WHAT'S IN A NAME

GI_136318_bella_pr_1Pets Best Insurance Services a leading USA pet insurance agency, has released its list of the top 10 most popular names for dogs enrolled with the agency in 2013.

Each year, pop culture tends to have a considerable impact on the names people select for their pets. Illustrating this trend, Bella was the No. 1 nameamong dogs insured by Pets Best. The increased popularity of the name Bella can be attributed to the well-known main character of the “Twilight” book and movie series.

While Lucy took the No. 2 spot for canines, other favourites in 2013 included classic dog names that remain popular throughout the years, such as Max, Buddy, Molly and Charlie. Although Bailey was the fourth most popular name in 2012, it slid to tenth place in 2013.

BARNEY HAS NO PROBLEM OVERCOMING THE OBSTACLES

  4162280396

Hayley Telling and her Cavalier Barney were jumping for joy after it was announced they were included in the England squad which will be competing in this year’s World Agility Open Championships, in Italy.

The duo have quickly made a name for themselves competing in – and winning – countless local and national agility competitions. But this is their first international competition.

Hayley from Rustington, West Sussex said: “Barney has achieved so much in his short time competing in agility. I am totally over the moon to have been selected to compete as part of team England.I think it is going to be an amazing experience for both of us and we are going to learn so much in our first international competition.”

"To prepare for the championships we will both need to keep very fit. For Barney this means lots of walks, hydrotherapy, strength exercises in his own little doggy gym at home, as well as seeing his physiotherapist to make sure he is as fit as possible. For me it means lots of running so I am able to sprint to keep up with Barney!”

Spaniel Gentle/Comforter Spaniel

  Story

A funeral home in Arizona has brought in a Cavalier therapy dog to help families through the mourning process.

Two year old Mollie is training for certification that includes learning obedience commands and overcoming any fear of objects she may encounter such as hospital equipment. Her training also includes the recognition of grief and how to comfort people.  It is thought that the idea of therapy dogs started in World War II as a way of lifting the spirits of troops and the wounded. It was Dr. Mayo of Mayo Clinic fame who saw how a visiting soldier's dog lifted spirits and actually promoted the healing process among the wounded. Dogs have helped people with Alzheimer’s, cancer and people recovering from surgery. They have helped children with learning disabilities or autism. Therapy dogs have even been used in
dentist offices to help patients that are afraid of the dentist chair.

The Funeral home states "With this concept, we have brought a therapy dog into the funeral home. If there ever was a place to promote healing, this is it. We are the first in our area to offer this type of care to our families. The best medicine always wags its tail."

Those of us who live with Cavaliers know how well they play the role as comforters....it comes so naturally, as history shows

HOW "ART" THOU?

....the work of Lavinia Fontana (August 24, 1552 – August 11, 1614) who was an Italian painter and regarded as the first woman artist, working within the same sphere as her male counterparts, outside a court or convent.

Portrait of Ginevra Aldrovandi's whose husband, the Bolognese senator Ercole Hercolani, died in 1593. Her elaborate mourning costume-with costly brocade, lace, and pearls-indicates her high social status. She holds a handkerchief, suggesting the tears she shed at her husband's death. The lapdog is her pet, but it also carries symbolic significance. During the 16th century, a widow who did not re-marry, staying faithful to her husband's memory, was often compared to a dog that was faithful to its master.

Curt Bucy from Nashville has passed away after a sudden illness. !cid_9B8AE7688ACD463B8918F9B6CD69A420@craigowlPCAlthough Curt was fairly new to the world of Cavaliers, because of his likeability he very quickly made lots of friends both in the States and in the UK. A kind and gentle man with a lovely sense of humour.
He was enjoying his time at shows and the success that was coming his way. Taken too soon. Our sympathy goes out to Clayton and the rest of his family and close friends. He will be missed.

RUSSIAN ARISTOCRATS

  Princess-Dondykova

Vlada Yakovleva writes from Russia "Dear Norma, I attach a copy of the watercolour work of Russian artist, A Grigoriev. "Portrait of Princess Sophia Dondukova, 1847" The dog she is holding is one of the little Toy spaniels that French and Russian aristocrats used to have - not one particular breed, but maybe a Cavalier ancestor"

ART EXHIBITION.....from Dennis Homes (Leogem)

The Kennel Club was formed 140 years ago and during that time it hasamassed quite a lot of dog paintings and other works of art such as figurines, engravings, trophies and all kinds of canine memorabilia. Those of you that have visited their Clarges Street office in London would no doubt have noticed the sheer number of paintings in various rooms and offices and also on the walls of the staircase. Just over ten years ago they opened their art gallery on the ground floor where many of their most noted pieces could be permanently displayed. Here you can see works by some of the world’s greatest dog artists such as Maud Earl, George Earl, Richard Ansdell, Arthur Wardle and Cecil Aldin. They have also staged quite a number of dog art exhibitions over the years including The Golden Retriever in Art, The Fox Terrier in Art, Royal Dogs, Dogs in War plus several Christmas Art Fairs when artists can exhibit works for sale. Their most recent exhibition was devoted to The Newfoundland and ran from last August up until 10th January and included several paintings by Sir Edwin Landseer. From 3rd February until 10th June they will be staging an exhibition devoted to The Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Of very special interest to all Cavaliers owners will be The Toy Spaniel Exhibition which will run from 14th July until January 2015. This exhibition will feature paintings, various art objects and some rare photographs of King Charles Spaniels and Cavaliers, tracing the history and development of both breeds in works of art. The exhibition is being organized by Dr Andreas Schemeland Tina and I will be assisting him in what we hope will be a very interesting and informative exhibition and a ‘must visit’ attraction for lovers of both King Charles Spaniels and Cavaliers. We will be giving more information and further updates in 'Chatterbox' nearer the time.
