ImagesNI3I0VLDIt was very sad to hear the newsthat Alan Shailhad passed away on Tuesday 3rd May 2016, as we have been friends for almost 40 years and have very happy memories of good times spent at Alan and Elaine's home when they lived in Taplow. We showed alongside them in the ring when they campaigned their Rossbonny Cavaliers and shared the thrill of their success with Ch Amantra Naval Dream of Rossonny and Ch Triple Mint from Amantra at Rossbonny. Alan had not been in good health for some time but always managed to bear his illness with a smile. It was good to see them both at the Cavalier Club show in March and I know Alan enjoyed greeting so many his Cavalier friends. Our love to Elaine and their two sons, David and Kevin. I will always think of Alan with that mischievous twinkle in his eye. Never forgotten by those whose lives he touched. UntitledAlan’s funeral will be held on Monday 16th May at 4pm at Stafford Crematorium, Tixall Road, Stafford. ST18 0XZ. No flowers please. Afterwards at The Nest Pub, 4 St John Street, Cannock WS11 5HP.

Dogs aren’t just man’s best friend. They’re also good travel partners. That’s what Amtrak seems to think, anyway. The railroad says dogs and other small pets will now be allowed to accompany their owners on Amtrak Downeaster trains between Brunswick, Maine and Boston’s North Station. Dennis Estes, a rider from Boston, said the ability to bring his dog on board is a “game changer.“I no longer have to rent a car to visit family in southern Maine,” he said, "I simply call ahead, make a reservation, sign the pet waiver, and then sit back and enjoy the ride with Tobo, my Cavalier.” The railroad began a pet pilot program along the route in October 2015. Nearly 100 small dogs and cats rode the trains with their owners, Amtrak Downeaster said."

HOW TO CHILLAX

  12557303-dogdala-cover12557303-dogdala-back-cover
Gain clarity, focus, and peace colouring DogDalas - over 50 Dog mandalas &and mantras/affirmations included... Mandalas are a form of therapy used by thousands worldwide. People seeking to calm their thoughts and increase their productivity colour mandalas every day. Now, anyone with a love of dogs and a desire for clarity, have a source for those reflections in "DogDala." Unlock your creativity with more than fifty DogDala designs." The top 50 breeds are represented in this coloring book. Also included are over fifty mantras (also called affirmations) for meditation during the colouring process. Breeds included: Akita, Alaskan Malamute, American Foxhound, Australian Shepherd, Basset Hound, Beagle, Bloodhound, Border Collie, Boxer, Brittany, Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Cane Corso, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested, Chow-chow, Cocker Spaniel, Collie, Curly-Coated Retriever, Dachshund, Dalmatian, French Bulldog, German Shepherd, Great Dane, Irish Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Mastiff, Newfoundland, Papillon, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Pomeranian, Poodle, Pug, Rat Terrier, Rottweiler, Saint Bernard, Shih Tzu, Siberian Husky, Vizsla, Weimaraner, West Highland White Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier.

Choose your medium, choose the DogDala to color, and enjoy. Turn your thoughts inward. Each of the designs were created for dog people and pet lovers to focus on colouring to relieve stress, increase the positive energy in their lives, and and have fun in the process! Advantages of colouring: Many promising studies have been conducted on art therapy. For those who are less inclined to create art as therapy and wanting a simpler solution, they are using colouring books to enrich their lives. Physicians and therapists prescribe colouring for many different illnesses including depression, PTSD, dementia, and even cancer patients to reduce their pain and stress levels in treatment. Everyday, people are also looking for natural and joyful ways to lessen pain and reduce the tension in their lives. By colouring, the mind focuses. This, in turn, allows the brain to replace mind chatter and negative thoughts with positive thoughts. There are many benefits to having a colouring book routine, which include: Achieve a meditation state of mind. The alpha brain waves are present when the mind is sleeping or in a deep zen-like meditative state. When a person is colouring, the brain can get into this soothing, restorative mode. Assuage stress, worry, and fears. This happens in the amygdala portion of the brain where emotions and motivation are integrated. The amygdala gets calmed during the colouring process. Improve fine motor skills. This happens through the repetition of colouring and focusing on a task using your hands to stay within a finite area. Increase creativity. Colouring unlocks the right side of the brain and keeps it stimulated, allowing for more creative thoughts and solutions. This also leads to increased productivity. Relax, gain clarity, and focus. People can also reduce their blood pressure while coloring.

ImagesHeather and Robert Lamont live in Northern Ireland with their Moorfields Cavaliers.Heather writes...."Having bred cavaliers for 35 years, we had made up Irish champions in all colours except ruby, but that has all changed.  In the last 9 months we have made up 3! In September Moorfields Garion (left) got his final Green Star. He is by our blenheim Ch Allegra Hundertwasser von Moorfields. 'Gari's' title meant that 'Vaz' had produced us Champions in all 4 colours. Pretty special and to my knowledge the first stud dog in Ireland to do that. Next to get made up was Brenhora Twist Again at Moorfields (right) bred by John Brennan. We fell in love with her when visiting at Christmas and brought her home...a great gift! His Dad is the tricolour- Ch Gamble On You des Contemplations. 'Twist'was top winning Bitch last year in Ireland. She sparkles with personality but is also the naughtiest character we have ever had. Shredding towels is her main hobby. Our most recent champion is Moorfields Eclat D'Or who has a ruby mum and a blenheim sire.'Oran'(middle) is spoiled beyond belief, rules the roost at Moorfields and even shares Robert's dinner each night.  It has been tremendously rewarding to do well with these Rubies under All rounders and Breed specialists alike. The icing on the cake is that they have all won at the Cavalier Club of Ireland champ shows. Last year 'Gari' was Best Dog under Philomena Leonard. 'Twist' went Best in Show under Steve Watts and this year, 'Oran' went Best in Show under Dawn Hunter. I think its fair to say that none of the judges were known to be Ruby lovers, but said the dogs' qualities were outstanding. So we are very proud of this special achievement. Thanks to all the judges for the awards and compliments here and in the UK when they made a rare appearance."  Reasons to be cheerful...1.2.3 Congratulations to the redheads.

REUBEN RETIRES

It was a sad day for residents in Herrington when JM Tyerman family newsagents finally stopped trading on Saturday as its owners went into retirement. Shirley Tyerman, 70, who ran the shop in East Herrington, Sunderland Tyne and Wear in the North East of England with husband Michael, 72, and sister Audrey Williamson, 54, said they are looking forward to their well-earned retirement.Shirley said: “We are a small family business that has been here for 25 years. Our dog Rueben - a Cavalier - has been in the shop with us since he was a puppy and everyone knows him.He is part of the business as well. ALL OF THE PRESIDENT'S

PUPS   ImagesVSCAJBRB

ImagesGeorge Washington was the first President of the USA and is known for his talents both on and off the revolutionary battlefield. Besides being a formidable military leader, George Washington was an innovative farmer, a crafty businessman and a consummate host. But did you know the most famous founding father was also a founding breeder of the American foxhound, one of the first dog varieties developed in the U.S. Images67RM25NX

George Washington’s home Mount Vernon is located roughly 15 miles south of Washington, D.C. and 8 miles south of Alexandria, Virginia on the banks of the Potomac River, at the southern end of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. According to Mount Vernon historians, Washington is believed to have owned at least 36 American foxhounds and gave them names such as Sweet Lips, Tipsy, Tipler, Chloe, Searcher and Drunkard. He also owned a variety of other breeds, including greyhounds, newfoundlands, briards and various types of spaniels and terriers and was most definitely a dog-lover.  Cr
A new tour at his Potomac River plantation invites four-legged visitors, and their humans, to learn more about how the first president’s canines lived and worked at Mount Vernon.
“All the Presidents’ Pups” walking tours will be offered at 10 a.m. every Saturday morning in June, and again in September and October 2016. The tours welcome both people and their dogs (on leashes, of course) for a walk highlighting what is known about the dogs who lived with the first, first family.

Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis (March 31, 1779 – July 15, 1852), known as Nelly, was the granddaughter of Martha Washington and the step-granddaughter of George Washington and had a small spaniel named Frisk, thought to be similar to the popular Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed of today..

WELCOME TO LAPLAND

UntitledB .....from Dennis Homes (Leogem). "On 29th May I judged the Swedish Cavalier Club’sshow in Pitea in the far North of Sweden. There was a good entry and I was extremely pleased with my winners. Best of Breedwas a 15 month old Blenheim bitch, Cavanzas Malaysia, owned and bred by Andreas & Joel Lantz. Although still quite young and still to reach her prime I felt she has all the desired attributes and shows great promise. Best Opposite Sexwas a tricolour dog, Finnish Ch Giggling Pearl Seekerowned by Ewa-Marie Oderyd and bred by Saija Lepisto. Best Puppywas a Black and Tan, Anni’s Pearl’s Golden Heart, owned and bred by Annika Bucht Haparanda who was most impressive. Best Veteran went to a ruby, nearly 9 years old...Emperex Expression of Wales, owned by Peter Mattsson Sundsvall. So there we are, all four colours which shows that I’m not colour prejudiced!

Norrsken_engelsk_800x467Being so far north and not far from the Arctic Circle I brought plenty of warm clothing but that certainly was not needed. The weather there was quite hot and most people were walking around in t-shirts and shorts. Flying back to London was a bit of a culture shock when I stepped off the plane it was cold and wet!"

THE PEOPLE THAT DID THIS ARE MONSTERS...

Untitled BPolice in Pensacola, Florida, smashed the window of a car to save a Cavalier puppy from a sweltering vehicle, then posted photos of the rescue on Facebook that has gone viral, as a warning to other dog owners. The puppy had been left inside a car in the Cordova Mall parking lot. The temperature outside was 94 degrees, with a heat index of 108. Officer Anthony Giorgio with the Pensacola Police Department was called to the scene after receiving a report that a puppy could be heard whimpering inside the vehicle. “I put my hand in the car and could feel that it was hotter inside the car than outside, I called my sergeant and let him know what I had, and he instructed me to make entry and I broke the window with my police baton." His actions likely saved the puppy’s life,  according to veterinarian Mark Sprayberry. Police posted photos of the rescue on the department’s Facebook page warning pet owners they will act if they see a dog left inside a vehicle on a hot day. “Don’t. Just don’t. If you leave your dog in a hot car and that dog is suffering, we will do whatever we have to do to free it. We will drive your pooch to the caring folks at the Escambia County Animal Shelter and we will drop you off with the caring folks at the Escambia County Detention Facility.”  The rescued puppy was later returned to its owner who was issued a citation. The puppy was still with its mother, which is why it was returned.

What an extravaganza it was. The committee had pulled out all the stops. Excellent organisation, smart dogs, good company, great conversations. The Best in Show ring was a real floor show with spotlights, foot tapping music, the committee dressing up in kilts on day one and on day two they were celebrating in "guinguette" style. Each Group judge was announced and then walked into the ring by two escorts. Such fun.

HAS ANYONE SEEN DAISY?

1781740-CC_DSC_5706

Virginia Barwell (Charlottetown) is distraught after thieves snatched a puppy from the garden of her home in Bourn, Cambridgeshire following a burglary days earlier and has launched a plea to find little Daisy who was snatched between 11am and 1pm on Friday 8th July 2016. The puppy was one of a litter of three and had already been bought by a family who were to pick her up on their return from holiday.

WINTER IN NEW ZEALAND

New_zealandJan Eatock (Darilance) writes "There was another successful outing for some members of the Facebook group 'Cavalier Chat NZ' who live in the Waikato area of New Zealand. They had a mid-winter 'on and off' leash walking around Hamilton's Lake Kainui on Sunday 17 July. After days of heavy rain it was lucky to catch this dry spell for the walk. On their way home a few members who had travelling long distance from Auckland stopped off at Jan & Andrew Eatock's for refreshments and more."

 CLONING A CAVALIER

20160705_Pets_800x600Anyone tempted to have their beloved pet cloned should think again, according to the scientist who created Dolly the sheep. Even a genetically identical dog or cat would probably be disappointingly different from its original counterpart, claims Professor Sir Ian Wilmut. "Before they start they should recognise that it won't be the same," he said. "I have a dog. If we had a clone which had been brought up under different circumstances, its personality would be different, apart from anything else." Cloning could not be guaranteed to produce a carbon copy even in terms of appearance, he added. His dog is a Cavalier, a tricolour.... "If she was cloned almost certainly that coat pattern will be different, even if it was a genetically identical twin, because it all depends on movement of cells during foetal development," said Sir Ian. "In appearance and certainly personality it's very likely to be different."  Sir Ian led the team that created Dolly, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell, at the University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute 20 years ago on July 5 1996. Britain's first cloned dog, a dachshund named "mini-Winnie", hit the headlines in 2014. She was copied from her "mother", a 12-year-old dachshund nearing the end of her life, by scientists in South Korea.

MARY FROM THE

MIDLANDS

At the Midland Cavalier ClubOpen show in July, Mary Rees, who had been Secretary of the Club for 30 years was surprised by a celebration in her honour. Unknown to Mary, Elaine her daughter, friends and fellow Committee members planned this and managed to keep it under wraps. Mary was clearly touched by the flowers, cake, cards, painting of Ch Merrylaine Made To Measure (by Eleanor Mancey) and gifts and warm wishes received for her dedication.

Mary writes" 13653169_10153823544651915_5219308046056719582_oWell now I have recovered from all the excitement I want to thank all those people who made the Open Show on Sunday so very special for me. Of course in future ...
I may have to think twice about which people I can trust completely. What I have learnt is that there are more Cavalier people around who can keep a secret! 13717361_1202890046408206_8499514665957059541_o
Joking aside it was such a wonderful day that I will remember for years to come. All of you who were there have shown that you have generous, loving hearts. It was a very emotional day and I thank everyone who helped make it so. When I was presented with the card I was asked to make a small speech - as everything was such a shock I forgot to mention those people who have supported me throughout the years and made it possible for me to continue as secretary. Everybody knows of my husband - and his jokes - he has helped a great deal and always supports the Midland Club. Then of course their is my daughter who has always been my 'right arm' helping and suggesting things to make the job a little easier. I know that she is there whenever I need her and I love her dearly. 13627239_1202885429742001_8711071150584969458_n
So thank you Ron for all your support - I will try and not ask you to do the tedious jobs as you have stuffed enough envelopes over the years.....and thank you Elaine for always being there. To the rest of our committee I think I may have to be more alert at the committee meetings so that I am not taken by surprise again......"

 GONE FISHING

1558880915588811

Jan and Stan Stegelman from Topeka in Kansas, nominated their Cavalier, Fergy, in the Dog of the Year competition, for her fishing acumen.“Fergy loves to go on the boat and her favourite activity is fishing. She will bark at Stan if he doesn’t get his fishing gear out once we get on the boat andwhen he does start fishing, she will sit and watch the rod tip for as long as it takes...she is very patient. If she sees the rod tip move and Stan does not notice it, she will bark at him. When he does catch a fish, she is very excited and acts like it was partly her catch, as well. We always throw the fish back in, so she doesn’t get to keep them, but she is still excited every day, no matter what the weather, to go fishing!”

HAPPY HOUNDS NEAR

HALIFAX

Hazel Scriven with Benji the Cavalier and Mayor of Hebden Royd, Tony Hodgins with Goldie

Dog lovers and their prized pets descended on Hebden Bridge in Yorkshireto take part in the annual ‘Happy Hounds’event. Held in Calder Holmes Park, the day was organised by Hebden Royd Town Council and Calderdale Council in response to complaints about irresponsible dog owners. But it’s recognised those people are in a minority and the event was designed to celebrate all that’s great about responsible dog ownership. Local dog trainers were on hand to give useful information and highlighted some of the important roles our four-legged friends play in society. Ulti-mutts Agility, based in Sowerby Bridge, ran demonstrations and ‘have a go’ agility classes and there was also a number of fun dog categories, including ‘waggiest tail’ and ‘dog who takes food most politely’.Demonstrations, face painting and children’s entertainment kept little ones entertained throughout the afternoon. The Mayor of Hebden Royd, Tony Hodgins, said: “Hebden Happy Hounds was a great success, the weather was good to us and the turnout was brilliant. The agility dogs were very good to watch and the entries for the fun classes were the best ever and raised over £150 for the Mayor’s charity, for which we are very grateful. “I hope the event can now go from strength to strength and we would like to thank all the stall holders and participants for making it a day to remember.”

The 7 Best Dog Breeds For

Fighting Depression

NjuyArticle by Elizabeth Enochs for Lifestyle magazine.

Speaking as someone who has struggled with anxiety for a long time and currently shares a townhouse with two cats, I can tell you from experience that the mental health benefits of having pets far outweigh any personal sacrifices you might have to make to give them the life they deserve. This is perhaps even more true if you suffer from depression. However, while cats are obviously awesome, there are certain breeds of dogs that can help you fight depression better than cats likely could — namely because dogs are usually more active and affectionate toward their owners.

To be clear, most types of pets can help you fight depression because animals of almost any species can offer us companionship, affection, and structure. Dogs are particularly special, though, because they’re almost always affectionate, active, and co-dependent (in a good way). Moreover, specific breeds of dogs can help you fight depression better than others, simply because different dog breeds have different personality traits.

So even if you feel like you can’t help yourself right now, much less a puppy, you should know that adopting a dog could be a super effective, rewarding addition to your treatment. As WebMD put it, “Taking care of yourself may seem hard enough. But experts say that adding a little responsibility can help. It adds a new and positive focus to your life.”

Here are seven of the best dog breeds for fighting depression.

1. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Aside from their obvious cuteness, Cavaliers can help their owners fight depression in many ways....one being that they love to cuddle. In fact, as Animal Planet put it, the Cavalier is so cuddly that it has been named "the love sponge".

2. Labrador Retriever

3. Poodle

4. Golden Retriever

5. Yorkshire Terrier

6. Viszla

7. Pug

OUR CARING CAVALIER

COMMUNITY Ngy

Meryl Peek (Jadestone) would like to say, through Chatterbox, a huge heartfelt thank you to the great network of Cavalier breeders from all around the World, including the UK, Europe and the USA who have offered and given their help, thoughts, prayers and concerns during Meryl and her dogs' evacuation caused by the huge wildfire in California. Thankfully Meryl, her home and her Cavaliers and Beagles are all safe and well. The wildfire is still burning but is contained and will hopefully be extinguished before too long. Over 82,000 residents were evacuated and 37,000 plus acres have been scorched with 105 homes and 213 other structures destroyed. Meryl has enjoyed enormous success over the last year with her young homebred dog Ch Jadestone Legend Has It, seen here winning under Anita Godwin (Cavaliegh).

MKIOne day last month, Vanessa Creamerwas walking along a suburban footpath with her dog, Rogan Josh, on leash at her side. Suddenly, the dog halted, planted himself, and refused to take another step.Vanessa had no idea why. Then the reason became clear. A few metres ahead stood a fire station. As Vanessa watched, its doors opened and a fire truck rolled out, crossed the footpath a few metres away, and headed off to its callout.Vanessa realised what had happened. Rogan had heard the ding-ding-ding of the fire station's alarm, whereas she could not. He was merely doing his job as her hearing dog. Rogan who is calm and gentle, with a soft face and slightly sceptical brown button eyes has been doing that job for nearly five years. During that time, they've spent almost every minute together. 15556094He travels with her as she goes about her social support work around Wellington in New Zealand. On plane flights – which he loves – he settles on the floor in front of the window seat, next to Vanessa. Cafes and restaurants can sometimes be a challenge, says Vanessa. It seems most people know of "seeing" dogs, but many aren't aware of those whose job is to hear for their human companion. When there's resistance or doubt about Rogan's right to be in a café or shop, Vanessa explains the situation, mentions the status of disability assist dogs under law (the Human Rights Act and the Dog Control Act), and if necessary shows her and Rogan's ID.Vanessa isn't judgmental or impatient about these "teachable moments". She points out that New Zealand has only 60 or so hearing dogs, and that people therefore don't get to meet many of them and have their awareness raised.

15556104Hearing dogs such as Rogan make their human companions' lives safer in everyday ways. At home, Rogan is trained to come to Vanessa, jump up a little, and lead her to the source of a sound she may not have heard: an oven timer, the doorbell, the phone. If the smoke detector screams, Rogan gets Vanessa's attention and drops to the floor rather than leads her toward the sound (which he hates; he glares with distrust at the noisy alarm when it's dormant). If there's a sound at night, he nudges Vanessa's cheek to wake her. This is the job Rogan was trained for. He was donated by a breeder of Cavalier to The Hearing Dogs Organisation near New Plymouth. The socialising and training took about six months, including at the centre's simulated house, which is kitted out with appliances and furniture, to get the dogs used to the home environment. During his training, Rogan was matched to Vanessa. "They try hard to match each person to a dog who'll suit them and their lifestyle," she says. He passed his final exam and joined Vanessa at home. He gets a yearly exam to check that he's still up to the mark. Above and beyond his training, Rogan is protective toward Vanessa. She tells me of a recent time in a supermarket when an unfamiliar, rough-looking man blundered into what Rogan thought was Vanessa's space – Rogan growled in warning at the man. 15556103

And Vanessa tells of her early times as a Toastmasters public-speaking club member, when Rogan insisted on accompanying her to the front every time she spoke at a meeting. A dog is a kind of social passport, and this is doubly true for a disability assist dog, whether the person with the dog is sight- or hearing-impaired, or epileptic, or a wheelchair user.  When people see a dog doing such sterling work, they're drawn to it, and they talk to the person with the dog, and learn of the difference the dog makes. This helps make people more aware of the dog's work and get more used to them being around, and eases the isolation that some people with disabilities feel.

DEAR DORIS

Images3CXPN3M6Sue Brooks (Moonvale) writes with sad news..."It is with deep sadness that I report that Doris Irvine of Shenlyn Cavalierspassed away in the early hours on 23rd August 2016 at the age of 96. She was my friend and mentor for more than 40 years and was a stalwart supporter of Cavaliers. She bred many lovely dogs in particular Ch Shenlyn September Sexton. She had also bred Pyrenean Mountain Dogs, Tibetan Spaniels and Chihuahuas. The funeral will take place in Shenfield in Essex but as yet the final arrangements are unknown.  Family flowers only and donations to Cavalier Rescue and Dogs Trust."

.DSC_0141

Norma writes...."Doris was a quietly spoken, gentle lady who lived in East Anglia and bred some lovely dogs under the Shenlyn affix. A knowledgeable Cavalier enthusiast who must have been thrilled when her home bred Blenheim boy, Shenlyn September Sexton became a Champion in 1999 when Margaret Newton judged the Eastern Cavalier Club show and awarded him his 3rd CC. Sexton lived with close friend Sue Brooks who steered him to his title. When he continued to grace the ring in the Veteran classes, Sue became co owner. Until then she felt the accolades should go solely to Doris. Sexton won 4CCs and 1RCC including Best In Show at the CKCSC show under Judy Wright and Alan Hall. Her friends were thrilled to see her attend the Eastern Cavalier Ch show in 2014 at the age of 94. She looked well and it was plain from this photo taken with Veronica Hull that she was enjoying herself being back amongst the breed close to her heart".

THE SILVER SCREEN

Hqdefault"Victoria" is an 8 part British drama series currently being shown on TV.  It follows the early life of Queen Victoria from her accession to the throne at the age of 18 through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. It also portrays Prime Minister Lord Melbourne as a handsome brooding confidante to the young queen. His troubled past (his wife ran off with Lord Byron) doesn’t stop him from forming a close and almost romantic bond with the new monarch that many disapprove of. Jenna Coleman and Rufus Sewell are making this such enjoyable viewing.

Tumblr_ocqfqmUKd01u6o40go2_400

Cavalier lovers will be delighted to see the tricolour Cavalier "Tori" return again as"Dash".Bred in the UK by Hilary Bartlett (Korolevsky) Tori is a seasoned pro as she also starred in the movie "The Young Victoria" alongside Emily Blunt.  Aged less than a year old, Tori was cast as Emily Blunt's four-legged palace friend, and a royal legacy was born. So it was no bother at all to step back into Dash's furry shoes eight years later – even though Tori's now gone partially deaf. Owner Sonia explains "She can still obviously do magnificent canine acting as long as you’re in vision so you can give her hand signals," and says Tori and Jenna had absolutely no trouble recreating the all-important bond between monarch and palace pooch. "Jenna was great because she’s a dog lover, she’s had dogs in the past so she helped us out all the time with Tori." Regal Tori (who shares her real-life home with Dodger, aka Buddy from Doc Martin) is no one trick pony, though, In fact, she's got quite the film and TV CV. She’s the Spinalot dog from the old Winalot ads, carried a dagger in her mouth after sniffing out the murder weapon in Midsomer Murders, and you can also spot her among the crowds in Keira Knightley film The Duchess. Tori has also acted alongside Matthew Perry in The Dog Thrower, played Miss Havisham’s Jip in Dickensian and will soon play Flossie, one of the Bronte’s dogs in upcoming BBC Bronte biopic To Walk Invisible.

In her downtime she loves nothing more than getting muddied and chasing ducks on her walks at home, though Sonia Turner admits her thespian canine can be "high maintenance, like any royal! When she comes home she walks into the garden, on to the patio, stands still and looks at me as if to say 'I’m the Queen’s dog, do something with me'."

15239762406_873fcce65a_k-e1445174041723-15‘My darling Dash’ — This is the way a young, mid-teenage Victoria would refer to the pet dog of her household. A tricoloured Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Dash did not initially belong to Victoria. The patriarchal figure of her household, Sir John Conroy, had given the dog to Victoria’s own mother as a gift. It did not take long for Victoria to ‘adopt’ the little dog. He was perhaps, the only valuable heirloom she ever inherited from Conroy. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Victoria had hate and contempt for Conroy, who was at the helm of both she and her mothers lives. Her mother had depended on this domineering figure, but Victoria had only suffered in his shadow. It is safe to say that Dash became a form of solace for Victoria. She would walk him, bathe him and even dressed him up in tiny outfits. She was enamoured and devoted. As she was growing a little bit older, she had to think a little more seriously about her duties. However, guarding and caring for Dash was an important one, nonetheless.

WHEELS FOR THE WOBBLY

56256swhidbeyWEB-kj_derpIf your beloved dog has lost the ability to use its legs, fear not. There are animal wheelchairs on the market. K9 Carts has made a name for itself in the animal care world by being the first company in the United States, and perhaps the world, to sell carts, basically wheelchairs for animals, according to owner Barbara Parkes. The company builds support chairs for pups, cats, mini horses and nearly any other animal imaginable that either was born with a disability or is losing the function of its legs. The carts are constructed from lightweight material to help the animals manoeuver without being dragged down by extra weight. Made primarily with metal, some plastic pieces and wheels that vary in size depending on the cart, the wheelchairs are constructed quickly enough that the company sells around 50-75 carts per week. Carts cost $225 for smaller carts, and extra large carts are $525. Rentals are available ranging from $75-$175 depending on the size.

"It’s a service that Washington State is lucky to have when a pet starts to lose function of its legs", said Bellevue resident and customer Howard Eng. Eng recently brought Roxy, his 13-year-old Cavalier into the shop since its little legs started to atrophy a few weeks ago. "We're just fortunate they're here," Eng said. "I read online they're one of the top companies that do this. In the last couple of weeks, Roxy couldn’t even walk 10 feet without stumbling. “It still didn’t look good at the beginning of the session, but once they modified the cart she did so well. To see her walk again was great.”

LUCY...THE STAR OF THE SHOW

Imagesby

  14203248_574948336022611_3755279424511431788_n

Lucy the Cavalier has been named Rescue Animal of the Year at the Animal Hero Awards 2016. They took place on September 7 at Grosvenor House, Park Lane. "Lucy"  was nominated for her work raising awareness of the underground puppy trade in England and Wales. In March 2013, she was rescued, aged eight, by Lisa Garner through Many Tears from a puppy farm in Wales. She’d been treated as a breeding machine and had never been out of her cramped cage. Speaking at Grosvenor House , Lisa said: “I am so shocked to have won, there were some fantastic nominees tonight and I’ve had some overwhelming stories. I think people really engage with Lucy particularly through social media, they think of her as their own dog. Lucy knows she has a purpose in life, she is so well behaved and calm when I take her out to meet people. ImagesOur message is to encourage people to do their research before getting a dog. Don’t just look online – and don’t underestimate the level of deceit from some puppy breeders. Lucy was seriously underweight when she was rescued. She was missing chunks of fur and her back feet touched her front feet from being hunched over in a tiny space. Lucy still suffers from health problems such as epilepsy and is blind in one eye. She has fronted a national campaign against puppy farming. “I think people have fallen in love with her cheeky character and zest for life which she has, even after all she has endured” 14291879_575379269312851_4756205338293019080_n

Many of the winners at the Animal Hero Awards had stories to share. TV star Paul O’Grady was proud to receive this year’s Outstanding Contribution Award. He said “It is very, very, special. You don’t do the work for awards, you do it to make things better. It is funny how much your career moves on and the things you end up doing, but it is just about the changes you make and the risks you take.” But he hoped the awards would go on to inspire a next generation to bring an end to animal cruelty in Britain and abroad. “You only have to look at things like puppy farms and dog fighting…the things they do to those poor animals. But youngsters are the generation that can repair the damage.” seen here with Queen guitarist Brian May and actor Peter Egan

ALOHA HAWAII

ImagesRZFZHYYOKap and Howard Richards were among 14 people who attended a pet remembrance service recently at the Kauai Humane Society. The service, hosted by Kauai Hospice, was a way for people to remember the good times they had with their beloved four-legged friends. The Hospice counsel people on pet loss as well as human loss and this gives people a chance for expression — to express their love for their pet through story-telling, making memory stones and photographs.”

57c277717c3a1_imageDuring the hour-long service, people broke out into small groups to share pictures and memories of their pets. The pictures were then displayed on a table, while participants painted memory stones to honour their pets. "Shorty" Kap and Howard's 12-year-old Cavalier had been sick for a while and had to be put to sleep a few weeks earlier. One of Shorty’s favourite things to do was dig for crabs at the beach which she did right up until the day before she passed.

A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES Cinema-two-cute-dogs-sitting-51509632

849ff0a0-969c-4253-b55f-5548a737eb73Not a single seat remained empty for the first cinema event organized for dogs and their owners in Norway. After different cinema topics like baby-cinema and coffee and knitting cinema for seniors, dogs also got their opportunity in a hall of the Ringen cinema in Oslo. Half of the 70 seats were taken by the four-legged visitors and the rest were taken by dog owners during the showing of Laurie Andreson's movie Heart of a Dog.

The cinema also provided snacks -- popcorn for dogs and were allowed to leave for a while in case some of the dogs become restless. It was the first time such kind of event was organized in Norway, but is already popular in several other countries.

The big interest in Oslo was confirmed when all the tickets were soon sold out. The only thing that was special in this case was that the volume of the movie was muted so as not to damage the animals' hearing.

"We had chosen the hall with leather seats, because these are easiest to clean. The movie is also the last one on the daily programme, so there is some extra time for cleaning and ventilation," Zecca the manager said, and added that she was looking forward to more possible dog events in the future.

One of the visitors, Anna Compton, brought her two dogs to the event, believing that they were happy to come along, although they could not enjoy the artistic aspect of the movie. "Dogs are herd animals and we are their herd. They enjoy to accompany us and not being left at home," she said. While Nora Sarastuen was not sure who enjoyed the movies more, her Cavalier or herself, Kristina Fjone said that her Cavalier liked to watch TV.

Were-back

After what seems like forever, CHATTERBOX is back and open for business. September, October and November have been a whirlwind of travelling and showing. We took in New Zealand, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England for judging and when I got back there were lots of critiques to write. In between we picked up our showing and now have two new Champions and another JW winner, so haven't been slacking! It has been a crazy, non stop few months but finally things have settled down and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Only one more trip this year...to Orlando in December to the CKCSC USA shows and that will finish off a very busy year. Thank you everyone for your patience.......we are glad to be back on track. Here is the first of several catch up issues with lots still to report on. Stay tuned and do keep sending me all your Cavalier news. No matter how trivial you may think it is....if it involves your dogs it is of interest. Thank you.ImagesKNT2GELG

WATCH OUT FOR HORNETS' NESTS

  JS99756804

Tamsin Harman was walking Reggie her Cavalier in idyllic Bradley Woods in West Yorkshire when he disturbed a Hornet's nest. “It was frightening. I was taking Reggie for his usual afternoon wander in the woods on Wednesday when he started to lag behind.I called for him to come but he had found something so was giving it a good sniff. I carried on walking because Reggie always catches up.The next thing I could hear was Reggie squealing and yelping.I ran over to him and he was spinning round trying to bite his back end. As soon as I got over to him I could feel things landing on me, it felt like hot ash all over me.I saw a hornet caught in his fur on top of his head. I clipped Reggie on his lead and ran out of the woods. We took him straight to the vets where he was given an injection of painkillers and some to have at home. My doctor prescribed steroid cream for my bites. The Council were told about it and said they’ll be out in a week to have a look. Reggie is going to the park from now on.” Hornets are pests which aggressively guard their nesting sites when threatened. Their stings are more dangerous than those of bees and in 2014 it was reported that an entire family had been killed following a relentless attack by a swarm of huge hornets in Borneo.

SAD NEWS

Untitled Maurene Milton (Fontelania) writes that Anne Ruffell (Meadholt) died just recently. "It maybe only those in the South who will remember Anne. She was quite a character, a very forthright lady who called a spade a spade and took no prisoners, But we were always friends and I only spoke to her about a month ago after she had suffered a couple of strokes  Although more or less immobile for years she managed to get people to take her to the theatre.  A very determined lady who wouldn't let her infirmities spoil her enjoyment of the things she loved to do in life. We used to go to the Festival Theatre in Chichester many years ago." I recall Anne when we lived and showed in the South. Always interesting to talk to and a bubbly, friendly lady. RIP, Anne

After a nationwide search for Britain’s most active pet,  Lily, who was rescued from a puppy farm in 2014, was chosen from more than 140 entries by a judging panel from NOAH, with the help of two guest judges: Marie Carter, editor of Pets magazine, and Sarah Kidby, from PetFocus. Lily’s athletic abilities and spirited nature caught the attention of the judges during the competition, which ran as part of the organisation’s Happy, Healthy Pets Project.

ACCIDENT PRONE PETS

Cache_4098795964After reviewing nearly 1.5 million pet insurance claims received over the past year, The American Nationwide Insurance has nominated 11 worthy candidates for the 2016  Hambone Award. Each year, the nation's first and largest provider of pet health insurance, searches through its database of more than 575,000 insured pets to honor the most "Unusual Claim of the Year."

In addition, the veterinary hospital that treated this year's Hambone Award winner will receive a $10,000 award through the Veterinary Care Foundation to treat pets whose owners could not otherwise afford treatment.

This year's nominees include a Cavalier.Rocky enjoys taking long naps on the family couch, but one day his comfort turned into a calamity when he slipped between the couch cushions while asleep and dislocated both of his hips trying to get out. A Great Dane who swallowed a whole pair of pants, a Jack Russell terrier who fought off a burglar, a Sphynx cat who was crushed inside a reclining chair, and many more. All nominated pets have made full recoveries and received Nationwide insurance reimbursements for eligible veterinary expenses.

Originally named after a dog who ate an entire Thanksgiving ham while stuck in a refrigerator, the annual Hambone Award has since been given to the most bizarre medical claim each year since 2009. Past winners include: Curtis, a Boxer who swallowed a barbeque skewer that disappeared in his body and nearly ended his life a year later; Charlie, a Labrador retriever who became entangled with a tractor; Ellie, a Labrador retriever who gobbled up an entire beehive and its thousands of inhabitants; Lulu, a hungry bulldog who swallowed 15 baby pacifiers, a bottle cap and a piece of a basketball; Harley, a pug who ate and subsequently passed more than 100 rocks; Peanut, a dachshund-terrier mix who survived a fierce squabble with a skunk; and Winnie, a mixed-breed dog who swallowed two pounds of uncooked onion rings.

WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT ALFIE?

Alfie

Maureen Scott sends us news..."Many of you will know my tricolour bitch Toscam Mckayla who has been moderately successful as a show-dog, but maybe you have never met her “baby brother” Toscam McKenzie.  I prefer to keep bitches at home but when"Alfie" and "Roxie" were the only survivors from a litter of 6 it was too emotional for me to part them. "Alfie" has turned out to be so different from my other dogs and a great character. He was a boisterous boy so I decided to enrol him in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Schemeat my local training club Hillheads Dog Club.  He surprised us all, including my sister-in-law who handled him at classes, by passing his Bronze, Silver and Gold awards at his first attempt after around 3 months training for each level.  He is a very different dog from "Roxie" but I am equally proud of his achievement.

On Sunday, November 6, the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury in Massachusetts hosted “The Blessing of the Animals,” which began with a call to worship led by interim minister Terry Newberry.  Parishioners and guests sang the hymn, “All Things Bright and Beautiful” from their seats, with many holding tight to the leashes of various canine breeds. Reverend Newberry then invited each pet and owner to step up to be blessed at the altar, one by one. One of the first was Sherlock, a Ruby Cavalier.

ROYALTY

UntitledbySome interesting facts from Elsa Marie Kitching who lives in Wiltshire. "Hi Norma, Here is a lovely portrait of Queen Charlotte,  who was the wife of King George 3rd with her toy spaniel .
Charlotte of Mecklenberg – Strelitz was born on May 19th 1744 and died on the 17th of November 1818. She married George  on the 8th September 1761 just a few hours after meeting him and was a keen botanist who helped develop the gardens at Kew. She was not generally thought handsome, but was gracious and devoted to her husband and sadly had to suffer the pain of loss as her beloved husband deteriorated with dementia and she preceded him off this mortal coil.

 BOY'S BEST FRIEND

Dog%20and%20boy_1482533787082_2467431_ver1_0_640_360

A boy battling cancer in Philadelphia got a very special surprise. A new best friend with the help of local firefighters and Justice Rescue. Days don't get much better than this. Ben Buber and his big brother Nathan have just met the best friend they may ever have: a Cavalier puppy named Bentley. This "tail" began back when a man walked into the Medic 10 firestatio on in Mt. Airy, Pennsylvania carrying a stray dog who'd been roaming the streets. The firefighters quickly took a shine to the pooch, but knew they had to find a foster family while they looked for the dog’s rightful owners. Ben and his family took the dog and fell in love. Sadly, they were devastated to learn the rightful owners had indeed come forward. "That was a tough day because I had to go up to the Buber family and pick up the dog and take it away from them,” said Fire Captain John Linker.  The firefighters were not about to let this story of puppy love end with a broken heart. They reached out to Justice Rescue and Russ Harper found them a replacement in need of a good home and a little boy to cuddle with. "Only 11 weeks old but he's already been rescued from abuse,” said Harper.  “He was actually abandoned and dropped off.  So we picked him for the temperament that they generally have and because of the similar story of need.  That puppy is going to need love just like these boys are going to need love." So the firefighters organized a special surprise for Ben, Nathan and their little brother Joseph: a visit with Santa Claus himself. And right there in the kitchen of the Philly firehouse with family and firefighters crowded around a very sick little boy got a brand new best friend.Ben patted the little dog on the head and the pup returned the attention by licking everyone within reach. The firefighters presented Ben and his brothers with a mountain of toys as well. But before long, Ben and Nathan were back lavishing attention on their new friend. As for mom and dad?  They hope a brain tumor is no match for strangers with big hearts. "I'm just overwhelmed,” said Jessica Gans, as she wiped away tears.  "This means the world.  It's everything."  Ben’s brain tumor had been robbing him of his sight.  But mom and dad say that situation has actually gotten a bit better. Now their son has a brand new “nurse” to help him through the rough times ahead. A nurse with four legs, big, floppy ears and a cold, wet nose.

HOW "ART" THOU?

 William_Hogarth_-_Before_-_Google_Art_Project

This narrative painting entitled "BEFORE" by William Hogarth (English 1697 - 1764) describes the moments before a seduction. A young man in red breeches attempts to pull a young woman onto a bed. Struggling, she tries to push him away, dragging her dressing table down with her. Ironically, an open drawer reveals a book on the rules of courtship. Below, a small dog barks, alarmed by the commotion. Sent by Elsa Marie Kitching

Sharrow Bay Hotel, in Ullswater in Cumbria has installed a new shower - specially designed for dogs. The hotel in the Lake District has launched the facility which includes new decor and a rain shower-head, which is at a lower height than normal so it can be used for dogs. It also features a selection of pampering products including argan oil shampoos and conditioners, hairdryer and soft towels. 1-ullswater-hotel-lakeside-viewThe hotel has described itself as "dog-friendly" and this shower is designed to make sure that any guests who take their dog into the countryside to climb a fell or paddle in a lake will be able to clean their pet thoroughly afterwards. A spokeswoman for the hotel said: "Pups arriving at Sharrow Bay are welcomed with a towel to use throughout their stay, treats to eat and can even have bespoke meals arranged for them." Earlier this month Sharrow Bay was one of five accommodation providers in the county to be awarded Cumbria Tourism’s Quality Cumbria ‘Superior’ status.

NEWS FROM CAVALIER CHAT NEW ZEALAND ImagesCRCAMLAU

Jan Eatock (Darilance Cavaliers) writes "When Kelly Toon, one of the Facebook Group 'Cavalier Chat NZ' members, lost her father Mike in heart-breaking circumstances the group displayed true compassion and generosity in donating well over NZ$1,500 dollars to buy flowers and gifts to show their support for a fellow Cavalier owner.  Messages of sympathy and comfort flowed in and members living in the area rallied, taking care of Kelly’s dog Beau, talking with family and visiting Kelly in hospital.   Toon1 During an afternoon visit to her family, Kelly had gone with her father to walk their 2 dogs along a riverside where the dogs liked to swim, when her father's dog got into difficulty.  Sadly the rescue of the dog ended in tragedy with the accidental drowning of Mike, after he had heroically saved his daughter Kelly from the fast flowing river. Kelly was taken to hospital in a serious condition due to hypothermia and near drowning.  Toon2Discharged after 5 days Kelly is home and making a full recovery.  Mike was a very well respected police officer and member of the community in the Manawatu region of New Zealand and will be sadly missed. The Facebook group Cavalier Chat NZ was started just 2 years ago by Andrew & Jan Eatock and the membership has steadily risen to over 500 members across New Zealand.  The group has brought owners and their Cavaliers support, information and friendship, and members hold regular play dates and walks in their own region.

"Honey" the Cavalier starred in a musical at the Tivoli in Wimborne, Dorset earlier this month. The Wimborne Musical Theatre Society happily ignored the old adage ‘never work with children or animals’ and welcomed Honey on stage during a big party scene in their show, Sounds of the 50s and 60s. The society described 18-month-old Honey as “very affectionate and sociable” with a “lovely, calm temperament”. She is owned by a local family who allowed her to take part in the show.Chairwoman Sylvia Walpole said Honey seemed to enjoy her role. “At our recent rehearsals, Honey has been quietly sitting and patiently waiting for her cue. I must get all the members to do that,” she joked.

DOGS AID DEMENTIA

DSC_2180In a small corner room at The Ivey Memory Wellness Day Center in North Carolina,  author Joan O. Wright sits with a group of the facility’s members, who all have memory loss issues. They all are focused on Duncan the Cavalier. One member cuddles and strokes his head, while others comment on how soft his fur is and ask about his age. They talk about dogs they’ve had, and Wright interjects a story about how when she got married, she told her husband that part of the deal was the dog got to sleep on the bed. That elicits laughter from this dog-loving group.Wright has found that Duncan makes this kind of free-flowing conversation possible with a group that might otherwise struggle to talk. Engaging people with memory loss in conversation is one way to help them maintain their cognitive level.“I think Duncan facilitates a higher level of conversation,” said Jen Sexton, program development coordinator at The Ivey, which offers daytime care for people with memory loss due to Alzheimer’s disease and other conditions. “To make that conversation come out, you must have something that stimulates that.“Duncan makes it very easy.”Wright’s work with Duncan was inspired by her own father, a successful business executive and community leader who suffered from dementia the last four years of his life.“The dementia really diminished his cognitive skills,” Wright, 60, said. “When I would go visit him, I would get really anxious about conversation.”Wright’s parents had a Cavalier named Oliver, and Wright noticed that when Oliver was around, her father would engage in conversation about the dog. Time seemed to pass much more quickly during their visits.“The dog would be a safe zone,” Wright said. “We could direct our conversation at, with or about the dog. It gave us a way to connect.”Wright had another experience with pet therapy when her young adult daughter, Emma, was diagnosed with cancer. Emma greatly enjoyed visits from a therapy dog when she was in the hospital. When Wright and her husband got Duncan, their second dog, Wright began considering training him as a therapy dog. Duncan passed the training, and Wright began looking for a place to volunteer. She met a staff member from The Ivey at a Christmas party, and Wright soon interviewed with Sexton to become a regular volunteer with Duncan. She usually schedules her visits in the late afternoon, which fits into her work schedule and is a good time of day for members of The Ivey.Sexton said that members can get anxious as the time gets closer for them to be picked up. Spending time with Duncan in a relaxed, quiet setting “is a chance for them to finish the day well.” Sexton said.Wright typically holds two, 30-minute sessions with Duncan. She comes prepared with conversation starters, including a book about dogs that she shows members and toys for Duncan to play with. In October, she brought her laptop and showed members pictures of dogs dressed up for Halloween in her townhouse community.Depending on the group, the conversation can be hopping. If members have suffered more significant memory loss, the room may be much quieter.“Sometimes just not talking is good too,” Wright said. Some members who don’t speak as much still enjoy petting Duncan and being around him.Marinell Marcus, a member of The Ivey, said that the session with Duncan was relaxing, and she described the dog as soft, gentle and well-mannered.“It just did something to my heart,” Marcus said. “He was just so lovable.”As she leaves The Ivey, she stops to let members who didn’t attend the session pet Duncan. The dog often sparks good memories for members about pets they have owned.“I just love coming here,” Joan said. “Obviously, Duncan does too.”

A HAPPY 'TAIL' ENDING

ImgID84022610_jpg_gallery
Meet Daisy Mai a little dog whose confidence was shattered after enduring two years of neglect has blossomed under the care of her new owner and has even won a show. Anyone who meets Daisy Mai could not help but fall in love with the adorable Cavalier.Although a little on the timid side at first, the smaller than average pooch is friendly and inquisitive with glossy fur and big dark eyes that melted the heart of her owner Cath Magee from Willington, County Durham. But just over a year ago she was a different dog altogether, having spent the first two years of her life starved of care, human affection and veterinary treatment. Her teeth were in such a terrible state she could barely eat, her ears were badly infected and her paws were stained suggesting she was frequently stepping in her own urine and faeces. But what alarmed Mrs Magee most was how terrified she was. “Anyone who knows Cavaliers knows how friendly they are,” she said. “They come running up to you, wagging their tails. She was sat on a leather chair facing the back of the chair and shaking. It was perfectly clear she’d been living in poor conditions.” Mrs Magee is a member of the Facebook group Saving Cavaliers UK, a nationwide network of dog lovers who monitor social media and classified websites for adverts of Cavaliers they fear are at risk. When they saw Daisy Mai’s advert, the wording rang alarm bells and they were concerned she was in danger. “The advert made her sound like a breeding dog but she is so small it would most likely kill her to have puppies,” said Mrs Magee. “We were frightened she would end up with a back yard breeder or at an illegal puppy breeding farm.” The Facebook group works alongside the registered charity West Yorkshire Dog Rescue and it was on behalf of both organisations that Mrs Magee responded to the advert and rescued Daisy Mai, a name she later gave to the dog. She immediately took the dog to the vets and initially planned to foster her until a permanent home could be found. However, having seen her own dogs’ reaction to Daisy Mai and witnessed the extent of her trauma, she knew she had to adopt her “I already had three Cavaliers and as soon as I brought her home they started to mother her,” said Mrs Magee, who runs her own dog walking business, Wag and Walks. “She was so frightened and I knew further change was the last thing she needed, plus by this point we had all fallen in love with her.” Daisy Mai’s recovery was a slow process but as her confidence grew she began to feel at home with her loving new family. ImgID84022539_jpg_gallery

And last month, Mrs Magee took her to Hunwick Dog Parliament’s dog show, where she not only won Bonniest Bitch but was named Best in Show. “I cried at that point,” said her smitten owner. “You could tell she was loving all of the attention. She has gone from always having her eyes down and her tail between her legs, to a dog with a waggy tail and her head held high. It makes me very emotional when I think of what she has been through.”

Daughters of King George 111 by John Singleton Copley in 1785

Sent by Elsa-Marie Kitching from Wiltshirewho writes "Isn’t this delightful – peachy all round. Little Princess Amelia in her  highly decorous“buggy” with her sisters and adorable spaniels. Born at theRoyal Lodge, Windsor on 7th August 1783, Her Royal Highness Princess Amelia was the 15th child and sixth daughter of King George 111 and his very busy wife, Queen Charlotte. The only one of the royal children to be born at Windsor Castle. Amelia was a strong character who unfortunately suffered bouts of ill health, eventually dying on November 2nd 1810,  aged just 25 , on her brother Edward’s birthday.  When she knew she was dying she had a Mourning ring made for her adored father. A lock of her auburn hair set under crystal surrounded by diamonds .Amelia’s love interest was  the Hon Charles FitzRoy, second son of Lord FitzRoy, 1st Baron Southampton. Charles was 21 years older. Though Amelia and Charles wanted to marry the provisions of The Royal Marriages Act prevented them from doing so. How sad was that? Enjoy the portrait. Apparently the artist, like so many before and since, found working with  children and animalsexceedingly trying." Thank you Else Marie for your snippets that accompany the paintings you find and send to Chatterbox.

Charles I: A Royal Prisoner

at Carisbrooke Castle

King_Charles_I,_prisoner_on_the_Isle_of_Wight_for_Carisbrooke_Castle_MuseumCharles I arrived at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight in November 1647 after escaping from Hampton Court Palace in Surrey. He had been held under house arrest for 18 months, most recently at the palace, having surrendered to the Scots in May 1646 after defeat in the Civil War. The Scots had handed him over to Parliament, and while they and the army debated what to do with him, he had decided the wisest course was to slip away. Arriving first at Titchfield Abbey in Hampshire, he opened negotiations with Colonel Robert Hammond, the Parliamentarian governor of the Isle of Wight but also the brother of his chaplain, and thought to be a crypto-Royalist. Presumably Charles believed that being on the Isle of Wight would afford him more freedom to keep in touch with his supporters. But Charles had misjudged Hammond. Arriving at Carisbrooke Castle on 22 November, he placed himself under the governor’s protection; but rather than helping him to escape, Hammond became his gaoler. Initially, though, Charles was allowed considerable freedom, driving about the island in his coach. Many of his household came to join him. A few weeks after his arrival he was even able to sign a military agreement with the Scots known as the Engagement. But after a sympathetic local officer tried to raise the people of the island to help release the king, and with negotiations with Parliament over his future appearing to have stalled, Charles’s imprisonment became stricter. He was confined to the castle, and escape seemed like a good option again. On the night of 20 March 1648, everything was seemingly in place for him to make his escape. Despite the stricter conditions, he was still able to contact supporters outside the castle, smuggling out secret messages via his chambermaid, Mary – and horses and a boat were made ready for the getaway. All Charles had to do was climb out of his bedchamber window overlooking the courtyard, lower himself on a cord, and make his way to the curtain wall. There his page, Henry Firebrace, would lower him to the ground. There was a fatal flaw in his plan, however. Charles had, he told Firebrace, checked that his head would fit between the window bars, 'and he was sure, where that would pass, the body would follow’. But when he attempted to clamber out, with Firebrace waiting below. 'His Majesty … too late, found himself mistaken, he sticking fast between his breast and shoulders, and not able to get forwards or backwards … Whilst he stuck, I heard him groane, but could not come to help him.' Charles-1-cartoon

Undeterred by this embarrassing failure, Charles attempted another escape two months later. He had been moved to another, more secure bedchamber, and a similar plan was hatched for 28 May. This time the bars of his window were loosened in advance with nitric acid, and his guards had been bribed. But there were too many people in on the secret, and two of the guards betrayed it. Charles saw that extra sentries had been posted below his window, and decided to stay put. In the end it was Charles’s political manoeuvrings while at Carisbrooke, rather than his escape attempts, that sealed his fate. Under the terms of his agreement with the Scots, Charles promised that if a Scottish army would help him regain the throne, he would establish Presbyterianism in England. The resulting Scottish invasion, along with simultaneous Royalist uprisings in England and Wales, led to the brief Second Civil War. When the Scots were defeated by Oliver Cromwell in August 1648, the outlook for Charles was bleak. Charles-portrait

When the king finally left Carisbrooke, on 6 September 1648, it was with the approval of Parliament to try to join negotiations with the King on the island in Newport. After their failure he was moved, first to Hurst Castle on the mainland, and then stage by stage to London.

By then, impatient with Charles’s intrigues, and recognising that there would be no peace with him alive, a number of radical MPs and army officers had decided that he should be charged with high treason. He was tried, found guilty, and executed in Whitehall at the Banqueting House on 30 January 1649.

Frank Ballantine (Middleshot) came from Scotland to judge the Regular classes at the Northern CKCSS Open showin Yorkshire on Sunday 22nd January and the Special Award Classes were given to Ron Stewart (Marchog) and between them they had attracted a very respectable entry of 127 from 90 dogs. Hand Made by Fifidog beds 14991947_897746040324953_3761420355644840200_nwere there and as always were selling well. At lunchtime there was a good choice of hot food and I think people like the idea of coffee and tea provided free all afternoon.  Following on from their successful day at Manchester on the Friday, a few of the Committee laid on cup cakes, Prosecco and cake for anyone who cared to join in the celebrations. So there was a lot going on, in and out of the ring. Here are some pics from the days events.

THE SMARTEST DOGS

ImagesAG8TW968There's no easy way to rate dog intelligence. As canine psychologist Stanley Coren wrote back in the 90s, there's adaptive intelligence (figuring stuff out), working intelligence (following orders), and instinctive intelligence (innate talent). In his book " The Intelligence of Dogs ," he featured the results of a lengthy survey of 199 dog obedience judges.

In the Toy Group...I found

TOP TIER....the brightest working dogs, who tend to learn a new command in less than five seconds and obey at least 95% of the time......PAPILLONcame 8th

SECOND TIER......excellent working dogs, who tend to learn a new command in 5-15 exposures and obey at least 85% of the time.....POMERANIAN came 23rd

THIRD TIER.....above-average working dogs, who tend to learn a new trick in 15-25 repetitions and obey at least 70% of the time......YORKSHIRE TERRIER (27th)AFFENPINSCHER (37th)

FOURTH TIER.....average working dogs, who tend to learn a new trick in 25-40 repetitions and obey at least 50% of the time......CAVALIER (44th) KING CHARLES (45)BICHON, (45) HAVANESE (47)

FIFTH TIER...fair working dogs, who tend to learn a new trick in 40-80 repetitions and respond about 40% of the time.....PUG (57) MALTESE (59) GRIFFON (59) IT GREYHOUND (60) CHINESE CRESTED (61), JAPANESE CHIN (62) CHIHUAHUA (67)

SIXTH TIER...the least effective working dogs, who may learn a new trick after more than 100 repetitions and obey around 30% of the time.....PEKINGESE (73)

There are of course exceptions and other ways of measuring intelligence.

Coren tells about a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever he owned that was in some ways too smart for competitions. "He was so bright and attentive that he read my every motion, head turn, and even the direction that I was looking with my eyes, as a command. That made him very difficult to compete with in obedience trials, since, for instance, a glance with my eyes in the direction of the high jump might be interpreted by him as a command and that would send him off, taking the jump beautifully of course, but nonetheless disqualifying us from that round of competition."

De Waal spoke in defense of the Afghan hound (who came last in 79th place) noting that they may not be unintelligent but rather independent-mined, stubborn, and unwilling to follow orders. "Afghans," he wrote, "are perhaps more like cats, which are not beholden to anyone."

HEALTHIER HATTIE

Paula-Gallimore

Staff at Southfields Veterinary Surgery in Sale, Greater Manchester, are offering free 15 minute advice on the correct diet and exercise regime to suit the size and breed of clients’ animals. Southfields’ head nurse Paula Gallimore said: “Obesity is a major issue in pets, as we have seen an increase in the number of overweight pets coming in. A lot of people who come into our surgeries don’t realise their pets are overweight. Many health issues come later in life when it is harder for them to lose weight, so it is a worrying situation. Many owners spoil their pets with too many titbits, treats and scraps off their own plates. Then it becomes a vicious circle because pets can’t walk far as they’re overweight, so don’t get enough exercise. Just like many humans enrol in slimming classes in January, we’ve set up clinics to advise owners on the best diet for their pets. We want to develop good habits.” One of the pets to have already benefited from the weight clinic is nine-year-old Cavalier Hattie, owned by Gill Rossini, from Wythenshawe, south Manchester. Thanks to the practice’s advice on diet and exercise, Hattie’s weight has shrunk from 21.9kg to 19kg in three weeks, and she is on target for her goal weight of 14kg. Ms Rossini said: “Hattie is much livelier and happier, and seems to be healthier in herself. She jumps up to go for a walk, is trotting along when she is exercised and isn’t sleeping as much.”

2016 took so many well known celebrities, as well as many of our much loved Cavalier friends and colleagues who we will miss (listed below are the most recent) ......let's hope that 2017 is kinder and less traumatic for us all.

Images4WMBWUFCPhyllis Cockburn (Phylmars) from Carlisle had been a Cavalier breeder, exhibitor and judge for a long time and was a straight talking, kind and generous lady with a good sense of humour who had been in ill health for a little while. She loved tricolours and her two most famous Cavaliers were the tri boys Phylmars Court Knave 1CC 2RCC and Phylmars Knave of Spades 1RCC. Our thoughts  to husband Reg and daughter Louise at this sad time.

Hilary McQuaid (Hilarny) Sandra Ireland Moger writes...!It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Hilary McQuaid (Hilarny Cavaliers) who died on Boxing Day 2016 of cancer. Typical of Hilary she wanted no fuss, no funeral and no service. She will be remembered by those that knew her for her lovely dogs and zany sense of humour. She was a complete "one off!" She followed no fad or fashion, breeding dogs that fitted her interpretation of the breed standard over many years. Her lovely tri boy Ch. Hilarny The Don remains a great favourite of mine to this day!
She had been a committee member and Chairman of the West of England. Our condolences to husband Peter and children Fiona and James.

Norma writes "Like many, I was a huge admirer of the Hilarny Cavaliers and the Champions "The Don" and "The Gigolo"  were two of my most all time favourites. Apart from these two, Hilary also bred Ch Hilarny Rely on Robin and Ch Hilarny The Siren and a score of more successful quality dogs that graced the ring over 3 decades, 70s, 80s and 90s. She was quirky and she made me laugh. A very knowledgable, dyed in the wool, dog person. Warmest regards to Pete, James and Fiona.

Although we have not seen Heather Wheeler (Drumhaye)around the ring of late, but as a past enthusiast she is often in many of our thoughts... her husband Peter passed away at the end of 2016. He was 94 and I believe he had been in poor health for some time. Thinking of you, Heather.

Nyt,
Dennis Homes
is known to most of us for the beautiful and successful Leogem Cavaliers bred and exhibited together with wife Tina. But he has another
"string to his bow". He is a talented musician, and singer/songwriter. Music has been a passion for a long time and he has been part of the music scene since the early 60swww.dennishomes.net

2017 is an exciting time for Dennis as he has been back in the studio and now cut a solo CD with 10 tracks which has just been released. It is available online as a CD or as a download on Amazon and Apple iTunes both here in the UK and also in the USA. It can also be streamed on Spotify. The American release is handled by the Oregon based music company CDBaby. Available for downloading as a complete album or by single tracks. Here is a link to check out www.cdbaby.com/cd/dennishomes I already have my copy and have listened to a couple of tracks so far and cant wait to hear the album in full....go have a listen. For the music Cavalier lovers out there...Dennis will carry a few copies to upcoming shows.

Katie&Belinda1Jeanie Montford wrote "If you know the history of our breed you will realize that Katie was there at the beginning, the very beginning and won Best In Show in 1946 at the very first Cavalier Club Championship show ever with Belinda of Saxham. Not many breeds can count among their number one of the very original founders of the breed still with us. I am very proud to say that Katie's last Cavalier was a boy from me......Can & Am Ch Elvenhome Boykinia. She had lived with Cavaliers for 72 years when he died."   Inspirational, Katie.....Many Happy Returns

WHAT WERE THEY TALKING

ABOUT?

 DSC00473 - Copy

The photo above was sent in by Dennis Homes (Leogem) of Tina meeting the comic poet Pam Ayres. She is a very clever and hilarious British poet and Dennis tells us he has most of her books. 15079055_1860255070887374_5130520982538780581_nOne of her poems goes

Had a Little Work Done:

O Botox, O Botox, I’m ever so keen,
To look as I looked at the age of sixteen.
Induce paralysis, do as I ask,
Give me, O give me, a face like a mask.
O take up a surgical bicycle pump,
And give me some lips that are lovely and plump,

Young men will stagger and say ‘Oh my God!

Here comes Pam Ayres …and she looks like a cod!’

....... anyone have an idea for a photo caption on their conversation?

Dd70150f9dfe467a3b3a7bf328119487Kari Sundkvist (Glittertind) in Sweden has been very poorly lately and gave her friends and family quite a scare. Hopefully, she is now on the mend and we look forward to seeing her back around the Cavalier ring soon. Regards to Dan and the girls...wemiss you, Kari. Come visit the UK soon

NytNadine Schiefner's mum Petrais in intensive care in a hospital in Germany and needs our support and healing thoughts. Nadine thinks it would be a terrific boost to Petra when she wakes up to feel all the warmth and get well greetings (caring comments have already appeared on Facebook) from all over the world. If friends would like to send Petra a get well card to help brighten up her hospital room when she is finally moved to rehab this would give much needed positive energy. The address is Nadine Schiefner. Am Graben 1. 53902 Bad Muenstereifel. Germany. If UK and overseas Cavalier friends are going to be at the club show or Crufts, the cards can be passed to Tanja Engel to save on postage. All the best, Petra..we are rooting for you

The CannyCavaliers Obreedience team.

Team member Roxanne Hobbs writes "The Canny Cavalier teamonly managed to get to  half of the heats this year, but still finished 3rd in the National League Table, qualifying us for the final at Crufts 2017 on Thursday 9th March.

The competition consists of a round of team heelwork which is marked on keeping together as a team as well as the normal obedience heelwork.
Each of the four dogs then has a set exercise to carry out:
Send away to bed
Stop on Recall
Retrieve an article
Scent work.

The team  consists  of
•Lucy Dawson and Luphenex Let Me Entetain You (aged 6)
•Philippa Biddle and Hearthfriend Hazel Nutkins (aged 7)
•Roxane Hobbs and Wynncliff Lady Karly of Beaconsfylde (aged 12 and a half)
•Barbara Taylor and Taybar Annabella (aged 8)

with reserves:
•Kate Hughes and Ruby Roo Girl (aged7)
•Chris Clements & Cloudywing’s Charlotte of Luphenex (aged 5).

All 6 dogs and handlers have had a chance to compete in the heats and have all done really well. We have had a lot of fun doing it too! Most of the dogs are also successful show dogs,  with 4 out of the 6 being  veterans - proving that Cavaliers not only have beauty and brains, but can be healthy and long lived dogs.
If anyone is coming to Crufts on the Thursday as well as Breed day, why not pop along to the obedience ring around 4pm and support the Canny Cavaliers Obreedience Team."

COOL CATS

P3050041P3050047
Interesting photos from Dorothy Berry (Kurranulla Dalmatians & Cavaliers) in South Africa. "Samantha, the Cavalier, was bred by a friend of mine. Her owners spend a lot of time on the water, usually in kayaks, and Samantha always goes with them. One time the place they stayed at, the owners had recently adopted a Caracal or Rooikat (red cat) which had been orphaned. They named him Ricki. For that weekend he and Samantha became firm friends as you can see from the photos. The caracal is an African lynx and is nocturnal, so for Samantha to curl up with him in his bed in the daytime was perfectly natural!

I had never heard of a Rooikat so looked into them further

CAVALIER SWALLOWED THOMAS THE TANK ENGINEArticle-0-057D5A9D0000044D-699_634x423

15869649-large

A Plymouth Cavalier who swallowed a toy train has survived the ordeal after being rushed in for emergency surgery. Cyril got his paws on a Thomas the Tank Engine toy at the family home. Owner Lesley Mellor noticed something was wrong when the nine-year-old stopped eating and started being sick. Lesley from Torpoint rushed him to the Plymouth PDSA Pet Hospital, where x-rays showed the train toy lodged in his belly. He was taken straight to the operating theatre, where PDSA vet David Jones carried out the life-saving surgery. David said: "Whenever a dog swallows a foreign object, there is a very real risk of a blockage in the intestines, which could be fatal. So once we'd x-rayed Cyril we took him straight into theatre to operate. Surgery like this is very risky, because you never know what you might find, or what damage the object might have caused. Once the toy train carriage was removed, Cyril was back on track and recovering. He was well enough to return home the next day

William-secord-galleryWilliam Secord owns the only gallery in North America devoted exclusively  to paintings of dogs.  "The William Secord Gallery doesn’t seem like the kind of place where dogs run free. Hardwood floors gleam with polish. The gallery’s three display rooms are filled with ornately framed art, all carefully hung on walls painted the deep, flawless shades of a Grandparent’s parlor. The decor here is quietly and firmly elegant— the kind of place where nervous mothers might pull their children’s hands away from everything in sight. Walking around while waiting, I allow the plush rugs to absorb my careful steps, and I wince whenever a bare floor creeks beneath my feet. I am surrounded by antique tables and sideboards bearing carefully arranged copies of Secord’s two lavish books, Dog Painting, 1840-1940: A Social History and Dog Painting: The European Breed. He stands with his feet together as he shakes my hand, and I notice he speaks with a cultured and vaguely European accent. I then learn Secord is Canadian. “I grew up on a farm in the eastern part,” He smiles. “With border collies.” I ask if he prohibits real dogs from visiting the gallery, and Secord reacts as though I have just proposed something against the laws of nature. “I can’t have a dog gallery without dogs!” he happily declares. “Everybody brings their dogs here.” He describes how his furry guests are welcomed with dishes of water and special biscuit treats. He tells me all this matter-of-factly. As we enter his office, Secord apologizes for the mess. Spread all over his desk are materials for a new book— another volume on dog art, this one based on the AKC’s collection. We begin our chat and he tells me how he went south for college, heading for Carlton in Minnesota. After graduating with honors in Art History, Secord attended graduate school at New York University. After academia, he worked at the American Museum of Folk Art. While there, he learned from the museum’s director, a dog person, about the American Kennel Club’s plans for a Museum of the Dog. The eminently qualified  Secord became the founding director and led the museum through its early years.  The AKC, however, decided to move its rapidly growing collection from New York City to a huge, historic home outside St. Louis. Secord wanted to stay in New York and he wanted to open the only gallery in North America solely devoted to fine art depictions of dogs. So, selling paintings from a downtown loft, he tried to raise money for his own exhibition space. Quite successfully. The William Secord Gallery opened in 1990."

THE FAMILY SILVER

The first formed Cavalier Clubs in the UK such as The CKCS Club and The Scottish Cavalier Club have some impressive Silver trophies that date back to quite early days of the exhibition of Cavaliers. In this day and age it seems that fewer winners want to take the perpetual trophies on offer. Such a shame as they are steeped in History and I feel it is quite an honour to be following in the footsteps of past masters in the breed. Some of these, such as the two shown below are really interesting.

The Millais Silver Cup awarded at the Scottish Cavalier Club's Open show for Best in Show.

This trophy was obviously one that had been in the Millais family as it is inscribed...."won by G G Millais on Feb 15th 1877 and presented by A J Clarke-Kennedy Magd Coll Cambridge". Intrigued I tried to find out something about G G Millais.

The legendary Amice Pitt (Ttiweh)was born 1897 and was Amice Millais before she married Sydney Hewitt Pitt. Her father, born 1856, was Sir Everett Millais (and he was the first born son of the illustrious pre Raphaelite Artist Sir John Everett Millais.
Millais_georgegraymillaisThe second born son, born 1858 (and therefore Uncle to Amice|)was George Gray Millais. It appears he was a student at Cambridge when he contracted typhoid fever that killed him at age 20, two years after sitting for this painting done by his father. No idea what George excelled at to win this trophy.

RIP, Anne

An energetic rescue dog from Co Armagh in Northern Ireland has won the top spot in NOAH’s Active Pets competition.

The couple had fifteen children, two dying in infancy which explains why only thirteen are seen  in the garden behind the Queen who appears to be having a little bit of  ‘me time’ with her favourite.

Mmmmm

The three judges officiating at the main classes at the weekend of shows in Orlando were Norma Inglis (Craigowl) Brenda Martz (Brookhaven) and Michelle Chapman (Ellemich). It was lovely to spend the run up to Christmas in Georgia and Florida and the welcome in the South was as warm as ever. Here are a few pictures of the winners over the 3 days

Mumi

CANNYCAVALIERSCERTAINLY CAN

Team StoneleighHeelwork pic HorleyTeam v2 crop

PICASSO FOR DOG
LOVERS
 William-Secord-and-his-Norfolk-Terrier-Nora

WS_1_fiThe world’s leading authority on dogs in fine art is a tall man with slicked back hair and a calm face. He wears a dark suit accentuated by a razor sharp, silver silk tie.
