promised to change their practice. I am glad that they've now said they will do that but it took nearly a week for them to stop the practice."
Alfie, who is completely deaf, had the MRI scan on March 23 after a lump was discovered behind his ear. He is now on medication while his wounds heals, but could face surgery to remove some of the skins around the burn.
The Animal Health Trust confirmed their vets are now using an incubator to heat the pads. A spokesman said: "We pioneered the use of MRI in animals back in the 1990s and since then we have scanned more than 20,000 animals. In the last five years, around 3,000 of these patients would have had heat pads to maintain their body temperature. To the best of our knowledge, we have never seen anything like this before in any of the AHT's patients. We understand how upsetting this situation must be for Lynne Edwards and her family, and have carried out a full investigation. We have reviewed, and are updating, our Standard Operating Procedure for the use of heat pads. We are also standardising the way in which all heat pads are heated at the AHT. We also plan to speak with veterinary colleagues, external to our organisation, to see whether this issue is more widespread than we are aware. All of these will further reduce the risk to patients undergoing anaesthesia."
METROPOLITAN DIVA
Last week at the Metropolitan Opera House, the soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek, dressed as a peasant girl in a 1900 Sicilian village, wailed and moaned that she was jilted, jealous and pregnant. But the instant rehearsal ended, Ms Westbroek moved on to more immediate problems. With enormous fake lashes still glued to her eyelids, she exchanged her buttoned-up black dress for a gray hoodie and raced to her nearby apartment to take Ruby, her Cavalier for a walk. David McVicar, who directs the current Met productions, described Ms Westbroek as having “utter humility,” unlike the average diva. “She is generous to her colleagues to the fault of compromising her own stage work to enable them to feel more comfortable”. Well suited to a Cavalier then!

Facebook scare stories of men in white vans roaming the Retford area stealing dogs are nothing more than urban myths, say police.
Retford Police have moved to quash the online rumours and say no dogs have been reported stolen to them since last summer. Andthe force says well-meaning people sharing the stories are causing dog owners unnecessary stress and anxiety.
Inspector Andy Knight said "We've had a lot of calls from people worried about stories of travelling criminals coming to the Retford area targeting dogs or leaving chalk marks on properties with dogs in. But there hasn't been a single theft of a dog here reported to us since last summer. Insp Knight said he believes the stories have spread through social media from other parts of the county. "One lady told me she doesn't leave her house because she's worried about her dogs being stolen. That's understandable – dogs are a huge part of people's families and they have such a personal relationship with them. And we urge people to report anyone acting suspiciously or any dog theft to us. We just don't want people sat at home terrified of leaving because of something they've seen on Facebook. The last dog stolen in Retford was a Cavalier called Jacko, who was taken from Hallcroft in August. After a lengthy campaign to reunite him with his family, he was returned home in October.
Charity DogLost said the online claims were "extremely unhelpful. "These things go round and round on social media and we waste a great deal of time trying to dispel them," said a DogLost spokesperson. "The most prominent at the moment are the guy selling fish who has dogs in the back of his van; paint on houses marking where dogs are – that one came from Australia – and one about dogs being sold as bait for animal fights.
"Dog theft, though, is an enormous problem nationwide and people need to take some very simple steps to prevent it happening." The charity said people should never leave their pets tied up outside shops, leave them in their car or let them run around in the garden unattended for a long time.
If you have a pedigree dog, the charity says never disclose how valuable it is and if you feel like your pet is being watched by potential thieves, vary your walking route or walk with a friend.
DogLostalso advised people to register their dog's details on its website,www.doglost.co.uk
Across the Trent in Lincolnshire, there have been warnings to owners of working dogs to be on their guard. DogLostsays "those most desirable to thieves in the area are Labradors, Springer and Cocker spaniels and Lurchers. They will sell the dogs on quickly using websites such as Gumtree, Free ads and Preloved."

CAVALIERS ON THE BIG
SCREEN
New movie featuring two Cavaliers...Adaline is a beautiful young woman who suffers an accident that changes her life forever. She has remained 29 years old for nearly 8 decades. She lives her life running away, not letting anyone get too close to her or know her secret, not letting herself fall in love. But life has something different planned for her, and she must make a decision that will change the course of her life and expose the secret she has kept hidden for many years. A small but consistent thread that weaves through the film is Adaline’s struggle to hold onto something, anything. For decades she has had the same breed of dog, a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, yet it doesn’t get any easier when each dog passes. Cavaliers "Hunter" and "Riley" take turns playing the dogs.
