HOW "ART" THOU?

!cid_image002_png@01CF3186

"Lady and Spaniels"etching and stipple on chine collé by Thomas Landseer ARA (1795-1880). It was published in 1841 and is a portrait of Miss Ellen Power, niece of Lady Blessington. The original picture was painted for Robert Vernon ("an art patron, collector, and public benefactor")  and was presented to His Majesty The King of the Belgians by H.R.H. Prince Consort. approximately 18½ x 22 inches...with the Hamshere Gallery.

Ellen (‘Nelly’) Power (b. c.1817) was the niece of Lady Blessington. With her elder sister Marguerite she lived with Lady Blessington and with Alfred, comte d’Orsay. Landseer was a frequent visitor and is said to have proposed to Nelly. On 13 March 1840 he wrote to d’Orsay, telling him that he had got into a ‘scrape’ with Queen Victoria for staying away from Buckingham Palace to draw Miss Power.

the engraving is approximately 18½ x 22 inches...with the Hamshere Gallery.

The West of England Cavalier Club Ch Show, held in February in Weston Super Mare, is the 1st Cavalier specialty show in the UK calendar. The West Country had recently taken the brunt of the excessive rain and dreadful floodings that the UK had been experiencing but the weekend of the show saw a dry, bright day with even a hint of sunshine. The venue is situated quite far West so the entry was made up of mainly Midland, South East, South West and Welsh exhibitors with a smattering of people from further North. Distance and cost plays a major factor in entering shows these days and the far flung shows such as those in Wales, Scotland and the more extreme parts of England can see their entries smaller than the more well situated show venues. Frank Kane, a well known "All Rounder" and one of the "voices of Crufts" judged Bitches whilst June Hazeltine (Juzandia Cavaliers) did the Dogs. There were 189 Cavaliers entered and during the lunch break Debbie Coole (Jolainey) did the Special Awards  clsasses. Below is a photo of the final line up of winners plus some other fun pics in and outside the ring.

CAITLIN, HER CAVALIER and the

Kkkkkk

Caitlin & Codi

Trudi Coniberefrom Exeter in Devon has nominated her god daughter Caitlin Channon, who is 11 years old, for THE YOUNG KENNEL CLUB OUTSTANDING YOUNG PERSON AWARD 2014. The Shaun McAlpine Outstanding Young Person Award was introduced by the Young Kennel Club to acknowledge the achievements and promote a positive image of young people within the dog world. The Kennel Club wants to recognise and celebrate its young dog enthusiasts and the award is presented annually at Crufts to a young person who has achieved something outstanding within the dog world. Here is her nomination...

"I Nominate Caitlin Channon for the Shaun Mcalpine Award because I feel she is a very hard working young lady, both with her homelife and her life with dogs. Caitlin has had a passion for dogs since the very young age of 18 months , where she would often be found sitting in their beds cuddling them or following them into the garden to play. At the age of 5, she asked if I could teach her how to show dogs, as she would really like to have a go – I told her to come back and ask again when she was 6 years old if she was still interested.  On her 6th birthday she phoned me up and said “ can I start learning now? “ So began Caitlin, the young handler. She started to train with one of my dogs at the weekends – her mum brought a dog to show as well. She started training in October 2008 and entered her first handling competition at Devon County Show in May 2009 where she came 3rd and quailified for Richmond semi finals (something she has done every year since). Next saw Caitlin take over showing her mum’s Cavalier as she could no longer show him due to ill health. Caitlin is currently a young carer for her disabled mum and does this as well as looking after their dogs at home, going to school and showing most weekends. Her Mum has many health issues which mean she needs a lot of help at home with almost all household tasks and on some days, some personal tasks. Caitlin is always willing to help her mum when and where she can. She has worked so hard over the last 5/6 years to be where she is today. In Feb 2012 she was given her own puppy by her parents, a Chihuahua Longcoat named Charlie. He was 5 months old when he came to live with Caitlin and had never had a collar or lead on, so Caitlin began to train him and with lots of patience she had him in the ring showing just 1 month later. Continuing to work hard, in March 2012 she qualified for the YKC handling finals at Crufts  and came 3rd in her group and just one week later she again qualified for Crufts 2014.  Caitlin is also seen at most shows handling for other people. Anything from a Chihuahua or Cavalier to an Ibizan hound or a Norwegian Buhund , and has recently been asked to start handling a Bulldog and some Shetland Sheepdogs. She attends ringcraft training most Wednesday evening where she is very helpful in any way she can be – often being asked by adults if she would just the run their dog for them. She is on the junior Sub committee for Exeter & County Canine Society where she helps at shows setting up , taking down and running many of the events including 2 Open shows a year. Caitlin will also be competing at Crufts 2014 in the YKC ring in the Handling Finals with her Tricolour "Codi" aka Faulklea Secret Obbsession. GOOD LUCK, CAITLIN
