The world of dogs lost one of it's characters when John Fothergillpassed away peacefully. John was a fountain of knowledge in the dog fancy and was well liked and known for his generous and kind ways. He spent most of his life in South Wales where he was a regular at the shows. He was a Championship judge in Cavaliers and King Charles, as well as other Breeds, and enjoyed stewarding at many of the shows where he excelled in the task. Extremely polite and proper and old school, it took ages to get him to call me Norma instead of Mrs Inglis. I know he will be sorely missed by his family and friends and our condolences to them and in particular Brian and Kevin (Ricksbury Cavaliers) who had a very close friendship with John. RIP and so glad to have had the pleasure of knowing you, John
Here are some of John's credentials. (not upto date) John Fothergill attended his first dog show and handled a Standard Smooth Dachshund (black/tan) in Bangalore, South India in 1942. His first major dog show in the UK was Richmond in 1948 where he handled a Bull Terrier. He owned his first Brussels Griffon in 1951 (prefix Berleygill); has worked for a veterinary surgeon; then Glen Kennels (Cairns and Scottish Terriers, Cocker and Clumber Spaniels) also a boarding kennel. In the early '50's he was involved with Crawleycrow Welsh Corgis (Pembroke and Cardigan). He is a retired member, personnel officer and Life Member as well as member and/or officer of many breed and all-breed clubs. He judged his first dog show in January 1960; first Championship show in 1964 (Griffons), 1976 (Pembrokes), 1977 (Cavaliers), 1978 (Cardigans), 1979 (Japanese Chins), 1987 (King Charles Spaniels), 1989 Toy Group, 1995 (Chihuahuas), 1996 (Pekingese). He has also judged breed club shows for the above as well as for Samoyeds, Great Danes, Mastiffs, Tibetan Spaniels, Boxers, Pugs, Pomeranians, Airedales -- nearly 200 shows total, including Crufts in the UK, shows in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Finland, and the U.S. (which he first visited in 1989). He is "interested in every breed" and has a good collection of books on the dog (including Crufts catalogs for over 40 years). He is a weekly correspondent for Dog World on King Charles; also has done the Regional News (South Wales) for 25 years.

DOG DETECTIVES
The Mayor of Bicester, Melanie Magee and her Cavalier 'Hazel', recently joined dog-walkers at the launch of a new fun walk. The event is scheduled for Good Friday and is a three-mile route around Bicester in aid of Medical Detection Dogs, a charity that trains dogs to help people with life-threatening conditions.
Last year after suffering a diabetic hypoglycaemia, where blood sugar levels get dangerously low, the mayor was discovered by one of her spaniels. She said: “When I came round I was drowsy, but managed to get myself some lucozade.” She has backed the charity since last May “I just think it is amazing. The cancer detection work they do is very worthwhile.”

DO OUR DOGS' MEMORIES FADE?
Two dogs were adopted from Rescue where both had a bad time in their previous lives. The older dog, a Cocker with only one ear, was beaten and abused and the other, a Cavalier was rescued from a puppy mill where she spent the first three years of her life locked away in a cage. Today, both these dogs have become two of the most loving dogs. So the question is.... Do dogs, such as these two, remember their pasts, or do the memories fade?
Animal lover and experienced pet owner Marc Marrone suggests.."Only the dogs know what they remember from their past, and it sounds as if these two are having too good a life to waste time and energy on that. We do know that animals do not dwell on the past, nor do they dread or even think about the future. They have no hopes or aspirations and just live for the moment. However, past experiences good and bad do shape an animal's behavior. If an event occurred in the animal's past that hurt it and the event happens again, the animal will remember this situation and react accordingly but it seems that whatever bad things happened have not repeated, and that is why they are so happy and seemingly unaware of how awful their past was".
