BUNTY GREEN (HEATHERSIDE) PASSES AWAY IN HER 97TH YEAR....RIP

JOYCE"BUNTY" GREEN

A light went out this week with the passing of Bunty Green who enjoyed great success with her Heatherside Cavaliers for over 4 decades from the 1940s up until the 90's. She played an important part in the nurturing of the breed and together with her husband Geoffrey, they were stalwart supporters and great ambassadors for our breed. Our condolences to their son Robin and daughter Patience. Bunty Green will long be remembered for all that she did for Cavaliers in the early days. She gave us our finest hour when Ch Craigowl Silkience won the CC under her at Crufts in 1992 and long after Bunty stopped attending shows we kept in touch as she read the dog press and was always keen to learn how the dogs, especially our Tricolours, (her favourite colour) were doing. RIP Bunty....a special lady.

SANDRA'S SUMMARY FROM SLOVAKIA

Uvod1a

"It is eight years since I was last in Slovakia and I was pleased to see a real improvement in the dogs. I judged the boys and BIS and David did the KCS's and the girls. The Open Dog Class was really lovely and each of my best colour winners would not look out of place at Championship Shows here in the UK. BIS was a lovely Ruby dog, Independent Flowers City and Best Bitch was another Ruby, Ch Flower Fair of Sevijean's.
Our hosts Edo and Vierra Stloukal were so kind and nothing was too much trouble for them. They took us to Vienna on the Sunday morning where we all enjoyed the performance of the wonderful Lipizzaner Stallions at the Spanish Riding School. David and I then spent the the next two days seeing the sights of Vienna before coming home on Tuesday"

MAE THE BEST DOG WIN

SORATA Mae West Nordic Champion

Joan Pagan's Ch Sorata Mae West JW (Russmic Reggae Music At Sorata X Kimark Mi Amiga at Sorata) is currently in Norway with Elizabeth and Ken Hardy of the Master Famous Cavaliers. Elizabeth writes "We are so proud of this beautiful girl. She was made up to Norwegian Champion by Hans Boelaars (Lamslaag) and to Swedish Champion by Joakim Ohlsson (Hackensack). Since Mae had already two titles in Scandinavia, we took a trip to Finland to attempt to get her Nordic title. Paul and Jill Allitt (Tillashby) went on a cruise 4 weeks ago and on the first night aboard the ship, Paul had a major heart attack and was taken to the medical centre on board the ship. He was not stable enough to be flown home to hospital, so they disembarked in Barcelona where Paul underwent surgery. He is now recovering well at home and although unable to work for a while, will hopefully be fit and well again in a few months.

Jill, a traumatic time for you both, best wishes from all your Cavalier friends and here's to Paul's speedy recovery

DAM FINE PRODUCER

RosetA bitch is limited to producing perhaps a handful of litters in her lifetime so is unlikely to compete on equal terms with a male dog who is popular as a stud. The often unsung brood bitch heroines can play a big part in the production and there have been several over the years who have shown their capability and have been recognised for their contribution.

Caroline Ackroyd Gibson (Toraylac) writes about one such bitch.

Dido 080722 013 "Toraylac Dido born in 22.10.2005 has been a very special girl for me. She is by Loranka’s  D’Artagnan out of another excellent brood Toraylac Exquisite and descends from an extremely strong bitch line going back to Ch Harana Christa of Toraylac and my very first cavalier born in 1983, Roxanna Litina of Stonepit. The girls have so little chance to make a big impact on the breed, as opposed to the stud dog, but I think that this proves just how important it is to concentrate on quality girls who might or might not be show dogs. "Dido" is mismarked but has never passed this on to her progeny. Her very special mate has been Maibee Perfect Touch of Charnavale and together they have sired 10 pups of whom 8 have made an impact on the show world including top winners, Toraylac Perfect Passion JW 2CC’s 4RCC’s, Aust.Ch Toraylac Masterpiece, BIS winning Toraylac Mastermind (Poland), Toraylac Masterstroke (France),Toraylac Sebastian (Italy).

And I am so proud of another Dido daughter, Toraylac Henrietta, 208029_325565277541770_1329070849_nowned by Marlen Blessman, who at 10 months old at Germany’s most important show won the Bundesjugendsiegerin and German Junior Champion (VK) and more recently took the CACIB at Hannover under breed judge Simone Frankenberg and is now a VDH Junior Champion."

She then went on, 2 days later, to win BEST IN GROUP and RUNNER UP BEST IN SHOW at the Tasmanian Kennel Club All Breeds Championship Show. These results gained "Sabre" her Supreme title, now known as Supreme Ch Matmor Fun O The Fair.
She is the first Cavalier bitch to gain this title which was introduced in July this year. To gain a Supreme title, a dog must gain 1000 points at Championship shows including 10 Best In Groups or/and Specialty Best In Shows. 'Sabre' is co-owned with Jodie & Glenn Wilshier (Cavlamour). Not to be out done,  Ch Matmor Duke Ellington won the DCC at both shows.

There may only be a few still around our Breed who knew Mrs Sybelle Davis and her Gotha Cavaliers who lived in Milton in the Newark area.  In her late 80s, she sadly  passed away on 12th October 2012. Until two years ago she still had a couple of Cavaliers.  The funeral will be at Sherwood Forest Crematorium at 3pm on 7th November 2012.  The most memorable dogs that she owned was her Eyeza Paean of Sunninghill. Gillian Greenall rang me with the news and should anyone want to make a donation in respect of Sybelle's memory, these should go to the HUMBERSIDE CAVALIER RESCUE. Our condolences to her family at this sad time.

      A MUST READ

      Adp_adp

"Touching and amusing in equal measure. W. Bruce Cameron’s "A Dog’s Purpose" examines the love shared by canines and their people from the canine’s point of view. This book takes readers on a journey through the dogs life —or rather, lives, because this very special dog lives and dies several times, searching always for his life’s purpose.

Starting off as a pup in a stray’s litter, the young dog has his first interaction with humans in a dog hoarder’s yard. There he learns to love people, but after Animal Control arrives, he suffers the sad fate of dogs deemed “unadoptable.” After being euthanized, he awakes in a new litter with a new life ahead of him, becoming Bailey, the beloved pet of eight-year-old Ethan. Embarking on the most pivotal period of his existence, he learns the satisfaction of being a “good dog” and experiences the most pure, joyful relationship he will have with a human. Bailey not only adores Ethan, he risks his life to protect him, and after years of devotion to his boy, he is sure he has fulfilled his purpose. But when he awakes again in a new—female—canine body, she finds that her journey is not yet finished, and she has more to learn than she realized.

Cameron’s exploration of the world through the eyes of a dog is clever in its humorous touches—"Bailey’s" conclusions that cats cannot be trusted and horses are completely unreliable are hilarious—and poignant in its depiction of a dog’s innate desire to please humans.

A Dog’s Purpose is a beautiful celebration of our four-footed friends’ big hearts."

An exhibition featuring a painting of a dog with aristocratic connections is taking place at WR Harvey Antiques in Witney in Oxfordshire. The Beauty and the Beasts exhibition includes English antique furniture from 1670 to 1830 and a collection of antique paintings.A highlight is a painting by George Laporte, animal painter for the King of Hanover, of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel bred at BlBlenheim Palace in Woodstock. The shop’s owner, David Harvey, said: “You can tell this was very much a loved dog, because it was wearing a red velvet collar with a gold padlock. It is also a sign of the esteem that these animals were held in that you would get one of the top animal painters to paint your favourite spaniel." The collection of animal paintings in the exhibition belongs to collectors John and Pat Stanley.

       SUPER  'STAR'DOM

      Supreme Star
Great news from David McCullough and Raewyn (Caribelle/Dellcara) in Victoria. "Australian Ch Eireannmada Distant Star by Gr Ch Miletree Distant Dream, is now a Supreme Champion. She came out of retirement at almost 8 years of age and can be seen above winning BOB and clinching the title under breed specialist Meredith Clegg (Coatsville). 'Star' came to live at Caribelle when she was 10 months old and is co owned with her breeder Greg Browne. Raewyn kept insisting I go and look at the “Bertie” puppies that  Greg was running on. 'Star' came home with us that day .... and the rest, as they say, is history. A multiple Group winner & Toy Specialty BIS winner .... it is her Specialty record that we are so proud of, an outstanding record of 5 Best in Shows & 4 RU Best in Shows. A true “diva” and at times, as most know, very “trying” but she is and will always be very special to me. 'Star' is the second Supreme Ch sired by "Bertie", the other being our Sup Ch Dapsen Make My Day. A big thank youto all who have supported and followed her career."

It seems only yesterday that Fyrnrose French Silk with Ellisiana(Fyrnrose Facination x Fyrnrose Silent Wings) and proud owner Sheila Skc12Hindle won the Bitch CC at SKC under judge Terry Nethercott (seen left, and below with Brian Rix and Ch Ricksbury Royal Legend - the Dog CC winner). TALES OF HANNAH AND LOIS -the  comforters

       P1020569

"I’ve been a bit quiet of late as a dear friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and as she has no family she needed to be cared for by her friends. Margaret is now in what is so elegantly termed an “end of life” bed at a local nursing home. She has owned Scottish Terriers all her life, but loves my Cavaliers girls and I sent her a card with a picture of Hannah and Lois on the front. One of the nursing staff saw it and asked me if I would like to bring the girls into the home to visit Margaret. What a refreshing change to find an establishment that doesn’t regard dogs as a health hazard. Margaret was delighted to have doggy visitors and the Staff Nurse (who, it transpires, owns a Cavalier) took the dogs into the lounge where they were hugged and cuddled by the thrilled residents. I don’t know who enjoyed the experience most! As we were leaving the manager came out of his office. I thought we were in trouble, but he talked about his tricolour, his Blenheim, his ruby and his two Bichons Frise. We’ve been invited back next week!

'Hannah' is Timsar Miss Conduct, daughter of Ch.Timsar Misbehavin’, 'Lois' came from an unknown breeder. Her owner simply walked into our Vet’s surgery and asked if they knew anyone who would give a good home to her Cavalier puppy as her partner had left her and she had to return to full time working. I still lunch regularly with the girl’s mother and am invited to the girl’s wedding next year. Cavaliers give more than comfort, they make us friends too.....from Joyce Hall in Merseyside

!cid_6166C6600641426586F93A29F73155FF@craigowlPC (2)This very special evening of the Top Twenty Gala and People's Choice Awards began with the Parades of CKCSC, USA Champions, New Champions, Winners of MaAmerican-flag-thumb60203jor Awards and Junior Warrant Title Holders (October 1, 2011 to October 1, 2012).  It was amazing to see so many champions and champions in the making in one place.  Each dog received a personalized certificate to mark the occasion.
The Top Twenty Gala was a social event and a competition between the twenty highest pointed dogs in the Club, plus the three top Cavaliers in each color class. The twist was that the three judges were unknown until they were introduced at the Gala. The following three mystery judges were from three different categories:
      1.     Licensed Cavalier Breeder/Judge:  Mary Ann Hogan, Stavonga Cavaliers, UK
      2.    CKCSC, USA, Breeder and/or Judge with an in-depth knowledge of the breed:  Barbara Garnett-Wilson, Laughing Cavaliers, USA
      3.    Licensed all-breed judge, not a breeder nor owner of Cavaliers:  Helene Neitsch, Banstock Bullmastifs, USA

      Anne Start

The competition began as all nineteen Cavaliers entered the ring together to give the judges the opportunity to evaluate them and give them an "Initial Impressions Score".  This score would be used in the event of a tie. Then the dogs, followed by the bitches, were individually brought into the ring.  Each exhibit was examined by each judge on the table, free stacked and gaited around the ring.  At the conclusion of the evaluation, each Cavalier was presented with a personalized long streaming rosette.

The Judges’ score sheets were accurately and confidentially tabulated.  There was only a 1-point difference between first and second place and two points between second and third place.  A small glicee of Lindsey Bittner Graham's artwork depicting four colors of Cavaliers was given to the winner.

Below, in winning order, are the three Top Twenty Gala finalists:
      Winner-Mitchel

1st     Ch Aranel Revelation  (Gwen Wells)

      Runner Up_Liz O'Brien
2nd  Ch Chantismere Chandos of Valentyne, JW (Elizabeth O'Brien)

      Michelle & Judge

3rdCh Jayba Black Eyed Susan (Pat and Michelle Lander)

The spectators determined the winners of the People's Choice Award by voting for their favorite Cavalier being shown in the Top Twenty competition.  106 ballots were cast, and, unbelievably, there was a THREE-WAY TIE!

The following Cavaliers were the People’s Choices Award Winners (in no specific order):
      •    Ch Chadwick Scotch on the Rocks at Hudsonview, JW (Laura Yassky & John Glynn)
      •    Ch Jayba Black Eyed Susan (Pat and Michelle Lander)
      •    Ch Veribas Point Break (Karen Cusick)

Each winner received a large rosette and a small glicee of Lindsey Bittner Graham's artwork to commemorate the event.

      FUN IN FINLAND

Removals-to-finlandSheena Maclaine (Pennygown) writes....."Ken Town and I had the honour of judging in Finland at theFinnish Cavalier Club Speciality at Jyväskylä on the 10th November 2012 followed by the Jyväskylä International Dog Show 11th November.Index

Fortunately for us this was a very well organised event as we were very reliant on the travel agent, Flightsbiz, provided for us by the International event host, Jarmo Hilpenen.  There are no direct flights to Jyvaskyla – for Ken this was a flight from Edinburgh to Heathrow to Helsinki to Jyvaskyla and Andy Vella and I, the last 2 flights.  We all met up at Heathrow and arrived in Helsinki with about 40 minutes before our ongoing flight and a 20 minute walk to the boarding gate.  We arrived at the gate with a throng of people, not realising our flight had already been called as there was no plane in evidence. There was no call for late passengers as you so often hear at airports and we stood patiently waiting.  A plane drew up and everyone got to their feet ready to board….Norwegian Airways flight to Stockholm!  What had happened to our flight?  Had we changed boarding gates?  No – it turned out that there had been a shuttle bus taking people to the plane from the gate as we discovered later when we eventually caught the 23.40 flight – a bone shaker of a plane with propellers that had to be de-iced before we went anywhere! There were many frantic calls to Jarmo and Flightsbiz who were marvellous and managed to transfer the flights for us, as there was no Customer Service desk for our British European flight and the check-in desk could not help.  Flights sorted, a delicious bottle of red and dinner in the restaurant helped us relax in to the spirit of a more promising weekend!

As we whiled away the time, chatting as you do, Ken, somewhat foolishly told me of his imminent retirement from the toil of his boarding kennel and that he would have to find something to do to maintain his fitness.  Some years ago Ken ran the Edinburgh 10K – take a look at the picture of this handsome chap sporting his shorts!   Always looking for ways to fund raise for Cavalier Health and  never missing an opportunity, particularly whilst Ken was mildy “under the influence”, I struck whilst the iron was hot! Scanner_20121115_133745-page-001Ken has kindly agreed to get in training for the 2013 run and sponsorship forms will soon be in circulation.  He has promised not to start the training before Crufts as he will need to be in the peak of health to stand on his pins all day for that event! In the meantime all bribes can be taken in the form of sponsorship, gratefully received for Cavalier Health.

My penance was to provide this report on behalf of both of us so back to Cavaliers in Finland!  - Numerically strong – 205 exhibits at the Club Show – and no sign of numbers dropping.  A mixed bag of quality with the bitches superior to the dogs with many of the boys were just far too big and heavy boned.  It was not only the very obvious high tail but the low set on and lack of drive behind that was so evident.  Rubies of exceptional colour but so many with the brightest pink noses they would glow in the dark!   However there were some quality exhibits that would hold their own anywhere in the world. Enjoy some photos of the International show and Special show...

A show to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the first Australian Dog Show was held in Hobart Town in Tasmania in 1862.This came not long after the first recognised show in 1859, held at Newcastle on Tyne in the UK, it proved to be the start of a countrywide phenomena and the start of regulated breeding and canine animal husbandry in Australia. Dog lovers in Australia have recently converged on Hobart to celebrate 150 years of dog showing and the recent show featured 500 dogs and 105 different breeds.

I was welcomed warmly by the members and had great fun. The scrumptious lunch was followed by a presentation of various annual awards and then we played a game called "Dirty Santa" which involved the exchange of Xmas gifts.  I was indeed fortunate to come away with a limited edition print by local artist and Cavalier owner, Carol Lesley.

I had gone over to attend the Cavaliers of the South/ Midwest shows in New Orleans that had Michael Levy, Markus Kirschbaum, Klaus Vorderstrasse and Pat Landers judging. From Atlanta it was an 8 hour drive and we did this in convoy with some other Cavalier exhibitors stopping off at a Crackerbarrel country store to eat lunch and walk the dogs. 041

NEW ORLEANSI met up with my roomates Michelle Chapman (Ellemich) and Carol Jenkins (Hollambrie) at the hotel in New Orleans where the CAVALIERS OF THE SOUTH /CAVALIERS OF THE MIDWEST club show weekend was being held. The girls had travelled over from the UK with judge Michael (Levy) and after a rocky start, when Michelle and Michael's luggage was delayed, the rest of the trip was a great success. Girls just wanna have fun, you know!!

The Cavalier community lost several loved ones in recent weeks. Our condolences to their loved ones who are bearing the loss.

David Williams (Hutsbank) passed away only a few months after his wife Joyce who died in September 2012 Photo taken at WELKS in 1984 IMG_0002

We also lost Notherner Marjorie Dean who exhibited and bred under the Wildgrove affix.

Averill Russell (Kernewek) lived in the West Country and was a staunch supporter of the West of England Cavalier Club of which she was President. She died on 14th January 2013 aged 92.

Sarah, daughter of the late Peter (Bembridge) Watkins & his wife Pearl, passed away recently. She was only in her 40's and had been bravely fighting her illness for 3 years. I am sure a note or card from the people who know the family would help Pearl at a difficult time.

....and just this week we heard that we had also lost Betty Dowd. Another successful breeder/exhibitor from the South West whose most famous Cavalier was her beautiful home bred tricolour bitch Ch Tregarron Caprice. Seen here judging at Border Union in 1982

Ch Miletree Constellation owned and bred in the UK by Peter and Ruta Towse was thrilled to see "Sonny" win Germany TOP DOG ALL BREEDS 2012. Having already achieved his UK title, he then holidayed with Klaus Vorderstrasse and Markus Kirschbaum in Germany for a spell and did so well at German Champion shows, especially at Group/Best in Show level, that he saw off all the other top German competition and was given the honour of going GERMAN DOG OF THE YEAR. This prestigious title meant he and Klaus had the opportunity to represent Germany in the Eukanuba World Challenge in November in Orlando, Florida USA.,,,,and he did this superbly getting into the last 12 and was a great ambassador for the Cavalier breed.

      DARCY PLAYS DASH

      QV_statue_3_carousel_4

Queen Victoria was born at Kensington Palace and spent her childhood there under the watchful eye of her mother. It was Kensington Palace where she was informed of the death of her uncle King William IV in 1837 and became Queen, and also the place where she first set eyes on her beloved Prince Albert. It was Queen Victoria who first opened Kensington Palace, her childhood home, to the public in 1899. In 2013, a Cavalier set foot once again in the Palace.

Veronica Hull  (Telvara) had a phone call from Kensington Palace asking if she could provide a Tricolour Cavalier for a 3 day production taking place at the Palace, featuring "Queen Victoria and her Cavalier Dash".Dash-commissioned-by-her-mother-1836-with-text

Veronica writes  "It was great fun.... and the young 'Queen Victoria' fell head over heels in love with my "Darcy". I pre-warned them he wouldn't do tricks... and they assured me he would just have to be handled by actors, walk down a staircase with a 'Queen's Aid' and be cuddled by 'the Queen'. After the finale there would be a photo call when 'Dash' would be petted by the audience. "Darcy" wore his diamante collar and a Schwarts Crystal tag which gleamed under the Palace lights... and he was as good as gold.

The theme of this period piece is Victoria's Diaries.... and of course in these now historic documents, she refers to her favourite little Spaniel 'Dash' all the time . Each day the actress playing the Queen's role, opens a different silver bauble, like an Advent Calendar ..... and today it contained a photo of her much loved parrot...

I had to hide out of sight, but managed to get a few photos.'Darcy' did the breed proud... he was a true gentleman and fell into his roll like a professional.... but we all know he was just doing what Cavaliers do best ... making friends with complete strangers of all ages who after the event wanted their pictures taken with him , so his photo will go home to all parts of the world.

Cavaliers for lifeDear Cavalier friends, in 2012 we started with the breeding program under the name “Cavaliers for life”. In order to realize this program we require a substantial budget. This budget is needed for the full‐time researcher at the University
      and for the working costs.
Thanks to the scientific commission of the Belgian Kennel Club, the Dutch Kennel Club, many breeders and individuals, we have been able to raise a certain amount of money. Unfortunately this amount falls short to start the project. But a windfall has blown our way. The Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology (IWT) of the Flemish Government has granted a specialist
scholarship for a period of 4 years to Katrien Wijnrocx of the research group. “Livestock Genetics” from the University of Leuven (KU Leuven). The subject is to be "Sustainable breeding of dogs, breed specific strategies
for the reduction of hereditary health problems in dog breeds".
The goal of this scholarship is to develop a “mate select type program” that will be based on Estimated Breeding Values (EBV”s),taken from all types of heath testing results, including DNA, eye tests, MRI scans,
cardiologist reports etc, and to offer a reduction of the inbreeding coefficient. The Cavalier is the centerpiece of this program.
The program has the full collaboration of “Cavaliers for life”. The Cavalier will be first breed in the world to use this mate select system.
Thanks to the funds for this scholarship and our own financial resources it is now finally possible to start with our health program for a period of 4 years.
We must grab this unique opportunity with both hands. To achieve this project, we need the support and co operation of all breeders, Cavalier clubs, Kennel clubs and studbook references.
We are therefore calling upon all the Cavalier clubs from the various countries to announce this project to their members and we invite everybody to join the project and in this way contribute directly to the future of our breed and to that of all dog breeds.

      “JACK” - DELTA THERAPY DOG

      Lynne 3 (213x159)

Gary and I moved from Brisbane in July 2012. Au We hitched up the wagon literally and took our 3 dogs and drove 1896 kms to our new address in Victoria. During the long drive south I kept wondering what I would do with my time whilst Gary was away during the day and on the very first day we arrived I noticed the local newspaper in the letterbox  - it contained an advertisement for DELTA THERAPY DOGS to be trained to work in the Geelong area. It was a sign!  I looked at my Tricolour boy Jack and thought – we can do this! Jack is just one of those beautiful Cavaliers that will do anything for the person he loves. 2 weeks later we attended the big TESTING DAY FOR DELTA DOGS.  This rather harrowing event was staged  on a dreadfully cold and windy day inside one of the huge show ground sheds used to house the cattle during Show events.

The dog’s temperament is assessed in the following manner

The handler walks the dog on a collar and leash through a crowd simulating typical Nursing Home situations i.e. elderly folk making extremely loud and erratic noises, banging their walking sticks and waving them around as they talked,  racing around in wheelchairs and wildly bumping into each other with zimmer frames – altogether CHAOS!   Throughout this process they screech and yell at each other like maniacs.  They crowd around the dog hemming he/she in, and the dog is then marked on their reactions.

The handler leaves her dog with an assistant and walks 50 metres away, turns around and calls out the dogs name loudly – the dog is expected to return to his/her owner immediately.  If the dog wanders off, or runs to anyone else other than his/her owner then they would be marked down.

The Assessors then put a plate of food on a low table and instruct the Handler and her/his dog to walk past the plate closely instructing the dog not to eat/touch the food.   This temptation proved too much for many of the dogs on the day. Jack actually stopped, looked at the food and then at me and asked the question …. a firm “NO” ensured we passed the test. One week later Jack and I were initiated and mentored into the Boorapool Nursing Home in Geelong. Jack took to his visits like a duck to water.

His patience and empathy with residents is amazing. From my perspective, I am very alert for out-of-control wheelchairs and frantic walking-stick wavers!  Instead of talking with their hands they tend to wave walking sticks around to emphasize a point.  For those poor residents who are extremely ill and incapacitated, I lift Jack up onto their beds and they extend a hand for Jack to lick or he will lean forward and give them a doggy kiss. I cannot emphasize enough how much joy these very special dogs give to the elderly.  They are now in a situation where they cannot keep a pet and a regular visit from Delta dogs provides them with those special moments of joy where they can touch or stroke the dog and the dog in turn, responds with a happy tail wag or a doggy kiss.   Jack is the master of both.

I feel I must give an example of how these dogs melt hearts.  One very hardened resident at the Home, his name is Aiden, in earlier days had owned several thousand acres of land which he farmed for 52 years.  He had, of course owned working dogs and was, I gather, really tough on those dogs.  When I was introduced to Aiden with Jack, he just stared at him and said “call that a bloody dog” and launched off into graphic descriptions of how hardened his dogs were and how they fought like tigers over their food etc.etc. Anyway, Jack and I persisted in annoying him by greeting him every time we visited.  Finally, after the 4th visit, he relented and bent down to pat Jack – Jack gently lifted his front legs and rested them against Aiden’s knees and licked his hand then lifted his head and stared into his eyes.   It has been a love affair ever since.  Jack is now the best dog this side of the proverbial Black Stump!

Jack also participated in the Classroom Canines Program during the latter part of 2012.  This involved a one-on-one reading session with two children who were having problems reading in front of their classmates or teacher.   Normally such children come from abusive or broken homes and these children can relate to dogs and their handlers because dogs do not criticize or correct – dogs, through the mouths of their handlers (and there is a great deal of acting involved) encourage the children, vocalizing and assisting where required, and receiving in return, incredible results.   Those two children after 3 weeks of “reading with Jack” were able to read in their classrooms

The Bupa Nursing Home was part of the GALA parade in November – this involved entering a float (a huge flat top truck with 6 residents safely seated in armchairs on the back) driven from one side of Geelong City to the other through the main streets.    Jack was the only live animal in the parade – he was incredibly popular and must have been patted on that day by at least 1000 people – he was not at all phased and licked dozens of hands – (and survived!!!)  but the children couldn’t get enough of him.    We walked for probably an hour or so, with the exotic “Belly Dancers” in front of us and a Bagpipe Scottish Band close behind. There were 76 floats in the parade.  Cavaliers are remarkable little dogs. My feet were sore that night and Jack slept like the dead!!!

It has been a wonderful experience working with Delta and I thoroughly recommend that those with just a little time on their hand and a willing, obedient Cavalier, take up this cause.   Jack really looks forward to the visits as I do, together we make a good team.  Cavaliers are ideally suited to this work.  Lynne Heyden

CKCSC USA & AKC Ch Chadwick Embrace JW, owned and bred by Anne Eckersley, was born 12 days prematurely, along with five other puppies who weighed from 1.5 – 3 oz.  "Kiss' and her sister, "Lily", were the only survivors. Wherever Anne went, they went, in a heated papoose along with tube feeding paraphernalia. At a Christmas party the guests were surprised to find that they were not hamsters but instead were actually puppies! Soon the two began to nurse and here she is, a strapping, fit girl who was only shown once as a puppy but since April 2012 has gained her Jr Warrant, became the top winning female in CKCSC USA for 2012 and finished her AKC Championship.

Winning Cavalier Best of Breed this year at Westminster was the German bred Ch Bonitos Companeros Halli Galli who has been living the "life of Riley" with Ted and Mary Grace Eubank in Texas. This 4 year old blenheim has had great success in the USA with Ted at the helm, and with his "vacation" over, he returned home after the show, to his owner Nicola Morrison in Denmark. His breeders Markus Kirschbaum and Klaus Vordestrasse and Nicola travelled to New York to cheer on their dog and the trip was well worth it when he won Best of Breed against some of the best competition in the USA.

IN MEMORY OF FREDDIE....A SPECIAL FRIEND

      Images c

Sandra Ireland has a touching tale to tell...."On 23rd February 2013 at the West of England Cavalier Championship Show held at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, West Super Mare, the Club were delighted to receive from Pete Boulter, a cheque for £1560, to be divided between Cavalier Rescue and Welfare and the Health Fund.

      Our Show 006

Back in November, I received the following email from Pete to tell me that he had been fund raising with the R.A.O.B. (The Royal Antedeluvian Order of Buffaloes)

Pete wrote “I am a member of the R.A.O.B. and last year was the senior officer for the Devonshire Area. I chose two charities for my year of office, one being the Macmillan Nurses and the other being your charity. The reason behind my choice is I had to have my cherished Cavalier “Freddie” put to sleep. He was my pride and joy…..he went everywhere with me. He was only seven when I had to put him to sleep. That horrible day will haunt me for the rest of my life. To say I was heartbroken is an understatement. Never a day goes by without thinking of him.”

Freddie was a “puppy farm” dog and Pete, and his wife Angie, met his “breeder” at the Severn Bridge with the excuse that it would “save them having to travel to North Wales.”  He had early onset MVD, Syringomyelia, dry eye and had to have a tumour removed from the top of his tail. All through Freddie’s illness he was treated by vet Rosie Macgregor who sent this poignant tribute to dog and owner.

“They say that the best matches are owners that are like their dogs. So - what about Pete and Freddie? Well, they were two opposite ends of the size scale (Pete was a rugby prop forward!!!) so there was no match there! Pete definitely doesn’t have a long flowing coat, fluffy tail or a wet nose! But for courageousness through adversity, friendliness and strength of character to keep fighting through times of difficulty, and a love for each other that transcends the sad loss of Freddie, they were incredibly well matched. The Boulters were the most dedicated and sensible owners that I have ever met, very tuned in to Freddie and his needs, and because of their nursing care I’m sure he lived much longer than he otherwise would have. Freddie in turn was the most adorable dog, good-natured and fun, who returned their love in bucket loads. It says something about them all, that they are still talked about in the practise, and we’ve not seen them for two and a half years! Pete should be very proud of what he has achieved, both personally in his care for Freddie, and in the money he has raised for very good causes.”

Freddie was such an unlucky dog to have had so many problems, but how lucky he was to have had such wonderful, loving and caring owners as the Boulters (seen above). We hope it won’t be too much longer before they can share their lives with another Cavalier. The money Pete has raised will help many other Cavaliers. Rescue dogs often have problems that are expensive to treat. The Health Fund helps to pay for yearly heart tests and MRI scans, plus also supports research into hereditary diseases .I hope he will read this and know how deeply grateful the Club is for his generous gesture.Sandra Ireland, Chairman of the West of England Cavalier Club

"Ruthie" is still lovely. She is regal, and the rest of the pack still defers to her, although I have never seen her so much as lift a lip. She is show pointed. However, she was indifferent to showing, preferring to socialize with any wheelchair-bound spectators or senior citizens as a true comforter spaniel. We concentrated on showing her brother to his championship. Her sister had two Master Agility Championships, a CD, and a Companion Dog Excellent title. This litter was extraordinary in many ways. I am thankful for the good genes from Ravenrush, Maramond and Craigowl."

CkcsbdgThe first week in March started off with the show that attracts a multitude  of Cavalier enthusiasts from all over the world.....the Cavalier KCS Club Championship show at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry.  It was good to see Geoffrey Porter (Ringcreevy) over from Northern Ireland to judge the dogs. After a serious bout of ill health we were all pleased to see him back in the ring looking so well. Sandra Ireland-Cooke (Charnell) was his co judge and did bitches. The catalogue showed 412 Cavaliers were entered and the whole day had a buoyant feel. The doldrums that had been evident  in previous years had been blown away and the atmosphere was sunny. I have never seen so many European and Scandinavian dogs exhibited at this show and of the 35 Champions paraded during the lunch, 23 were UK champions and the remaining 12 were titled in other countries.FLAGS The applause was thunderous for each and every one. Alan Hall (Alansmere) was there ..looking every inch the Peter Pan of the Cavalier World. So hard to believe that it was in 1973 (40 years ago) that John (Evans)and Alan won BEST IN SHOW at Crufts with CH ALANSMERE AQUARIUS.

From all accounts, this seems to have been one of the most enjoyable Club shows in recent years. The camaraderie between the "home" and "away" Cavalier addicts was lovely to see.Images I still feel the UK have the best in the world Cavaliers (yes, I am biased!) but maybe to keep it that way, we need to look to our laurels, as the rest of the world is nipping at our heels.

ImagesThere is lots of Cavalier hospitality shown to overseas visitors in the week between the CKCSC Championship show and Crufts....this year Maryann Hogan (Stavonga) threw open her home in Hertfordshire to an evening of entertaining. Food and liquid refreshments were generously offered to guests. A jolly event enjoyed by those who after the Club show had the stamina to attend another get together.

Crufts 2013 ended a week where lovers of the breed overdosed on CRCavaliers! Judging males was Anne Rennard (Deranmar) and judging bitches was Ken Town (Barsac). Here are some pictures from around the ring, benching area and eventually the bar where many helped Michael, Mark, Aum and Rachel celebrate their Best of Breed and Best Opposite.

At the recent Cavalier Health Liaison Committee meeting, Clubs voted to ask the Kennel Club to include all results from the EF CC/DE DNA tests in the KC's registration system and in their Health Test Results Finder and published by the Kennel Club in the Breed Record supplement. Furthermore the Clubs requested that all CKCS that are not already heritably clear should be tested for both EF and DE/CC prior to breeding and that at least one parent of each litter is free of each mutation, to ensure no affected puppies can be produced or registered.

The Club recognised the AHT's findings that it is perfectly safe to breed with carriers, provided they are only ever mated to clear dogs and that we should actively encourage breeders to include their carriers in their breeding programmes so that the genetic diversity of the breed is not compromised. The two mutations are inherited independently, so it is perfectly safe for one parent to be a carrier of one mutation and for the other parent to be a carrier of the other mutation, or for one parent to bea carrier for both mutations.

The Cavalier Clubs would like to thank the AHT for carrying out this work which represents the culmination of several years research that has been funded by several Breed Clubs, individuals and organisations including theKennel Club Charitable Trust.

Pond's Cream was invented in the United States as a patent medicine by pharmacist Theron T Pond of Utica, New York, in 1846. Mr Pond extracted a healing tea from witch hazel which he discovered could heal small cuts and other ailments. After Theron died, it would be known as "Pond's Extract."

Ted and Mary Grace Eubank (Pinecrest) are gracious hosts and along with co hosts, Bruce and Shirley Henry (Shirmont), they opened up their lovely home outside Dallas and provided a BBQ on the Sunday evening for the Cavalier people who had travelled to Texas for the weekend of events. A splendid way to bring the weekend in Dallas to a close with the greeting "Y'all come back now" in typical Texas style.

I am very proud of her as yesterday she becomeDutch Veteran Champion. She started her show career as a puppy and became Puppy of the Year in the Cavalier Club Netherlands Club. Between her first and second litter, I showed her very succesfully and she gained CAC's and CACIB's in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg. On her 8th birthday we celebrated with a birthday cake and as she was now a veteran I decided to show her in the veteran classes. She was shown 4 times  and within 3 shows she became Dutch Veteran Champion. The last time she was shown was in Belgium where she got the title Best In Show Veteran. With a big smile and a waving tail she said goodbye to the showring, now she can enjoy her so well deserved champion title!

      UK TOYDOG

      UK TOY

Every year, theUK Toydog Society hold a very popular show at New Bingley Hall, Stafford. Tom Mather and his team of hard workers strive hard to put on a successful show and they certainly pull it off. 23 Toy breeds are scheduled and it is an Aladdin's cave for lovers of the smaller breeds. There are also Obedience, Junior Handling, Good Citizen classes,  Puppy, Champion and Veteran Stakes. Not much, if anything to moan about. Parking, lighting, heating, food, ring layout, toilets, all tick the boxes as far as I am concerned and I know many agree and feel this is a show they do not like to miss. The judges this year were Rick Aldous (Aranel) and Pauline Sidgwick (Paulian), doing bitches and dogs respectively. The Cavaliers are  solely housed and judged in the Prestwood Centre that is linked to the main hall, just a short walk away....so it feels like a mini Cavalier show. The entry was 90 dogs and 117 bitches. Enjoy some photos from the day..

      GRETNA GREEN WEDDING

      598882_10151295443851770_1149080552_n
On their way to Crufts 2013, Christine Groundwater and Donnie Borwick decided to tie the knot at Gretna Green in Scotland. Gretna-green-wedding-blessings

Christine and Donny and their Cavaliers live in Kirkwall which is the biggest town and capital of the Orkney Islands, off the coast of northern mainland Scotland.

      History Of Gretna Green Weddings

Many couples have chosen to runaway to Gretna Green for their wedding.  In 1754 Lord Hardwicke introduced an act Parliament which basically prevented anyone in England marrying under the age of 18 without their parent's approval. Nothing would stand in the way of young love, so when the brides and grooms learnt they could marry in Scotland provided they were over 16 they flocked to the nearest Scottish wedding venue which more often than not was Gretna Green.

In the early days the most important person in the village was the blacksmith and he also doubled as the local minister. Such was the volume of weddings taking place, he soon got tired of constantly having to change before conducting a wedding. Instead he took the couples into his workshop and performed a religious wedding ceremony over the anvil which is where the history of anvil weddings comes from. In 1940 all "irregular marriages" were stopped. However in 1994 the ministers once again started performing weddings outside of churches The tradition holds strong to this day, with as many as 5000 couples choosing to get married in Gretna Green each year.

The CKCS CLUBCkcsbdgwas approached recently by Past Pleasures Ltd to provide Cavaliers on each day over the Easter Weekend for an enactment of Charles II and Queen Catherine of Braganza's honeymoon at Hampton Tumblr_lxpl3kkc7o1qbohcko1_500
Court Palace in the year 1662. Charles also installed at the palace, his retired Mistress Barbara Villiers as Keeper and Chief Steward of the Mansion. Although he recognised no fewer than 14 illegitimate children, he never had a legitimate son or daughter to inherit his Kingdom. Charles was famous for his love of his Toy Spaniels and no wedding celebration would have been complete without them.

Andy Vella, Sheena Maclaine, Jan Taylor, Barbara Billington Melissa & Madeline Evans, Deirdre Thomas, Hilary Bartlett, John Hubbard brought along their Cavaliers to participate. The dogs were all handled by various actors/actresses who paraded them around the courtyards during the day and talked to the public whilst acting out their roles as the King, Queen, Nell Gwynn, lady in waiting etc. It was a very worthwhile exercise for all. It brought the history to life, gained the engagement of the children, socialised the dogs and promoted just how good they are as a breed with children.

Old_dogs_are_the_bestSince 2009, when the idea took shape, members of the Cavalier Chat Forum (www.cavaliers.co.uk) have donated £20 to the oldest Veteran Cavalier shown at each of the Club Championship shows. This has been a  great success. To see the proud smile on the faces of the recipients is well worth it, I can assure you. I doubt very much that the prize money is the reason. More like just sheer pleasure and joy for the accolade being bestowed on their very special senior who may or may not have won a class placing. The honour being they were the oldest there. Some have looked very fit despite their advancing years. 13 years plus has not been uncommon and I can honestly say the dogs all look like they enjoy their outing. So please think about it and if you have a golden oldie sitting on your sofa who might just like a trip out to a show, join us. We are not advocating dragging out frail, old timers who would rather be curled up at home, but the ones who are fit and would love the excursion. Photos of the winning recipients will appear in Chatterbox

Here is the route map. The run is round a rather large hill in Edinburgh  - so it's not easy!
      800px-Arthur's_Seat_from_Edinburgh_Castle

      Some trivia :-

That rather large hill seen here is called Arthur's Seat, situated in the centre of the city of Edinburgh about a mile to the east of Edinburgh Castle. The hill rises above the city to a height of 250.5 m (822 ft)

It is often mentioned as one of the possible locations for Camelot, the legendary castle and court of King Arthur.

In 1836 five boys hunting for rabbits found a set of 17 miniature coffins containing small wooden figures in a cave on the crags of Arthur's Seat. The purpose has remained a mystery ever since the discovery. The contemporary belief was that they were made for witchcraft, though more recently it has been suggested that they might be connected with the murders committed by Burke and Hare in 1828...

"Hello, Norma, I have been completely overwhelmed by the amount of cards, flowers and words of comfort I have received from our Cavalier friends. I would very much like to thank everyone in person and hopefully I will be at the shows later on in the year to do so, but I am finding it difficult to come to terms with losing Darrell. We always thought he was going to get better. Would you be kind enough to put a thank you for me in Chatterbox."

      EAST IS EASTEastern

The Eastern Counties Cavalier Society held a successful show at St Ives near Cambridge on 13th April with 238 Cavaliers in the catalogue for judges Sue Brooks and Michael Hegarty. Apart from enjoying the dogs there was more ways to spend a satisfying day.... Tombola, Raffle, Heart testing, trade stands, refreshments all day. Ming and Katherine Li and Team Pascavale were celebrating their 3 new Champions by supplying cake and bubbly for the masses. Sian Watts had another gorgeous cake for her 50th Birthday. All in all....even if you didnt win in the ring there were other ways to bring a smile. This was the first of 2 shows being hosted by the Eastern Club. They are organising another event on 7th July when it is their turn to host the Joint CKCS Championship show. More details are emerging and these will appear next week. Now for a flavour of the show last week.....

      A LITTLE BIT EXTRA

      Veteran_award_&_envelope

Rosemary Powell decided to go the extra mile, and as well as donating the Cavalier Chat Forum £20 for the oldest Cavalier at the West of England Cavalier Ch show, she made a splendid certificate (plus it's own envelope) beautifully hand scripted with a gold/copper metallic pen. The delighted recipients are Ruth and John Conneally (Coedgwylum) from Swansea and their almost 13 year old girl 'Beanie'. Ruth has been poorly but as soon as she feels better, will let Chatterbox have a photograph of their lovely Veteran.

NEW DNA TESTING SCHEMES FOR CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIELS

Following consultation with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed health coordinator, on behalf of the breed clubs, the Kennel Club has approved new official DNA testing schemes for Curly Coat-Dry Eye and Episodic Falling in the breed.
These tests are offered by the Animal Health Trust (www.aht.org.uk) and Laboklin (www.laboklin.co.uk) and further details can be obtained directly from them.
Copies of all future test certificate results issued by the laboratories will be sent directly to the Kennel Club, where the test result will be added to the dog’s registration details, which will trigger the publication of the test result in the next available Breed Records Supplement. The result will appear on any new registration certificate issued for the dog and on the registration certificates of any future progeny of the dog, and also on the Health Test Results Finder on the Kennel Club website.
If the owner includes the original registration certificate for the dog (not a copy) then a new registration certificate will be issued, with the DNA result on it, free of charge.  Please send any DNA test certificates to Health & Breeder Services, The Kennel Club, 1 – 5 Clarges Street, Piccadilly, London W1J 8AB or scan and email copies of the certificates to

How could I refuse! I am not sure if they will all reproduce well, but will give it a go. Here is one of the earliest..taken I assume from a dog publication. Some super images of yesteryear Cavaliers. Thank you Pauline, we are indebted to you.

      FIRE, ICE AND CAVALIERS

      IN ICELAND

       Ice

It was a pleasure to be asked to travel to Iceland to judge at their Cavalier Club show. I had never been before but had heard the country was spectacular and I was not disappointed. The flight on Friday to Reykjavik was 2 hours thirty minutes from Manchester and when I landed I could see from the plane that heavy, horizontal rain and gale force winds awaited me! The landscape was so different to anywhere I had seen and it was a fascinating drive from the airport to the Grand Hotel.DSC_4685

When I awoke on Saturday morning, the rain had been replaced by falling snow, so I began to believe what they say, that in Iceland all kinds of weather can be experienced in the one day! By the end of the day the sun was out. The show venue was ideal for judging. A Pet Store with a large adjoining hall. Roomy and light. I met my three stewards Sophia, Soley and Brynja who made my day all the easier by speaking and writing perfect English. The Club was formed in 1995 and since then they have organised several Cavalier shows with breed judges such as Leni Louise Nyby from Sweden and Fiona Bunce, Molly Coaker, Anne Reddaway and Caroline Ackroyd Gibson from England with entries ranging from 50 – 90. In 2005, the clubs 10th anniversary, there was a two day show with the judges Annukka Paloheimo and Marja Kurittu from Finland with a record entry of 105 cavaliers on Saturday and 94 on Sunday. Caroline judged in 2008, (before the bank crisis) with an entry of 92 cavaliers. The judge at the show in 2011 with 51 Cavaliers, was a Schnauzer specialist from Germany, Giza Schicker. The Schnauzer club had a Speciality Show and offered the Cavalier Club to join them. The first two cavaliers imported to Iceland from Scandinavia was 1991.

There were 81 Cavaliers entered for me to assess and considering that there is approx only 200 Cavaliers registered with the Icelandic Kennel Club this was a good turn out. With 5 absentees, there were 5 puppies, 28 males and 43 bitches waiting for me. I had to grade all the 71 adults present and the break down was 41 Excellent, 26 Very Good and 4 Good.

      For those interested in statistics

      Dogs 28

      Excellent   19

      Very Good  9

      Good   0

      Bitches 43

      Excellent 22

      Very Good  17

      Good   4

At a Club show such as this, there are always a number of family dogs who come along for the day, as they want to be part of the event, but most had no great expectations for their pets in regard to show potential. But it was nice to see them enjoying the day. I had a Student judge who assessed the dogs after I had finished with them and she also wrote critiques.  Rapturous applause met the appearance and walk round of the oldest Cavalier in the Club. She was born in Iceland and is called Hlinar Beatrice (by Leelyn Freebie out of Leelyn Mon Amia). So parents were bred in the UK by Mick and Lil Shinnck. The proud owner is Gretar Freyr Gretarsson who I am told was just a child when his mother bought her for him, so they grew up together. DSC_4615Breeders are Edda Hlin Hallsdottir and Finnbogi Gustavsson. She is a very pretty Ruby girl who at 15 years young looked adorable and received a lovely bouquet from the Club.

With the economy and strict quarantine laws in Iceland I quickly realised just how many difficulties breeders face in their breeding programmes and I drew the conclusion that they should be commended in utilising their limited resources so well. 4 weeks quarantine and no bitches in whelp allowed in the quarantine station.

I thought the males on the day had more quality than the females, and my general impression was

1…. there is a small number of top quality Cavaliers in the Club

2…..there is a majority of decent, but average dogs

      and

3….there is a small percentage that were pet quality.

I did a report giving my general impressions for the club's website http://www.cavalier.is

and also for their FB page

Taking time out of their busy schedules to show me the sights on the Sunday was much appreciated. The people I met were warm and welcoming and the country is both beautiful and memorable.
