 DOG SHOWING IN JAPAN

The official ceremony of PedigrJpee Awards 2012 was held by the Japanese Kennel Club at Royal Park Hotel in Tokyo on 17th April 2013. This prize is given to the annual ranking number 1 dog/bitch in each breed.

If you get BOB at a Japanese championship show you are awarded points depending on the type of show. The highest points are given at  International shows and exhibitors collect these from January
to December. As there are many professional handlers in Japan, amateur dog fanciers find it tough to compete against the professionalism. But in Cavaliers, Takashi Matsumoto triumphed with his two Blenheims...Japanese Champion Miletree William Takashi and  Int Champion Hollambrie Olivia for Takashi.

TAKE THAT

GCH Grantilley Take That had a great day under judge Frank Kane at the American CKCSC National Specialty in Arizona. Not only did 'Robbie' win Best Veteran in Show but gained the first Award of Merit meant he was right behind the Best of Breed and Select Dog in the placings. Not bad going for an old timer who reaches 8 years old very soon.Owned by Lana Adair, showed by Elaine Mitchell and bred in the UK by Rita Bidgood.

The only Cavalier to have received this accolade. We wish him a great Birthday....we know he likes to enjoy himself and am sure he will celebrate in style. Cheers, Alan.

304287_2565209334575_1384405436_3076769_659551370_nThe Northern Ireland Cavalier Club show held in Ballyclare, County Antrim in May is a must pilgrimage for many Cavalier show folk who make the annual trip, arduous in some cases, with their Cavaliers. They go by car and ferry leaving at non friendly times of the night because this is one of the friendliest enjoyable shows on the calendar. This year was no exception and the atmosphere was charged with elation as the Club was celebrating their 30th anniversary. MapI left home with Ellen Renaud and Bill Moffat late on Friday night to drive the three and a half hours to Cairnryan in Scotland to catch the 4am ferry to Larne in Northern Ireland. Crossing the Irish Sea takes 2 hours. On board we met up with John and Eileen Gaskell from Midlothian in Scotland and John and Louise Hubbard from Essex. Whilst the men managed to fall asleep at the drop of a hat, us women stayed awake chatting. It was a beautiful morning arriving in Larne at 6am and the drive to the Six Mile Leisure Centre was a short one.  During the crossing, the dogs have to remain in the cars on the cardeck but are neither perturbed nor anxious by the adventure. At the venue we met other UK Cavalier travellers who had come over on the overnight ferry from Liverpool to Belfast. Sue Brooks, Chris Knight, Lesley Kilcoyne, Marisa Colavecchia Fish, Cherill Deans, , Virginia and John Barwell, Philip Lovel, Sarah Rees and Lorraine and the Loranka Crew. Inside the Sports hall, tea, coffee and home made scones welcomed our arrival and were available all day. Kay Finlay, the Secretary had slaved away in the kitchen the previous day to provide this lovely touch and it was much appreciated. The committee work hard to make the show a success and they succeed admirably. The judge this year was Dr Annuka Paloheimo (Anncourt Cavaliers) who had come over from Finland. The Deputy Mayor of nearby Newtownabbey ceremoniously opened the show  and he spent a short while walking round chatting to the people and petting the dogs. Then it was a case of "LET THE GAMES BEGIN".

The lovely Lisa aka Ringcreevy Rosapenna who won for her owner/breeder Geoffrey Porter, the accolade of being oldest Cavalier exhibited. She looked amazing. Born 10th June 1999 by Ringcreevy Royston and out of Ringcreevy Ring A Roses. At almost 14 she skipped around the ring with ease and deservedly went home with the special prize of £20 donated by Elspeth Glen on behalf of the Cavalier Chat Forum. She won this prize last year and doesn't look a day older. Such a great ambassador for our Breed. See you next year, Lisa....

It was a great show with plenty of Irish "craic" (Irish word for good conversation). The return journey home seemed loooong but the good humour and high spirits that was carried away from the show, kept us going. Roll on 2014.

SAD PASSING

224103_467953406576598_562500212_n

Pictured in 1985...

The news that Ellis Hulme (TONGEMOOR),one of the top Toy Breed Specialist and All Rounder judges, had passed away this week was unwelcome and I, like so many, am saddened to realise that Ellis will no longer be around. His quiet professionalism, depth of knowledge in so many breeds, unassuming and friendly personality is a great loss. If there were more people with the integrity of Ellis we would be richer in the dog game. I will miss seeing his smile and conversation. He had a long connection with Cavaliers and his opinion was held in high esteem. RIP, Ellis.

Pebblecombe Poetess at Coedgwylum owned by Ruth and John Conneally is in the money. As reported previously, she won the £20 special for the oldest Cavalier at the West of England Cavalier show in February. Looking good, Beanie, and well done to our UK Clubs for acknowledging and rewarding our Vintage Cavaliers.

Ol.......there is an extra show award in the pipeline for all Cavaliers aged 10 years and over. The Estonian Cavalier Club in conjunction with other Group 9 breeds are holding a Specialty show weekend on 18/19th May in Tallinn. Judging the Cavaliers are Simone Frankenburg and Claudia Holweg from Germany and myself and the other breeds are in the hands of Zofia Konderla from Poland and Carole Garhöfer from Austria. This year commemorates the 10th Anniversary for the Estonian Cavalier Club and the Committee are trying to make this as memorable as possible. They have a record entry and as the show is held outdoors, hopefully the weather will be favourable. A nice touch is that people, if they want, are asked to dress up in period costume. Any period prior to 1950! If there are any that take up the challenge it will be worth capturing on camera. Can't wait.

DYNAMIC DUO

Abbie Elliot
What a day for siblings, Aranel Galaxie and Aranel Sirius who although based one in Finland and the other in Sweden, gained their Championship titles on the same day! Galaxie won her last CC in Finland and finished her Finnish title whist her brother Sirius also won his last CC in Sweden and finished his Swedish and Finnish crowns.  Galaxie, proudly owned by Pauliina Lantta, continued her success by finishing 4th in the Toy Group under Nicholas White. Sirius lives in Sweden and is owned by Jonathan McLennan. Both bred in the UK by Rick Aldous and Mark Smith.

THE ESTONIAN CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL CLUB

 Logo

It was a pleasure to be invited to Estonia to judge at the Cavalier show in Tallinn DSC_4868on 18th/19th May 2013. I had never been before but had heard it was very picturesque and charming and I was not disappointed. The flight from Newcastle to Tallinn via Amsterdam was quite long and it was midnight on Thursday before I arrived at the airport to be met by welcoming smiles from committee member Terje Erdmann and fellow judge Simone Frankenberg (Welfenhof Cavaliers) who had just flown in from Germany. Two of the other judges, Carole Garhofer (Austria) and Zofia Konderla (Poland) were already at the hotel and the remaining judge Claudia Hollweg (Rosebury Cavaliers)also from Germany was due to arrive the next day. Our comfortable hotel was situated in the suburbs of Tallinn and after registering we arranged to meet for breakfast the next day and then go into Tallinn for a spot of sightseeing.

DSC_4885

Friday morning was bright and sunny and after breakfast all four judges were chauffeured into the city by mini bus driven by Terj and walked around the old town.DSC_4859 It was the perfect weather and my camera worked hard taking in all the beautiful sights. We stopped for cake and coffee in a celebrated coffee shop which was very rustic with stone walls and stone flooring and it almost felt as if we were in a cave. The cake and coffee was every bit as good as Terje described.
Then we walked through the town, stopping to shop (had to buy some Baltic Amber earrings) and made our way uphill to a point where we could see all of Tallinn before us. Fabulous view. The cobbled streets and olde worlde charm made it very special. I even had a go at a medieval version of Hoopla.DSC_4875

970278_10151414334076611_379698824_n

Then it was time to go to the airport to pick up Claudia and then back to the hotel for dinner and an early night as the next 2 days of judging promised to be hard work with lots of concentration needed.

On Saturday morning, the sky looked full of rain clouds but we crossed our fingers that the weather would be kind. DSC_4886
The show venue, held at a school where the playground was marked out with large show rings, was only 5 minutes’ drive and we were there in plenty time to start judging. The first day was the 10 year Anniversary show of the Estonian Cavalier Club and the judges were

Norma Inglis….Males, Best Head, Best Mover and Best Junior, Best Veteran and Best in Show, Oldest Cavalier, Best Cavalier bred in Estonia.

Simone Frankenberg…. Females

Claudia Hollweg….Babies, Puppies, Brace, Breeders and Progeny

Twinned with the Anniversary Cavalier show was a Group 1X show where Carole, Zofia and Claudia judged the other breeds.

My stewards were very efficient and we got along well. They tolerated my simple demands with good humour and their English speaking and writing was excellent which made life easier for me. DSC_4906

Whilst Simone judged all the bitch classes and Claudia the baby, puppy, brace, breeders and progeny classes, I tackled the 54 Cavaliers males (only 2 Absentees). I then had the job of picking Best in Show, Best Veteran, Oldest Veteran, Best Junior, Best Mover, Best Head and Best Cavalier born in Estonia.

From the 54, 34 were awarded Excellent, 18 Very Good and 2 Good made up from

5 Rubies ….. 2 Excellent and 3 Very Good

5 Black/Tans….. 3 Excellent and 2 Very Good

13 Tricolours…….10 Excellent and 3 Very Good

31 Blenheims……19 Excellent, 10 Very Good and 2 Good

It was a compliment that as well as Estonian Cavaliers, many had made a long journey from other countries such as Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus.13422_260805640731490_110725649_n Most Cavalier Club shows attract enthusiastic show goers as well as those who have family dogs.  They all want to be part of the occasion and are of equal importance and while the pet dogs may not win high accolades, their owners feel (like us all) that they take the best dog home at the end of the day! I had a Student judge Svetlana who followed me around like a shadow and I hope she learnt something about our breed.

I was looking for a small, balanced ,well made dog with a typical Cavalier head and expression who showed he was fun loving and could move well. I tried to appreciate the whole dog and not allow myself to fall into the trap of fault judging. One flaw did not stop me considering the whole dog. It was bizarre that the very first dog I judged had all these qualities and like a benchmark he stayed in my mind throughout the day. At the end I found nothing that pleased me as much and he took BEST IN SHOW to the owner’s obvious delight. Bred in Estonia and at 9 months was at his first show. I hope his show career goes from strength to strength. He has lots to offer.

There were a number of points that concerned me in the dogs that I judged. These weaknesses appeared more often than I would have liked.

Size…A small well balanced dog is what is asked for in the Standard. I found too many large, heavy dogs that must have weighed 10 -12 kgs. I would not like to carry these around for too long and they could not be described as Toy Spaniels.

Tails….A big % had tails that were curled over the back like a Spitz. If I liked the rest of the dog, I overlooked this but it is lovely to see a dog with a rudder like tail that comes straight off the back and swishes when the dog is in motion. Not enough good croups, decent tail sets or correct tail carriage.

Heads….Quite an assortment. Heavy heads with deeps stops, narrow heads with no filling below eyes, Short noses. Long noses. Gentleness and softness is the key but without being overdone or underdone.

On the plus side

Mouths…. A young dog with a less than perfect scissor bite providing it doesn’t not alter the expression or looks undershot from the outside, doesn't overly concern me. A level bite or slightly undershot mouth can come right with maturity. But if the bite is way out then it should be best placed as a pet. Fortunately I had no problem with the majority of mouths on show.

Coats…..there were plenty of lovely, straight silky coats that gleamed with wellbeing. Good coats are inherited but to keep them looking at their best you have to care for and condition them. I liked what I saw.

Eyes….it was difficult to assess eyes in the strong sunlight but my impression was that the entry held many good eyes of the right size, shape and colour.

Temperament…..lovely, friendly outgoing dogs were the rule and I met only a few who looked as if they wished they were elsewhere. This has a knock on effect that shows in their dull expression, unhappy movement and sad personalities. Shows should be fun for your dog, otherwise they look flat and dejected, rather like Champagne with no bubbles. Most had typical, happy characters.

I was very happy with my final line up who looked so right standing together.936062_657248514292568_1847116491_n

I think most enjoyed the day and many were talking about returning next year. The heavens opened after we had left the showground and heavy rain and hailstones fell on our car as we headed back to the hotel. So we were fortunate that it had stayed off until after judging. After a short break to let us change and get freshened up we set off into Tallinn where we ate out at Olde Hansa, a medieval restaurant with loads of atmosphere. Several Committee members joined us and a pleasant evening was spent sampling unique Middle Ages type food and drink. Great fun.

DSC_4955

Sunday saw a Group 1X show at the same venue.DSC_4887
Simone and I swapped over and this time I did Bitches as well as Babies and Puppies and she judged the Males, Brace and Progeny classes and Best of Breed. Carole, Claudia and Zofia split the other breeds and Zofia was given the honour of judging BEST IN SHOW from all the Group 1X (COMPANION DOGS)

There were fewer Cavaliers than the day before with 27 adult males, 34 adult bitches and 6 babies and 2 puppies (5 absentees) and I awarded 6 Very Promising, 2 Promising, 23 Excellent, 10 Very Good, 1 Good

From what I saw on the day and the day before, I felt the majority of bitches were stronger and of a higher quality than the dogs. Size was better, heads were more acceptable and more correct tails. My Champion bitch class was super and a joy to see. From the unbeaten bitches I chose fro BEST BITCH

whilst Simone chose for Best Dog and BEST of BREED…. BRAITLAIT OF MOSKOU SUPREME who came all the way from Russia....over 1,000 kilometres by car

That night we had dinner in the hotel DSC_4965
with some exhibitors and committee and it was nice to relax after two enjoyable, but tiring, days.  Lots of different languages around the table.  English, German, Estonian and Russian. We all managed to make ourselves understood. Cavaliers are a universal bond.

It was a wonderful weekend and the Club committee did a great job and worked hard to make the show the success it was. The Estonian Cavalier owners I met were friendly and welcoming and very keen for feedback on their dogs. Some other sights from the show weekend..

The Humberside Cavalier Club held a Companion Dog show on 28th April at Great Hale, near Sleaford in Lincolnshire. Judge was Sue Paterson (Phrenchy). This was in aid of Humberside CKCS Club Health Fund which enables the club to offer FREE Heart Testing to their members at their Championship Show.

Joanne Hall writes....It was a wonderful and brilliant show run by Pat & Brian Esson the show organizers who they do a brilliant job in raising money for charity.  The show started at 9am with the Pedigree classes first, after that was the Cavalier Parade 945686_10200856168664144_25971330_n
where all15 cavaliers walked round just like being at a show and then the judge looked at each dog.  She then chose the Best of Breed first which was my 'Dallas' (
Clockpelters The Viceroy) who was given these wonderful prizes, a Trophy, Rosette & Sash.  Linda Flynn, secretary of the Club was there meeting us all and giving us a Medal for taking part in the Parade. When the Parade had finished the handling classes started followed by Companion show classes like, Most handsome dog, waggiest tail, best mover, appealing eyes etc.  These classes are mixed with dogs/bitches of different ages and breeds.

WHAT KIRSTIE DID DOWN UNDER
"My husband David and I have recently returned from a trip of a lifetime in New Zealand and Australia.  I was lucky enough to be invited to judge two Cavalier Club Championship shows at the end of April/May. We combined the trip with a holiday and we spent the majority of our time in the stunning South Island travelling about and taking in some amazing sights.  I even managed to fit in some training for the up and coming 10k Run in Edinburgh (and didn't she do well!)

The first Appointment on the 27th April was the Canterbury Cavalier Championship Show which was held at the McLeans Island Kennel Centre in Christchurch. Cg
My main winners were Best Dog and Best in Show was 6 yr old Grand Ch Nidra Fortune Chest with PrestonvilleBest Bitch and Reserve Best in Show was Prestonville Whispering with Milford.  Reserve Best Dog was  Ch Cavtrivar Mystery Eko and Reserve Best Bitch was  Travilla Over the Top at Greygables.

The show had a lovely atmosphere and the hard working ladies on the Committee put on a fantastic spread at lunch time.

DNA TESTING SCHEME
ADN_animation
Now that DNA testing for
Curly Coat/Dry Eye and Episodic Falling Syndrome has become an official KC scheme, the Animal Health Trust have received requests to release results for individual dogs so that they will appear on the KC online Health Test Results Finder, be included on KC registration documents, and be recorded in the Breed Records Supplement. Owners wishing test results from the research to be released to the KC are required to contact the AHT directly to provide consent. Reporting of these results should be entirely voluntary. Requests can be made by emailing Lou Hayward at lou.hayward@aht.org.uk and these will be processed as quickly as possible if the subject line reads "Cavalier DNA test results" and the body of the email contains the KC registered name of the dogor dogs involved and a statement to the effect that the owner gives their permission for DNA test results to be released to the KC. Lou can also be reached by post at Lou Hayward (CPM), Animal Health Trust, Lanwades Park, Kentford, Newmarket CB8 7UU. Telephone requests will not be accepted for security reasons. If the ownership of a Cavalier has changed since the study was completed in April 2012, the new owner will be asked to send a copy of the dog's current KC registration certificate by email or post.
Once requests have been received, batches of results will be forwarded to the KC regularly where they will be uploaded to the Health Test Results Finder as quickly as possible. Owners should expect the total processing time to take a fortnight, although it may be less than this.

EXCITING HEALTH DEVELOPMENTS GIVE CAVALIER BREEDERS NEW HOPE

CkcsbdgSheena Maclaine, Chairman of the Cavalier KCS Club writes:

"Cavalier Club Members attending 2 presentations prior to their AGM on Sunday 26th May were treated to more than just a glimmer of hope by the speakers.

Arnold Jacques, President of the Belgian Toy and Cavalier Club, Member of the Scientific Committee of the Belgian Kennel Club and President of "Cavaliers for Life" gave a presentation on"Sustainable dog breeding and update on the project Cavaliers for Life".

Instead of hasty short term measures, Arnold spoke of the need for a sustainable solution as the only way we can ensure the future of the breed.  A sustainable breeding policy should be sought in the world of “quantitative genetics” to establish the heritability of certain traits.  Scientists can make predictions about siblings based on the characteristics of parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters & so on. It was quite clear that our European “experts” are much further ahead than the UK with their “Estimated Breeding Value” programme.  So impressive is the work done that they have received Flemish government support with a grant to develop a “Mate Select type programme” based on Estimated Breeding Values, calculated from all types of health screenings, including DNA tests, eye tests, MRI scans, cardiologist reports etc. to offer a reduction of the inbreeding coefficient.

In the UK the Animal Health Trust has received funding from the Kennel Club to assist in developing their EBV programme however currently it is only able to look at data provided from the KC/BVA schemes with regard to CM/SM, Hearts and DE/CC and EF. Arnold’s message was quite clear: “To build a sustainable breeding program, we needed a close collaboration between the breeders, the breeding clubs and the scientists. Measures imposed from the top simply did not work.  Instead breeding policies must be developed in close collaboration, between the various parties. Otherwise each initiative, however good it may be, was doomed to fail.”

Bill Lambert, the Kennel Club’s Health & Breeder’s Services Manager, attending the presentation, heard the request from Arnold, to be able to access the Kennel Club’s pedigree database for Cavaliers.  Currently Europe already has pedigrees for 120,000 Cavaliers.  The Cavalier Club has formerly requested this support from the Kennel Club.  We have to work in collaboration with Europe and encourage the experts to work together. The emphasis of Arnold’s presentation was the need to maintain genetic diversity.  This is not new, however it highlighted that (particularly in Europe) parti-colours and wholecolours are treated in breeding programmes almost as 2 separate breeds.By integrating the colours the gene pool instantly widens. However, in order to encourage breeders to “take the risk” of producing wholecolours with white the breed standard would need a very slight adjustment.  In the UK this breeding has been done occasionally to improve the quality and type and stock “mis-marked” with white is kept to breed on the next generation.  In Europe this is not possible.  The Cavalier is an English breed and therefore under FCI Rules the English Breed Standard has to be applied strictly.  Therefore all breeding stock is assessed prior to any breeding and a wholecolour with white would not be permitted to be bred from.

Following this presentation the Cavalier Club has given its support by proposing to all regional Clubs that we make the suggested changes to the Breed Standard:

Black & Tan: Raven black with tan markings above the eyes, on cheeks, inside ears, on chest and legs and underside of tail.  Tan should be bright.   Ruby: Wholecoloured, rich red.  Blenheim: Rich chestnut markings on pearly white ground.  Markings evenly divided on head, leaving room between ears for much valued lozenge mark or spot (a unique characteristic of the breed).  Tricolour: Black and White, well spaced with tan markings over eyes, cheeks, inside ears, inside legs and underside of tail.

References to “white undesirable” having been removed from the wholecolours and “well broken up ” from the particolours.

To quote Bill Lambert:  "If the majority of Cavalier Clubs give their support to the revision of the Standard the Kennel Club would be highly likely to make the changes."

How much more attractive than outcrossing!

On to the second presentation -

Dr Paul Mandigers, DVM, PhD, Dip RNVA (Internal Medicine), European Veterinary Specialist Neurology EBVS Dept of Clinical Sciences of Companion Animals, Section Internal Medicine – Neurology Utrecht University, gave a presentation on "Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia in Toy dogs, latest developments and projects"

Despite English not being his native tongue Paul engaged with the audience immediately.  His presentation gave out some very strong messages.  The impact of the “biased” television programme, Pedigree Dogs Exposed, was panic.  Panic at all levels from government to The Kennel Club, to individual breeders and Clubs.  This had resulted in some poor decisions being hastily made. He had looked at 866 scans between 2002 & 2012 including clinical cases and then re-evaluated the same scans using the KC/BVA CM/SM scheme protocol for the European scheme. He made it quite clear, backed by data from looking at more than one breed, that CM and SM are two separate conditions.  Virtually all Cavaliers have CM.  Looking at SM specifically he firmly believed that all breeding stock should currently be scanned.  However, “babies should not be thrown out with bath water”.  In fact when looking to do any breeding “sick” dogs should be considered.

By sick he did not mean “unfit” to be bred from.  All aspects of health should be considered.  You would never choose to breed from a dog with symptoms of SM nor a young dog with a heart murmur.  However you may need to breed from a dog with not such a good scan that comes from a good heart line, i.e. where parents/grand-parents are over the age of 5 with clear hearts. He quite clearly explained that he had looked at many scans and those where the syrinx was round in shape with cerebrospinal fluid able to surround the syrinx he had not known there to be signs of pain or other symptoms.  Where the syrinx was irregular in shape and the cerebrospinal fluid was unable to surround the syrinx the dog would experience pain and show symptoms of SM.

It was his considered opinion that as the number of those Cavaliers affected by Syringomyelia was only a small percentage with careful breeding the condition could be eradicated! Paul showed evidence that the Cavalier’s skull shape was not relevant to CM/SM. He also talked of our primary objective being to “Define our Phenotype correctly” and our secondary objective to not having to rely on a MRI scan for our breeding decisions.  But…for now we need to combine MRI scans with CT to get the primary objective. Paul re-iterated that we all needed to work together – scientists & breeders.  He was also adamant that publication of results was dangerous and should be avoided – it encourages “naming and shaming” which is not healthy.  It is very important that the right dog for the right bitch is selected – based on all its health factors and not just one– great to hear this from one of the world’s leading experts – a message that humble Cavalier breeders had failed to get across at meetings with the KC and BVA experts in Scheme Planning meetings.

Club Members have their say

Elaine Waddington (former Health Representative Northern CKCS Club) Arnold Jacques’ talk seemed so full of common sense and confirmed my own beliefs with regard to over use of the same stud dogs narrowing the gene pool and that publishing health results was having a detrimental effect as everybody wanted to use the stud dogs with the best health test results thereby exacerbating the problem. Dr Mandigers’ talk on CM/SM was enlightening with some new ideas being delivered.  The sharing of research between countries will help to ensure a more balanced view and can only be helpful.  I left the meeting feeling more positive and there was hope that our beautiful breed could be saved.

David Crossley (Health Representative Humberside Cavalier KCS Club) Two good presentations with strong, positive messages.  Presence of Kennel Club representative useful if it results in backing to get Kennel Club pedigree database shared. Good to hear European scientific views based on fact and not personal theories.  Very pleased that common sense appears to exist in Europe, if not in the BVA!

Rob Dix(Kennel Club’s Breed Liaison & Health Liaison Representative for Cavaliers) Quality presentations despite English not being their first language.  We clearly need EBVs that include as many health conditions as possible and then lots of good advice on how to use them.  I feel that the breed Clubs should be encouraging the use of Coefficient Breeding to reduce the scores. Dr Mandigers’ presentation was so well received because he told us that some of the other “leading expert’s” theories may well be wrong and that there was a considerable amount of tunnel vision.  It felt that, at last, there was some challenge to existing theories backed with sound science. I hope that we will see an even stronger turnout of members, breeders and other interested parties at the follow up presentation next March.

Judy Wright (Honorary Life Member, Cavalier KCS Club) I think everyone was expecting much the same as we’ve heard before; but we were all in for a surprise!  Arnold Jacques painted a much rosier picture about the breed than we have been used to.  He stressed the need to use EBV when breeding. Backed up with sound evidence and when he’d finished speaking the room was buzzing, instead of the usual depressing facts and figures of recent years, we were left full of hope for the future. The talk by Dr Mandigers was very clear and concise.  He told us about the work going on at Utrecht University using Cavaliers from Germany, France, Belgium, Holland and South Africa, showing us slides of MRI scans, charts and figures to support the findings.  Supported by the Flemish government and the Belgian Kennel Club, willing to listen & act upon the results that Dr Mandigers and his colleagues find. Luckily, there was a KC representative at this meeting and he assured us that the Kennel Club would listen and look at all the research and see if they could work with the Belgian initiative. This was what the Meeting wanted and needed to hear. Both speakers told us that our problems are compounded because we live on an Island. We were told to look outwards; look at what is going on elsewhere, and not to be too blinkered or despondent. I’m sure the texts of the presentations will become available in due course. They should be required reading for every breeder and everyone with an interest in the breed. They were wonderful presentations and everyone was smiling at the end.

Stop Press - the full content of both these presentations is now available on the Club’s website  www.thecavalierclub.co.uk  The Cavalier Club is delighted that both speakers have accepted their invitation to return to speak again with more time for questions and answers – put Sunday 2nd March 2014 in your calendars now (the day after the Club’s Championship Show, in the KC Building at Stoneleigh – more details to follow).

Cavalier Clubs and breeders have received much criticism of their approach to health yet have never stopped providing data for research – eyes, hearts, CM, SM, DE/CC and EF.  We continue to work with the experts.

Working with leading cardiologists Simon Swift & Anne French, the Cavalier Club is organising Doppler Heart Testing clinics around the country.  The Club contributed £5,000 towards the cost of this machine 2 years ago.  The heart experts are looking specifically at Cavaliers over 8 with and without murmurs, with and without medication.  Only 10-12 dogs can be seen at any one session and when 100 have been seen the data will be analysed, followed by another 100.  If more data is required a further 200 will be looked at.

The Club has committed £15,000 over 3 years to supporting Professor Brendan Corcoran and the work of his PhD student, Mr Chi-Chien (Fox) Liu at the Royal Dick and they are currently in the second year of their study looking at Pathology of MMVD in Cavaliers. We are grateful to the financial contribution from three of our regional Clubs, the Northern Ireland, Scottish & Southern Cavalier. Please don’t let it be said that as custodians of the Cavalier, we don’t care about their health.  The majority clearly do!  With so much that is positive let’s not dwell on the minority."

Scenic surroundings, warm friendly locals, easy ring access and parking, good food, normally good weather  Sun
....it ticks so many boxes...and we have our very own Marie McFarlane and Kirstie McMurray on the Committee and that adds to the welcome Border Union offers. This year Ellie Mordecai (Millhill) was judging and here are some photos of the occasion.

BEXLEY'S FIRE GOES OUT

Bexley

Katie Kennedy and Charlie Weidig write from New York."We are saddened to announce the passing of CKCSC/AKC CH Chadwick September Song at BlackFire,"Bexley," at the age of 15-1/2 years. In the long list of condolences we received, one thought stands out:  'She owned the ring, and she owned our hearts.'

BexleyGaiting

Bexley came from our very first litter, and we always said that we didn't pick her to keep - she picked us.  She was always the first puppy in the litter to come over to us when we approached the pen; how could we resist? Over the course of her lifetime, she compiled an impressive record of CKCSC class wins and finished her AKC Championship. But perhaps her greatest accomplishment in the ring came in 2010 when she was awarded Best in Show by Judge Lydia Coleman-Hutchinson, just 3 weeks before her 13th birthday. She followed that a few months later by being awarded her second major by Judge Barb Curley, thereby finishing her CKCSC-USA Championship. She is believed to be the oldest Cavalier in the long history of the club to finish a Championship.

Bexley always provided us with plenty of laughs. She was something of a pack rat, going around and collecting dog toys, slippers, leashes, and anything else we would leave lying around.  She never chewed or destroyed them - she just enjoyed collecting them. At one dog show, she collected all of the leashes in the hotel room and brought them up onto the bed. The funny part is that her mother, Widget, was still attached to one of them! Bexley lived a long and healthy life, staying free of any heart murmur until she was 12 years old. She passed away at home in Katie's arms.

Our condolences on the passing of this bright star

AGILITY RECORD MAKER

Turo130608_3

Just recently Virpi Laaksonen and her black/tan boy Turo won the final CAC required to be a FinFinnish Agility Champion and we believe Turo is the first Cavalier to be both a Show Champion and an Agility Champion in Finland - possibly the World? His string of titles..... Finnish, Swedish, Estonian and Lithuanian Champion and Finnish Agility Champion.
Jane Naylor who bred Turo (aka Bacchante du Nid du Faisan) writes "It takes some dedication to train a dog for agility, and Virpi has worked so well with Turo, in both show and agility rings. He is litter brother to my Bijou and they are heading for their seventh birthday." Go Turo  !

Many may have heard of the Wimbledon winning, tennis star Ivan Lendl (he coaches Scot Andy Murray) from the Czech Republic but what you may not know he is the owner of a large collection of art nouveau posters by Alphonse Mucha, the famous Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative artist. This collection was displayed in exhibition and Libor Kral, in his own special way, has recreated the posters to incorporate our breed.

IT'S BABE'S BIRTHDAY

IMG_0260_resized (2)

Estelle Dodds (Itsadodal Cavaliers) in Inverkeithing in Scotland just helped CHIFFINCH DOUBLE WHOOPIE celebrate her 15th Birthday. Estelle writes "I do feel very privileged to have 'Babe' in my life for the last 8 1/2 years. She came to live with me when her breeder Mollie (Thurston) was hospitalised and all her dogs had to be rehomed. She had previously asked me to look after 'Babe' if anything happened to her, so down to Inverkeithing she came. I became aware quite soon after she arrived that she is almost completely deaf. However she misses very little as she is always on the lookout, so long as she is awake! She does sleep quite a lot these days but still loves her food, going for short walks and generally lording it over the other dogs." Looking good Babe!

I was saddened to hear that Alan Shidler has passed away. Alan had been ill for quite a while, but seriously ill for just a few months. Alan and Sue have been good friends of ours for many years and we enjoyed spending time with them and their SevenWoods Cavaliers when we visited them in  Illinois. Alan was justifiably proud of Sue and their Cavaliers' success. On behalf of the Cavalier community Sue, we send condolences.

So
It was also with deep regret that The CKCSC of New South WalesNswannounced the death of their much loved Partron, Shirlee Leach (Garaig Cavaliers). Our sympthy to Shirlee's family and friends.

WE ALL START SOMEHWERE

001  003002

Just last week Gordon ventured North over the Border and took a trip to the Scottish Highlands including Braemar where our dog showing all began, and carved a path for us, that has wound it's way through Cavaliers for over 40 years.   This was our very first prize card won at the North of Scotland Toy Dog show in 1974. The show was held in Braemar and the judge was Scottish breeder Helen Maclean (Helensly). How proud we were with our "Honey" Pamojill Tabwentai bred by Moira and Jill Stewart of Portoblello, Edinburgh.'Honey' began what was to be our 'way of life' in the world of dog showing. She was sired by Ch Mr Softie of Pantisa, a tricolour dog owned by George and Morag Donaldson. Royal Deeside is wonderful countryside and you can understand why it is a favourite with our Royal Family who has their Summer residence there, Balmoral Castle.

WHO WAS SINBAD?

 Skidmore_Cavalier_Photo_IMG_4046_web

Sheryl Skidmore lives in New Hampshire and send us this framed photo."This is a photo I found a few years ago, and I’m wondering if there’s any chance this boy played a part in the early history of the Cavalier, of if he was just a cherished pet. The owners went to some expense at the time tohave a formal portrait taken by a professional photographer and then framed in an inlaid frame! The photograph is 4” x 5 ½” silver print.  The reverse of the photo is marked "Sinbad, 1913, 4 years old".   The photo itself also has the stamp of “G. Maychell photographer, West Witton” on the reverse.  (My research found a George Maychell in West Witton, Yorkshire, who was a late Victorian and Edwardian photographer.) Overall size: 8 ½” x 10 ½”. The frame is original; a fine-grained honey colored wood (like maple) with banded inlay edge, and having its original mat and wavy glass.Tucked inside the backboard was a late 20thcentury business card: Olive Mills Gallery,  Arts and Crafts Supply Company. Artist’s Supplies, Lessons, Gifts and Antiques Rt. 231, 5 miles N. of Madison, Banco, Virginia 22711. Phyllis E. Rockwell    Tel. (703) 923-4328

On the reverse of the business card:“Purchased in Helmsley, Yorkshire, England, town market day.”

WrFollowing on from the reasonable success of last year’s inaugural Cavalier of the Year and Puppy of the Year event, the Cavalier KC Spaniel Club have strived to make this year’s competition on Sunday September 8th 2013 even better.

They have moved to a beautiful new venue in the Warwickshire countryside which is easily accessible from the main motorway network – Wroxall Abbey Estate was the country seat of Sir Christopher Wren, and boasts the lovely ‘Wrens Cathedral’ in its grounds. Full details can be viewed by using this link www.thecavalierclub.co.uk

UkBlackpool All Breeds Championship show was a washout, weatherwise, in 2012 so the Committee must have been relieved to see decent weather forecast for this year's show  days 21st-23rd June. Judging in the Cavalier rings was Brian Rix (Ricksbury) and Rob Sansom (Byersmoor) and the Toy Breeds day was blessed with the sun splitting the sky. Some photos for you to enjoy. Blackpool is a seaside Lancashire town  and is popular with holiday makers. Amongst its quaint attractions it offers a Tower, Pier, beach,  Amusement Park, donkey rides, fish-and-chip shops, fortune-tellers, trams, zoo, theatres and shows, and Blackpool Rock. It is our "Venice of the North", and quite unique.

RUFF DAY AT WORK?

Do pets make a difference in the workplace?

Pet lovers always say how beneficial it is to bring their dogs to work and researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University believe they may be right. They are exploring the people-pet connection in the workplace. A study published last year found that bringing a pet to work is beneficial to the employee and the employer. “Our study seems to support the idea that a dog presence in the workplace may reduce stress, increase job satisfaction and communication and really help with the issue of job burnout,” said Prof. Randolph Barker, the principal investigator for this study.

Greta Springett  feels lucky to work for a company that lets her bring her Cavalier Phoebe to the office whenever she works. “It gives me peace of mind. When Phoebe’s here with me, I know she’s well taken care of and she has a calming effect on everyone. It’s really a nice perk.“They bring smiles to employee’s faces,” said co-owner Lance Hollander. “It makes the work environment easier for people trying to handle a busy life.”

Chatterboxhas been missing for a couple of weeks as I have been away in Sweden judging and decided to spend a few days afterwards visiting friends in the Gothenburg area. Normal service has now been resumed....this edition is concentrating purely on the show scene around the UK in the last few weeks. The next edition will return to having our usual flavour with news from both home and abroad, photos, scraps from the past and anything that I feel you would like to read about. Please continue to send me items of news. ..trivia,trifling, serious, sombre. If it is Cavalier related I will take it!

AROUND THE UKDOG SHOWS....PART 1
Cavalier day at East of England All Breeds British_tea2Championship show at Peterborough was held this year on Saturday 6th July, the day before the Combined Cavalier show hosted this year by Eastern Counties CKCS Society. So several Cavalier exhibitors took the opportunity to make a weekend of it and took in both shows. Brian Rix (Ricksbury) and Ray Waddington (Spindlepoint) did the honours at Peterborough. This was Ray's first appointment at CC level and he certainly looked as if he was enjoying himself. The weather couldn't have been better, especially for the site caravanners. With judging completed and plenty to celebrate cold drinks and icecream were the order of the day. Nice to see many overseas familiar faces making it quite international....Annukka and Louri from Finland, Jeanie still here from Sydney, Margaret Chalmers and Lyndey Morris also from Australia, Libor and Oldrich from Czech Republic and Klaus and Marlen from Germany. Her are some fun in the sun pictures.....

EAST FEAST OF CAVALIERS....

EasternThe Joint Cavalier Clubs' Joint show was hosted this year by the Eastern CKCS Society, and after the stupendous Northern Club extravaganza in 2012 which was hailed as a great success, I think the Eastern can definitely give themselves a well deserved pat on the back that their show was also a triumph. Every area had been considered for the convenience and the enjoyment of the entrants.  It was a blistering hot weekend and I think exhibitors were concerned that the heat would be unbearable for both dogs and humans. We need not have worried as the Cresset Centre was an ideal venue for the event and the excellent air conditioning was a godsend. Situated in the middle of Peterborough it was easy to get to from the A1 and being on a Sunday, no traffic problems. Parking was just outside the hall. Food available all day and a Pub around the corner for anyone that wanted to venture outside for lunch. Raffle, photographer, prize draw, Junior and Adult handling classes all added to the appeal. There was a free catalogue and even a goodie bag for every exhibitor. 245 Cavaliers entered for Lorraine Hughes (Loranka) and Rob Dix (Beewye) to go over. The weekend proved to be memorable in other ways too. Andy Murray won Wimbledon. The Pascavale team made up a new Champion bred by Kevin and Debra Cline and the Charlie, Ch Maibee Theo won a prestigious Best in Show at Peterborough All Breeds show.

There was a  great atmosphere at the show which was helped no doubt by the sampling of Gill Bakers' legendary cakes and scones and Klaus Vorderstrasse brought bottles of Cava from Germany and I supplied soft drinks and during the lunch break we had an impromptu party. We went out under the trees and although we had no occasion in mind, it was enjoyable just sharing the time with friends who helped us devour the refreshments. It was also a day where we were able to spend quality time with friends who after having some health issues, were looking well and enjoying being back. All in all a great weekend of shows and the better weather lifted the mood.  Some souvenir pics from the show.

Lorraine Gillhespy (Lorphil) went to Switzerland recently to judge at the Cavalier and King Charles Spaniel Club of Switzerland. Lorraine writes "The venue was a racecourse in Aarau, about an hour's drive from Zurich and the hospitality from the club officials was superb. From an entry of 40 Cavaliers and 13 Charlies, I ended up with a 4 year old ruby bitch,  Ch VDH & CCD Ch. Black Value Cavaliers Crazy Winner GirlforCavalier BOB and BIS.Such a show girl, excellent construction, glorious coat and colour and handled so well. She had a Turretbank sire and Woodville dam. My BOB Charlie was another ruby, although less mature than the Cavalier at only 20 months, but again a very special dog, and again superb construction, wonderful coat colour and presentation. Bred in Finland by Marja Kurittu, the dog was Marjaniemen Ivory's Trophy sired by Ch. Ivory's Rubinowy Scarb out of a Ch. Flivverway the Emmy, a B/T bitch that won the CC at CRUFTS this year.

SERVICE WITH A SMILE

51d4f9dc779d7.preview-620

U.S. Army veteran, Joane Dandurand, had some tough experiences in the military and ended up terminating her enlistment early. When she got home, she suffered from post traumatic stress disorder but was able to train 'Hunter', her Cavalier, to be her service dog. 'Hunter' was a lifesaver, said Joane, who also suffers from multiple sclerosis. The little dog would alert her when she got anxious from PTSD by jumping into her lap to distract her or waking her up when she had nightmares. But as the multiple sclerosis got worse, she needed more help than Hunter could provide. If she fell, Hunter just wasn’t big enough to allow Joane to use her as a brace to get up. She needed a bigger helper.

Joane went to K9s for Warriors Organisation in Florida for three weeks in May to meet Lilly, a 3-year-old golden retriever, and receive training on her and bring her home. “The dogs already come trained but the training is to teach people how to work with a service dog.” The dogs are mostly shelter dogs or surrenders, which are then evaluated and put to work for veterans. If she feels nervous around someone, Joane can tell Lilly to “post” and the retriever will move between her and the other person. Lilly will also help her get up if she falls or has troubles from the multiple sclerosis. “My goal is to be a park ranger and then I can work by myself in my truck and have my dogs.” “Things are starting to look up,” she said. “My vet bill got a bit bigger and I have to vacuum more, but it’s totally worth it.”

 CUTS A DASH

!cid_image002_png@01CE7251

This 19th needlepoint pole screen, inspired by the image of 'Dash', is from the 1838 painting by Sir Edwin Landseer titled "Hector, Nero and Dash with the parrot, Lory", commissioned by Queen Victoria and today can be seen in the Royal Collection. The panel is 16 x 22  inches and the walnut stand measure 49 inches high. At the Hamshere Gallery  http://www.hamsheregallery.com/

 SPOTS AND STRIPES

Toby at the milkbar
Dorothy Berry (Kurranulla Cavaliers and Dalmatians) from South Africa sends us this charming story about Toby, the tricolour Cavalier.  "When he arrived at eight weeks I had a litter of Dalmatian puppies who became his new playmates and what they did, Toby did. Including dinner time! You may notice the back end of Harriet, my sweet, patient Dalmatian. She was dragged over the fence and savaged by a pitbull cross. A wonderful young vet did everything she could to save my girl’s life. At the time she was only 22 months old and one CC short of becoming a Champion. Harriet was in hospital for three and a half weeks and was operated on every day, removing dead and dying flesh, and finally having her tail removed due to the top three vertebrae being crushed.  So despite the trauma and the repeated anaesthetics, Harriet survived to give me three good litters and treat Toby the tricolour Cavalier as one of her own."

CAVALIER LOVERS GET HITCHED

The ceremony was attended by the couple's family and friends who wished the couple all the best for the future and looked forward to the patter of lots of 'little Champion paws'.

THE TALE OF TRICIA AND TYLER

JS23175327-5694416JS23175323-5694415

Tricia Webb from Middlesborough credits her beloved Cavaliers with motivating her to recover from the grip of anorexia and saving her life. So when she was told her beloved eight year old 'Tyler' had lymphoma and just four weeks to live, she vowed to do whatever she could to keep him happy and comfortable.

Eight months on, 'Tyler' is still here, tail still wagging with happiness, thanks to the tender loving care of his 34-year-old 'mum' Tricia. TLC means taking him out in one of her old wheelchairs.

“My dogs are my life and that’s what got me better. That’s why I would do anything for them,” she said. "It was heartbreaking to leave 'Tyler' behind when he could no longer enjoy the same long walks as her other three dogs, 'Bodie', 'Max' and 'Sam'. Tricia, who lives with her mum and dad, has suffered from anorexia since she was 16. She describes having been “in and out of hospital” and the toll the illness has taken on her body, causing brittle bone disease osteoporosis. But in the past nine years, whenever she has been at a low ebb, it is her dogs that have always seen her bounce back. She said: “I’ve had them since they were pups. They are like my kids. I sit and talk to them about any problems I have. Obviously they can’t tell anyone! I love them so much, when I was in hospital, they would ask me ‘what’s your goal or reason to get better?’ I would always say, my dogs are my goal.” “My mum and dad ask “what do we say to spur you on if we lose Tyler?” “I tell them, remind me I’ve got another three dogs there that need me as well."

LAND AHOY

 ImgID648459

Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguard, Ian Chattun, had a busy Sunday afternoon recently at Aberporth, on the west coast of Wales, when he went out to assist a broken down personal craft only to return to shore with a family pet. Ian paddled out on the rescue board to investigate and found that a local boat owner was already helping but as the lifeguard returned to shore, one of his RNLI colleagues on the beach spotted a Cavalier paddling out to sea. The family pet was following his owner, who was kayaking out to sea, unaware that his pet was on his tail. Ian quickly turned around and picked up the dog who was by now struggling to keep his head above water. The Cavalier was safely returned to shore, on the front of the rescue boardm and was soon reunited with his family.

HENNIE TAKES HER LEAVE

Hennie

from Linda Flynn (Linjato)"I first met Hennie Seeder de Vries in 1984 at a Hypermarket in Belgium,Be having been introduced by Wendy Hilberts-Goodman. Hennie said she would bring a Cavalier along with her so I could recognize her and her husband Gerrard. Little did we know that day the friendship we would form and that it would last almost 30 years!  Hennie was a kind loving person whom I called my little Belgian Mum, and my son looked upon her as a grandmother. She was an amazing lady who in her younger days was a bookbinder, but what many people didn’t know about her was her passion for languages and music.  She taught herself to speak French, English, German and Russian! She was also a self-taught very accomplished pianist, which never came easy for her due to the deformities of her fingers on both hands.

After we returned home to the UK from living in Belgium, our friendship continued and she would come to the UK every year for two weeks holiday, and the highlight for her was always go to Club Show weekend and Crufts.  She was known by many and loved watching the Cavaliers and chatting to people. In those early days, including myself there were only a handful of breeders in Belgium. Hennie and her husband Gerrard were very successful in the show ring not only with the Cavaliers but also with their Irish and English Setters which they had before adding Cavaliers to their family, having bred and owned Mistry’s Gamble, the top Irish Setter for many years, and many other Champions in both Irish and English Setters.  Hennie was the first person to import Cavaliers from the UK to Belgium, her first was her precious Sanubray Super Sue who she had from Molly Coaker, she then bought a lovely Tricolour boy from Di Fry.  Later she also imported two girls from Rhonda Banks and the Choya Kennel.  On one of her visits she fell in love with Linjato Ace of Base’s litter brother Linjato Mr Moonlighter, so off he went to Holland and became a Multi Champion and features in many of the pedigrees of today’s successful breeders, and Hennie was so proud of the fact they he went onto live until he was 18 years of age becoming Belgium and Holland’s oldest Cavalier . She was also a co-founder of The Pejaytoyspa in Beligum which was a joint breed club for Cavaliers, King Charles, Japanese Chin & Pekingese and worked tirelessly for many years, encouraging new members to show their dogs at the Club Show.  Sadly two years ago Hennie suffered a severe stroke, and was no longer able to make her annual pilgrimage to the UK.  Last weekend was the annual show for Pejatoyspa which she was on her way to, but during the journey wasn’t feeling too well and had to return to the residential home, where she was admitted into hospital later that day, but was still asking who had won at the show.  Sadly Hennie passed away on the Monday evening.  A little lady with the kindest heart….. Hennie, I will miss you always."

Hennie was a welcome visitor at our UK shows and her lovely smile could warm the coldest of venues.

Thrilled to see and handle this edition of The Works of Landseer who painted the well known "The Cavalier's Pets"

 Il_570xN.361869490_btj5

DSC_5721

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, RA (7 March 1802 - 1 October 1873) was an English painter, well known for his paintings of animals-particularly horses, dogs and stags. The best known of Landseer's works, however, are sculptures: the lions in Trafalgar Square, London.

Landseer was something of a prodigy whose artistic talents were recognised early on; he studied under several artists, including his father John Landseer, an engraver, and Benjamin Robert Haydon, the well-known and controversial history painter who encouraged the young Landseer to perform dissections in order to fully understand animal musculature and skeletal structure.
.
Landseer's life was entwined with the Royal Academy. At the age of just 13, in 1815, he exhibited works there. He was elected an Associate at the age of 24, and an Academician five years later in 1831. He was knighted in 1850, and although elected President in 1866 he declined the invitation.
.
Landseer was a notable figure in 19th century British art, and his works can be found in Tate Britain, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Kenwood House and the Wallace Collection in London.
.
Landseer's popularity in Victorian Britain was considerable. He was widely regarded as one of the foremost animal painters of his time, and reproductions of his works were commonly found in middle-class homes. Yet his appeal crossed class boundaries, for Landseer was quite popular with the British aristocracy as well, including Queen Victoria, who commissioned numerous portraits of her family (and pets) from the artist. Landseer was particularly associated with Scotland and the Scottish Highlands, which provided the subjects (both human and animal) for many of his important paintings.
.
So popular and influential were Landseer's paintings of dogs in the service of humanity that the name Landseer came to be the official name for the variety of Newfoundland dog that, rather than being black or mostly black, features a mix of both black and white.
.
In his late 30s Landseer suffered what is now believed to be a substantial nervous breakdown, and for the rest of his life was troubled by recurring bouts of melancholy, hypochondria, and depression, often aggravated by alcohol and drug use. In the last few years of his life Landseer's mental stability was problematic, and at the request of his family he was declared insane in July 1872.
.
Landseer's death on 1 October 1873 was widely marked in England: shops and houses lowered their blinds, flags flew at half-staff, his bronze lions at the base of Nelson's column were hung with wreaths, and large crowds lined the streets to watch his funeral cortege pass. Landseer was buried in St Paul's Cathedral, London.

SHACKLETON'S CAPTAINShackletons_captain

Kathy Jones lives in the North Island of New Zealand and one of her Cavaliers, Ch Shadola Limelight, appears in this documentary/film which follows Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 disastrous expedition to the South Pole. It was partly filmed at the lovely old gothic timber house - called Highwic in Newmarket, Auckland.  'Lily', who was mentioned in the credits, is now in her 9th year and retired from the show ring - but still travels with Kathy when she shows her other two Katric Cavaliers.

"Downton Abbey Cavalier Pawty

The “pawty” was a fundraiser to cover the medical costs for five of the rescue dogs associated with the Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue. Many of the dogs come with urgent health needs.

Volunteer and foster “mother” Karla McKanna of Joliet hosted the party at her “estate,” opened her swimming “pond” to all two- and four-legged guests and encouraged everyone to bask in the atmosphere of 1900s aristocracy. "Cavaliers are associated with English royalty so it tied in with the theme. It’s very fulfilling to watch the cavaliers we have helped blossom into pampered, loving pups. Many of them came from mills"

"Lady McKanna,” as she was known that day — encouraged both humans and cavaliers to be dressed as lords, ladies or servants. For a suggested donation of $10, guests could mill about the lawn and enjoy assorted tea sandwiches, scones and lemon curd, fruit and cheese, tea and Sangria. With 62 people and 63 cavaliers present, the “Downton Abbey” benefit raised $700. Good job, GCCR

Linda Halbert has asked if I could mention her friends Anne & Ian Gibb Stuart (Tangledwood Cavaliers). At the end of June their son Campbell had a life changing accident which has caused terrible brain injury and as you can understand has devastated his family and friends plus a couple of weeks ago Anne was rushed into hospital for emergency abdominal surgery. She is recovering at home now but faces more tests and maybe another operation. Linda writes "My family and I would like them to know they are in our thoughts and prayers and if anyone else would like to send them a card, their address is Mr & Mrs Gibb StuartStrathglass. Sorn Road. Catrine. Mauchline KA5 6NA. Scotland"

On behalf of the Cavalier community we wish them all the best at this difficult time.

6a010535952948970b017eeac46354970d-320wiYear by year,Top Barn Farm in Worcestershire justs gets more popular with UK Cavalier lovers, breeders and exhibitors, plus their dogs, who make it their annual camping holiday. It has become a pilgrimage in April and August for so many, for a couple of weeks'  fun, relaxation and meeting up with fellow Cavalierites. Top Barn Farm is an Activity Centre Set in beautiful Worcestershire countryside, adjacent to the River Severn and only 6 miles from the lovely city of Worcester with its renowned Cathedral, river walks and cruises and farmers' market.  It is ideal for caravan, motorhome, and tent enthusiasts with on site toilet and shower facilities, electric hook ups and a marquee for hire to cater for the programme of events put on by Camp Commandants, Pam Craig, Sandra and David Moger and anyone else who is prepared to lend a hand.
The Cavalier revellers who make their way there, have a whale of a time,  despite what Mother Nature throws at them. This year many went straight after the Northern CKCS Club show on 4th August and set up camp. From there they were able to take in three shows, namley Paignton, Bournemouth and Welsh Kennel Club...all within the 2 weeks and all a reasonable driving distance of the camp. Apart from going off to the dog shows there is always something else to do...and if you choose you could join in the organised attractions....during the day, young and old played Boules, Kubb, tackled the Agility course, entered the Fun Match judged by Mia Kendall. Bingo, Beetle Drive, Mexican Train, Abba Sing-a-long, Movie night, Karaoke, were some of the laid on entertainment in the evening and the sharing of food and liquid refreshments were a common sight. Shopping, eating out and sightseeing were also popular as Worcestershire has so much to offer.   Some memories of a glorious fortnight.

The Cavalier KCS Club Open show  took place on the camp site on Saturday 17th with 027judge Andy Shone (Cobalatino) drawing an impressive entry of 171 Cavaliers. Andy has been absent from the ringside of late, so he came to the show with a fresh eye and his polite command of the ring and decisive choices were impressive. Every dog was gone over methodically and gently and given a good look. A very pleasant show with a great atmosphere and good sportsmanship.

The refreshments started with bacon rolls on arrival and then a BBQ lunch and mid afternoon Cream Tea with scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream. Home made cakes, tea and coffee were available all day, so no one starved! The heart testing and an eye clinic were busy throughout the day and the weather was kind enough to allow judging to be conducted without interruption. Here are some pictures from the day.

The following day was one to relax and reflect on the past 2 weeks. The general concensus was that it had been one of the best vacations held at Top Barn and no one wanted it to end.

see you next year....

Monday was packing up time and it was sad to see everyone go their various ways. But they will all return next year as this is so popular and the dogs love their "holidays". This year Gordon took a couple of oldies, 'Lily' and 'Beryl' for the majority of the time and I took the two youngsters 'Sally' and 'Crystal' for the show weekend. They had a ball. The oldies were just happy to potter about.....sleep on the bed, get lots of attention, look out the motorhome windows and watch the general buzz of the campsite with  the campers doing what they doand there were some sights to be seen! A new addition this year was an vast circular play and excercise pen. The kids and puppies enjoyed this enormously. The weather was glorious. Some were there for 2 weeks, some 1 week and some came for the show weekend. The kids, about 15 of them, had lots to amuse them and their screams of delight endorsed that they think Top Barn is "cool"!

JOYCE BARTON

We were very saddened to hear on Friday 30th August that Joyce had passed away that morning. Joyce and her daughter Lorraine (Hughes) started the Loranka line of Cavaliers that has in more recent years been so successfully continued by Lorriane. I think the first time we saw the "Loranka" family was at Buxton Pavilion in the late 70s where the Northern CKCS Club held their championship shows.  Mum, Dad and the young Barton girls. Lorraine and Karen.  Our condolences to Albert and all the family at this sad time. Rest in Peace, Joyce.

PictureThe funeral will take place on Friday 6th September at 11.30 am at St Marys Church, Betws y coed and afterwards in the Church hall. All are welcome.

I am hoping that Lorraine will write something later about her Mum, a warm, kind lady who had a great love of our breed and her depth of knowledge and expertise is carried through today.

RULE BRITANNIA...

Elaine Waddington (Spindlepoint) judged Cavaliers at the Scottish Kennel ClubAugust Ch show in Edinburgh in August. During their mini break to Scotland, Ray and Elaine toured the Royal Yacht Royal-Yacht-Britannia
'Britannia' which is now moored in Leith Docks in Edinburgh. 'Britannia' was home to her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family for over 40 years, sailing over 1,000,000 miles around the world.

Elsa Marie Kitching (Ixion) was 60 recently and received a super Birthday cake from her family. It was modelled on her first Cavalier, 'Phoebe', who came from the late Margaret Kirkham (Moonstone).
As Elsa couldn't bear to cut into it, the cake, made out of Victoria sponge and fondant 4243811739_a877d14cb9_zicing, stayed intact until the icing cracked up, at which time it was fed to the water fowl on Sheerwater Lake at Longleat.

French breeder, Bernard Dunglas (De Vaudival) (bottom left of picture)

6a010535952948970b017ee97e791a970d-500wi
has passed away. Last time I saw Bernard was at Crufts 2013 (he came every year) when several of us got together and shared a glass of Champagne. So sad to think he is no longer with us. RIP, Bernard

Goodbye, Joyce

183588_190990180924408_3658402_n

Joyce Barton (mum of Lorraine Hughes) and founder of the Loranka Cavaliers died on Friday last week after being in poor health for some time. Joyce was extremely well liked and respected in Cavalier circles and when she stopped coming to shows we missed her. She will be proud of the success the Lorankas have achieved with Lorraine at the helm. Our thoughts are with her husband Albert (seen above with Joyce) and Lorraine and the rest of the family.

GENTLE JOHN

6a010535952948970b0133ed6ce238970bAnother well known figure who has gone in the last few days is John Lymer, Sylvia's husband. He is seen here on right talking to Ernie Bull at the Northern Ireland CKCSC Ch show in 2010 when he accompanied Sylvia on the trip and enjoyed celebrating their birthdays and Golden Wedding Anniversary.

6a010535952948970b013480a05a70970c

Never in the foreground at shows but he gave Sylvia lots of support with the Lymrey Cavaliers and I recall with fondness the soirees John and Sylvia hosted at their home in Coalville on numerous occasions when their hospitality to local and overseas Cavalier visitors was warm and welcoming. A giant of a man with gentle ways. Sylvia, on behalf of the Cavalier community know that you are in our prayers and wish you strength at this difficult and sad time.

 PANDORA'S BIRTHDAY BOX

Photo

Meet "Pandora" owned by Tricia Nicola in Australia. Her registered name is Irishmoor Patties Pride FDCH RN CD ADM JDX ADO(2) JDO SD SPD GD and she just celebrated her 14th birthday. Tricia writes "Pandora"  has always given 101% of everything we do together. She is a flyball champion, has her Masters Agility title and more recently obtained her Rally Novice and Obedience titles. However, more importantly, she is my best friend and I am so lucky that at the tender age of 14 years she is still heart clear although totally deaf. Here she is reclining in her new dog bed bought for her birthday.  Happy birthday, pretty Pandora

15 AND STILL GOING STRONG

013

Michelle Creek wishes a Happy 15th birthday to her first champion, Ch. Lakeisha Phantom Chance born in the early hours on the 4th September, 1998. Michelle writes "Asha was the result of my first forage into crossing parti-colour & whole-colours which I have continued through the generations. She has been a very easy dog to live with and was a great dog to have on the end of the lead in the show ring gaining her title in between having puppies. Her son was Ch. Lakeisha Xquisit Saphire, a b/t and her great grandchildren are the recently titled Ch. Lakeisha Sneak Peak, a blenheim and Lakeisha Mister Mysterious who is well on his way to his title, another blenheim. She is still matriarch of the house and doesn't let age stop her defending her food as one of the youngsters found out just the other day. She still bounces for food, her bark reminding me that it's dinner time or that the kids have left something tasty on the kitchen bench. Not as fast as she used to be, no longer running full pelt down the backyard but she can still keep up a good pace going around the backyard. A gentle tap on my leg will remind me that she is always there at my feet." Many Happy Returns, old girl!

CILLA SETS A NEW RECORD

DSC_5151

At SKC show under Elaine Waddington Ch Harana Cilla Black JW won her 7th CC. A feat in itself but this was a very special win. This made Cilla Black the top winning Black and Tan in the Breed's history. A record that has stood since 1949.

 1176132_10151724828171475_1540584582_a

 Baby Cilla

003

The previous holder of the record was Ch Amanda Loo of Ttiweh (seen above with Ch Daywell Roger) who won 6 CCs between 1947 and 1949 at LKA, Richmond, Met & Essex, Manchester Toy, Croydon and Blackpool Championship shows. Whilst some of these societies are no longer in existance, others have stood the test of time. The judges who awarded her the CCs were L Wilson, F Mitchell, J Beynon, D Murray, G Worfolk, B Rothwell-Fielding. The only name I am familiar with is Daphne Murray (Crustadele) who was the sister of Katie Eldred who owned Belinda of Saxham the Bitch CC winner in 1946 at the very first CKCSC Champ show.

...so well done Lucy and Ch Harana Cilla Black JW on breaking the record that stood for 64 years!!
