 ALEXANDER THE GREAT

!cid_D8A4F4BC-85C5-43F2-A239-BEC4F10B2156@home

Hilary Bartlett (Korolevsky) writes " I was hoping you might give this young man, Alexander McHugh a mention in your next Chatterbox. As you can see he is covered with large rosettes won at the Companion Dog Showthat I manage as part of the annual Ham Fair on the Common.

This year we had Celeb Vet, Marc Abraham judging. He is the Vet on BBC Breakfast and has also appeared with Paul O'Grady. Marc is busy lobbying Parliament to try to pass a law to stop live animals being sold from Pet 10447134_10152580246256081_3932392581694435733_nShops as he knows that most of the puppies are from Puppy Farms. He has also set up a Charity Pupaid and is holding a Fun Dog Show in September in North London.
Marc believes Alexander is a very special boy as he noticed how much rapport he had with the dogs and what a promising handler he was. Alexander attends Ewell Court Training with his mum and has learned ringcraft from Rob Dix and Janet Taylor.

"Alexander, seen here with Marc Abraham,  won Best in Show, Junior Handler and the Veteran Classes.  Also pictured is Lady Annabel Goldsmith who lives locally, supports the Fair and presents the Best In Show awards. She has a number of Rescue dogs and is the mother of Jemima Khan who was married to Imran Khan, the famous Pakastani Cricketer."

"The other pic I am sending, for everybody to have a laugh, is of 2 year old Max, Alexander's little brother, who thought he would like to pretend to be a dog and is being looked at rather questionably by 'Sofia' my Ruby girl."

 HEAR, HEAR

  Tm_hawkes-bay-deaf-cub

Murray Whittington's Cavalier Frodo, provides him with the ring of confidence. Living with a 85 percent hearing loss, the 44-year-old New Zealand man relies on his dog to fill in the gaps.

It's no hit and miss relationship because Frodo is a Hearing Dog, trained at a cost of $NZ 35,000.

When the door bell rings it's Frodo who goes to it, comes back to Murray to gently paw him, then leads him to his guest. Same drill when the timer on the oven or the alarm clock goes off, or when Murray's eight-year-old son, Daniel is sick in bed and needs him. If the smoke alarm is activated Frodo will hit the deck in front of Murray, flat as a pancake, looking directly at the noisy device.

"When he drops flat to the floor that means danger," Murray says, adding that every time Frodo helps him out he is rewarded with an eat-treat. "He will react to any sound he's trained to."

Murray lost an eye and most of his hearing ability to German Measles at birth. "There are certain frequencies I can't hear - and my hearing aids are not always reliable," he says.

Hearing Dogs New Zealand, a not-for-profit organisation, is based in New Plymouth. At its training centre it converts all breeds of dogs, as long as they are friendly, intelligent and responsive to sounds, into Hearing Dogs.

Amber_11months_with_jacket_croppedWhen qualified they wear the yellow 'Hearing Dog' jacket, and are provided free of charge to applicants who meet strict criteria.

Recently Murray, also suffers from diabetes, was rushed to Hawke's Bay Hospital when his blood sugar levels rose alarmingly, leaving him semi-conscious.

While he was in the Intensive Care Unit a friend brought Frodo in to      visit, and Murray was blown away by the reaction of the unit's doctors and nurses. Not only did they love the dog, but many had never heard of a Hearing Dog. When he was moved to a ward for his final two days in hospital, Frodo joined him fulltime.

Under the 1996 Dog Control Act, service dogs (blind/hearing/some other conditions) are allowed to stay with their owners in hospital.

Paprika, a six-year-old Cavalierstands in front of Milo's Kitchen Treat Truck in San Francisco, California.

The San Francisco-based pet treat company have launched the Bay Area’s first mobile food truck for dogs.

“Milo’s Kitchen is all about dogs being an equal part of the family, so we thought if people get to enjoy food trucks, why can’t dogs enjoy a treat truck?” said company spokeswoman Chrissy Trampedach.

The truck is travelling to 16 cities across the country through the end of August, with stops including Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix,Chicago, Detroit and Pittsburg.

In addition to free samples from Milo’s Kitchen product line, the vehicle also travels with a canine-ready photo booth, a lounge with sofas for socializing and plenty of drinking bowls, bones, tennis balls and doggie beds.

The number of dogs living in San Francisco is believed to surpass the number of children, due in large part to the escalating costs of living there. An estimated 120,000 dogs inhabit the city, compared with roughly 110,000 children, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Dennis Homes writes about the Kennel Club Art Exhibition.

"After months of behind the scenes work, the Toy Spaniels Art Exhibition opened at the Kennel Club’s Art Gallery on 14th July. However, the official opening took place two days later on Wednesday 16th July. The gallery was packed with invited guests and waiters bringing around champagne and nibbles. The Kennel Clubs’ Chairman, Professor Steve Dean formally declared the exhibition open and a short speech followed from Valerie Foss and then myself. The Kennel Club’s previous chairman Ronnie Irvine was also present as he has played a big part in promoting art exhibitions here in the past.

Dr Andreas Schemel was first given the task of organising this exhibition and when he approached Tina and myself to join him in this project we jumped at the chance to combine two of our great loves, art and Cavaliers! During the first three months of this year Andreas, Tina and myself began listing lots of possible items to include in the exhibition. In April we had our first meeting at the Kennel Club to go through our lists and decide on which ones to choose. We ended up with around 250 items. Paintings and engravings were to be displayed on the walls of the gallery while sculptures, figurines and ornaments would be displayed in glass cabinets. Small items such as jewellery would be displayed under glass in pull out drawers.

From the outset our aim was to have great diversity in the exhibition. We wanted to show Toy Spaniels depicted in art in many varying styles. Some paintings in the exhibition are over 200 years old but we also have a few that were commissioned just this year. We have oils, watercolour, pastels and engravings. We also have two recent works by the Czech artist and Cavalier owner Libor Kral who produces his work on a computer. Some may question whether this is true art, but there is great skill, imagination and creativity in Libor’s work which ranks him as an artist in much the same way as you would rank a watercolour artist.

As well as all the exhibits in the art gallery there also are a few small items displayed in the adjoining library. These include the first ever challenge certificate won by a Cavalier, Ch Daywell Roger, awarded in 1946. There are also a number of very interesting old photographs included a set that show some of the last toy spaniels that were kept by the Marlborough family at Blenheim Palace in the 1920s. In numerous Cavalier books there are reproductions of paintings that show previous Dukes of Marlborough in elegant surroundings with their spaniels, but here at the exhibition we have a photograph of the 9th Duke relaxing most informally in his lounge with his spaniels at his feet.

Probably our most treasured loan to the exhibition is a small watercolour head study of a tricolour which we do believe is Queen Victoria’s Dash, and this painting has been loaned to the exhibition by The Royal Collection. In other words it is owned by Her Majesty The Queen! So this certainly does give esteemed approval to our exhibition.

The exhibition runs until 9th January 2015 and is open Monday to Friday from 9.30 am until 4.30 pm. The Cavalier Club are organising several guided tours which also includes a tour around the rest of the Kennel Club building plus refreshments. However bookings for these tours are going fast so if you are interested you must check with their website at www.thecavalierclub.co.uk  However, if you wish to visit on your own you need to book in advance by either telephoning the gallery on 020 7518 1064 or emailing at artgallery@thekennelclub.org.uk For those coming from a long distance why not make it a special day trip to London. The Kennel Club building is just off Piccadilly, only a short walk from London’s theatres and all the big stores. If you’re celebrating a birthday or other special event then why not have afternoon tea at the Ritz which is just around the corner from the Kennel Club. For anyone interested in the history of Cavaliers and King Charles Spaniels a visit to this exhibition really is a must.

 FACEBOOK, FERRARIS AND FOUR CAVALIERS

Article-0-1EE7AE9B00000578-446_634x475

A Texas millionaire's dogs are so pampered they've got their own $45 per hour social media consultant churning out their personal blog posts. Article-0-1EE7AEA300000578-548_634x295

Auto recycling tycoon Ron Sturgeon loves his Cavaliers so much he pays for the world to see their thoughts on Facebook, Twitter and a personal blog.

Josh Davis, a Fort Worth tech entrepreneur says 'I spend anywhere from four to eight hours per week managing the dogs’ blog and various networks. Davis has used his expertise to gain a following of 23,000 for the dogs' Facebook page, called Spoiled Cavaliers. Ron has always been passionate about his dogs. He has been involved with the Cavalier Rescue for years'

The lucky dogs may soon get even more media exposure. A show called Goin’ to the Dogs about Sturgeon, his wacky family and, of course his dogs, is currently being pitched to various TV networks.Article-2662012-1EE8277000000578-125_634x354

It's one part reality show and one part competition series as Sturgeon's wife, adopted sons and canine heirs duke it out over the $75 million. For his part, Sturgeon stays mum on who will benefit from his years of sharp business dealings.

221f2d21f6a2a81bbd59483525be98c9Ring side parties, celebrating birthdays, new Champions etc. are becoming a popular part of the UK Cavalier show scene. Personally, I think it is a most enjoyable part of the day and brings in a light, relaxed atmosphere to the proceedings. The majority of the societies have no problem with the merrymaking but whilst it is great fun, we should always make sure the festivities do not interfere in any way with the dogs being exhibited in the ring and the judges' concentration. Have fun,be considerate and the show committees will stay party-friendly! Now where is the next party?

One of the most successful Cavaliers imported into Australia by Margret was the top winning Eng and Aust Gr Ch Lorankas Dream Lover who won approx 40 All Breed BIS including a number of prestigious Royal shows and 6 Cavalier Specialty BIS. Margaret Easson writes  "I have lost a true friend who was there for me in good times and not so good times.  Margret had a distinctive view on life, indeed quirky. She had a delightful and at times wicked sense of humour. She did not suffer fools lightly.  She was most forthright on expounding her views, especially when it came to the Cavaliers. Margret was an icon of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel fancy. As one of the early pioneers she was passionate about this breed and she established her part of its history over the years. It was a privilege to have known Margret, a dear friend and a bright star in the Cavalier Constellation".

Lisa Gamble(Lisgarth) from Wales has lost her lovely Black/Tan veteran...."Our darling boy, "Guinness", unexpectedly embarked on his journey "over the bridge" today. Fbfa631b7c82a7057c033b971c8687c8To say I am devastated just doesnt come close. Although lightly shown, his achievments were significant. He won numerous Championship firsts including the Black and Tan class at the Northern Cavalier Club 4 years running from 2008 - 2011 and was split to the last 4 for the CC on many occasions. In addition, he won a number of BIS at Club Open level and was unbeaten by any other B/T for almost 3 years. As a veteran, he won BVIS 2012, 2013 at the CKCS summer show. 2013 at the West of England, BVIB at LKA 2012 and 1st Veteran Dog at Crufts 2013. Many thanks to all judges concerned and to Lorraine Hughes, his breeder, for allowing me to share my life with him. I'm sure I have missed some significant wins, but this is enough to send him on his way. Sleep tight little man. You were a real character and will be missed."  special boy, Guinness.

Ta-Ra TAYLOR

6a010535952948970b0147e101feea970b-500wi

Maibee Montrose has been a household name in our Cavalier world for a long time and it is so sad that he has now left us. A good age...13 years 7 months, he died peacefullyUre. Although never campaigned in the show ring he produced a string of Champion children, 12 in all, and was Top Stud dog in the UK in the years 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011.  Sired by Craigowl Dixon out of Maibee The Stand In (a Ch Ricksbury Tommy daughter) he passed on so many admirable qualities. One of those dogs you thought would always be there to greet you at Mill Farm in the North East of England. I saw him a few days before he died and it was heart warming to see this old boy enjoying carrying his favourite toy around in his mouth in the kitchen and beware any of the young whipper snapper Cavaliers or Charlies who tried to take it from him! VvvOur condolences to Bill. Many share the grief felt for a dog who touched our lives.  Now reunited with Shealagh who treasured and was extremely proud of this little dog she bred. RIP "Taylor"....one in a million.

DOG WORLD review

The Dog in Art

CHATTERBOX welcomes LATVIA

   Tr

Hello Norma, I would like to tell you the news about the Cavalier community in Latvia.HpmThe first Cavalier, Helandros Piccadillycame to Latvia from Estonia in 2005. Today, 9 years later, our FCI affiliated LKF (Latvian Cynology Federation) is proud to register the 100th Cavalier. Despite being such a small number, but using our neighbour’s experience, on 27 July 2014 we organized a special ring for Cavaliers in the National Dog Show at Adazi.HpThe idea, inspiration and the main organiser was myself, Diana Kontakevica. We were delighted to have Katie Sloan and Iris Soutar from Scotland as judges at our first show.

The total number of Cavaliers was more then 40, both domestic ones and international who came from France, Czech Republic, Germany etc. The most number of dogs from one kennel were 8 from “Cattleya Dowiana”.

The show was divided into two parts: Official classes with expertise and unofficial with different competitions.
The official part was judged by Katie Sloan (Turretbank) and her winners:
Royal Fantasy Frizzante Amore ( Balleta’s Summer Classic x Alicavis Florentine) – Best Dog and Best of Breed
Georgina of Woodville ( Johnny  Be Good Of Woodville x Dona Ruby De Sophline) – Best Bitch and Best of Opposite
Elayna Star Lagiva(Campanards Delicato x Georgina of Woodville) – Best Puppy in Show
Amore Mio Junior Kashmir Jasmine(Prima Quartet Amore Mio x Amazing Wonder Of Magic Noblesse) -  Best Opposite Sex Puppy
Helandros Walk Alone(Crow Hunter Paddington x Helandros Welsh Princess)- Best Veteran

The unofficial classes were given to Iris Soutarwho was invited to choose the  winners of Best Groomed, I love my cavalier – Children competition. Mother and daughter, and the Smart Cavalier.

We hope to continue this event annually and grow from strength to strength. Many thanks to our judges and all the participants. I hope this news will be interesting for Chatterbox! Best regards, Diana Kontakevica from Latvia. Some photos of the day.

Thank you Diana for your report and I am sure our Chatterbox readers will be delighted to hear news from Latvia and the Cavaliers. Please continue to keep us updated with what is happening in your part of the world.

0.EC

Top Twenty Gala

Purpose of this Event:  To recognize those Cavalier who best exemplify the breed

Rosettes:  All exhibitors who have entered the Top Twenty Gala will receive a commemorative rosette etched with their dog’s name.

Prize:  Winner will take home a perpetual trophy of a piece of Cavalier artwork and will receive a small Glicee print of that artwork to keep

Mystery Judges:  The identities of the THREE judges will be kept secret by the Gala Chairs until the evening of the event.

Judges are drawn from three categories. 1.Licensed Cavalier Breeder/Judge. 2. CKCSC, USA Breeder and/or Judge with in depth knowledge of the breed. 3.A licensed all-breed judge, not a breeder or owner of Cavaliers. All must be well-qualified to judge dogs.

Note:  Keep showing your Cavaliers between now and the September show on the West Coast, to make sure they qualify for this top Twenty Gala!

 People’s Choice Award

At the same time as the Top Twenty dogs are being judged, spectators can participate as People’s Choice ringside judges, filling in the ballot provided.  Ballots are tallied at the end of the evening and the winner of the People’s Choice Award will be announced at the banquet on Saturday evening and presented with a prize.

BadgeThe Northern Cavalier show held at the Stafford County showground is a popular one. Many take their caravans and motorhomes and start off their "Cavalier camping" fortnight moving on after the show to Top Barn Farm near Worcester where they congregate and have a holiday with their Cavaliers taking in the accessible shows at Paignton, Bournemouth, Welsh Kennel Club, South and West Wales Open show and then ending with the Cavalier Club Open show held on site. This year the respectable entry at the Northe club show was 274 Cavaliers judged by Ray Waddington (Spindlepoint) and Diane Searle (Stonepit). As well as the exhibiting and judging to enjoy there was the added bonus of several parties to celebrate Nicky Firth's 50th, Beth Rees's 18th and two new Champions...Ch Miletree Montesuma of Londondor and Ch Bentwood Chloe of Forestcreek. Here are a few pictures of the day.

South and West Wales CKCS Clubheld an Open Breed show in conjunction with the Welsh Kennel Club Ch show on 15th August 2014. Cesar Cortes (Londoncor) was the appointed judge and many exhibitors who had entered the Cavalier classes judged by Sheila Hindle (Ellisiana) at WKC stayed on in the late afternoon and "killed 2 birds with 1 stone". The attraction of doing 2 shows in the day at the same venue appealed and there were 100 entries for Cesar who lives in London but hails from Colombia. Here are some pics at the show.

TIP TOP CAVALIERS AT TOP BARN FARM

Top Barn Farm is near Worcester and every year for 2 weeks in August, Cavalier lovers and dogs flock with their tents, caravans and motorhomes and set up home. They gather there for fun and frolics, rain or shine! It is extremely popular and each year sees the number of "glampers" (glamorous camping) increase.  For several years now Ckcsbdgthe CKCS Club have held their Summer Open show at Top Barn Farm at the end of the 2 week spell....and it attracts a super entry.Mat Morse (Matmor)from Melbourne. Australia was this year's appointed judge. He and partner Will were on a lengthy holiday from Australia visiting family and friends and drew a wonderful entry of 184. Join the fun in these pictures...with thanks to Nathalie, Sandra, Wilma and Laura

The coastal route from Newcastle to Edinburgh is spectacular. Crossing into Scotland the views are stunning with rocky cliffs overlooking the North Sea  Indexon one side and tall, rolling hills and grazing sheep on the other. The Scottish Kennel Clubhave two All breeds championship shows per year both held at the Royal Highland Showground and Exhibition centre near Edinburgh.  The Centre hosts, amongst other events, the Royal Highland Show which is Scotland's annual farming and countryside showcaseNuyt

Wilma Sutherland (Ebonleigh) lives near Aberdeen and made the trip to Edinburgh to judge Cavaliers. She must have been so excited and satisfied to see her BOB and BP go onto more success in the Groups and Best In Show rings. Cesar Cortes and his recently crowned Champion MILETREE MONTESUMA OF LONDONnot only won Best of Breedunder Wilma but went on to take the Toy Group and the cherry on top of all dog shows.....BEST IN SHOW under Andrew Brace. It was a great moment captured on video and so good that Ruta Towse (who together with her husband Peter bred "Uno") was there to witness the special moment. Wilma's Best Puppy took the eye of Ernie Paterson who gave Bonitos Companeros Moulin Rouge at Craigowl...Toy Puppy Group 2. A good day for our breed.

MAGIC MOMENTS

10411728_10202789550605444_1482482150326630238_n

Meet 'Magic'...Veronica Hull writes My oldest at the moment is 17 yrs 8 months and 10 days of age. Magic,(Telvara Velvet Touch) was born into my hands on the 20th December 1996, and last year at 17 she took part in the heart research programme fronted by leading cardiologist Professor Simon Swift. She was DNA’d and Dopplered by Simon with the result showing a heart murmur graded ‘between ONE and TWO’. This seemed to surprise the experts but to be honest it didn’t surprise me. Magic is still very agile.... her eye sight, hearing and faculties are razor sharp, and she loves to eat. Her closely ‘line-bred’ pedigree is full long lived Cavaliers, and her son at 13yrs and 8 months is following in his ancestors pawsteps.....
In the photo taken on Sunday, Magic had commandeered the puppies' sofa bed, which needless to say is now HER bed... She requires no medication for any ills and I’m hopeful she will celebrate her 18th Birthday in December. Her close relation, my beloved homebred Sasha so very nearly made it to 18 and like Magic, she never needed meds for anything, but at 17 yrs 11 months and 13 days my sweet Sasha just let out a contented deep sigh, and left us. So we’re keeping everything crossed for my little B/T Princess to become sweet 18, and counting" what an ispirational  girl, Veronica.

GOODBYE, GEORDIE GIRL

!cid_9E2DAE9E-E788-4C88-BA78-2591713DA834Nut

"Today we share the sad news that we lost a very special person - our first Champion, Lochbuie Geordie, just short of 9 years old.  We thought that Geordie must have bad teeth that were troubling her usual piggy eating habits but the vet didn’t feel that they were the problem.  Blood tests revealed a very high white blood cell count and after a course of antibiotics did not improve her appetite we opted for an ultrasound scan of vital organs.  They discovered a hidden lump yesterday and an exploratory op this morning revealed that she had an inoperable tumour that had spread over several vital organs including stomach & pancreas.

For those that knew Geordie from her show days you will know what a big hole she leaves.  Geordie was a true princess – she hated to get her feet wet, would never stand still to be groomed and had to be pinned down to have her toenails cut!  Totally unpredictable in the show ring, she showed her pants off when only she wanted to, yet always stole hearts with her “pick me” attitude.  I know that you will understand how we feel.  The energy that I threw into showing Geordie when my first husband left and my father died, saw me through some dark days and no single Cavalier that I have ever lived with has given so much pleasure and been such a rascal too.

Only last week she was taking part in a follow-up gait study at the Royal Veterinary College where she won the hearts of the vet team.  Geordie was a fabulous ambassador for the breed and there certainly won’t be another one!" Sheena Vella and Diana Maclaine

HOW "ART" THOU?  from the Hamshere Gallery

Etchings by the great English canine artist  Herbert Thomas Dicksee RE, (1862 – 1942) He was a dog lover often seen walking his Bloodhound. The Dandie Dinmont and Pugs in his etching were family dogs, as was the favourite Bull Terrier. The black French Bulldog, ’Shaver’, featured in etchings was the only dog Dicksee ever entered for a dog show. At one show in Olympia, Dicksee walked the dog from Hampstead to the show venue to try to get weight off him before he went in the ring!

“Prince Charles aka Bonnie Prince Charlie” was published by the Fine Arts Society in 1902. It measures approximately 7½ x 9½ inches. Only artists original signed proofs and this is signed and titled in pencil by the artist. It is believed that this is perhaps the artist's own Spaniel also known as "Prince Charles".

"Fire Worshippers" published and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1899. It is approximately 18 x 28 inches.

Rescue and Welfare

After many years as Co-ordinator, Joan Pagan (Sorata) has handed over the reins to Andrea Sedgbeer (Russmic) Thank you, Joan for all you have done.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

We are a registered charity who care for Cavaliers in the United Kingdom. Our Aim is to 'Help the well-being and welfare of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in the UK'

Our Trustees and Committee are all volunteers and as a National organization, we have a network of helpers through out the UK who arrange re homing visits for us. So no matter where a Cavalier needs assistance in re homing we can help.

Taking on one of our welfare dogs is a commitment which, hopefully you have given a lot of thought and careful consideration to. This commitment could be as long as 10 - 12 years. However, your new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will be your wonderful, trusting, loyal companion and a member of your family.

If you would like to apply to join our waiting list then please read the pages on How we Operate and Rehome a Cavalier.

If you are in the situation where you need our help in re homing an existing Cavalier then in the first instance you should contact our Co-Ordinator who can explain how the service works in a confidential manner.

BIRMINGHAM BEAUTIES

The City of Birmingham All Breeds Ch show is located at Stoneleigh Park in the heart of England within a 30 minutes drive of Birmingham, Coventry, Warwick, Leamington Spa and Stratford-upon-Avon. It is a convenient and flexible indoor and outdoor venue and ticks many boxes for a dog show site. However as it covers 3 days, if your breed is held on the Friday it can be a nightmare traffic wise getting there and going home. Unless you live 5 minutes away! Cavaliers had 205 entries, so many were not deterred by the daunting travel facing them. Judges this year were Sheena Maclaine (Pennygown) and Anne Rennard (Deranmar).Champions were the flavour of the day...with two new Cavalier Champions crowned on the day, making 9 Cavaliers gaining their UK titles so far this year. Outside the ring, Anita Godwin laid on a lovely spread to toast her latest Champion Cavaliegh Jacob who was made up in July. She generously shared the refreshments with friends who were happy to help her celebrate. Here are some happy moments from the day...

PRIMA BALLERINA who clearly loved our breed

VreTamara Platonovna Karsavina (10 March 1885 – 26 May 1978) was a Russian prima ballerina renowned for her beauty, who was a Principal Artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet, often paired with Nijinsky. After settling in Britain at Hampstead in London she began teaching ballet professionally and became recognised as one of the founders of modern British ballet. She assisted in the establishment of The Royal Ballet and was a founder member of the Royal Royal Academy of Dance which is now the world's largest dance-teaching organisation.

THE WORLD SHOW Vio

Hi Norma. The Finnish Cavalier Club wanted to continue the tradition of a 'Get Together Party' before the The World Dog Show which was last held in Finland 16 years ago in 1998. This time around there were around 40 people at the party which was hold in Espoo at the lovely home of our Club Chairman Jaakko Lehessaari and his wife Reetta. Cavalier lovers from Australia, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark and of course from Finland attended. The World Dog Show is a very busy time and if you are showing dogs, does not always allow time to sit and speak with people  This way we had time to sit, chat and relax for a while. I think everybody enjoyed the party and had a nice time...from Pauliina Lantta (Gillespie Cavaliers)

MARTIN AND DALLAS....a winning team

from Joanne Hall who lives in Sheffield... "I am so proud of my brother, 38 year old Martin and our dog "Dallas" whose kennel name is Clockpelters The Viceroy.  In 2012 they went to a Companion Dog Show, and at the end of the show there was a class called Dog of the Year 2012and to everyone's delight they won! Martin was thrilled to bits with his best friend Dallas. He was so happy that he held the trophy on his knee all the way home with a very big smile on his face. Then in August 2014, I entered the photo above in a Pet Photo Competition where there were 20 classes. The Class was called - My Proudest Moment with my Dog, whiBuech I thought was just the right class to enter, as it was Martin's proudest moment with his best pal.  They won the class which was fantastic, then went one better by winning....Best In Show and received a beautiful trophy and rosette. Words cannot say how happy we were for them both. Martin is so overjoyed at winning with his pal Dallas and what a team they make. They are so best of friends it will make Martin's day seeing his photo on Chatterbox"    Many congratulations to Martin and Dallas...you do the Breed proud and hope to hear more about your successes.

SCOTTISH/SWEDISH STYLE WEDDING

Indexbtre

Dick and Wilma Morrison (Bowerswell) from Scotland are well known on the dog show scene and have been part of it for over 30 years with their Cavaliers and Beagles. Their daughter Nadine, who has been living in in Sweden for many years got married recently to Jorgen Ronning and the proud parents of the bride travelled over for the wedding. I have known Nadine since she was a toddler. 78295_10151074007471611_435690180_o
Here are some lovely photos of their unique, special day. Nadine writes"We were married on the banks of Grövelsjön, Dalarna by a registrar followed by fun, games and an evening meal at the mountain lodge Grövelsjön Fjällstation. The following night we had a Ceilidh with haggis, neaps n tatties and homemade whisky sauce. Loads of millionaire shortcake, shortbread and tunnocks teacakes. Guests were family and a few close friends"    all the best to the happy couple for their future happiness

DOG FRIENDLY PLACES

Mui

from Alice Scanlon...."What a super idea this is and it would be useful if places which will take more than two dogs could be listed. We have real problems trying to find somewhere for our three. We like to take them with us, mainly because they are all much too old to leave with someone who doesn't know them and understand their funny little ways. We did stay at The Duke of Wellington at Danby North Yorkshire in August and they made us very welcome. The girls were allowed to sleep in our room and they set up a dining area in the bar area for us so that they could be with us whilst we ate. I have looked at many cottages etc which state 'dogs welcome' only to find that the small print will say 1 or 2 well behaved dogs welcome, usually at a charge (sometimes as much as £15 per dog per night) which on top of rental for cottages makes for an expensive holiday.

HOW "ART" THOU?

  !cid_image001_png@01CFD6B7

Joos Vincent De Vos 1829-1875 born in Courtrai, Belgium on the 4th March 1829 and was a pupil of the animal painter Edouard Woutermaertens at the Courtrai Academy. His teacher was a painter in the Belgian Realist tradition and painted a number of dog paintings and this influence is clearly apparent in the work of the pupil. He  became better known than Woutermaertens and he traveled and exhibited in France, Italy, and America as well as his native Belgium.  It is said his animals owe a certain amount to the work of Sir Edwin Landseer, but he often took the depiction of animals in a genre type situation, a step further.

He kept a menagerie of animals in his studio including apes, foxes and even a camel and these appear in many of his paintings. Often on a small scale and nearly always on panel, he produced a large number of circus type situations with monkeys interacting with dogs. His more prosaic dog portraiture is filled with details such as insects, a rich carpet, textured baskets, stone and brickwork. Today his work can be seen in many museums including those at Bruges, Courtrai, (Museum of Fine Arts and the Spreybrouck Collection), Kuume (Depypere Collection), Lille, Mulhouse, Tongres (F de Schaetzen Collection), and Tourgoing.

FOR YOUR COFFEE TABLE

Byre A pictorial history of the range of dog paintings created in 19th-century Europe. While English artists certainly dominated the field, many European artists such as Rosa Bonheur, Alfred de Dreux, Charles Olivier de Penne and Charles van den Eyken produced a range of paintings depicting the dog. Over 50 breeds are depicted in these paintings, from the lap dogs and hunting dogs of the aristocracy to the common shepherds' dogs who were prized for their keen working abilities. Great Britain was the epicentre for dog painting during the 19th century. With the rise of the middle class and an attendant increase in leisure time, the showing of dogs became an important pastime. Owners of show dogs and sporting dogs alike wanted their animals immortalized by the prominent artists of the day. This trend was accelerated with the involvement of Queen Victoria and the precedent of her great fondness for dogs. While the artists' different styles are of interest in themselves, it is the subject matter of these paintings which provides an insight into the similarities and differences between the different dogs of Europe.

UikDriffield Agricultural Society held it's All Breed Championship Dog show Showresize.phpfrom 18th to 21st September at Wetherby Racecourse in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Po There are only 8 (out of 38) Annual Championship shows held in the Northern part of England and Scotland where Cavaliers can compete at this level. So to have Darlington one week and Driffield the next is good news for the Northern and Scottish exhibitors! No getting up at the crack of dawn, or earlier, to travel to the likes of Bournemouth or Builth Wells! Judging Cavaliers was Raye Parry (Gwynsias) from Wales.

Norma,I have advertised a few Cavalier Books on FaceBook for sale and will be adding more plus Year Books. I don't have anyone to hand them down to and think the time has come to have a clear out of loads of dog stuff!!! Anyhow, I also have a lot of pedigrees and when we did the very first Amice Pitt Rally in Scotland I did a 15 generation one, being helped and given snipits of pedigrees from various people. I don't want to just throw them out and wonder if there is anybody who would benefit fromhaving them or is there someone who collects old pedigrees.Jill Swanston email swanston869@btinternet.com

Hi Norma...I've put this on Facebook, but it may be good for Chatterbox?
I am having a clear out and have a lot of Kennel Club Toy Group Breed Records supplements that are free to anyone who would like to pay the postage – or collect from me down here in France! There are the last quarter of 1997, the first of 1999, the  complete year of 1998, third and fourth quarters of 2000, the first of 2001 and complete years of 2002 to 2007, plus the first and second quarter of 2008. There may be some more, but I haven’t yet found them. They are quite heavy, about 175 grams each, and the postage for one to Europe is 4.15€, for two 6.15€ and from three to six 8.80€ and more than six up to twelve, 12.65€.  For the rest of the world it is 5.65€, 7.40€, 10.85€ or six to twelve, 17.00€.Jane Naylor email jasenil@aol.com

SLOVAKIA CAVALIER AND KING CHARLES SPANIEL CLUB

Uvod1b

"I was delighted to be invited to judge this show on 6th September in Tomasov and spend a few days in this intriguing and beautiful country. Miu Our host Edo Stloukal was truly amazing and took care of our every need and we relished spending time with him and visiting some of his favourite places in a country that he is so justifiably proud.

The show was held in an excellent venue, spacious and light. My ring steward was most charming and efficient and impossible to fault and I was ably assisted by two glamorous secretaries. The show ran like clockwork.

It was interesting to see how much influence dogs imported from the UK were beginning to have. My main winning dogs were mostly sired by dogs from well known kennels namely Miletree, Pascavale, Aranel, Volney and Sorata. My BEST IN SHOW.....Ch. Lambert Love Me was sired by Gayhalo Montreal. He also won the progeny class which included some very nice types. Overall it would appear that Cavaliers in Slovakia are on the upgrade. I had noted the the wholecolours had been praised in the past and indeed there was some of quality. Heads in particular without exception were very good and could easily be transferred onto particolours....no extra short muzzles here. The black and tans and rubies were shown in rich colours in full bloom but  they were a little too large or too long for my interpretation of the standard. In the Veteran class were some very long lived dogs who moved around the ring with such enthusiasm and panache.

My Best In Show Ch. Lambert Love Me is a most striking show dog. A tricolour with an abundance of coat in perfect bloom and condition, really raven black with rich tan markings with a sweet head and expression, not easy in the tricolour. He moved with style keeping a level topline and level tail.  Shown in exemplary fashion and extremely well handled. A dog that I feel could win anywhere. The one I really loved was my best puppy Gorgeous Gem Magnolia Passco who it transpired was sired by the BIS . This is a most attractive blenheim boy with not only a head piece that I really admired but was ideally proportioned in height to length ratio. He moved and was handled excellently by his young handler. This one must have a great future. If there are more pups like these then the  Slovakian Cavaliers future looks bright" Michael A Brook (Lillico)

BLESS YOU

There were plenty of barks and licks on Sunday as Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Linwood, New Jersey USA, celebrated a blessing of the animals on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint and friend to all animals. All varieties of dogs waited with their owners for Pastor Reverend Paul Hart to sprinkle each of the pets with holy water and bestow a blessing. Acknowledging that pets are very much a part of the family, Rev Hart said pets bestow on their masters encouragement, commitment and affection and demand so little in return.

With over 100 Cavaliers entered and the FCI rule that there is a limit to the number of dogs that can be assessed by a judge in one day, this meant a second judge (Peter) was appointed to do the puppies. Every dog gets a written critique so a judge takes as long to judge 85 dogs in Europe as they would in the UK, where normally only the first 2 in each Championship class gets reported on. Here are some of the main winners.

" Two Cavalier King Charles "      41cm x 47 cm

This work was made arround 1900 and until now was in the owners family.

Biography of  Charles Valton (1851 - 1918). Born in Pau, France in 1851. He was a student of both Antoine Louis Barye and Emmanuel Fremiet, capturing the finest points of both masters. From Barye, Valton learned the importance of detail and definition of his subjects and from Fremiet he received the sensitivity and ability to project his subjects in a natural state. From the age of fifteen Valton spent much of his time at the Jardin des Plantes with Barye and Fremiet who were both directors at that famous Paris zoological garden.  Valton exhibited over seventy models at the Paris Salon from 1868 until 1914 winning several medals. In 1883 he became Professor of sculpture at the Germain Pilon School and in 1906 Valton received the Cross of the Legion d'Honneur.  He is best known for his models of big cats as well as for using a mixture of materials in his sculpture such as white marble to depict snow or the use of granite as a base for his animals.

Fascinating delve into Elsa-Marie Kitching'sfamily history. Elsa-Marie has the Ixion affix and lives in Wiltshire. ImaMIges  "This is a portrait of my ancestor, Kirsten Munk (1598 - 1658) who was the second wife of King Christian 1V of Norway and Denmark. She was, by all accounts, an exceedingly difficult lady with a hugely ambitious mother who pushed her forwards to seduce Christian after his Queen died. Insisting that as she was from The Nobility, she should marry the King and not become just one of his mistresses. Thus they married but not in church and Kirsten was never crowned as Queen. The marriage being morganatic ie two people of unequal social status marry but one does not receive the titles and remains un-crowned. She was awarded the title of Countess of Schleswig-Holstein. Kirsten was cunning, guileful and made many enemies. The only thing she had in common with Christian’s first wife, Anne Catherine was her love of toy spaniels, as you can see from the portrait above painted by Jacob Van Doordt in 1623.  From his two wives and three mistresses, King Christian had no less than 24 children and Kirsten Munk gave birth to twelve of them, in a fourteen year period."

...... and People’s Choice Award Event

On the Friday evening of October 9th 2014, the grand ballroom of the luxury Crowne Plaza hotel in Louisville, Kentucky was the site of CKCSC USA Third Annual Top Twenty Gala 2014. The evening was glamorous, there was excitement in the air and everyone gathered together, mingling with many Cavalier enthusiasts who they do not normally get to see often, imbibing on the liquor of their choice and snacking on the variety of dishes offered.

Alison Matos diligently checked everyone in, handing out the Program and the ballot for each person to vote in the People’s Choice, as more and more people arrived to participate and enjoy this annual spectacular.  Ricky Perkins was responsible for the design and printing of the Program, Arm bands and Ballots.

Anne Eckersley began the Top Twenty Gala by explaining the purpose of the Gala.  She talked about it being an annual celebration of the very best Cavaliers and about getting together as top breeders, under one roof, to talk dogs and to actually see so many extraordinary Champions being shown.  The event was not about showing and winning – it was about the camaraderie of our membership, it was about supporting our club, it was about the honor of actually having a dog invited to the Top Twenty and having the opportunity to celebrate with fellow breeders.  Anne continued to stress the importance of watching the stunning Cavaliers we had the fortune of observing during the Gala and that we needed to all strive towards their quality, whilst at the same time preserving their outgoing, happy attitude and working towards the longevity of the breed.   This in turn raises the bar to produce top quality, healthy, happy Cavaliers.

The Top Twenty Gala is a competition of the year’s (October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2014) most successful CKCSC, USA, Conformation Cavaliers.  They were formally invited to enter and participate in an event that was judged by three mystery judges from three different categories :

1) Licensed Cavalier Breeder/Judge (Michael Levy, Pascavale Cavaliers, UK)        2) CKCSC, USA, Breeder with an in-depth knowledge of the breed (Paula Campanozzi, Luxxar Cavaliers, USA)

3) Licensed all-breed judge, not a breeder nor owner of Cavaliers(Melinda Lyon, Lair O’Lyon West Highland White Terriers, USA)

The names of the judges were kept secret (not one person knew who the judges were!) until right before the table judging commenced.

It was such fun to hear Anne Eckersley introduce each judge with a few comments about each of their personal lives and individual involvement in dogs and judging.   Each judge was given a score sheet to fill out for the Table judging and then for the Movement judging.   Scores were accurately and confidentially tabulated by Jaime Redniss and Breda McCarty.

There was excellent participation in the event with 19 entries, a few of whom were unfortunately unable to attend.   The evening began with Liz Greak and Barbara Comer lining up each exhibitor as they entered the ring one at a time until the entire group of Cavaliers was in the ring.  They all filed out and each dog returned to the ring, one at a time, to be judged.

The first two dogs were shown for exhibition only.  Ch Forestcreek Double O Seven JW’s owner/breeder Dr. Kevin Cline felt there was a conflict of interest with one of the judges and he opted to withdraw his dog from the competition.  Ch Chadwick Leura JW’s owner/breeder Anne Eckersley was running the event and the rules disallow dogs owned by the organizers to compete.

As the dogs were being shown, some door prizes were given out.  The three judges were asked to choose the “Best Dressed Person at the Top Twenty” – this was their final judging assignment.  The last door prize was given to that person who was unanimously chosen by our three judges – it was Dr. Bruce Henry who they considered to be “dapper”!

While the scores were being tabulated there were the following Parades:  Parade of CKCSC Champions.  Parades of New Champions, Winners of Major Awards and Junior Warrant Title Holders (October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2014) who celebrated their successes in their own Parades as a part of the Top Twenty Gala that evening

Finally – the scores were added and the results were in.  The final three winners were announced after which third place was identified, then second place and then the winner.  Below they are listed in winning order:

1. Ch Hidden Creek Hugo Boss JW  2. Ch Melrose Gold for Bonitos Companeros JW  3. Ch Turretbank Magic Spell

2014 10-9 Louisville KY CKCSC 466

Top Twenty Gala winner was Ch Hidden Creek Hugo Boss JW owned and bred by Richard Green.

Top 20 Winner

The list of Top Twenty qualifiers for 2014 can be found on the CKCSC, USA website under Events – CKCSC Top 20.

People’s Choice Award was determined from the dogs entered in the Top Twenty Gala (by our Club members who attended the event).  Spectators completed a ballot, voting for their favorite at the end of the evening and placed the ballots in the ballot box.  The ballots were tallied the following day and the winner was announced at the banquet on Saturday evening.

The winner was: Ch Turretbank Magic Spell owned by Richard Green and bred by Katie Sloane

Richard Cornaby (Haydonleigh)travelled from Swindon in Wiltshire to judge the Humberside Winter Open show on 9th November near Doncaster. The entry was 81 and for the Special Award Classes, Chloe Kilcoyne (Granasil) did the honours. It was a debut for some of the Committee but they needn't have worried as it seemed to run like clockwork and everyone was having a good time. Nice to catch up with Chairman David (Crossley) who was looking well after his time in hospital.  Some photos for you to enjoy...

 PRECIOUS JADE

 10429435_10152900670698179_6560480992733542111_n

Pam Craig writes.."It is with great sadness that I pass on that Jade Cullen(Chlojade) passed away this week. She was 20 years old and had fought Cystic Fibrosis for all her short life. She was awaiting a lung transplant but alas this did not happen. Our thoughts go out to Ann-Marie, Clive, Chloe and many others who loved her dearly."
"Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, 2nd December at 13.20pm  at Gorleston Crematorium. Great Yarmouth. It is Jade's wish that bright colours are worn and anything 'Minion', Ki as this  was her love. Flowers and enquiries to Anglia Co-operative Funerals. Police station Road. Lowestoft. NR32 1NY. Any donations please to the Cystic Fibrosis Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital

A bright spark has indeed gone out. Jane Tubby Cullen, only 20 years old, from Lowestoft was taken from her family and friends far too soon. Jade fought her cystic fibrosis long and hard, waiting for new lungs but they never came. She was always an inspiration at Top Barn annual Cavalier get together and her courage and buoyant, bright outlook under such tremendous health issues was admirable and an inspiration. ML She will find peace now....sadly missed and hugs to her adoring family, Ann Marie, Clive and Chloe.

HOW "ART" THOU?

available from Hamshere Gallery

English, circa 1880, Spaniel, reverse intaglio crystal pendant. Very finely carved and painted and three dimensional. The gold worked setting is equally fine. An object first carved in reverse into the underside of a flat-backed piece of rock crystal, with a polished domed cabochon face, which slightly magnifies the finished work, then realistically oil painted in minute detail, also in reverse. Sometimes they were backed with ‘ mother of pearl ‘ to enhance the three dimensional ‘trompe l’oeil’ effect. Moonstone was occasionally used as an alternative material in which to carve.

SHE SELLS SEA SHELLS ParkinsoniaUnderStonebarrow

I was watching the TV programme "Flog It" the other evening and it was coming from Lulworth Castle in Dorset. Whilst the experts found the best antiques and collectibles to take to Auction, presenter Paul Martin was down on the seashore at Lyme Regis and telling us about the incredible Mary Anning, who came from a poor family and kickstarted the craze for fossil hunting in the early 19th century. The painting below popped up on screen and caught my attention. Could that be a Cavalier? Certainly looks like it. So I went and Googled Mary Anning and it was quite fascinating.

Mary Anning born 1799 and died 1847. The Anning family lived in poverty collecting and selling fossils. Even before Mary's time, locals supplemented their income by selling what were called "curios" to visitors. These were fossils with colourful local names such as "snake-stones"  "devil's fingers", and "verteberries" to which were sometimes attributed medicinal and mystical properties.Fossil collecting was in vogue in the late 18th and early 19th century, at first as a pastime, but gradually transforming into a science as the importance of fossils to geology and biology was understood. Mary was a fossil collector and later a palaeontologist who became known around the world for important finds she made in the Jurassic Marine fossil beds at Lyme Regis in Dorset, where she lived. Her work contributed to fundamental changes in scientific thinking about prehistoric life. Mary Anning searched for fossils in the area's Blue Lias cliffs, particularly during the winter months when landslides exposed new fossils that had to be collected quickly before they were lost to the sea. It was dangerous work, and she nearly lost her life in 1833 during a landslide that killed her dog, Tray. Her discoveries included the first ichthyosaur skeleton correctly identified. Mary was the basis of Terry Sullivan's 1908 tongue twister She sells sea shells....

 DEDICATED TO THE BARD

  Zoffany-sml

Garrick’s Temple to Shakespeare is a hidden gem on the banks of the River Thames. Few locals truly appreciate the importance of the little temple. The temple is situated in its own private garden, from which Hampton Court Palace can be seen on the horizon. It is a picturesque octagonal building built in the eighteenth century, and preserves the essence of Hampton from the time. The temple is timeless, and through the windows, you can see almost the same view as Garrick did when he was alive.
The commissioner of the temple, David Garrick, was a Shakespearian actor who lived from 1717-1779. His life resembles a “rags to riches” story as he started his career penniless, and moved to London in the hopes of fulfilling his dreams to become an actor. Through his idolization of William Shakespeare, Garrick changed acting for years to come. Instead of the traditional “proclaiming” style of acting of the time, he experimented with a more contemporary style in which he showed emotions through his facial expressions. He married the beautiful Eva Maria, featured in paintings by Johan Zoffany, and had dogs, including a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but never had children of his own. Garrick wrote many of his own plays, some of which he acted in lead roles, designed for him by him at Duruy Lane Theatre.
The temple features many works of art, including paintings of Garrick and his family, but also many of Shakespeare himself. The large statue dedicated to William Shakespeare is rumored to feature the body of David Garrick as the model, with Shakespeare as the face.

Karen Bacon writes..  "My darling 5 month old "Betty" was given her wings on Tuesday after a short illness, rare and even more so in such a baby. I still can't believe she has gone or why this has happened, She was given the controversial new Lepto 4 vaccine but whether this is significant or not I shall probably never know.... RIP my sweet girl, taken far too soon xxx"
