The Munster Dog Show circuit is a week in August which consists of 4 shows held at Clonmel, Killarney, Limerick and Tralee all in Southern Ireland and is seriously good for your health, if laughter is anything to go by! It is after all, supposed to be the best medicine. This year seems to have been no exception. The mini break attracts people from "over the water" as well as from the North and South of Ireland.   70Jill Swanston of the Pamojill Cavaliers and531050_10150962762351876_593512977_n Japanese Chins reached a milestone recently when she celebrated her 70th birthday. We first met Jill and her Mum Moira (Stewart) when as  novices we bought our very first show Cavalier from them. She was a lovely Ruby bitch called Pamojill Tabwentai, a daughter of George and Morag Donaldson's Ch Mr Softie of Pantisa. Jill and Moira lived in Portobello, Edinburgh at that time and the year was 1973.  A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then but we will always be grateful for the good start they gave us all those years ago. Cheers Jill, hope your Birthday was special.

THE FENCE JUMPING FOX

Max-1-5853601

Stacey Willis and her mother Kerry saw a fox snatch their Cavalier puppy, Max, and carry him away. It is believed the fox was left ravenous after wheelie bins were introduced to their area, meaning it could no longer scavenge food from bin bags. They followed the cries of the puppy for 45 minutes before they eventually found him being "savaged" by the fox in a power station near to their home in Sandwell, West Midlands. Mrs Willis,  said "One minute Max was mooching about inside the house and the next this fox had him in his mouth and was disappearing over the fence. We rushed straight after him but the fox was too quick. We were desperately searching for him and we could hear Max howling and crying in pain, so we knew he was still alive. It was the longest 45 minutes of my life.Mrs Willis said they were scared the fox would attack them but they managed to scare it away with a metal pole. "When we found him we were worried he was dead, he was so little and we knew he was in a bad way and we went straight to our vets. Max was rushed to White Cross Veterinary Surgery where he was placed on a drip and treated for deep wounds. He made a full recovery. Bonnie Leibowitch said: "Having worked as a vet for ten years, I have never heard of an attack like this before. Foxes can obviously be very dangerous, but to carry out an attack in broad daylight is very uncommon. Luckily Max's owner saw the attack and her speedy response definitely saved his life."

 .......AND ANOTHER CAVALIER IS ATTACKED

 OTIS AND HIS OWNER

Otis the dog

A man spent three days in hospital after being attacked by a bulldog-type  dog in Swindon. Jordan Drury suffered serious injuries to his face and arms in the attack on 4th September and says he is worried the animal is still out there. Mr Drury said he was walking his 18-month-old spaniel Otis in his neighbourhood when he noticed a white, stocky dog bounding towards them. "It was off the lead and as it got nearer the woman, who was with the dog, shouted to me to pick up my dog," he said. "I tried to hold my dog as high as I could and protect him but the other dog kept snapping and launching itself and it was very strong." With the attacking dog "snapping repeatedly", Mr Drury said it not only had his dog's hind quarters in its jaws but knocked him to the floor. "At one point my glasses were taken off, my nose was bitten and it had latched on to my forearm - and it took a chunk out of my arm," he said. "I was trying to make my escape but by this time I was covered in blood." Otis was also hurt but is recovering from the trauma.

BLACK/TANS and RUBIES rule... (almost!)

Sturbridge, Massachusetts in the USA was the venue for a CKCSC USA weekend of shows held at the end of August. One of the judges was Chris Dix (Beeywe) from the UK who delighted Sheryl Skidmore and others with her choices. Sheryl writes  "Thought this might be newsworthy since it’s not often that wholecolors rule the day in the US!My homebred black/tan boy CKCSC,USA & AKC CH Mileslip Licorice JW earned his CKCSC championship, winning Winners Dog and Reserve Best in Show under Chris Dix, (Beewye).  Chris was not done there though!  Her Reserve Winners Dog was the handsome black and tan boy, Turretbank Magic Spell, owned by Richard Green and Katie Sloan, which also finished his club championship!  To top off the day, herWinners Bitch and Best in Show was the top ranked ruby girl, Ch Grandville Butterscotch Kiss Of Infinidad, owned by Tracie Laliberte. Reserve Winners Bitch was Robbie Jones’ lovely homebred Blenheim puppy, Rutherford Byoncee. I must say it was a bit fun to watch all the Blenheim dogs have to come back to the ring to compete for the Best Blenheim dog award, something they are not used to!

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDEREDCanine comfort

Dt.common.streams.StreamServer.cls

When Debbie Vanderwall visited her father, Tom aged 74, at Joliet Area Community Hospice in Illinois, she was stunned to see a Cavalier cuddled in bed with him. 'Gladys' the Ruby was part of the hospice service’s pet therapy and comes every week to see him. Tom who has lung cancer, has always owned dogs for their companionship and looks forward to visits from Gladys and is certain she feels the same way. “She’s always got her tail wagging, sits in my lap and I pet her. It brings me comfort and takes my mind off things.”

NEW BOOK
!cid_C32DB43B-B1EB-412C-9093-5F4A761FF2BA

Libor Kraal lets us know about a new Cavalier book that he has written designed for Czech breeders. "In the Czech Republic there has been, until now, only one Cavalier book by a Czech author and this book is very old. We also have two translations of English books. In England there are many great books with lots of photos of the early dogs when the breed began. It was a sad situation as many of our Czech breeders had never even seen pictures of the first two cavaliers who came to our country in 1975, nor the first kennels in Czechoslovakia. I was afraid that the information and photos of the dogs would be lost, so I decided to write a book. It is an elementary introduction" to the history, written in Czech, and contains 130 pages.
Some of the areas covered in the book.....the first cavaliers who came from England and the first cavaliers bred in Czech kennels. There is a description of the development of the breed standard and a chapter about major breeders. Personalities such as Gladys Deacon and Roswell Eldridge are also highlighted together with an account of famous dog shows from Crufts to the Blenheim Palace show in 2010."

If you want to more about this charming book please contact Libor onlibork@me.com

DSC_0016The place to be in October was Atlanta in Geogia where The CKCSC USA held it's National Specialty hosted by Cavaliers of the South. This was accompanied by two other events, the Trudy Brown Albrecht Rally, and the Elizabeth I. Spalding Memorial Show. If this wasn't enough to satisfy your Cavalier needs there was also Puppy and Veteran Sweeps, an Obedience/Rally, Children’s Handling, Health Clinics and Seminar, Parade of Champions, Banquet, Live & Silent Auctions and the prestigious Top 20 Gala. Truly an enjoyable overdose. The hotel was ideally situated close to Atlanta Airport making it easy for those attending and the popular venue provided everything needed for a truly wonderful extravaganza. 337It even had rooms with a view of the Atlanta Skyline.
I know we all appreciated the hard work put in by Cavaliers of the South and the CKCSC USA who succeeded in putting the SPECIAL into the Specialty in Atlanta. Pulling off something like this takes time, dedication and sheer hard work! It was a feast of Cavaliers and a Specialty that ticked all the boxes. Speaking for all the overseas visitors...we had a blast and enjoyed our visit enormously. Laughter is good for you! It was great catching up with everyone, old and new friends alike. I know how hard everyone worked behind the scenes, whilst the majority of us reaped the benefits. Hospitality in the South is well known and this was no exception. Thank you for inviting me to be one of the Top 20 Event judges...a task I really enjoyed.

Now enjoy some moments captured of the 4 fun packed days.

TOP TWENTY GALA

The “Top Twenty” is an annual competition of the year’s most successful CKCSC, USA conformation Cavaliers who were formally invited to enter and participate in what proved to be a Gala evening. Each of the Top Twenty Cavaliers were judged individually by three judges, Joan Twigg, Norma Inglis and Rebecca Kestle whose names were kept secret until the moment of the competition. There was no conferring between the judges and they scored each exhibit on a sheet awarding points as to their close adherence to the Breed Standard.

These ballots were also tallied and the winner of the People’s Choice Award announced at the Banquet the next evening...

 Stone Mountain....Atlanta...

Stone Mountain features the largest Bas-relief sculpture in the world. Started around 1916 by Gutzon Borglum, later commissioned to complete Mount Rushmore, it wasn't until 1972 that the sculpture was considered finished. Commissioned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the sculpture depicts Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and their horses, Blackjack, Traveller, and Little Sorrel.

Barbara Garnett-Wilson (Laughing Cavaliers) judged the Elizabeth I Spalding Memorial show which brought the proceedings in Atlanta to a close. POTTERY PUZZLE?

Elaine Dempster in Hastings in the USA wonders if anyone has seen this type of Staffordshire Spniel before. She found it in a resale shop. Elaine writes "I'm hoping one of your readers in Chatterbox might be able to give a little history on it or tell me how I can find out as it looks nothing like anything I've been able to find on the internet. Plus there aren't any markings on the bottom."

GEORGIA DOG SHOWS....AKC STYLE

AkcYou would think after 4 days at the CKCSC USA Specialty that we would have overdosed and had enough....not on your life! At the end of the following week we attended shows in Atlanta but this time it was All Breed shows held under American Kennel Club rules. None of the Cavalier judges were breed specialists and this time many of the dogs were not in the hands of their owners but brought to the show and handled by professionals. Without exception every Cavalier was turned out in immaculate condition, not a hair out of place. In many other breeds, behind the scenes was a 'work in progress' as many got their dogs ready for the ring. Bathed, dried, styled, shaped, whatever it took to get them to the high standard required to impress the judges. Personally, it was all too much for me, much preferring the more natural, but possibly more amateurish presentation of my own breed at home. Perhaps the glamour factor isnt such an important factor in the UK. But all to his own and it was just my impression. I did find it quite sad to see the docile, almost doleful look in the eyes of some of the spunky breeds as they stood on their grooming tables, noosed in place, just waiting passively for their handler to return for more 'finishing'. Of course, there were dogs who were presented and exhibited by their owners and it was nice to see them get recognition when it was deserved. Here are some sights from the show ......

HENRY, THE DEAF CAVALIER WHO LOVES TO DANCE

  !cid_inlineImage1

Meet Sandy and her Cavalier 'Henry'. After going deaf 3 years ago, Henry learned sign language so he could continue dancing with his owner, Sandra Hallam, of Carlton-on-Trent who says “He always loved dancing and after he went deaf, I could tell he still wanted to do it. I retaught him everything in sign language, teaching him to follow hand signals rather than voice commands". Henry (Tashmit Freeserve at Oldberne) follows finger, hand and leg signals to perform the moves most dogs learn as part of heelwork-to-music routines. Although not able to hear the standard clicker that trainers use to indicate a job well done, Henry simply gets the thumbs up instead.

You may have seen them last Xmas when they took part and came third in Simon Cowell's TV show 'That Dog Can Dance'. Well the good news is that they continued to compete in regular Kennel Club Heelwork to music shows and achieved amazing things.
'Henry' is not only the first Cavalier to get to Advanced Freestyle, but also the first Deaf dog! He is now also the first Cavalier to qualify for the Crufts semi final show in January.
"We have had a thoroughly amazing year demonstrating all over the country having lots of fun and I thought it would be nice to show through Chatterbox how clever this wonderful breed is, as well as beautiful"

Sandy and Henry, you do the Breed proud....good luck for Crufts 2014

DANISH

DELIGHTS

Jens and Dorte from Cavachoice Cavaliers in Denmark write with news...

It rarely happens that a Cavalier does well in the main ring in Denmark but Sunday, 13th of October was an exception!

Louis

Our 7 year old ruby boy, 'Louis' (CH Cava Choice Ambitious Alexander)went all the way at the Tholo show in Aars. The All Breeds show had an overall entry of 589 dogs and Cavaliers was judged by the Danish judge, Helle Dan Pålsson with one of the largest entries of approx 80 cavaliers. Best of Breed went to 'Louis', Best Opposite Sex and Bitch CC went to Cava Choice Hot Constellation (see below)The CC in the males went to a Junior, Sushi Do Monte Santa Maria owned by Claus Jensen. Later on, the finals were judged by Erling Kjær-Petersen, also from Denmark. We were absolutely thrilled when it was announced that 'Louis' took Best In Show. Despite sporting a few grey hairs, he still takes real pleasure in showing.

Louis bis

'Louis' winning Best in Show

One of the main events in the Danish Kennel Club is the 2 day international dog show in Herning. It attracts lots of people, visitors as well as exhibitors, from most of Scandinavia. In recent years Sunday's show in Herning has been the Danish Winner show too, which means that BOS and BOB will gain the title DKV13 and the winners of the junior classes will gain the DKJW13.On Saturday, 59 cavaliers were entered under Robert Schill from Romania.

Best of Breed, CC and CACIBwent to Cava Choice Hot Constellation who finally was old enough to gain her champion title with her 17th CC.”Lilly” is by CH Miletree Constellation and out of CH Longbody's Classic CC Candidate.

Lilly and the cake-impression of her

We were so happy to share and celebrate this moment with our fellow exhibitors and friends. A bottle or two was popped and'Lilly' had her own special cake. Best Opposite Sex, CC and CACIB went to her halfbrother 'Freddie',Cava Choice Fortune Cookie who is owned by Birgitte Borlund Blindbæk. This was his second CC.

REESE GETS HONOURED

Schultz
The manager at the Hospice unit of Mercy Hospital, Hot Springs Arkansas said some patients come into the unit, angry or unwilling to communicate with staff. The staff then calls on volunteer Mary Schultze and her Cavalier Reese, a 6-year-old Cavalier with a tricolour coat and two huge brown eyes that express empathy and love.

“While they may not want to talk to us, you can find out a lot by listening as they talk to the dog. Even if a patient has not been connected with an animal for a long time, there is a basic emotional bond with a dog. It seems to take them back to some basic time in their life, such as childhood,” she said. “If we are having a hard time collecting a history or other information from a patient, we have sometimes found it is easier if Mary and Reese do it. During visits by a therapy dog, patients are calmer and breathing comes easier, and their heart rates become more regular."

Reese, who has been a certified therapy dog since he was 14 months old, and Mary were honoured recently with lunch and a short ceremony celebrating more than 100 visits to the hospice. Hospital officials presented Mary with a plaque and a picture book of photographs from many of Reese’s visits to the hospice. The pictures featured times when the spaniel came to the hospice in costume. Just the week before, the dog wore Harley Davidson biker gear. Other times, Reese has visited the hospice decked out as an Arkansas Razorback fan, and around Christmas, he will wear his own Santa suit. During the ceremony, Reese, who is also a show dog — both in the show ring and in obedience competitions, received a supply of his special dog treats and a raincoat.

THE NORTHERN (HI) LIGHTS

Badge

Dave Sedgbeer (Russmic) judged the Northern Cavalier Open show held in North Yorkshire on 16th November where he drew a super entry of 116 Cavaliers. During the lunch break Roxanne Hobbs (Beaconsfylde) judged the three Special Awards Classes (PUPPY, GRADUATE & OPEN) which provides the opportunity for up and coming judges to progress by judging some of the dogs already at the show. In this age of ever decreasing entries it is becoming more and more difficult for judges to get the experience and numbers at All Breed Open shows allowing them to fulfill the criteria required to further their judging career. This is a great way of acheiving that. Roxanne had 8 in Puppy, 14 in Graduate and 9 in Open. Some photos of the winners taken by Sarah Maddison.

The Eurodog showin Kortrijk in Belgium Inbf is well situated in Europe to attract exhibitors from France, Netherlands and Germany and of course Belgium but this year it was able to boast that 34 countries were represented and 6,000+ dogs were shown over the 2 days 16th/17th November. I saw a busload of dogs and their owners from as far afield as Russia, such is the popularity of the show The panel of 58 judges came from 19 countries and as the Society were celebrating their 50th Anniversary show this year there was twice the number of normal CACs/CACIBs on offer. I see from the catalogue that 253 UK dogs made the trip.... the Pet Passport scheme obviously being put to good use. Mark Sedgwick and I judged the Cavaliers and the handsome entry of 140 over the 2 days was very satisfying, as they normally get about 50 each day. We decided that the easiest form of travel was by train so I got on at Newcastle and the 3 hour journey to London Kings Cross passed quickly. A short walk to St Pancras International station where I met up with Mark and Aum and we boarded the Eurostar headed for Lille. The journey only took 1 hour 20 minutes and moving at 186 mph you can understand why! In that short time we were served a light meal and wine. Nice, if somewhat nouvelle cuisine for my taste. A taxi then ferried us the half hour trip from Lille in France across the border to our Kennedy Hotel in Kortrijk in Belgium, set a stones throw away from the show venue, the Expo Centre which is a bit like the NEC. As Mark was judging on the first day I took myself off to Bruges with Raf and Christophe who generously showed me the sights. It was a delightful chocoholic day!

Saturday evening was the Banquet and Mark and I managed not to talk about who had won what, so I was able to go to judge on the Sunday without any preconceived ideas. Sunday judging started at 10.am and it was a surprise to discover no critiques were required. Each dog however still received a grade Excellent, Very Good, Good etc. IMG_8393 The Cavaliers were judged in colours with dog and bitch classes Baby, Puppy, Junior, Intermediate, Open, Champion and Veteran. From the winners of each class a CAC/RCAC was chosen and after going through all the colours, the four CAC winners in dogs and the same for the four CAC bitches competed for the CACIB given to the best dog and best bitch from all the four colours. The two CACIB winners were then compared and a BEST OF BREED was picked. Mark and I agreed on the majority of winners with only slight adjustments when a dog was only presented for the one of the days, not two.

CAVALIER SHOW IN THE MIDLANDS

  ,,

The last Club show of the year, held at the Kennel Club Building in Stonleigh, is the Midland Cavalier Clubwhich covers the Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire areas. It turned out to be a beautiful, crisp, bright day for late November and the wintery feel that usually accompanies this show was missing and no one was complaining. It was so nice to be minus the fog, rain, snow! Judges were Linda Flynn (Linjato) doing bitches and Nicky Firth (Firnick) doing dogs. The entry was over 300, and with 26 in Minor Puppy dog and 23 in Minor Puppy bitch things seemed almost like it used to be instead of the penny numbers in classes we saw earlier in the year. The reason...?? combination of the judges, central location, one of the last chances to qualify for Crufts 2014, christmas spirit. Whatever it was that drew people out, was most welcome and the atmosphere was buoyant. Here are some photos from the day.

DovElaine Berwick and Janet Waller!

It was a smashing show and the only unenthusiastic comment heard was "where are the Mince Pies and Sherry?".  Every year the Club has kindly provided Xmas refreshments but it seems decided, due to excess left in previous years, to abandon this perk. From all accounts, they were sorely missed by the masses! Maybe the Club will reinstate this generous and most welcome tradition. I hope so...if you werent successful in the ring you always had the mince pies and sherry as a consolation!

PDSA

The People's Dispensary For Sick Animals is a veterinary charity in the UK. It was founded in 1917 to provide care for sick and injured animals of the poor and is the UK's leading veterinary charity, carrying out more than one million free veterinary consultations a year.

Flo Sinclair reminds us that we can all help fund raise for this worthwhile cause by recycling the stamps that we get on our letters and at this time of year, Xmas cards. 327896844_dog

"As usual I am collecting and saving all the stamps from the envelopes the Christmas Cards arrive in and take them round to the PDSA. so that they can turn them into much needed funds to treat the animals of people who cannot afford to pay for vets. They are a registered charity, who make no charges, depending on donations from pet owners and others to meet their expenses. 6a010535952948970b017c34103c09970b-400wi They treated Hattie after the Pit Bull attack without charge because she was admitted as an emergency, so I found out from bitter experience what devoted care their staff give to all the animals who come to them in need.
I am asking if everyone could save their stamps so that they can take or send them on to their local clinic or PDSA Animal Hospital to help fund their work.  If anyone would like to help in this way and does not have a branch of the PDSA in their area, could they pop their collection of stamps, however few or many, into an envelope and send them on to me and I will be only too happy to hand them in together with my own. A couple of people from abroad did this last year, which the receptionist told me was deeply appreciated. Over recent years people have been so kind, sending in whole collections of specialised stamps, donated both from the UK and several other countries around the world. I am happy to receive stamps not only from the UK, but from abroad too. There is no time limit to sending in the stamps, which I can deliver to my local animal hospital at any time of the year." So if you would like to help with this Flo's contact address is Flo Sinclair. 35 Anita Grove. Erdington Birmingham. B23 7NU

Your old mobile phones, inkjet cartridges, foreign coins are also welcomed by the PDSA.

PDSA receives between £5.00 - £30.00 depending on the phone model.

PDSA receives £1 for every used inkjet cartridge

PDSA receives around £6 per kilo for used stamps.

 'MISS CHIEF',SADLY MISS'D

Black-ribbon-1154699-m
Some Cavaliers, such as Caption, Alberto, Lucasta etc are memorable and their names are instantly recognisable even without their affix. 'Miss Chief' was such a Cavalier. AKC, CKCSC USA & UK Champion Timsar Miss Chief was born on 4th August 2000 by Linjato Ace of Base out of Timsar Lucasta and sadly passed away this week, in her 14th year.

 Molly3a[1]

Annette Jones, her breeder owner, writes......"Mollie" was I think my once in a life time dog. She was from a litter of three bitches – Miss Chief, Miss Fortune and Miss Damina  I didn’t think she was in any way special when she was born and in fact when friends Char and Lamont Yoder would ask about the litter I would just say “Oh they are quite nice!”  We have laughed many times about that since.

Her show debut was delayed somewhat by the Foot and Mouth epidemic so her first show was at a rather damp Scottish Kennel Club in May 2001 where I had to do a crash course in training her to “stand” on the grooming table (minor details like training of the Timsar puppies is usually done at their first show!) – she was placed second. Next came the Humberside Club show which she thought was fun, but wasn’t placed. The following week was Three Counties All Breeds Championship show – Judge, Norma Inglis (Craigowl) By this time 'Miss Mollie' had got her act together – as far as she was concerned all those people sitting ringside in the sun ring were there just to see her – blow the rest!! She stood four square and her tail never stopped wagging I was there merely to hold the lead!  She won the puppy class  - I thought “great she’s qualified for Crufts” Never in my wildest imaginings did I ever think she would win the CC, go Best of Breed courtesy of co judge Sandra Ireland (Charnell) win the Toy puppy group under Geoffrey Davies and go back to the show two days later and win Best Puppy in Show under the world re-knowned judge Ellis Hulme, now departed.
I showed her for 19 months during which time she won 7 CCs and 7 Res CCs. She went Best in show at the Northern CKCS Society on her first birthday – Diane Whitfield judged bitches and the late Michael Boothroyd was the referee and also Best In Show at South & West Wales – the late Geoffrey Porter judged the bitches.  She then retired to nursery duties and had two litters. Mated to Pascavale Enchanted she produced Timsar Master of Ceremonies and to Maibee Montrose – Timsar Mister Moonlighter.
Close friends Char and Lamont Yoder in the USA took over then and the spoiling began! The initial idea was that Char should get her fit again (she was fat after nursing the Moonlighter litter!) and then for them to have a litter from her the following year. The plan changed and Char showed her to her Championship “old club “ and AKC – Could the planned litter be delayed so she could go to the the ACKCSC National?  – see below....another bit of her history was created!

I had the priviledge of judging the ACKCS National Specialty in 2006 in Georgia and in a star studded entry I found CH TIMSAR MISS CHIEF, 'Mollie', still filled my eye. In the row upon row of Specials lined up for my assessment she still had that extra factor. At 6 years old she looked in amazing condition and showed like the star she was and took a well deserved Best of Breed. It was lovely to see her again and in years to come, on the rare occasions I saw her, she always had a warm welcome for me. Such was her character....so Cavalier. She was very special and I dearly wished she had been mine. RIP 'MOLLIE', you were beautiful.....Norma

......gone to be with his Mum....
Gilbert (1)

Black-ribbon-1154699-mIt must have been so hard and emotionally draining that on the day following 'Mollie's' loss, Annette also had to say good bye to her son, Timsar Master of Ceremonieswho underwent two operations to remove some towelling from his stomach and small intestine. Sadly, he did not make it. The picture taken above was in 2011 when at 7 years of age, he came out of retirement, and shown by Sylvia Lymer, he went Best of Breed and ultimately Best in Show at the Three Counties Peke and Cavalier Show under Gordon Inglis.Later that year, under Elaine Lessig at the Midland CKCS Championship show he also was awarded aReserve CC from the Veteran class.

What a wrench to lose two such precious companions in such a short spell. Our thoughts are with Annette at this time.

At LKA, the last General Championship show 2013 in the UK, there were loads of people dressed in 'onesies' collecting money for charity. The Cavalier people doing this were Elaine Williams, Melissa Phillips and Helen and Lorraine Long. "We are pleased to tell you that we raised £109.41 at in aid of Cancer Research. This was collected around the CKCS ring from exhibitors, spectators and the judge Stephen Bardwell and stewards and adds to that collected online already on Justgiving.com. We would like to thank all those who contributed to this worthy cause" Elaine Williams, Melissa Phillips, Helen and Lorraine Long.

A CHRISTMAS 'CAROL' FOR TONY BOOTH

2336641043

Actor Tony Booth, father of Cherie Blair and so father in law to former Prime Minister Tony Blair, is best known for his role in the BBC series Till Death Us Do Part. He and his wife Steph have recently adopted a Cavalier who they have festively named Carol.

Alexa’s Animals Dog Rescue, a Northumberland volunteer organisation, had been looking after 'Carol', thought to be aged around eight or nine, after she was found tied to a lamppost. When he heard the story about 'Carol', Tony, who was a bit damp around the eyes, said, ‘We’ll have her’. She is settling in well at her new home and joins the couple’s other two dogs, a Jack Russell and a Springer Spaniel.

Champion Harana Alfie Boe

Champion Harana Cilla BlackHU

Breaking Records and Making History

from lucy koster (HARANA CAVALIERS)

I was looking for a nice black and tan boy to use on my lovely ruby girl 'Grace Kelly' who had lovely breeding, was a gorgeous type….just a little ‘up to size’. I needed something small & neat with good bone & substance but was 'pretty' in a masculine way’.

I had seen a couple of puppies in the ring by Downsbank Benedictine that I liked, so after asking around and looking at his pedigree, figured he might compliment 'Grace'well.

Ruth Mochrie kindly allowed me to use him and the mating was done. On 27th Oct 2010, 'Grace'delivered 6 very healthy, lively puppies. 2 black and tan boys, 3 black and tan girls and a ruby girl. They were so alike - peas in a pod - so I put coloured collars on to differentiate between them, and to make it easier to monitor their progress.

Alfie & Cilla - newborn

Right from the word go, I had a feeling this was a rather special litter, . They were no trouble at all……. gaining weight daily, and just generally being wholly content. I particularly liked the look of both the boys and one of the black and tan girls. The boy I preferred was Mr Red collar and the girl was the only black and tan without a collar.

These two were kept back, as well as the other boy who eventually went to the US where he is excelling at Obedience and Heelwork to Music. One of the other girls – Miss Pink collar, went to Sheena & Diana Maclaine on terms and is the mother of my new black and tan boy, ‘Bruno Marrs’. I wish I could have kept them all for a while…..they really were a lovely litter.

As our names usually follow ‘musical’ themes I decided to call the boy I kept'Alfie Boe'. I am mad on Les Miserables, and Alfie had just appeared in the fantastic 25th Anniversary concert.'Cilla Black' was a name I’d always wanted to use, but had waited for a reasonable time, out of respect to the lovely Ch Mossdown Cilla Black, a bitch I had much admired in her time.

They made their debut in 2011 at WELKS under Kirstie McFarlane and 'Alfie' won 2nd in a strong Minor Puppy Dog class, with 'Cilla' being short-listed in an equally strong Minor Puppy Bitch class. 'Cilla' was then held back for a couple of months to ‘grow up a bit’. 'Alfie' was consistently placed in his puppy career, finally breaking his duck and winning his last Minor Puppy class at Leeds, quickly followed by Best Puppy Dog at Paignton & Best Puppy In Breed at Welsh Kennel Club. In only 8 championship shows attended in 2011, Cilla won at Border Union, East of England - along with Best Puppy Bitch at the Northern Cavalier and Midland Cavalier Club champ shows.

However….the Best was yet to come! Not in a million years, did I ever dream that 2013 would turn out as it did……

Both started the year well….'Cilla' winning the Res CC at Manchester, and 'Alfie' the Res CC at West of England. Then came the CKCS Club show. I have to admit, one of my remaining goals in dog showing has been to win BIS at the Club show….and that dream came true!

Not only did 'Alfie' win his 1st CC and BIS from an entry of over 400 cavaliers, but'Cilla' won the Res CC too. That was the start of what I can only describe as a spectacular run for both of them.
'Alfie'won his 2nd and 3rd CC’s in quick succession, gaining his crown at the Southern Cavalier Club Show.'Cilla' won her first CC with Best of Breed at WELKS, and her crowning CC at Blackpool, making them our 10th& 11th Champions in the breed.

In all, between them in 2013, they have won 15 CC’s & 8 RCC’s. Both have been Best of Breed 4 times, short listed in a number of Toy Groups and did the double twice at the Humberside Club Champ show and Blackpool respectively. They both broke the record for the amount of CC’s won by a Black and Tan a record that had stood since 1948– and 'Alfie' is now the Top winning Wholecolour male in the History of the Breed.

Towards the end of the year, it seemed that'Cilla' was going to take the title of Top Cavalier and Top Black and Tanin the 2013 CKCS Club Points Annual Trophies, but by winning the CC at LKA and with 'Cilla' being placed 4th in her class, 'Alfie' snatched the title from his sister by 4 points! This makes him the FIRST WHOLECOLOUR in history to win this accolade….with'Cilla' taking Top Bitch and only being beaten for the Individual Trophyby her brother. RD

It is lovely too, that their mother Harana Grace Kelly has been named Top Brood Bitch for 2013.

I cannot begin to express just how proud I am of these 2 very special dogs. I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in their amazingly successful show careers, To all the judges who have rewarded them, to my true friends who have supported me and cheered me on at every point of the journey….and of course to my Mum for everything she does – even to her expert handling when needed.

WHAT'S IN A NAME

GI_136318_bella_pr_1Pets Best Insurance Services a leading USA pet insurance agency, has released its list of the top 10 most popular names for dogs enrolled with the agency in 2013.

Each year, pop culture tends to have a considerable impact on the names people select for their pets. Illustrating this trend, Bella was the No. 1 nameamong dogs insured by Pets Best. The increased popularity of the name Bella can be attributed to the well-known main character of the “Twilight” book and movie series.

While Lucy took the No. 2 spot for canines, other favourites in 2013 included classic dog names that remain popular throughout the years, such as Max, Buddy, Molly and Charlie. Although Bailey was the fourth most popular name in 2012, it slid to tenth place in 2013.

BARNEY HAS NO PROBLEM OVERCOMING THE OBSTACLES

  4162280396

Hayley Telling and her Cavalier Barney were jumping for joy after it was announced they were included in the England squad which will be competing in this year’s World Agility Open Championships, in Italy.

The duo have quickly made a name for themselves competing in – and winning – countless local and national agility competitions. But this is their first international competition.

Hayley from Rustington, West Sussex said: “Barney has achieved so much in his short time competing in agility. I am totally over the moon to have been selected to compete as part of team England.I think it is going to be an amazing experience for both of us and we are going to learn so much in our first international competition.”

"To prepare for the championships we will both need to keep very fit. For Barney this means lots of walks, hydrotherapy, strength exercises in his own little doggy gym at home, as well as seeing his physiotherapist to make sure he is as fit as possible. For me it means lots of running so I am able to sprint to keep up with Barney!”

Spaniel Gentle/Comforter Spaniel

  Story

A funeral home in Arizona has brought in a Cavalier therapy dog to help families through the mourning process.

Two year old Mollie is training for certification that includes learning obedience commands and overcoming any fear of objects she may encounter such as hospital equipment. Her training also includes the recognition of grief and how to comfort people.  It is thought that the idea of therapy dogs started in World War II as a way of lifting the spirits of troops and the wounded. It was Dr. Mayo of Mayo Clinic fame who saw how a visiting soldier's dog lifted spirits and actually promoted the healing process among the wounded. Dogs have helped people with Alzheimer’s, cancer and people recovering from surgery. They have helped children with learning disabilities or autism. Therapy dogs have even been used in
dentist offices to help patients that are afraid of the dentist chair.

The Funeral home states "With this concept, we have brought a therapy dog into the funeral home. If there ever was a place to promote healing, this is it. We are the first in our area to offer this type of care to our families. The best medicine always wags its tail."

Those of us who live with Cavaliers know how well they play the role as comforters....it comes so naturally, as history shows

HOW "ART" THOU?

Portrait of Ginevra Aldrovandi's whose husband, the Bolognese senator Ercole Hercolani, died in 1593. Her elaborate mourning costume-with costly brocade, lace, and pearls-indicates her high social status. She holds a handkerchief, suggesting the tears she shed at her husband's death. The lapdog is her pet, but it also carries symbolic significance. During the 16th century, a widow who did not re-marry, staying faithful to her husband's memory, was often compared to a dog that was faithful to its master.

Curt Bucy from Nashville has passed away after a sudden illness. !cid_9B8AE7688ACD463B8918F9B6CD69A420@craigowlPCAlthough Curt was fairly new to the world of Cavaliers, because of his likeability he very quickly made lots of friends both in the States and in the UK. A kind and gentle man with a lovely sense of humour.
He was enjoying his time at shows and the success that was coming his way. Taken too soon. Our sympathy goes out to Clayton and the rest of his family and close friends. He will be missed.

ART EXHIBITION.....from Dennis Homes (Leogem)

The Kennel Club was formed 140 years ago and during that time it hasamassed quite a lot of dog paintings and other works of art such as figurines, engravings, trophies and all kinds of canine memorabilia. Those of you that have visited their Clarges Street office in London would no doubt have noticed the sheer number of paintings in various rooms and offices and also on the walls of the staircase. Just over ten years ago they opened their art gallery on the ground floor where many of their most noted pieces could be permanently displayed. Here you can see works by some of the world’s greatest dog artists such as Maud Earl, George Earl, Richard Ansdell, Arthur Wardle and Cecil Aldin. They have also staged quite a number of dog art exhibitions over the years including The Golden Retriever in Art, The Fox Terrier in Art, Royal Dogs, Dogs in War plus several Christmas Art Fairs when artists can exhibit works for sale. Their most recent exhibition was devoted to The Newfoundland and ran from last August up until 10th January and included several paintings by Sir Edwin Landseer. From 3rd February until 10th June they will be staging an exhibition devoted to The Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Of very special interest to all Cavaliers owners will be The Toy Spaniel Exhibition which will run from 14th July until January 2015. This exhibition will feature paintings, various art objects and some rare photographs of King Charles Spaniels and Cavaliers, tracing the history and development of both breeds in works of art. The exhibition is being organized by Dr Andreas Schemeland Tina and I will be assisting him in what we hope will be a very interesting and informative exhibition and a ‘must visit’ attraction for lovers of both King Charles Spaniels and Cavaliers. We will be giving more information and further updates in 'Chatterbox' nearer the time.

HO HO HUMBERSIDE

The Humberside Cavalier Club held their Open show near Doncaster on 2nd February 2014 with Cherrill Deans (Clockpelters) judging the entry of 79 and Paula Higgins (Chesalatina) doing the special Jean and John Grant Memorial Stakes classes. Somehow the mix of this show is just right and so results in a very convivial event. The Committee are hardworking and sociable and do their best to ensure everyone has a good time, win or lose. Bacon rolls to welcome everyone and then a delicious free lunch of homemade meat and potato pie (or Quiche) followed by trifle was a great touch and it got better when afternooon tea with cake, carrot or chocolate, was provided. The Miners Welfare Hall in Bircotes is easy to get to from the A1 and parking is just outside the hall. Lighting and ring sizes are good with enough space for travelling boxes etc. The atmosphere was jolly and Sue Leach's birthday celebration meant we could get even jollier! All in all, I never heard one moan the whole day. Well done to the organisers who make this possible. A show well worth attending. Northern hospitality is alive and well! Here are some candid shots and also some of Cherrill's winners.

The world of dogs lost one of it's characters  when John Fothergillpassed away peacefully. John was a fountain of knowledge in the dog fancy and was well liked and known for his generous and kind ways. He spent most of his life in South Wales where he was a regular at the shows. He was a Championship judge in Cavaliers and King Charles, as well as other Breeds, and enjoyed stewarding at many of the shows where he excelled in the task. Extremely polite and proper and old school, it took ages to get him to call me Norma instead of Mrs Inglis. I know he will be sorely missed by his family and friends and our condolences to them and in particular Brian and Kevin (Ricksbury Cavaliers) who had a very close friendship with John. RIP and so glad to have had the pleasure of knowing you, John

Here are some of John's credentials. (not upto date) John Fothergill attended his first dog show and handled a Standard Smooth  Dachshund (black/tan) in Bangalore, South India in 1942. His first major dog show in the UK was Richmond in 1948 where he handled a Bull Terrier. He owned his first Brussels Griffon in 1951 (prefix Berleygill); has worked for a veterinary surgeon; then Glen Kennels (Cairns and Scottish Terriers, Cocker and Clumber Spaniels) also a boarding kennel. In the early '50's he was involved with Crawleycrow Welsh Corgis (Pembroke and Cardigan). He is a retired member, personnel officer and Life Member as well as member and/or officer of many breed and all-breed clubs. He judged his first dog show in January 1960; first Championship show in 1964 (Griffons), 1976 (Pembrokes), 1977 (Cavaliers), 1978 (Cardigans), 1979 (Japanese Chins), 1987 (King Charles Spaniels), 1989 Toy Group, 1995 (Chihuahuas), 1996 (Pekingese). He has also judged breed club shows for the above as well as for Samoyeds, Great Danes, Mastiffs, Tibetan Spaniels, Boxers, Pugs, Pomeranians, Airedales -- nearly 200 shows total, including Crufts in the UK, shows in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Finland, and the U.S. (which he first visited in 1989). He is "interested in every breed" and has a good collection of books on the dog (including Crufts catalogs for over 40 years). He is a weekly correspondent for Dog World on King Charles; also has done the Regional News (South Wales) for 25 years.

22om11funwalk
The Mayor of Bicester, Melanie Magee and her Cavalier 'Hazel', recently joined dog-walkers at the launch of a new fun walk. The event is scheduled for Good Friday and is a three-mile route around Bicester in aid of Medical Detection Dogs, a charity that trains dogs to help people with life-threatening conditions.

Last year after suffering a diabetic hypoglycaemia, where blood sugar levels get dangerously low, the mayor was discovered by one of her spaniels. She said: “When I came round I was drowsy, but managed to get myself some lucozade.” She has backed the charity since last May “I just think it is amazing. The cancer detection work they do is very worthwhile.”

DO OUR DOGS' MEMORIES FADE?

HH

Two dogs were adopted from Rescue where both had a bad time in their previous lives. The older dog, a Cocker with only one ear, was beaten and abused and the other, a Cavalier was rescued from a puppy mill where she spent the first three years of her life locked away in a cage. Today, both these dogs have become two of the most loving dogs. So the question is.... Do dogs, such as these two, remember their pasts, or do the memories fade?

Animal lover and experienced pet owner Marc Marrone suggests.."Only the dogs know what they remember from their past, and it sounds as if these two are having too good a life to waste time and energy on that. We do know that animals do not dwell on the past, nor do they dread or even think about the future. They have no hopes or aspirations and just live for the moment. However, past experiences good and bad do shape an animal's behavior. If an event occurred in the animal's past that hurt it and the event happens again, the animal will remember this situation and react accordingly but it seems that whatever bad things happened have not repeated, and that is why they are so happy and seemingly unaware of how awful their past was".

THE "FLOWERS" OF SCOTLAND AT ALVA

THI

SCKCS

The Scottish CKCS Club Spring Open show has the prettiest setting...the small town of Alva at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Clackmannanshire.

Fromsouth-450

This year's judge Wilma Morrison (Bowerswell) had drawn an entry of approx 90 and had kindly donated embroidered towels as prizes for the major winners. The Scottish Club shows are all very welcoming and sociable and as well as being run competently by the Committee they manage successfully to generate a warm informality that blends the showing side with a social gathering. Here are some of my photos from the day.

HOW "ART" THOU?

 !cid_image002_jpg@01CE2D3F

An etching known as “Prince Charles aka Bonnie Prince Charlie”, by the great English engraver Herbert Thomas Dicksee RE (1862 – 1942)  this was published by the Fine Arts Society in 1902 and is signed and titled in pencil by the artist. It measures approximately 7½ x 9½ inches. It is believed that perhaps the artists owned a Toy Spaniel known as "Prince Charles". with the HAMSHERE GALLERY.

ANYONE KNOW OF THIS AMERICAN KENNEL "VAN DYCK"  and MRS ALLERTON?

Kkk

Vanessa Weber (Kenjockety Cavaliers)who lives in Connecticut bought this curious kennel pamphlet in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1994 from a Vermont antique dealer.  Vanessa writes"I've often wondered if this little pamphlet or the lady who wrote it - in 1902 - wasn't the inspriration for Roswell Eldridge in 1924. Maybe they knew each other? "

"LORPHIL" LORRAINE IN WALLOON LAND

Saturday 25th January 2014 saw me at Newcastle airport waiting for the first of two flights to Brussels, via Amsterdam. Due to wet and windy conditions out of Amsterdam, flights were delayed by about 30 mins. As I had a window seat on this flight I was able to see, close up at least five planes waiting their turn in a queue ready for take off. A taxi awaited me when I landed and the driver appeared to drive as though he was in a Grand Prix, fast and furious.

My two nights stay at the Best Western hotel were very comfortable with very accommodating staff serving fulfilling breakfast before leaving for the International Championship show at MouscronMOUS
where I was to judge the  Cavaliers, King Charles Spaniels and Pekingese.

I would like to extend my thanks to Andre Dumullier, club Secretary, for inviting me to judge and to the exhibitors for bringingtheir dogs.Special thanks to Arnold Jacques who was the perfect steward and Marc Degeeter for attending to all the ring paperwork.

Bb

Judging began prompt 10.00am with Cavaliers. This show was held under FCI rules and as such each colour in both Cavaliers and King Charles Spaniels are judged separately and those awarded an Excellent grade in each colour / sex can be given the CAC.

In my opinion there was greater strength in the particolours, particularly the tricolours, than in the wholecolours. Below are a couple of winning wholecolours

Bbbbb

Moving on to the particolours, beginning with the blenheims

Fffff

A 21 month old blenheim male, again of excellent breed type, PASCAVALE DECLAN, bred in England by  Mark Sedgwick and Michael Levy and owned by Anika Stahl, won the CAC from the Intermediate Class. A richly marked boy, with a gorgeous head and gentle expression; he has a good reach of neck and shoulder placement, level topline and well set  tail, very good spring of rib for his age.

In older blenheim males I was very impressed with two particular boys, finding plenty to like against the breed standard and a difficult decision to separate them. These were MAIBEE CRAWFORD,litter brother to the well known winning English tricolour Maibee McVitie and a glorious, richly coloured boy bred in France by Roger Madec. This was the dog that I could easily have brought home with me, had his owner agreed. GENTLE GUY DE LA GEODE sired by Ch. Angel’s Pride Gentleman who himself is sired by multi CC winning Ch. Maibee Make Believe bred by the late Shealagh Waters.

 Kkkkk

In the photo above you can see the best of the Junior bitches. The winner a most attractive well marked bitch, sound as they come on the move and of excellent breed type. She is INSTANT MAGIQUE DES CAVALIERS DE CECVAN,bred in France by Mme Claudie Cecchet & sired by Bonitos Campaneros Wimbledon.  This bitch was the first of three bitches from Mme Cecchet’s kennel that impressed me.

Oooooo

Credit must be given to the owner of the best blenheim Veteran, TARA DES MARAIS DE BREMES,at 11 1/2 years young she was of lovely breed type, with a silky, well marked coat and long, well feathered ears. She moved elegantly around the ring.

The majority of the tricolours were of an excellent breed type, absolutely correct for size with correctly arched neck and well laid back shoulders, level toplines and very well set and carried tails. The temperaments were exactly as I would want to find — gay,  friendly with ever wagging tails.

From Left to Right, in the photo below, is the tricolour Junior bitch winner and  BEST OF BREED.....ICONE DE MODE DES CAVALIERS DE CECVAN & the CACIB winners, the tricolour dog and blenheim bitch

Oooo

Although under FCI rules the Juniors cannot win a CAC or CACIB, they can compete for BOB and this lightly marked girl sent goose bumps down my spine. I would have happily given her a CC and brought her home.

HOW "ART" THOU?

!cid_image002_png@01CF3186

"Lady and Spaniels"etching and stipple on chine collé by Thomas Landseer ARA (1795-1880). It was published in 1841 and is a portrait of Miss Ellen Power, niece of Lady Blessington. The original picture was painted for Robert Vernon ("an art patron, collector, and public benefactor")  and was presented to His Majesty The King of the Belgians by H.R.H. Prince Consort. approximately 18½ x 22 inches...with the Hamshere Gallery.

Ellen (‘Nelly’) Power (b. c.1817) was the niece of Lady Blessington. With her elder sister Marguerite she lived with Lady Blessington and with Alfred, comte d’Orsay. Landseer was a frequent visitor and is said to have proposed to Nelly. On 13 March 1840 he wrote to d’Orsay, telling him that he had got into a ‘scrape’ with Queen Victoria for staying away from Buckingham Palace to draw Miss Power.

the engraving is approximately 18½ x 22 inches...with the Hamshere Gallery.

WESTWARD HO...

The West of England Cavalier Club Ch Show, held in February in Weston Super Mare, is the 1st Cavalier specialty show in the UK calendar. The West Country had recently taken the brunt of the excessive rain and dreadful floodings that the UK had been experiencing but the weekend of the show saw a dry, bright day with even a hint of sunshine. The venue is situated quite far West so the entry was made up of mainly Midland, South East, South West and Welsh exhibitors with a smattering of people from further North. Distance and cost plays a major factor in entering shows these days and the far flung shows such as those in Wales, Scotland and the more extreme parts of England can see their entries smaller than the more well situated show venues. Frank Kane, a well known "All Rounder" and one of the "voices of Crufts" judged Bitches whilst June Hazeltine (Juzandia Cavaliers) did the Dogs. There were 189 Cavaliers entered and during the lunch break Debbie Coole (Jolainey) did the Special Awards  clsasses. Below is a photo of the final line up of winners plus some other fun pics in and outside the ring.

CAITLIN, HER CAVALIER and the

Kkkkkk

Caitlin & Codi

Trudi Coniberefrom Exeter in Devon has nominated her god daughter Caitlin Channon, who is 11 years old, for THE YOUNG KENNEL CLUB OUTSTANDING YOUNG PERSON AWARD 2014. The Shaun McAlpine Outstanding Young Person Award was introduced by the Young Kennel Club to acknowledge the achievements and promote a positive image of young people within the dog world. The Kennel Club wants to recognise and celebrate its young dog enthusiasts and the award is presented annually at Crufts to a young person who has achieved something outstanding within the dog world. Here is her nomination...

"I Nominate Caitlin Channon for the Shaun Mcalpine Award because I feel she is a very hard working young lady, both with her homelife and her life with dogs. Caitlin has had a passion for dogs since the very young age of 18 months , where she would often be found sitting in their beds cuddling them or following them into the garden to play. At the age of 5, she asked if I could teach her how to show dogs, as she would really like to have a go – I told her to come back and ask again when she was 6 years old if she was still interested.  On her 6th birthday she phoned me up and said “ can I start learning now? “ So began Caitlin, the young handler. She started to train with one of my dogs at the weekends – her mum brought a dog to show as well. She started training in October 2008 and entered her first handling competition at Devon County Show in May 2009 where she came 3rd and quailified for Richmond semi finals (something she has done every year since). Next saw Caitlin take over showing her mum’s Cavalier as she could no longer show him due to ill health. Caitlin is currently a young carer for her disabled mum and does this as well as looking after their dogs at home, going to school and showing most weekends. Her Mum has many health issues which mean she needs a lot of help at home with almost all household tasks and on some days, some personal tasks. Caitlin is always willing to help her mum when and where she can. She has worked so hard over the last 5/6 years to be where she is today. In Feb 2012 she was given her own puppy by her parents, a Chihuahua Longcoat named Charlie. He was 5 months old when he came to live with Caitlin and had never had a collar or lead on, so Caitlin began to train him and with lots of patience she had him in the ring showing just 1 month later. Continuing to work hard, in March 2012 she qualified for the YKC handling finals at Crufts  and came 3rd in her group and just one week later she again qualified for Crufts 2014.  Caitlin is also seen at most shows handling for other people. Anything from a Chihuahua or Cavalier to an Ibizan hound or a Norwegian Buhund , and has recently been asked to start handling a Bulldog and some Shetland Sheepdogs. She attends ringcraft training most Wednesday evening where she is very helpful in any way she can be – often being asked by adults if she would just the run their dog for them. She is on the junior Sub committee for Exeter & County Canine Society where she helps at shows setting up , taking down and running many of the events including 2 Open shows a year. Caitlin will also be competing at Crufts 2014 in the YKC ring in the Handling Finals with her Tricolour "Codi" aka Faulklea Secret Obbsession. GOOD LUCK, CAITLIN

The UK Cavalier community has had a few personal losses over recent weeks.

Ccccc

A report from The Eastern Counties Cavalier SocietyEastern"We are sad to report the death of our President Molly Marshall at the age of 98. She was one of the original founders of our Society and had been President since day one. It was in the early seventies when groups of Cavalier exhibitors would regularly hire coaches to travel to long distant dog shows. It was on a return journey from one of these shows that Molly first muted the idea of a club to cater for Cavalier enthusiasts within the Eastern Counties area and an application for the formation of the society was submitted to the Kennel Club in 1974 and after acceptance the first organized event took place in July 1976. She had been involved with the breed since the 1950s and specialised in wholecolours. Probably her most famous dog was Ch. Don Miguel of Kormar, a black and tan born in October 1958 and bred by Mrs K. Plowright. He was sired by one of Molly’s own dogs, a black and tan called Ramon of Kormar out of a tricolour bitch known only as Kathalan. Don Miguel was quite an important wholecolour stud dog in the early sixties and through his breeding Molly managed to produce both solid black Cavaliers and black and whites. She tried several times to get the solid blacks recognised as a colour but this request was rejected by the Cavalier Club. Amice Pitt was complete against the idea of blacks and black and whites being accepted and claimed that they were merely black and tans and tricolours with the tan missing. In the meantime Molly continued with her wholecolour lines and became quite an influential wholecolour breeder in the 1960s

Canvas

Molly seen here with Maryann Hogan at the Eastern Ch show in 2010 when she celebrated her 94th birthday.

Molly was fluent in several languages and during World War II she actually worked for the Secret Service behind enemy lines. As well as Cavaliers she also kept cats and was a successful breeder of rare breed chickens,  having great success exhibiting her poultry at the London Championship Show that used to be held at Alexandra Palace. She was also heavily involved with the Ricardian Society, an organization that aimed to exonerate and promote the life and memory of King Richard III. She would often turn up at our shows wearing a badge featuring a portrait of Richard III. For many years she lived in a cottage with no electric power and kept many of her chickens inside her house. Despite her eccentricities she was a highly intelligent woman with a very wide knowledge of a vast array of subjects.  RIP Molly.

The Funeral will take place at St Peters Church Horningsea, Cambridge, CB25 9JG on Thursday 13th March at 10.00am. Followed by cremation at Cambridge Crematorium at 11.30am and afterwards at Horningsea Villsge Hall. Donations may be made payable to Christian Aid, either to be left at the Service or sent to Richard Stebbings Funeral Directors, Kendal House, Cambridge Rd, Impington, Cambs CB24 9YS (01223 232309).

THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN....part 1

Ckcsbdg

All the UK Cavalier Club shows are popular but the one that seems to attract the biggest entry and the most visitors is the CAVALIER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWheld in the Kennel Club building at Stonleigh Park, Coventry. Saturday 1st March saw approx 420 Cavaliers entered many of whom took the opportunity to attend the Health Clinics as well as exhibiting in the classes and the Parade of Champions. There was lots of things going on in the side lines, raffles, book stall, photography, scores of items to buy.....trollies, leads, cages, drying coats, dog beds,  grooming equiptment, bedding, toys, handpainted bone china, cushion covers, snoods...everything very tempting.

Judging bitches was Kirsty McMurray (Merryoth)who had travelled from Edinburgh along with her mum, Marie McFarlane (Cotterlee) who looked on with pride as Kirstie made her choices. In the dog ring was Lorraine Gillhespy (Lorphil) who hails from Co Durham and has been in the breed for over 30 years and has a vast amount of experience in breeding, judging and showing Cavaliers. Both judges I felt were very watchable and it was good to watch their proficiency and the positive way they took control of their individual rings and making what was sometimes close decisions. During the lunch break 42 Champions (21 males and 21 females) Paraded around the ring. As well as the UK, there were Champions with titles from several other countries. Switzerland, Monaco, Ireland, Sweden, Czech Republic, USA and Canada, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Denmark, France, Portugal, Spain, Luxemburg. What an extravaganza and a feast for the eyes of the spectataors. Every Champion participant received a copy of the latest BOOK OF CHAMPIONS covering the years 2000-2012.001 (2)

32 Veterans (14 dogs and 18 bitches) were entered in the first two classes of the day and it was heartwarming to see them lapping up the attention and applause they received. From these special Cavaliers emerged the oldest one shown on the day...CH WINNIE AT PASCAVALE who was born 17th August 2000 making her just a few months short of her 14th birthday. I hope she enjoyed the £20 Cavalier Chat award that Gordon and I gave as a "special". Well done, Winnie!

Steve does sterling work taking photos of the class and main winners at Ch shpws and I try to get a sense of the ambience by taking "people pics"...between us we hope you can relive the day or wish you had been there! Here is a taster...more to follow...

THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN PART 2...

Kkkkkkk....the social side of dog showing can be a lot of fun. Ivett Zsabo and Hano Zolt made the trip from Hungary to the show and celebrated in style. Together with Klaus Vorderstrasse they threw a small party for making up to UK Champion Bonitos Companeros Imperator. Lots of friends were around to devour the special cake and pink bubbly. Gill Baker's scrumptious lemon drizzle, carrot and other luxury cakes quickly disappeared. It was good seeing people letting their hair down and relaxing.
