Britain's Top 10  favourite

dogs

  Top

1. Labrador Retriever 2. German Shepherd 3. Border Collie 4.Yorkshire Terrier 5. Boxer 6. Cocker Spaniel 7. Golden Retriever 8.Cavalier King Charles Spaniel9. Bulldog 10. West Highland White Terrier

The Labrador has topped a poll as the nation's favourite dog, receiving almost double the votes of second-placed German Shepherds. The survey showed that the Labrador is the favourite breed across England, Ireland and Scotland, with only the Welsh preferring the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

A long-running and well-loved ad campaign, for toilet paper brand Andrex, featuring a cute Labrador puppy may have helped cement the place of the breed in the nation's heart. "The Labrador Retriever has always been a firm family favourite, so it's not surprising it topped the poll."

The poll, which was coincided with International Dog Day, showed that the nation is patriotic when it comes to choosing its canines - 80 per cent of the top 10 are British breeds.

Despite the old adage of a dog being a man's best friend, it seems that women are actually closer to their dogs, with 65 per cent of women seeking friendship in dogs compared to 54 per cent of men who tend to prefer larger dogs than women, according to the research. Loyalty, cuteness, cleanliness and discipline are the top qualities Brits look for in their dogs, with half preferring a dog that is quiet, the survey revealed.

THOSE DANES WERE GREAT ImagesY2SAQ7ZE

Gordon and I were invited to judge the entry at the Danish Cavalier Club Festivalin Stoholm on 25thand 26 July 2015. This was only our second visit to judge in Denmark, the last time being 7 years ago in 2008 in Silkeborg when I judged the entry at an All Breeds show.  As we live in the North East of England, close to Newcastle, getting to Jutland is not the easiest route but we managed! Gordon was judging in Sweden in the Gothenburg area just shortly before the Danish show weekend, so we decided to look into getting a ferry from Gothenburg003to Fr450px-Stena_Danicaedrikshaven in Denmark and then driving to Viborg to our motel.

The plan worked out really well. One small hitch was that the ferry we had booked on, collided with a tanker a few days before we sailed! Thankfully another Stena Line ferry was provided and transported us on the 3 hours sea journey from Sweden to Denmark

We arrived Friday and booked into our accommodation and then went out to look around the area. It was a glorious day and Denmark looked beautiful, bathed in sunshine.

IMG_0435

Not so the next day…we awoke to torrential rain. The show, which had been scheduled to be outside, was rethought and quickly moved indoors. Secretary, DSC_0299Suzanne Gamborg met us at the show and introduced as to our Ring stewards who proved to be excellent and a lot of fun.  11760198_10152974013221611_1835305106233961789_nNo language problems at all.  On day one I judged Bitches and Gordon judged Dogs and on day two we swapped. The organisation was first class with an airy, well lit hall and two good sized rings. DSC_0301

On Saturday there were 74 Cavaliers entered (37 males and 37 females). The absentee rate was low, only 5, leaving 69 for assessing. On the Sunday there were 71 (35males and 36 females) with 6 absent, leaving 65

The 14 classes (7 for each sex) consisted of Baby, Puppy, Junior, Intermediate, Open, Champion and Veteran.

As happens in most countries there were more Blenheimsexhibited than any of the other colours with 30 on Saturday/34 on Sunday but surprisingly it was the Rubieswho took second place with 15/13  followed by 13/10 Tricoloursand 11/8 Black/Tans.

Over the 2 days we awarded

Adults…72 Excellent, 24 Very Good and 1 Good

Babies and Puppies….31 Very Promising and 6 Promising

Overall, the stats show that we were pretty happy with the quality of the Cavaliers and on a personal note, I was pleased to see that the quality was generally higher than in 2008. I think the biggest problem that we saw over the weekend and a fault that is being seen more and more worldwide in the breed, is sloping croups. Perhaps in attempting to deal with gay tails this has taken us to the point of extreme. Now we are seeing tails set too low accompanied by a steep croup that falls away. However, the curling tail dilemma has not been solved and is still there but now with the added flaw of a sloping croup and incorrectly set tail. It is so nice to see a well-placed tail that is set on as a continuation of the spine and I am pleased to say that there were Cavaliers in the top awards who displayed this feature. Never double up on a fault if you are breeding and don’t over compensate by going too far in the other direction. Use dogs where possible who are correct in the area you are trying to improve upon. On the plus side, there were some exciting puppies and many adult dogs who were the correct size with gentle expressions. Light eyes were in the minority and coat textures were good. Temperaments on the whole were as expected with friendly, cheerful Cavaliers.

Some of the dogs exhibited were obviously much loved family pets and came for the day because their owners were members of the Club. I hope they enjoyed the outing. It was the Rubieswho impressed us most in the entry and that was reflected in the placings. Well done to the breeders who made this possible. As always we were seeking a small, balanced, well-made dog with a typical head and expression and outgoing personality. We tried to judge and appreciate the whole dog and not over penalise an exhibit for any one feature that was not exactly what is described in the Standard. Grey areas that do not stray too far from the ideal can still be acceptable when considering the total package.  No dog is perfect, so we were not looking for perfection.

The next day we swapped over and went through the entry again. The top dog and bitch were not the same but the variation was only slight and we had no problem agreeing on the ultimate winners.  A different day can see a dog improve or show less favourably. Some dogs show better the second day, whilst others tire after day one.

When asked for advice we always say….”Be honest with yourselves. Look at your dogs, read and understand the breed standard, look again at what you are breeding/showing and be critical. See the areas that need improving and acknowledge them. There is always room for improvement. The opinion of honest, knowledgeable judges is a help but at the end of the day it is you the breeders who make the decisions and chose in what direction your breeding programmes are to go.

Travelling with dogs has never been easier and the Internet and technology has made it easier to consider using dogs around the world. Do what it takes to breed the best to the best."

"It was indeed a feast of Cavaliers, good sportsmanship, super organisation and totally enjoyable. " Norma

BELLA THE BRAVE

2015-08-19_new_12090121_I2Hero dog Bella,a one-year-old Cavalier, could be in line for an animal bravery award after she saved her family from a fire that caused extensive damage to their Belfast home on Tuesday morning.Relatives and neighbours of the Spence family from Campsie Park in the Ballybeen estate in Dundonald say they are lucky to be alive after the blaze broke out.

Bella barked to alert her owners to the fire, thought to have been started by a tumbledryer, and they were then rescued by the Fire Service. Tanya and Paul Spence and their children Amy (13) and Taylor (7) were checked over in hospital and subsequently discharged.

Niece Nicole describes the incident "The dog was in the kitchen in her wee cage and she was barking," she said. "My uncle heard her from upstairs, thought someone was trying to break in, so he went down and opened the door. There was so much smoke. He grabbed at where her cage would be and grabbed her out. They couldn't get out so had to go upstairs and lock themselves in a bedroom and put towels at the door. The fire brigade were then able to get them out.

"The dog is fine, she is showered and fed and happy and really should get an award. She barked and barked and barked. Bella is not a barker, so they knew that something was wrong."

Neighbours said the family had a lucky escape. Among them Jim Nelson, who backed the idea of an animal bravery award for Bella, saying "the wee dog deserves something.I will nominate her".

Fire Service commander Michael Harkin said the family escaped serious injury thanks to the dog and stressed the importance of having a fitted and working smoke alarm.

This year the respectable entry at the Northern club show was judged by Brian Claydon (Brymarden)and Robert Lamont (Moorfields). Here are a few pictures of the day.

WHAT THE VICTORIANS DID FOR DOGS
by David Hancock

Vic

The Victorian era was a time of great change combined with remarkable stability. This was true in the world of the domestic dog just as much as in political and social life. Most of our native breeds of dog were established in this time. The influence of Britain throughout the world meant that British dogs were widely exported and valued abroad. The obsession of the ruling classes with field
sports led to the development of superlative sporting breeds still renowned internationally. The introduction of dog shows, mirroring the livestock and hound shows already held in many parts of Britain, brought a new emphasis on the types of dog previously often only loosely collected into what became recognized breeds.

The founding of the Kennel Club in 1873 gave the world its first
organisation of this type in the world. The first conformation dog show, held in 1859, led to a need for a controlling body, with a framework for the conduct of shows and a system for exhibiting and judging. Vic1Away from the show ring, the gentry favoured their setters and pointers, the humbler hunters their terriers and lurchers, the shepherds their clever herding dogs, the butchers their bulldogs and chimney sweeps their bull terriers. But ornamental dogs became more widespread too as small exotic dogs from distant countries caught the eye of wealthy patrons, sometimes attracting the royal eye too.

Sadly some breed-types were not to be perpetuated and disappeared: our decoy dog, the English Water Spaniel, the Devon Cocker, the Llanidloes Setter, the Smithfield Sheepdog and the Black and Tan broken-coated Terrier. Some breed-types were
subsumed into developing breeds, especially the terrier breeds from more remote areas. This was the time when the pure-bred dog became king and for the first time in our history, dogs became prized not for what they could do but for what they looked like, a new dimension. But on the credit side, many breeds were saved by being brought into public prominence and promoted by dedicated
fanciers. Order and credibility was introduced into the showing and judging of pure-bred dogs.

Royal patronage led to a number of breeds becoming either
known for the first time or more widely favoured. Victoria ascended the throne at the tender age of 18 in 1837, her much-adored Spaniel 'Dash' then being her devoted companion. After her Coronation, it was alleged that she hurried home to bath him. She was to favour and own several other breeds: Dachshunds, Skye Terriers, Scottish Terriers, Pomeranians, Pugs, Maltese and Collies. One of her
Collies, "Squire" was white, not a recognised colour in the breed today. Queen Victoria entered the initial Crufts dog show in 1891, with six Pomeranians, each weighing around 30lbs! Vic2She had kennels built at Sandringham to house 60 hounds, the present Queen's Labradors being housed there today. Her heir, Edward VII, continued the family interest in dogs; he showed Chows, Skye Terriers and Basset Hounds, Queen Alexandra favouring Borzois and 'Japanese Spaniels' too. Edward's funeral procession was led by his close companion "Caesar", a Fox Terrier. The Royal Family's dedicated interest in dogs undoubtedly affected public attitudes both to dogs and to the breeds they favoured in the second half of the nineteenth century.

For Crufts in 1893, the Czar of Russia sent over a splendid team of 18 Borzois, from his hunting kennels. The nobility and landed gentry in Victorian times had a huge influence on dogs, sporting breeds especially. The president of the KC was a duke, as was his vicepresident. In the non-sporting breeds, Lady Alexander favoured Collies, as did Princess de Montglyon. Lady Lewis and Lady Pilkington were members of the Bulldog Club, Lady Brassey is said to have introduced the black Pug to us. More famous in the Pug world were Lady Willoughby de Eresby and Lady Reid. The Duchess of Richmond promoted the Pekingese, with the 'Japanese Spaniels' drawing the support of the Countess of Malmesbury, Lady de Ramsey, Countess Wharncliff, Lady Probyn and the Countess of Warwick. Princess Sophie Duleep-Singh bred quality black Poms. Vic3

This is an impressive list but a very noticeable difference between the patronage of breeds of dog in Victorian times and now, is the almost negligible involvement of the nobility nowadays. Once, their interest guaranteed support for many breeds, a higher profile for the Kennel Club and the promotion of dogs for their sake rather than the bank balance. However I believe it is fair to state that the major contribution to the development of breeds as such came from lower down' the Victorian social scale, from the more plebian fanciers, as well as the dedication of the squires and yeomen breeders.

Grand paintings in stately homes tell us much of the sporting and Toy breeds; you have to go 'folk art' to see depictions of the humbler Bull Terriers, Bulldogs, working terriers, lurchers and the pastoral dogs. Pointers and setters have had whole libraries of books devoted to them, but it was not until the latter end of Victoria's reign
that the terrier and pastoral breeds, owned and worked by the humbler hunters and shepherds, received the literary attention they deserved. Bulldogs, long associated with the disreputable, were given prominence by breeders such as Bill George, and Bull Terriers, once developed for fighting purposes, fashioned by James Hinks, a Birmingham dog-dealer. Both breeds were favoured by sweeps,
boxers and street-traders, as was the English White Terrier, now lost to us. Fox Terriers moved from the hunt stables to the drawing room, with the Rev. John Russell favouring his type in Devonshire. T
he romanticization of the dog was widespread; the Rev Cuming MacDona magnifying the feats of the St. Bernard for example, before selling his St Bernard pups for comparatively large sums. Vic4Landseer depicted the rescue feats of the Newfoundland too, with many Victorian artists recording on canvas the more sentimental side of the man-dog
relationship, at a time when cruelty to dogs was widespread. Dog-carts were banned, not out of concern for traffic flow, but out of compassion for the hard life inflicted on the dogs involved. Sadly too, freak dogs were sought by some misguided people, with dwarf specimens, the heaviest Mastiff, the tallest Great Dane, the Bulldog with the shortest muzzle, tiny terriers, minute Poms and miniature spaniels, often called trawler spaniels, being advertised. Foreign dogs became the desired possessions of those able to afford them - the Schipperke from Belgium, the Samoyed from Siberia, the Saluki from Arabia, the Tibetan breeds, the Borzoi from Russia (two being presented to Queen Victoria, as Russian Fan-tailed Greyhounds) and the Elkhound from Norway.

Vic5
The seeking of exotic and exaggerated dogs, made fashionable in Victorian England has sadly continued; more breeds with a foreign origin are now registered with our Kennel Club than our native breeds. Fashion alone has led to some breeds being overbred and then neglected, as the copycat mentality was expressed. The Victorians set a precedent in these regards which has not been kind to dogs. But their enlightened approach to animal welfare, strongly supported by Victorian society, led to campaigns against the vivisection of strays and the muzzling laws, culminating in the emergence of The National Canine Defence League, founded in
1891 at Crufts dog show. Valuable work by the RSPCA led to dogs' homes being established. After one landmark cruelty case, The Morning Advertiser asked with sarcasm, how the society proposed to regulate the pace of hunting, adding that when even rat-killing and pigeon-shooting would be banned, a true Englishman would have no option but to emigrate. The pace of hunting is certainly different
now.

The long reign of Queen Victoria witnessed huge changes to Britain and the world and the world of dogs was no exception, undergoing changes with far-reaching implications. Britain had a wide reputation as a breeder of livestock; the existence of Empire ensured that British sporting styles and social trends soon spread all over the globe. When, in the days before quarantine, British landed gentry went on sporting tours, their dogs went with them. When British livestock was exported, the herding dogs went too. When the British emigrated or went to work for extended periods in places like India, their dogs went with them. In the second half of the nineteenth century British
dogs became known in most parts of the world.

This widening influence was accompanied by changes at home; dog shows became fashionable, field trials were introduced and both hunting and shooting became 'must-do' events in the countryside. Shows and trials brought a need for registration so that a dog's
identity could be verified. As the range and frequency of shot increased so the needs of  sportsmen in their supporting dogs changed too. In the hunting field the better breeding of hounds received much more attention. Companion dogs too were influenced by greater foreign travel and the subsequent introduction here
of exotic breeds from distant places. At the same time came more focus on animal welfare, the moral repugnance towards some barbaric so-called 'sports', greater concern over the plight of street-dogs, draught-dogs especially, and a move towards more enlightened training and less 'breaking' of dogs.
Vic6
Royal patronage and the obsession of the nobility with field sports gave some types of dog a higher profile. But the desire to produce dogs which closely resembled their parents and bred true to type, a fall-out of the show ring, led to the production of pure breeds. Of course, before that, breed-type was established in some cases with Greyhounds, Beagles, Pointers and Deerhounds usually looking like their ancestors. But from now on closed gene pools were to be respected and purity of breeding revered. For the first time in dogdom, it wasn't just a case of breeding good dog to good dog, both parents had to be registered and out-crossing was frowned upon.
This development has had a marked effect on the well-being of the dog. Breeding from a closed gene pool is fine when things
are going well but disastrous when inbred faults and genetic flaws are
encountered. The Victorian era may have given us the breeds but it has also given us the problems arising from in-breeding, conducted for a century in some cases. Our lives have been enriched by the breeds of dog handed down to us by our Victorian ancestors; now we must use scientific advances and increased veterinary knowledge to capitalise on and not be penalised by the admirable pioneering work done by the Victorians. This is the challenge for the coming century.

THE OTHER "BOE" BOY

!cid_E17010B86DEA483784BB1C3FF00B8DB5@LucysPC

I am not talking about the world famous English tenor Alfie Boe, but the successful Black and Tan Cavalier dog, CH HARANA ALFIE BOE(born on 27th October 2010) who is just as celebrated, but in our canine circles. The lovely ruby, Ch Chamanic Lucasta won 9 CCs in her career, making her the top wholecolour in the history of the breed but at Scottish Kennel Club All Breeds show, a few weeks ago, 'Alfie' went one better, by bringing his CC total to 10 (plus 9 RCC) breaking the record and writing him into the History books. He was steered to this success by his owner/breeder Lucy Kosterand whilst in the past many wholecolours struggled to compete on an equal quality footing with the particolours, 'Alfie' had no problem. This is endorsed by the fact that in 2013 he was TOP CAVALIER in the UK Cavalier KCS Club Points table. The first time a wholecolour has ever won this accolade. His sister ‘Cilla Black’ ran a close 2nd. Since he graced the ring as a puppy he has won at the highest levels at Club shows and General Championships shows going Best in Show at the 2013 CKCSC and the Southern Cavalier Club Championship shows. Now in his 5th year he still continues to shine in the ring, now alongside his notable children.

THE CAVALIER CLUB OPEN

SHOW..part 1

CherrCkcsbdgill Deans (Clockpelters) judged the Club Open show held, as in previous years, at Top Barn Farm, near Worcester. Things looked bleak the night before with wind and rain but good luck was on the side of the Cavaliers and the day dawned bright, dry and the sun made a welcome appearance putting everyone, in ice cream mode! Here are some pics inside the ring...I will do a separate Chatterbox showing what was happening outside...

from Judge Cherrill....

"First and foremost, my heartfelt thanks must go to the Officers and Committee for giving me the great honour of judging the Club’s Open Show at what must be one of the most popular open shows of the cavalier year.   I really enjoyed the day, and was grateful for the opportunity to go over some really top class exhibits.  Hardly any exhibits today had gay tails, I but would just sound a note of caution on not going too far the other way with low tail sets.   Eyes are generally really good now, practically no white of eye seen, and most were of good size and shape.  Heavy rains just the day before had given way to a warm sunshine allowing the show its usual happy garden party atmosphere.   There was an ample ring beside the marquee, set out in the in-out style, making it possible to judge the dogs on the table under cover. My thanks to the stewards looked after me admirably, and for the lunch which was excellent, and for my lovely gift of a picture from a favourite artist which will be much admire".

Toy Group 1and 2 Rexhundar Show 5 9 15 Iceland

UntitledMitzi Morrison (Lewisisle Cavaliers) lives in Worthing and travelled to the Land of Fire and Ice a few weeks ago to judge at the Rexhundar Show. She writes...."I have attached a couple of photographs taken at the Rexhundar Show held on the 5th and 6th September 2015 in Reykjavik, Iceland where I was judging. There were 112 exhibits entered over the 2 days and the entries were mainly Toy breeds with a mixture of breeds from the other Groups. Winning BIS was the the Japanese Chin, Perlukots Fluga who won the Toy Group with Reserve Best in Show going to the Group 6 winner, the Pomeranian INTUCH Skelja Flirter. In the top photo is the Japanese Chin winning the Toy Group seen with the Reserve in Group... the Cavalier Dalsmynnis Bangsi.
In the photo below is the winner of the Junior class the Tri-colour Dalsmynnis Glaour, owned by Puriour E Eiriksdottir, Best of BreedDalsmynnis Bangsiowned by Borbjorg Ragnarsdottir and Reserve BOB the ruby been held by me who is called Dalsmynnis Bingoowned by Dora Johanna Porgilsd.  It was a lovely experience going back to Iceland again as it's about 20 odd years since I went there for a holiday. The Chairman of the Rexhundar Club, Sigrun Simonardottir (an Australian Silky enthusiast) along with the Officers and Committee made me very welcome indeed, plus the lovely support from the exhibitors over the weekend made it an enjoyable judging appointment. There was a lot of cheering and clapping for the Best in Show so I think the Japanese Chin was a popular choice even though it was a youngster.

 PET ME

Reno%20Therapy%20Dog%20smallWhen Joanna Matson and her even-keeled Cavalier, Melinda arrived at the Sacramento International Airport on Friday, the first thing she did was look at the digital displays for delayed flights.“Okay, gates 19 and 20 have been waiting for more than an hour. Well here come the relaxation corps."

Sacramento International is the newest of about 30 airports across the country partnering with volunteer therapy dogs and their handlers in an effort to improve travelers’ experience. Airport officials expect the animals that make up the Boarding Area Relaxation Corps – which yields the adorable acronym BARC – will help relax passengers and make wait times go by faster.

"I’ve never seen anything like it before,”said passenger Kate Carney, while she waited for her flight home to Portland. “People have a certain amount of anxiety about flying and dogs are kind of natural therapists so I think it’s great.” 61c04fe62e7b7c2a820f6a706700dd12

Research has shown that interaction with therapy animals can reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Even if travelers didn’t pet the dogs, passengers’ faces generally lit up when they saw the animals. There are now 21 airport-approved BARC teams. The organization is trying to have teams at the airport two or three times per week at each of the terminals and more often as it recruits more volunteers.

BRIDGETTE'S CRITIQUE......I was delighted to be invited to judge this show and offer my grateful thanks to the committee and my stewards, Maxine Fox- Shone & Cherrill Deans for keeping proceedings running smoothly. I'd also like to thank the exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me for assessment, a good entry numerically, however, marred by a number of absentees.
Temperaments on all exhibits without exception were excellent, I only had one bad bite and all eyes appeared dark.
Now in the spirit of maintaining our lovely breed, and leaving a legacy for those who come after us,  I do have a couple of concerns, although I appreciate this is a members show and not all exhibits are destined for breeding programs, I did find it very difficult to produce a consistant line up, size and type varied.
Trimming ! there is a fine line between, tidying the underneath and hacking all the hair off the feet, this line has clearly been crossed in some instances.

THE CONTRARYCAVALIER!

ImagesO35727BQJoyce Hall from Newton Le Willows in Merseyside  tells this comical story that is so typical of Cavaliers who certainly know what they like and don't like....."Our Lois has been struggling to jump onto the bed and settee since being diagnosed with SM. The latter is not a problem as we are there and comparatively active anyway, so coming and going is just a minor irritation. The bed is another matter, as she obviously becomes uncomfortable and so is restless and then she jumps down and in a little while wants to be back on the bed. After several nights being disturbed on numerous occasions by her whining, and after one particular night when I got up SEVEN times to help her onto the bed, I decided that I’d had enough and searched Amazon  for some steps.

I found a super set, fleece covered, stable and easily assembled, important in a household where the man of the house is dyspraxic. They are the best thing I ever bought but Lois has decided she hates them with a passion and has suddenly discovered that she can jump onto any surface, no matter how high, if the alternative is using those perishing steps!! It was £20 well spent even though they’ve never been used! Now I have had an email from Amazon asking me to review them!" Thanks, Joyce, for that ...made my day brighter just picturing Lois being so contrary.

a long shot I know...but does anyone recognise anyone in this picture sent to me by Sandra Coles? It was taken at Bournemouth in 1952/53 and Sandra received it from Deborah Cobb who used to show Cavaliers along with her mother. The little girl showing the Cocker is Deborah's sister. I guess it was a Junior Handlers class....

IRELAND BOUND?

ImagesKS6Y2DH2Jill Swanston (PAMOJILL) is wondering if there would be anyone interested in organising a coach for the Northern Ireland Cavalier Club "back to back" shows next year with judges Ming Li (Avalcier) on 30th April and Ken Town (Barsac) on 1st May. This might prove to be cheaper if a number were going over with a hotel or B&B package.  As Mary Gaw arranges an Irvine Coach for Crufts, Jill suggests perhaps this could be a possible meeting point.ANY THOUGHTS ANYONE?

THERAPY IN TEXAS

ImagesM96V27RH

 56214a1d37ac4_image

Carol and Gary Hall's 8-year-old Cavalier "Marley" visits the Rape Crisis and Children’s Advocacy Centre in Midland, Texas as a Therapy dog. His greatest gift is his ability to provide comfort at times when no human can.

The Children’s Advocacy Center, established in Midland County in Texas in 1996, conducts forensic interviews for Child Protective Services and law enforcement of children ages 3-17 alleging sexual abuse, severe physical abuse or bearing witness to violent crimes. The goal of the CAC is to limit the number of times a child is interviewed to prevent further traumatization and suffering.

The therapy dog program -- Pawz for Kids -- was developed to help create a more positive and comforting environment at MRCCAC for those children coming in at a crisis point in their lives and often sharing about their abuse for the first time. The impact of therapy dogs on children who have experienced trauma is clear to those who witness the interaction between dog and child every day. Hundreds of colorful handprints line the walls, each marked with a name and date-denoting each young survivor who has come to MRCCAC to tell their story. Despite the brightness of those multi-coloured little hands, it’s an emotional experience to walk through those halls and realize just how many children have suffered from sexual or severe physical abuse or trauma in this community. At the end of the hall, or at the beginning, depending on which way you look at it, is a wall adorned with photos of therapy dogs, those who have passed on and those who are currently serving.

“There was a young girl that came in one time, she was hugging herself in a little ball, wearing a big sweatshirt backwards,” Carol said. “Marley came over to her and just sat with her, leaning against her legs. After a little while, she reached out and put her hand on his head and smiled a little bit. We never know what the kids have been through and we don’t ask them. But somehow Marley knows. Dogs can connect when no one else can.”

Joyce Smith (Fenmist) from Penicuik in Midlothian, Scotland passed away on 20th October 2015 aged 90. Although not active for several years Joyce and husband Charlie still took an interest in the breed. In fact, this year which saw them celebrate their 70th Wedding Anniversary they attended the Scottish Cavalier Club Open show in June. Joyce's funeral took place on Friday 30th October at Mortonhall Crematorium, Main Chapel. Sadly, Charlie is not well at the moment either. Our thoughts are with Charlie and the family.

It is so lovely to win trophies at Cavalier Club shows but these are normally awarded per annum so have to be returned to the Club to be given out to the next winner. The cup shown above is the Paulian trophy awarded at the Scottish CKCS Club Open Showand has gone missing. Can I ask that anyone who has ever attended the Open shows in Scotland have a look on their shelves and in their cupboards as it just may be lurking.

JUST BREATHE

  Ows_144566054794255

4 year old Cavalier, Celia, is patient as her owner lifts her onto the lectern at the Lakeville, Minnesota City Council meeting and was unperturbed when a closefitting oxygen mask was put over her muzzle.

Invisible Fence Brand started the Pet Oxygen Mask Donation Program to provide oxygen mask kits to first responders and have donated eight animal rescue oxygen mask kits to the Lakeville Fire Department — two for each fire station. The kits come with three sizes of masks to fit everything from a kitten to a German shepherd, and a slip lead, a type of leash that lets firefighters or EMTs control a frightened or aggressive dog. An instruction sheet in each kit lists the recommended oxygen level for each animal.Ifbweb-20130911_giving-back_project-breathe_hero_pics

Although the U.S. Fire Administration doesn’t keep track of the number of pets that die in fires, Invisible Fence said its sources have put the number at 40,000 to 150,000 each year. Invisible Fence said the company has donated more than 11,000 pet oxygen masks since it started Project Breathe. After the City Council meeting in Lakeville on Monday, Francis and veterinarian Dr. Paula Schanck of Southfork Animal Hospital headed to the fire station across the street to show firefighters how to use the masks.

“In today’s world, people’s pets are just as much their family as their children. Humans have the priority, but once all the humans are safe and out of the house, in the normal course of our business, if we can conserve the life of a pet, we will.” In one rescue this summer, firefighters found a dog, unresponsive, in the basement of a house on fire. A crew retrieved the pet mask kit, applied oxygen and before they left the scene, that dog was on its feet and loving its owner.

He had a silent heart attack  and has been fitted with a stent to ease the pressure on his heart. UntitledFriends of Alan will be well aware he will want to be up and about as soon as possible...am  sure with his buoyant personality we will see him back with us and around the ring soon. This photo was taken earlier this year when he celebrated his 87th birthday. Take care andhaste ye back, Alan

The Facebook Group 'Cavalier Chat NZ'had another successful event on Saturday 14th November. A Play Date and shared picnic lunch was hosted Philippa's Group photoby Jan & Andrew Eatock (Darilance Cavaliers) on a sunny spring day in the scenic Waikato region of New Zealand. It was well attended with Cavaliers all enjoying socialising, playing chase in the paddock, and using the agility equipment. With regular events held throughout the year the group covers a wide range of Cavalier owners from companion to competition and breeders across New Zealand. Sounds like a fun group

Peter Gustafsson (Vouges) travelled from his home in Gothenburg, Sweden to judge the Cavalier classes and some other Toy Breeds at the NEETDS show held in South Shields. A great entry awaited him. Ted Rogerson's 9 year old grand daughter Maggie swept the boards and handled Rabymar Love Potion to Best Bitch and Best of Breed. THIS IS CANBERRA CALLING

  Nui

Marian Mynott(Honeybet) writes "I had a fabulous time visiting Australia to judge the Canberra CKCS Championship Show in their 25th Anniversary year. I judged day one at their 50th show. What an honour and pleasure to be invited to judge this special show. The hospitality from the club committee was amazing and the welcome from everyone was warm. The dogs were of good quality, making some of the decisions very close.

My main winners were

Steve Mynott took these photos. Thanks go to Barbara Killworth, official photographer, for allowing him to share her backdrop.

After a two nights stop-over in Singapore we completed our journey to Sydney where we linked up with Leila Tarabad and John Whitman. We hired a car and headed off for Canberra, stopping en route at Bateman Bay for a couple of nights. The scenery was breath-taking. When we arrived in Canberra we were looked after so well by the committee and thoroughly enjoyed the city and surrounding areas. I saw Kangaroos, Koala and a Duck Billed Platypus all of which were on my must see list. After the show we drove to the Blue Mountains. John chose the backdrop of The Three Sisters and the setting sun to surprise Leila with a marriage proposal which she accepted, (phew, could have been an interesting drive to Sydney if she had declined). We celebrated their engagement with a meal and some sparkling wine. When we arrived in Sydney, Leila and John went to Bondi Beach to visit friends and we checked in to a lovely harbour hotel for a few nights to take in the sights and sounds of Sydney. We met Prince Charles in the Botanical Gardens where we were able to shake his hand and have a brief conversation with him. From Sydney we travelled to Queensland, to the Whitsunday Islands and Airlie Beach. We took a light aircraft trip over the Great Barrier Reef, so stunning. The next day we took a boat trip around the islands; one stop was Whitehaven beach, 7.5k of white silicon sand with no developments to spoil it. Perfect for swimming in crystal blue water, relaxing or playing beach games. Just watch out for jelly fish and snakes. We recommend a visit to Bowen which has many buildings painted with murals depicting various events. They are very interesting. The Lookout point high above the town provides 360 degrees of stunning views. Photographs do not do these views justice. Thank you Canberra CKCS club and committee for giving me the opportunity to visit your lovely country.

 DEARLY DEPARTED BUYR

ImageGenMargaret Ann Baldwin (Picardy) lived at Sunbury on Thames in Middlesex and sadly passed away on 8th  December at the age of 93.

Close friend Ann Gill(Florindale) writes a tribute..."Margaret Ann was the daughter of Colonel James Baldwin who founded the Picardy kennel and was instrumental in introducing the German Shepherd dog to the UK and getting the “Alsatian” as it as known at that time recognised by the Kennel Club. She showed and handled GSDs whilst still at school and by the mid 50’s she was judging GSDs as well as obedience and trials at Championship and international events. She judged on the Continent, in the USA, Australia and New Zealand as well as a judging tour of Africa. Whilst living in the United States she ran all breed training classes in Alabama and was head trainer for the GSD League of Northern California. In this country she judged Crufts 3 times and the first time she judged at Crufts was also the first time a GSD went BIS. She also twice judged at the RAF Police Dog Championship Finals and also judged at the Metropolitan Police Dog Championships.

MuyWhen the Germanic type of GSD took over she transferred her interest to Cavaliers. She very much admired the Salador kennels and bought a Blenheim bitch from Sheila Smith which she mated to Kindrum Alberto who produced 3 lovely puppies which were shown with considerable success the most well known being Picardy’s Anna-Maria. She also had a Black/Tan bitch from Ruth Mochrie to start her wholecolour line and Picardy’s Corbin went to Bridgette Evans and features in many of her dogs' pedigrees. In her mid-70’s, she served on the Southern Cavalier Committee for 4 years and also edited the Club’s “Cavalcade” magazine. In her later life she also had an Affenpinscher companion.

In the past few years she had been resident in a nursing home. Whilst frail in body she was mentally alert and always eager to hear what was happening in the Cavalier world. She was a lady of immense knowledge, great kindness, generous spirit and very dear friend.

RIP Margaret Ann....your straight talking and candid character will be sorely missed by her friends.

...what a great photo of Janet York's youngsters taken in her home in New York.

HIS HIGH CHAIRPAY-Two-year-old-RonCavalier Ron suffers from a rare condition which means his stomach is unable to digest food. Megaesophagus means he can only eat in an elevated position or risks choking on his food. Ron's owner, Sarah Taylor, was advised by vets to buy a Bailey Chair which are popular in America. When Sarah struggled to find one in the UK, she and her husband resorted to making their own. Two-year-old Ron now eats both his meals, morning and night, in his homemade throne. Sarah, from Flintshire, North Wales, said: "Ron was regurgitating his food and water after every meal.An X-ray showed that after eating, food was getting stuck in his throat as it couldn't pass through his oesophagus."It caused him to regurgitate it and he was diagnosed with megaesophagus. You have to be very careful that they don't inhale any food or water into their lungs due to it being stuck in their throats or from regurgitating as this can cause pneumonia. The vets recommended elevated feeding and showed us photos of Bailey Chairs online."Ron has to sit in his chair for 10 minutes after eating and drinking to let his meal go down."

all Cavalier shows are enjoyable, especially the Nationals which see the best of the best competing. This one was no exception and the effort, hard work and little extra touches put on by the organising show team were much appreciated. Thank you.

HOW TO STOP FIDO

FRIGHTENING

THE FLOCK

5f0339d8e9e4d97000d258f8342e6381

I have a Pit Bull, Boston Terriers and a Chihuahua. When I got our first chicks, I kept them indoors in a wire crate under a heat lamp. Whenever the dogs came up to the crate, I would say, “Easy,” and gently put their paws into the cage and let the chicks nibble on them. As the dogs got used to the chicks, they would lie near the cage, and I would take the chicks into my hand, cover their bodies, and let the dogs sniff and lick them. By the time the chicks could go outside and free-range, the dogs knew they were part of our family, and either played with them or paid them no attention at all. (The Chihuahua had even killed two chickens before he came to live with me!)

Our cattle dogs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are especially gentle and protective of our birds. When the chickens were first introduced, we carefully observed the dogs and immediately corrected aggressive behavior. Since Duchess (our Australian Cattle Dog/Australian Shepherd mix) has started spending all of her time outdoors with the chickens during the day, we haven’t lost any birds to predators. Set limits, praise good behavior, and let your dogs know those birds belong to you.

I have Akitas and an Afghan Hound. They have a strong prey drive and would love a chicken snack, no matter how much training they receive. Our chicken pen is attached to our yard with a 6-foot chain-link fence, and I’ve added hardware cloth around the bottom. I also made sure to get chicken breeds that aren’t flyers. The dogs got used to the chickens and will occasionally run along the fence, but, so far, I’ve not lost a chicken to a dog.

Dog-and-chicken jpg

personally, don't think I would ever take the chance!

NEW MOVIE.. Hallmark Channel....January 2016...UNLEASHING MR DARCY

NUYIn this modern day spin on "Pride & Prejudice," Elizabeth Scott is fishing for direction in her life and gets the opportunity to professionally show her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in a fancy New York dog show. Dog show judge Donovan Darcy comes across as aristocratic and rude and a chain of misunderstandings unfold during the competition, complicating their mutual attraction. In true Jane Austen fashion, Elizabeth and Donovan begin to see the error of their ways and it turns out Mr. Darcy is far more kind and interesting than Elizabeth ever imagined.

The Midland Cavalier Club show is the last Cavalier Breed show in the calendar year. So it always has a Xmassy feel with people swapping Christmas cards and starting to feel the Festive cheer. This year the judges were Sheena Maclaine (Pennygown) doing males and Pam Lewis (Daraste) doing the bitches. Full class results and major winners can be found on this website under show results. ...that was especially true at the Cavalier Club Xmas show where Debbie Coole(Jolainey) was judging. Everyone was getting in the festive mood and the Committee, dressed in their Christmas accessories, put a smile on the faces. Of course, the mulled wine helped! The hall was decked, there was xmas tunes, hot home made food to tempt the appetite and Xmassy themed prizes for the lucky ones. These all added up to a splendid day of good humour and made us all forget for a while the horrid weather outside.Have never seen so many Christmas jumpers at a Cavalier show.

MUSIC TO THEIR EARS?

Bret Stetka is a writer from New York.

"In 2001 musician Peter Gabriel flew to Atlanta to make music with two apes. The jam went surprisingly well. At each session Gabriel, a known dabbler in experimental music and a founding member of the band Genesis, would riff with a small group of musicians. The Bonobos apes were trained to play in response on keyboards and showed a surprising, if rudimentary, awareness of melody and rhythm.

Since then Gabriel has been working with scientists to help better understand animal cognition, including musical perception. Plenty of related research has explored whether or not animals other than humans can recognize what we consider to be music – whether they can they find coherence in a series of sounds that could otherwise transmit as noise. Many do, to a degree. And it's not just apes that respond to song.

Parrots reportedly demonstrate some degree of "entrainment," or the syncing up of brainwave patterns with an external rhythm; dolphins may respond to Radiohead; and certain styles of music reportedly influence dog behaviour. Nuytre

Wagner supposedly honed his operas based on the response of his Cavalier Spaniel above. The German operatic composer, Richard Wilhelm Wagner (1813-1883) was one of the most important figures of nineteenth-century music. Best known as the composer of the series of four operas that make up The Ring Cycle, he had a strong appreciation of the musical taste of dogs. He provided a special stool in his study for Peps, his Cavalier. As Wagner composed he would play the piano, or sing passages that he was working on. The composer kept his eyes on the dog and modified musical phrases based upon how the dog reacted. Wagner noticed that Peps responded differently to melodies depending upon their musical keys.

THE YEAR MAY BE NEW

388305-easter-bonnetOnce again a £20 award is being offered for the oldestCavalier shown at each UK Club Championship Club show during 2016.Below is the list of the 11 Cavalier Club Champ shows 2016 and the people who have generously agreed to donate the prize. Their placing (if any) in the class is unimportant as it is primarily to show that Cavaliers can be fit and well in old age and do not warrant the bad press they sometimes get as being labelled unhealthy. So if you have a fit and well golden oldie maybe they would like a fun day out.

 FIT AS A FIDDLE

Cav_agilityAgility is in every sense of the word a team sport, a combination of speed, consistency, and trust. A sport filled with magical runs, but also frustrating disappointments. Perseverance builds character when training plans don’t succeed and the only choice is to try again. The dedication and commitment of Junior Handlers who compete with poise and confidence is a joy to watch. American Carly Kreiser is nine years old and competes with her Cavalier Sullie. Carly’s favourite thing about agility is running fast with her dog. She trains at home with Sullie’s favorite treat, cheese. Carly’s advice to Juniors interested in starting agility is to have fun with your dog. Carly and Sullie have been working together less than a year, but they have 21 Double Q’s (“double qualifying” earned by completing the agility course within the time provided without faults) and are 48 points away from their Master Agility Champion Title (MACH). In order to acquire the MACH title, a dog must achieve a minimum of 750 championship points and 20 double qualifying scores from the Master Agility Excellent “B” Standard class and the Master Excellent Jumpers With Weaves “B” class.

SHERLOCK BONES

2885933_jpeg_size-600_maxheight-600_square-true

If you want a little light-hearted mystery, Sherlock Bones stars the detective reincarnated as a Cavalier with ability to speak telepathically with his owner Takeru. The dog detective takes this as a sign that Takeru is the reincarnation of his assistant, Dr. Watson. Together, the two take up sleuthing murders on movie sets, students, and even take on the mayor.

WATCH THAT WEIGHT! ImagesQECH5CRI

A leading animal charity highlighted statistics indicating more than five million cats, dogs and even rabbitsin the UK are overweight. Vet charity PDSA blamed the fatty, sugary and downright dangerous treats owners are giving their four-legged friends. Cake, chocolate, biscuits, crisps, chips, takeaway and even alcohol are among the inappropriate items served up by some owners, the PDSA said. The charity stressed that many overweight pets develop potentially life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes, as well as debilitating conditions including arthritis as a direct result of being overweight.

To help fight the flab, it has again launched its Pet Fit Clubcompetition and has invited owners of overweight and obese pets to take part.‘Pet obesity' can be tackled, and through a diet and exercise programme like Pet Fit Clubwe can transform fat pets into fit pets,’ said PDSA Vet. "As well as being high in calories, food like takeaways, cake, cheese, chips and crisps are high in fat and sugars which are bad for our pets’ waistlines and teeth. Some owners admitted to giving chocolate and alcohol, both of which are poisonous to pets and can be fatal.

The PDSA highlighted the case study of

"Lady", the chubby Cavalier from Belfast.

Mi

"Lady",who is an early entrant to the charity’s annual pet slimming competition, was very thin when rescued by current owner last year. But the 61-year-old owner admitted he had gone too far in his efforts to build her back up to health. The additional weight has now caused serious health implications. ‘We got her just over a year ago from a rescue centre but prior to that she was badly treated on a puppy farm,’ explained Mr Palmer. ‘She was skin and bones and had hardly any teeth left. The only food she seemed to eat was chicken, we also gave her treats and biscuits when she accepted them to increase her weight. ‘But over time she’s piled on the pounds. She begs and we find it difficult not to give in to her.‘She’s always had breathing problems but this has got worse as her weight has crept up.‘I know that losing weight will also help her in the long term and I want her to be healthy and live a long life.’

Ottis-spniel_2180448k

another entrant "Ottis" who is an overweight Cavalier from Edinburgh, eats everything in sight and has been known to steal food from the bin. Owner Helen Melrose said: 'Ottis has such a big personality, and he likes to get his own way. He loves sleeping.

 Jack_2180452k

Cavalier "Jack", aged 7, was rehomed earlier this year and is undergoing a complete life transformation, with help from the vets and nurses at Hendon PDSA PetAid hospital. Owner Rose Welch, who is currently in a wheelchair due to her MS, said: 'Although I’d promised myself I wouldn’t get another dog, I heard about a very overweight spaniel that was in need of a good home and I couldn’t bear to leave him to suffer, so I arranged to adopt him immediately. When Jack arrived at our house he could barely walk, couldn’t lie down comfortably and was constantly panting – we were worried he wouldn’t make it through the night. Thankfully he did, and we took him straight to the vet the next morning to start his new diet and fitness programme. We entered Jack into Pet Fit Club as we wanted to raise awareness of the seriousness of this issue: owners may think they are showering their pets with love by giving them treats and extra food, but in reality they are slowly killing them with kindness.'

another "full bodied" Cavalier is "Charlie" from the Midlands

30DFF6F800000578-3431939-image-a-128_1454599522344

It was a case of hair today, gone tomorrow for 10 year old "Charlie" after it was taken to the groomer's for a much needed trim . After the excess hair was trimmed away it also revealed that Charlie had been allowed to pile on the pounds and this was masked by the excessive fur. The dog's owner who absolutely dotes on him had been unable to take him to a groomer and he had become obese. Charlie wasn't getting the exercise he needed anymore, his diet stayed the same and so he put on weight. He is a much-loved dog and his owner is working on getting him back to health and is under strict instruction to watch Charlie's diet and exercise regime.

It is so important that owners recognise that grooming is an essential part of Cavalier care. How much is needed depends on the breed, age, and health of the pet, but regular grooming certainly plays a part in keeping your dog healthy and comfortable. If your dog is fat and overweight you can help him/her by doing something positive...take a look at www.pdsa.org.uk/petfitclub

Flo Sinclair from the Midlands who has two of her Cavaliers working as PAT dogswrites with great news.  "Holly P has been bringing fun and therapy to young patients in the Birmingham Children's Hospital for the last 18 months, so when we were invited to a special Volunteers' Festive Tea Party at a smart canal side venue, I had no idea how special it would be for us. While we were enjoying tea, the Chief Nursing Officer was handing out awards to half a dozen or so of those who had made an exceptional contribution to the hospital during 2015.  When our names were called out to receive the hospital's prestigious Patient Feedback Award for our work with long term sick children, I gasped, put my hand up to my mouth and said 'Oh my God'." Such an honour Flo and so well deserved for your dedication.

Flo continues."A few days later I took Little Joe (Waldor Missouri to ByFloSin) to LKA, where he got Reserve in the Cavalier Veteran Class.  Having seen from the schedule they were holding tests for the KC's Good Citizen Dog Scheme, I thought we would have a try to see what it was like. I was very proud of my boy, who did all the tests perfectly first time, excepting for the 2 minute off lead stay, which he had never done before, but clever lad that he is, after a short chill out break he realised what I wanted him to do and got it.   A little more work on longer stays is needed for the Silver and Gold awards, but with this intelligent and ever obliging Cavalier, I have no doubt that he will be successful.   Good luck in this new venture, Flo. Whatever you do with your boys and girls it certainly reaps all sorts of rewards.

Birthe and Claus Jensenlive in Denmark and have great success showing their "Team Jensen" Cavaliers and King Charles plus Claus does a good job in handling for other owners. What is perhaps not so well known outside Scandinavia is that they also run a thriving dog accessory business selling items such as dry coats, cooling blankets, eye wash, shampoo and conditioner and much more.

DSC05237

All the Shampoos, using only the best ingredients, were developed by Birthe and tested by leading breeders in Scandinavia. 100% environmentally friendly. No chemicals, only good natural raw materials, which helps to calm both skin and coat.

Items that are available can be viewed online at www.drycoat.dk or email info@drycoat.dk

I can vouch that the shampoo and conditioner they make is excellent for the Cavalier coat and the finished result is very satisfying.

6a010535952948970b0133f2a2038f970b-320wiThe Humberside CKCS Clubis organising a 100Clubin an effort to raise funds for its Rescue and Welfare section. Please can you read the information below and hopefully some of you will join up so that they can generate much needed funds for their Rescue.

Those who are interested, please email Sue Robinson at: treasurer.humbersideckcs@gmail.com.

RESCUE NEEDS YOUR HELP
Every year the Rescue club spends thousands of £ to help Cavaliers who have lost owners, been abandoned and are sick and in need of TLC. Often local authorities will put down stray dogs within 7 days – that is why the Rescue needs funds to help.

A tombola, raffles and gift stalls help, as do simple donations, but a more regular source of income is needed. You are invited to become an individual member of Humberside CKCS RESCUEand then participate in a “100” club draw spread over the next 12 months.

Individual members are asked to contribute only £5 a month, £60 in a full year.
£1 of the contribution makes you an individual Rescue Club member with a unique number; the balance goes into the funds. All members will then participate in a monthly draw when membership numbers are drawn randomly for cash prizes.
Initially membership will be restricted to 100 members in the year to March 2017.

The objective is to return 60% of the contribution to members as prizes and thereby to create some £2,400 as a contribution to Rescue funds.

Starting in April 2016 and every month thereafter for 12 months four prizes will be drawn. One of £100, one of £50 and two of £25. All numbers will have an equal chance in every draw, but no number will be able to win more than one prize in any one month.
There will be 11 draws for the above prizes, December 2016 will be the exception when we will have a “SUPER DRAW” with many prizes – “Santa may be kind”
DECEMBER PRIZES
One each of £500, £300, £200, £100, two of £50 and eight of £25.
As before, only one prize per number, but we start with the highest first !!
All prizes will be paid by cheque by our Treasurer, Sue Robinson, each month.

In the event that fewer than 100 people wish to be RESCUE CLUB members, prizes will be scaled down proportionately for a membership between 50 and 100 and if less than 50 applications are received then all money paid will be refunded in full.

In future years the Rescue Club can be expanded if the desire to support RESCUE is evident,
but for this inaugural year, please consider joining and support a worthy cause.
It will be first come first served and membership will close after the first 100 applications have been received by Sue Robinson, the Treasurer. Individuals may have multiple memberships (2 would cost £10 a month £120 a year), but for this year no more than 4 per person will be accepted. You can pay monthly by standing order (just fill in the form), but it would help if an upfront payment could be considered.
All members will be given a membership number by the Treasurer. (it will needed before lodging the standing order with your bank as it must show the number)

Please consider supporting this worthwhile venture

BELLABEATS HER FEARS

Image

A dog that was days away from being put down is running rings round other pets as an agility champion. Bella, the Cavalier, suffered fear aggression issues when she came into the care of Charlotte-Louise Yeaman two and a half years ago. However, her new owner’s faith in Bella has pushed her to become a star in the fast-paced world of agility.

“I got her when she was a year and half,” Charlotte from Kinross in Scotland said. “She wasn’t exactly a rescue as I got her from a breeder but she was quite aggressive when I first got her and tried to attack me and my other dogs. I don’t know what went on in her first home. You could tell she was a good dog, she’d just been treated badly. We have a coal fire and even if you lifted a log to put it in she thought she was going to get belted, so she’d start biting. She was very difficult on a lead as she’d never been on one before. We were walking along a beach one day and I had her on a lead. Two kids walked past and she started snarling and my dad said I had two weeks to sort her or she was getting put down. I calmed her down a lot in two weeks but it took a while to fully sort. Now you wouldn’t even know that she’d been like that – it’s amazing.” The 18-year-old said she was pleased with how far her pet had come in the years since. She said: “I’d done agility with my other dog and I wanted to do it with her but she had a lot of problems which needed to be overcome before I got near that stage with her. I’m lucky as I have a lot of my own equipment so I could teach her basics but I didn’t take her down the club until I knew she wasn’t going to rip a dog or a person apart. In our first year she was brilliant and went up a grade in every show she was at. In 2015 she went up to grade 7, which is championship, she was at Crufts and we were champions in the team event at the World Junior Agility Championships.” Charlotte-Louise and Bella are now gearing up to compete at Crufts for the second time in March. Go Bella...

ImagesSK679IXFDOG BLOOD

TRANSFUSION

SERVICE
Jake, a 6 year old Border Collie cross was with his owner New Zealand Animal services officer Betty Hall when he got the call. “They needed help.....what they really needed was blood – Jake's blood – and they needed it now." It was a life or death situation, and Jake was in the right place and it was at a time where he could make a difference. That's not how Jake had seen the night panning out. He and Betty were headed to Te Puke, where Betty was due to give one of her education evenings for new dogs owners. But things quickly changed. They made a two minute mercy dash to Tauranga Vets . Jake was a rescue dog and now it was his turn to do the rescuing. A Cavalier lay on the operating table and was critically injured after being struck by a car. The call from the vets was for a dog more than 20kg. Jake weighs 23kg so he ticked the boxes. Dog-blood-transfusion-1604-022

The vets slipped a syringe into his jugular, because that vein is superficial and easily accessible, and drew off the blood they needed (it wasn't a lot) and it was then administered to the patient. The vets gave him some doggy treats, some pig's ears and a little squeaky toy. It was just like the New Zealand Blood service where you get biscuits and a drink after donating. “Giving blood was a first for Jake, but I am a regular plasma donor” says Betty.  They presented the Cavalier with a chance. It's all due to Jake, circumstances and a fine team of vets,” says Betty. The latest bulletin from the vets – it was quite a big operation but he spaniel made it through the night. Great story

Launched in 2007, Pet Blood Bank UK is the only charity that provides a canine blood bank service for all veterinary practitioners across the UK. Their aim is to advance animal health and welfare and to relieve suffering by providing quick and convenient access to blood. Similar to the human blood service, dog owners kindly bring along their much loved canine companions to give blood at one of our many sessions across the country. The blood is then taken to our state of the art processing centre in Loughborough where it is separated into red blood cells and plasma products, and then stored ready for despatch.

 AUCTION OF PHOTO ALBUM

A photo album detailing the Duke of Windsor's trip to Germany in 1937 is to be sold at auction. It was compiled and captioned by the Duke's sole equerry, Sir Dudley Forwood, and has been in his family ever since. More than 60 pictures detail the official visits the Duke(former King Edward V111) went on with his new wife Wallis Simpson, who had been the cause of the abdication crisis the previous year. It is expected to sell for around £1000.
SALE%20Duke%20131858Sir Dudley on left with moustache

SirDudleySir Dudley Forwood Bart. passed away in 2001 aged 88 and was the husband of Lady Mary Forwood, breeder of the Eyeworth Cavaliers. Both judged our Breed at Championship show level. The Forwood family had its roots in Lancashire, making its fortune from shipping out of Liverpool. The baronetcy was created in 1895 when his grandfather, Sir Arthur Forwood, was MP for Ormskirk from 1885 to 1898 and who was also secretary to the Admiralty for six years from 1886.
Dudley was educated at Stowe School and afterwards was a reservist in the Scots Guards.
In 1934 he was appointed Honorary Attaché at the British Legation in Vienna. It was whilst serving in Austria that he met the Duke of Windsor, then Prince of Wales, at the Grand Hotel in Kitzbuhel where the Prince and Wallis Simpson were taking a skiing holiday. It was after that meeting that he was attached to the Prince’s ADC Sir Walford Selby. Dudley’s language skills in French and German came to the fore immediately after the abdication when the Duke of Windsor went to stay in Austria to sort out his affairs. It was then that he was asked to become equerry. Accompanying the Duke on his departure from Britain to live in exile in Paris, he travelled in the car to Southampton, moving with them to live in Paris. A year later - after the outbreak of war - he was summoned back by his regiment, the Scots Guards, but remained in close contact with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

A member of the Kennel Club since 1963 Sir Dudley Forwood was elected Chairman of Crufts in 1973 bringing a great sense of dignity and importance to his Chairman’s lunches each day at the show. He remained Chairman until 1987 when the Kennel Club’s ‘75 year rule’ meant he could no longer hold office. A year later he was elected Vice President of the Kennel Club and kept an interested eye on its progress over the years.

When I was editor of the CKCSC magazine "Expressions"....Sir Dudley kindly let me interview him and his answers were, as expected from a great raconteur, enormously interesting and entertaining. Reproduced below from 1997

Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for Archie an 11 year old Cavalier who marked his 500th therapeutic visit at Crestview Public School in Ontario, Canada on 2nd March 2016.
Images
In addition to schools, Archie has pawed his way to 500 therapeutic visits by also visiting seniors in homes and in hospital. “For the past three years, Archie has become a well-known and well-loved friend to many students and has provided much needed support as they learn to read. He is an extremely important and welcome visitor to the school.”
Archie and his handler Gail Bailey have been working with students at a number of schools,  through the Paws for Reading Program. The program, supported locally by St. John’s Ambulance, provides an opportunity for students to improve their reading and build their self-esteem and confidence by reading to dogs.

It was well attended by 58 Cavaliers & 40 owners, hosted by Jan & Andrew Eatock of Darilance Cavaliers. The day was somewhat hot at 26 degrees, but there was a pleasant breeze across the hills, and some cloud cover at times.  A paddling pool was available to help keep the Cavaliers cool. It was a fun filled and enjoyable time with Cavaliers doing Agility, having a go at Rally-O, an obstacle course Egg & Spoon race, and fancy dress. The Regional Cavalier Club Open shows are always popular and gives the opportunity for budding judges to gain experience in dealing with larger classes of Cavaliers than would normally be presented at General All Breed shows where usually 5 classes are the norm. Here are some fun pics and results from shows in my neck of the Northern woods!.....theNorthern, Humberside and Scottish Cavalier 2016 shows.

136 entries awaited main judge Liz Smith (Mulvern) and Special Classes judge Jo Lewis (Carleeto) at the January Open show. I personally love the venue at Thorpe Willoughby near Selby Streetview in Yorkshire with easy access from the A1 and it does seems to lend itself to the feel good factor judging by the smiles of the people attending.  From bacon butties in the morning to free tea and coffee with cake in the afternoon....this show is really geared to provide for the exhibitors and dogs. The Committee work hard to ensure everyone has a great day out win or lose. The lunch time food is hot, delicious and home made and there were a lot of 'compliments to the chefs' heard throughout the day. If anyone has a reason to celebrate, a bottle always seems to appear as if by magic! and shared around. You don't expect to find a bottle of Bollinger in the raffle, but it was the real deal and Sue Brooks who won it, generously opted to share. Congratulations to all the winners and Maxine and Andy Shone had a very special day. Gaining Junior Warrant, Best Dog and finally Best in Show with young tricolour Pamedna Renaissance

BTRJohn Hubbard (POPOLULU) drew a super entry of 90. The Ochil Hills partly covered in snow are a fabulous backdrop to the venue at Alva in Clackmannanshire. Tillicoultry Such a friendly show. The Year Books were handed out and full marks to Carol McKenzie and Gladys Baillie for turning out such a polished publication. I know I always go on about the food! but it is worth mentioning...homemade Lasagne, Macaroni and Cheese, Cottage Pie, Stovies and then meringues, Ian Gibb Stuart's scrumptious Strawberry and Rasperry Cheesecake were all mouthwatering. It was so nice to see 19 entered for the Veteran and Vintage classes, 11 of them were over 10 and several will celebrate their 13th birthday this year. And the young junior handlers were looking very proud of their achievements.

TRIP THE DAISY

Filename_ext_2952037k

This quirkily-named cottage Trip-The-Daisy is a former ale house, mentioned in Pevsner (Architectural Guides...Buildings of England) and is understood to have been built in the late 17th century. It is the embodiment of the quintessential English cottage and has an interesting history having originally been a pub whose owner had a famous greyhound called Trip The Daisy. Situated in the hamlet of Idstone in a conservation area and an area of outstanding natural beauty, not far from Marlborough in Wiltshire. Sent to Chatterbox by Richard Cornaby as it has Cavalier connections....it was previously the home of Pam Escourt (Alemap Cavaliers) and her husband Major-General Edward Estcourt DSO OBE

CAVALIERS HISTORY MAKERS

Crufts lying down

clever and cute Annabelle

The Cavaliers At Work Obreedience Teammade history at Crufts 2016 and were placed 4th in the finals of The Kennel Club Obreedience competition.
All the teams paraded round the area one by one with a lot of support for our team in the stands with many Cavalier flags being waved and lots of cheering.
Team heelwork was next with pattern A being used. We lost 5 1/2 points due to the loudness of the tannoy system making it impossible to hear at times, the stewards commands.
When all teams had completed their heelwork, we went back in as a team to complete the set exercises.
Scentwith Barbara Taylor and Taybar Annabella who bounced down the articles smartly bringing the correct one back for the loss of 1/2 point.
Send to bed with Tracey Smith and Taybar Jemima who made a  fast outrun, lovely hop into her shell bed, curled up with head & paws on edge, clear, with lots of "Ahs" from the crowd.
Stop on Recall with Claire Price and Monamatapa Ngozi Ntombi who waited well but dropped just short of the box for the loss of 3 marks.
Retrieve a Dumbell, Eleanor Hogan and Evaraven Sophie with a lovely quick , smart retrieve for a clear score.

We could not see the other teams rounds so had no idea how we stood. When all teams had completed the set exercises we trooped back into the arena and stood round the edge while the results were announced and awards made.
1st Border Collies loosing 3 points
2nd German Shepard Dogs loosing 7.75
3rd Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers on 8.5
4th Cavaliers At Work loosing 9 points.

How close were those points !! The arena erupted with applause and cheering when the CKCS team were called forward to receive our rosettes.
Afterwards many came and said how much they enjoyed watching our team of 4 Blenheim girls working in the big arena.

I am so, so proud of our four little dogs, they worked their socks off and were not fazed by the heat, lights, noise, music and supercharged atmosphere of the big ring.
Many thanks to my team mates for their hard work & support during the year as we qualified the team, especially to Team captain, Claire for all her hard work organising the shirts and entries etc.  well done Barbara and the Team....you did us proud and it sounds like fun

Elizabeth, Lady Webster, Later Lady Holland, in a White Dress with Her Spaniel by French artist Louis Gauffier (1762–1801) 800px-Louis_Gauffier_-_Portrait_d'Elizabeth_Holland_avec_son_fils

Trivia .....Lady Holland became known for permanently introducing the dahlia to the UK.  An unsuccessful attempt had been made in 1789 by the Marchioness of Bute who brought the plant from Spain, but failed to propagate it.Whilst in Madrid in 1804, Lady Holland was given either dahlia seeds or roots by botanist Antonio José Cavanilles. She sent them back to England, to Lord Holland's librarian Mr Buonaiuti at Holland House, who successfully raised the plants. In 1824, Lord Holland sent his wife a note containing the following verse:

"The dahlia you brought to our isle

Your praises for ever shall speak;
Mid gardens as sweet as your smile,

And in colour as bright as your cheek."

Bred by Irene Murphy of Connecticut he was registered as Martlet-Or Worcester. DEARLY DEPARTED

Images

It was with a great deal of sadness that the Cavalier community heard on 22nd March of the unexpected passing of Michael Brook (Lillico) and he will be remembered fondly by his friends in the breed. He had many qualities that made him popular....cheery, generous, clear thinking, candid and sincere. . He made up 2 champions in the late 80s and early 90s....Ch Lillico Like Basie and Ch Lillico Rusty Dusty Blues and although he disappeared from the show scene for a spell I know he never lost interest. In recent years he became active once again as a committee member of the Northern Cavalier Society and was a great asset. Such a pity that he was unable to fulfil his judging appointment at UK Toydog Championship show on 26th March, an opportunity I am sure he was so looking forward to. A real gentleman from Ripon in Yorkshire. I was proud to call him a friend and will miss our banters as will so many. Our condolences to Patricia and the family. Our lives are poorer for Michael not being around.

VICTORIA, DASH AND

OSBORNE HOUSE

DoOsborne_House,_Isle_of_Wight,_England-LCCN2002708248gs will be welcomed back on the Osborne estate on the Isle of Wight for the first time in more than 100 years. From end of March 2016, dog lovers will be able to enjoy substantial parts of the grounds of the former royal residence, accompanied by their canine companions. General manager at Osborne, Rob Flower, said: "Over recent years, the number of requests from visitors to bring their dogs with them when they visit Osborne has been increasing. "We have looked carefully at how we can welcome dogs, while continuing to care for and present the house and gardens to the highest possible standard.Dogs will be very welcome on leads across the majority of the estate, although not in the house, formal areas of the gardens or on the beach, which is a site of special scientific interest." A map, clearly showing dog walking areas, will be provided at the admission point and the scheme will be for a trial period of one year. It will become permanent if successful.

Queen-02-800

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s love of dogs is well documented. Her first was a Cavalier called Dashand when they married, Albert’s greyhound, Eos, came with him from Germany. A statue of Eos can still be seen on the upper terrace at Osborne. Collies were a particular favourite of the Queen — she had 88 over her lifetime, including Noble, which features in sculpture and paintings on display today at Osborne. Other breeds kept by the Royal family included Dachshunds; Deckel and Waldman, a Pekingese called Looty, and Bout, a Tibetan mastiff, as well as Pomeranians and Pugs.

THE HOUSE OF BOURBON

The House of Bourbon was an extremely powerful aristocratic family of French origin whose members founded royal dynasties in several European countries, exhibiting incredible influence. Small spaniels were a favourite of the families.

"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH

MY DOG?"

The Blue Lady bySheila White
The Isle of Wight has its fair share of haunted houses and ghostly visitors, but none stranger than the story of The Blue Lady who haunts the old house known as Priory-Bay-Hotel-Exterior-720x479The Priory at St Helens.
The Priory belonged to a branch of my grandmother’s family, from the Grose-Smith’s (on my father’s side) in the early 1700s until the last member of the family to live there (my father’s cousin Laura Spencer-Edwards) died in the 1920s. The Priory then, alas, passed out of our hands forever.
I have never lived at The Priory but used to visit, with my parents, as a small girl and loved every stick and stone of the place. It had everything an old house ought, tales of secret rooms, secret passages, buried treasure, smugglers and, of course, the ghost!
Painting1 She, indeed, was the main attraction at The Priory for me: her portrait, full length and almost life-size, hung in the dining room. It depicted a girl of about fourteen or fifteen years old with a little pointed, heart shaped face, seated in a garden, a small canary fastened to one finger by a narrow satin ribbon and a small Spaniel playing at her feet.
Whether or not my cousin knew her real name, I never found out. I never pressed the matter, sensing somehow that that was how she herself preferred it and being perfectly happy myself always to think of her as The Blue Lady.
As for being afraid of her, that was quite impossible for I adored her and would stand transfixed before her portrait gazing up at the little smiling face feeling a strange affinity with her, longing to know more about her and hoping against hope that one day I might see her.
Cousin Laura said she was usually seen tripping down the main staircase or crossing the hall; at other times she was seen flitting about the gardens and quite often on especially frosty starlit nights, gliding soundlessly along the road and across the fields in the direction of the house where I now live, which was once part of The Priory Estate.
It is now over half a century since I stayed at The Priory and in those days lamps and candles were the order of the day, or rather, the night. Every evening the maids placed rows of silver candlesticks with candle snuffers (chamber-sticks I believe is the right word and they are worth a small fortune today) on a chest in the hall right below a stuffed dog in a glass case by the main staircase!
When bedtime came, I would collect my candlestick and light the candle with trembling fingers, trying desperately not to look up and catch the baleful eye of the dog. But, as I went up the stairs, I always found my gaze directed to him and as the candlestick shaking in my hand caused the flame to flicker, it made the dog look as though he were moving. At this point I would race up the remaining stairs as fast as I could to the safety of my room!
We used to wonder sometimes if this dog could really be the original dog belonging to The Blue Lady: he certainly looked a bit worn in parts, but could he really have survived the centuries – certainly two, but possibly three – and still be in one piece? I have no doubts now.
Now comes the really strange part of the story and this, oddly enough, did not arise until after cousin Laura’s death and The Priory was no longer ours. After her death in 1927, The Priory was sold and a very wealthy and charming American lady whom I will simply call Mrs S bought it. One day, we received an invitation to take tea with her, so my grandmother, my mother and I set off to walk through the fields on a lovely summer day. The door was opened to us by a butler who led us into what had been the dining room – where the portrait of The Blue Lady had hung – but which Mrs S had now turned into her drawing room adding to it extensively and putting in some hideous new eight-sided windows that put my teeth on edge. But she herself was charming.
She welcomed us from her wheelchair, behind which stood her Secretary, and beside which stood her magnificent Great Dane, Shadow. It was during tea that she suddenly leant across the table and said, “Is this place haunted?”
I replied that it was. “Don’t tell me by what,” she said quickly, “hear my story first.”
She then proceeded to tell the following incredible tale: it appears that after settling into The Priory, her servants began to give notice. This was not very alarming in those days as there was still plenty of domestic help available. They were replaced as they left and nothing thought of it, except that they probably found life on the Island too dull after London.
It was when her butler, who had been with her for many years, handed in his notice that she realised that there must be something seriously wrong and instantly sent for him to find out his reasons for wishing to leave.
“Do you find it too quiet over here, too cut-off from your friends and family?” she asked. But it was not that.
“It is the noises, Madam,” he told her. “Every night, in the early hours of the morning we hear a child running through the passages crying and sobbing for her dog.” He went on to tell her that as they opened their bedroom doors and gone out into the passages, the footsteps had actually passed them and the sobbing had been heart-rending. “We clearly hear the words, my dog, my dog, what have you done with my dog,” he went on, “and it was more than flesh and blood could stand.” It was obvious that the place was haunted.
Now Mrs S was an intelligent, level-headed businesswoman and she made up her mind, there and then, to get to the bottom of this story. She made enquiries all around the village and found that it was common knowledge that The Priory was haunted. But most people only spoke of a Grey Lady and were very vague as to what she was supposed to do.
In the end, she suddenly switched her researching to the dog. Did anyone know anything about a dog connected with the place - any dog – anything to do with a dog, if so, please let her know? Many people remembered that cousin Laura had had an Airedale, but this was dismissed as having nothing to do with the haunting at all and she was nowhere near a solution to the problem until suddenly, Mr C who was head gardener at The Priory and had been gardener’s boy there at the age of thirteen, remembered that there had been a stuffed dog in a glass case hanging over the stairs!
This was what she had been waiting for. Instantly Mrs S went into action. The distant cousin who had inherited The Priory was contacted and asked if he had taken the dog.
He remembered it and thought it must have been sold at auction with all the other things not wanted by the family.
There followed an advertisement in the local papers, which ended in the dog being traced back to an antique shop in Newport. It was then bought back to The Priory and replaced in its old place over the stairs and from that moment all noises ceased.
“So,” said Mrs S, “tell me who – or what – haunts this place?” We then told her the story of The Blue Lady who had died when still a child and the stuffed dog, said to be hers, which certainly bore a resemblance to the dog in the portrait.

6 DEGREES OF SEPARATION

12795393_1167994369878844_8112519424529000512_n

It really is a small word. USA travellers Renee Bruns (Caryse) and Carmen Spears (Tabu XP) from Oklahoma attended the Cavalier KCSC show held near Coventry in March this year. Ninka Wladzimiruk (Azalea) from Poland was also there. They did not know or meet each other. After the show weekend was over Renee and Carmen did some touristy stuff which included a trip to London and stayed at the world famous Savoy Hotel. Ninka came North to Newcastle.

Here is the fantastic coincidence part....Ninka's son Witek works in the Beaufont Bar in the Savoy Hotel. When we realised all three were there at the same time, it was a simple step to get them together. Renee and Carmen must have brought good luck as Witek has been chosen as the UK representative in the global final of Courvoisier’s Toast of Paris cocktail competition. A hotly contested place.

Last edition's mention of Queen Victoria, Osborne House and 'Dash' prompted Lorraine Hughes (Loranka) to send this picture of an original tapestry of 'Dash'...."Thought you might like to see this, Norma, it is an original very old tapestry my mother bought as an antique when I was a small child". Thanks, Lorraine...what a precious keepsake

UK TOYDOG SOCIETY

ImagesUKT

The only UK Championship show to house all of the Toy breeds under one roof. This year the judges were Mary Drewett (Judyland)who at very short notice stood in for Michael Brook (Lillico) who sadly had passed away unexpectedly and Karen Sandlan (Arenkote).

Relive some great moments (a couple of pics pilfered from Lee!) from the show in these informal pictures. It was Rachel Smith's 50th and Sarah Maddison's 65th...so lots to smile about and celebrate. The UK Ch show results and photos from several of the shows are recorded here on site by Steve Mynott and David Moger www.cavaliers.co.uk ...check them out.

BARK IN THE PARK

  ImgID62717866_jpg_gallery

Canines and their companions went 'walkies' in South Park, Darlington. Co Durham just the other week for an inaugural doggy day out fundraiser

Nearly 400 four legged friends and their well-behaved owners turned out for the first ever St Teresa’s Hospice, Bark in the Park event. Dogs big and small took on the one mile sponsored walk around South Park to help raise thousands of pounds towards the cost of the soon to be opened £1.2 million new ten-bed inpatient unit. Scott Marshall, of St Teresa’s Hospice, said: “Our initial target for the day was 150 dogs and their owners but the response we have had to our first Bark in the Park has been incredible."

A Prizes for dog with the waggiest tail was won by Cavalier 'Charlie' and owner Catherine Dulston who collected a £10 voucher for Pets at Home. Goody bags containing dog leads, biscuits, toy treats and discount vouchers were provided for all dogs completing the walk by Pets at Home Darlington.

THE MARTYR KING

Charles1620-1

Hi Norma....here’s anotherportrait of a companion Cavalier Spaniel with a Cavalier King  - Charles 1st. They seemed to vary in size and shape. I discovered this portrait upon researching the history of Prince Henry, the original heir of  King James 6th of England/1st of Scotlad who died aged just 18 of typhoid fever (amid rumours of poisoning). If he hadn’t died the course of history could have run very differently as Henry was both bright and popular and had the respect of all peoples, whereas Charles was withdrawn, reticent and hugely extravagant, setting inplace inhumane policies. He was also not as fit, physically as Henry. I find our histories so fascinating....thank you for all the hard work that you do. Cheers, Elsa-Marie Kitching (Ixion) Warminster in Wiltshire
