HAS ANYONE SEEN DAISY?

1781740-CC_DSC_5706

Virginia Barwell (Charlottetown) is distraught after thieves snatched a puppy from the garden of her home in Bourn, Cambridgeshire following a burglary days earlier and has launched a plea to find little Daisy who was snatched between 11am and 1pm on Friday 8th July 2016. The puppy was one of a litter of three and had already been bought by a family who were to pick her up on their return from holiday.

WINTER IN NEW ZEALAND

New_zealandJan Eatock (Darilance) writes "There was another successful outing for some members of the Facebook group 'Cavalier Chat NZ' who live in the Waikato area of New Zealand. They had a mid-winter 'on and off' leash walking around Hamilton's Lake Kainui on Sunday 17 July. After days of heavy rain it was lucky to catch this dry spell for the walk. On their way home a few members who had travelling long distance from Auckland stopped off at Jan & Andrew Eatock's for refreshments and more."

 CLONING A CAVALIER

20160705_Pets_800x600Anyone tempted to have their beloved pet cloned should think again, according to the scientist who created Dolly the sheep. Even a genetically identical dog or cat would probably be disappointingly different from its original counterpart, claims Professor Sir Ian Wilmut. "Before they start they should recognise that it won't be the same," he said. "I have a dog. If we had a clone which had been brought up under different circumstances, its personality would be different, apart from anything else." Cloning could not be guaranteed to produce a carbon copy even in terms of appearance, he added. His dog is a Cavalier, a tricolour.... "If she was cloned almost certainly that coat pattern will be different, even if it was a genetically identical twin, because it all depends on movement of cells during foetal development," said Sir Ian. "In appearance and certainly personality it's very likely to be different."  Sir Ian led the team that created Dolly, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell, at the University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute 20 years ago on July 5 1996. Britain's first cloned dog, a dachshund named "mini-Winnie", hit the headlines in 2014. She was copied from her "mother", a 12-year-old dachshund nearing the end of her life, by scientists in South Korea.
