it has been a roller coaster few weeks in the Cavalier World...many of us have experienced all sorts of different emotions...sadness, loss, hope, despair, joy, relief, pride, uncertainty, anger...but through all of it has emerged a strong message...caring Cavalier people support each other and offer help in many ways to those who need it in difficult times. They do what ever is needed to protect our breed when it is in jeopardy. We have loads of wonderful people in Cavaliers who far outnumber the unworthies who are not fit to own these lovely creatures. Thank you to everyone out there who loves and safeguards Cavaliers....because we all know..."they are worth it".

ImagesCAVALIER ART COLLECTION FOR SALE
For over 40 years, Mary and Bill Kendrick (Jasago Cavaliers)who live in Canada, have been raising Cavaliers and throughout that time have been collecting Cavalier art. Bill writes "Those who visited us in Prince Edward Island know it was displayed throughout Briarcliffe Inn. However, we have sold the Inn, downsizing in the process, so we now need to find new homes for our collection. We currently have over a hundred prints, lithographs, steel engravings, illustrations and stamps available for sale.  All are framed....most with antique frames. If you’re interested in seeing them, just go to our Flickr page titled  Cavalier Art. We can take Mastercard, Visa, Discover or eTransfers.  All prices are in Canadian ;poidollars.  No tax required. We are happy to ship your purchases to you....although the prices listed on the site do not include packaging, shipping and insurance.  That will be determined based on where we have to ship the items. We will be travelling from Dec 6th – January 23rd so will not be able to ship anything until after we return.... email billkendrick@island-images.ca

2557962_1415992968.7872

from Elaine Mitchell. Cambridge Cavaliers.....We need to cBythange policies so that the horrors of puppy mills and auctions will stop.
I tracked down the man at the American KC who is in charge of infractions of these things. He returned my call very promptly, and read off all the rules and regulations that pertain to such things, he gave me a few words of advice. First, if you belong to an AKC club, make sure your delegate pressures the board to change policy. My personal recommendation is that every dog sold in an auction or in a pet store immediately have it's AKC registrations cancelled. He also recommended that we all personally write to the AKC at their New York headquarters and state our case. The American Kennel Club, 4th floor, 260 Madison Ave, New York, NY. USA, 10016. Attention: Board of Directors.
His name is Jack Norton, his phone number is 919-816-3574. His email is jxn@AKC.ORG  He is prepared for our phone calls and emails, so get on it, everyone.
Please be polite, this gentleman was very nice to me and spent time explaining things. You will get further with peaceful pressure (Ghandi) than with rudeness and abuse (rioting).
If someone has the facts on anone illegally registering a dog without an export pedigree, please send them to Mr Norton. Falsifying papers will hang wrong doers faster than anything.
If anyone knows anyone in the UKC, they need the same pressure. They are the only other multi breed registry in the US. Dogs without legitimate registrations are of little value. Believe me, puppy mills and the Amish do not bother with things of no commercial value.
If everyone that sent a donation to save the Missouri Auction Cavalierscontacts the AKC---that will be a lot of pressure. If you donated more than once, write more than once. If you are at an AKC show in the next little while, discuss this with your AKC rep. This is high profile now, so close in for the kill.
Repost this, cross post this and make sure every friend you have in dogs is on this. Whether they know it or not, every breed is in danger. For many it is too late, but it is up to us to stop it now.

 PAPER DOLLS

  ReigningCatsAndDogs_1

Reigning Cats and Dogs Paper Dollsby Charlotte Whatley is both historic and hilarious. Imagine centuries of famous rulers from Emperor Justinian to Henry VIII, from Richard the Lionheart to Queen Victoria, from Marie Antoinette to Elizabeth II. Picture their luxurious robes of state and glorious gowns, their extravagant jewels and crowns. But now picture those same rulers as if they had been dogs and cats, all dressed-up to reign in royal style through the ages. This clever, funny, fabulously executed book features four paper dolls, two adorable dogs (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Corgi) and two cunning cats (Persian and Siamese) with 17 meticulously detailed historic costumes worn by:

Emperor Justinian,Empress Theodora,King Richard I,Queen Berengaria,King Henry VIII,Queen Jane Seymour,Queen Anne Boleyn,King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, King Henry IV,Queen Marie de Medici,Emperor Napoleon,Empress Josephine,Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip

EVERYTHING IN THE GARDEN IS ROSY

A Sutton Coldfield couple, Phil and Diana Berry open up their garden to the public for charity every year and have been featured on national television. The garden has been created in their Little Aston home over the last 12 years and was shown on BBC Two's 'Great British Garden Revival'. Diana said: "It was great that the BBC decided to feature our garden here in Little Aston, and "Norah", our little Cavalier, made sure she got in on the show! We love our garden and, in particular, our collection of rhododendrons, some of which are quite rare. It is also a real pleasure to share it all with visitors to our garden." The aim of the TV series is to encourage people to take up gardening and 'rediscover their passion for plants'.

MANCHESTER MOVERS AND SHAKERS

The show known as the NorthernClassic took place on 16th January at its normal popular venue, Stafford showground. Cavaliers were on a Friday...not the best day to travel on the roads as there always seems to be congestion, but that did not deter the exhibitors who came for the opinion of this year's judges, seasoned Rob Sansom (Byermoor)and Andy Vella (Cinderaic)who was awarding CCs for the first time. The winners are reported on the site (by Steve and David) so here are simply some photos to enjoy.

WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE

Maris Kennedy was in a more urgent rush than most, one Tuesday morning amid traffic delays that brought her neighbouring roads to a standstill.
With an ill dog requiring urgent veterinary attention she had two options: face a backlog of stationary traffic or place seven-year-old Chloe, in her grandchild's pram and hike. She felt forced to choose the latter. It took her and husband, Doug, just under an hour to push the sick dog through Canberra Nature Reserve to the vet where they were relieved that Chloe's condition was diagnosed as a virus.

JUSo sorry to learn that Mick Compston, husband of Caroline Gillies Compston (McGoogans) passed away in November. It was a difficult time for the family as they also said goodbye to Caroline's sister in December. Many will have met Mick when they lived in the South of England and their circle of Cavalier friends increased when they moved to the Scottish Borders several years ago. Caroline writes that Mick had been ill and confined to the house for the last couple of years. Our thoughts go out to Caroline and the family.

 DOUGES GALLERY

1917583_391794557060_6113039_nJudy Gates was born with a rare gift that allows her to capture the personalities and beauty of dogs, cats and other creatures with a paintbrush to create exquisite works of affordable art that are destined to become family heirlooms.

The East Providence, Rhode Island resident has also gained a notable reputation as a breeder of quality Cavaliers, some of which reside in South Coast homes, where they have brought much joy and happiness to their human families.

Judy, who attended the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, purchased her first purebred dog, a Great Pyrenees, in 1968 when her former husband was deployed in Vietnam.“I didn’t grow up with purebred dogs,” she begins, adding that one of her childhood pals was a collie-chow mix named Lady. The faithful family companion roused the artist’s great interest in Man’s Best Friend and opened the door to a new world filled with fun and adventure, many wonderful friendships, and a multitude of colorful ribbons and rosettes. The respected dog fancier recalls that she was introduced to the Great Pyrenees as a child when one of these large white working dogs visited her backyard one day and spent a few hours lounging on the lawn. Her father explained that the breed was employed by shepherds to guard flocks in the mountains that form a natural border between France and Spain. Judy never forgot that impressive dog, and searched for a puppy once her then-husband gave her the okay to purchase a canine to serve as a companion while was away serving in the military.“I didn’t like the first dog show I went to, but a year later I had a show dog,” she remembers, adding that she campaigned four of the massive dogs to their championships with the help of professional handlers. The dog fancier’s focus changed to the Cavalier in the early 80s, which resulted in the development of a limited breeding program. Now age 70, she exhibits mostly at Cavalier specialty shows and has owned 10 champions of this charming toy breed that was developed in England, where these friendly canines have served as beloved family companions for centuries.“Ideally, the Cavalier is a very loving, sweet-tempered dog that accepts everyone,” the respected breeder observes. “They always love their owner best, but they love everyone else second best.”. In 1981, Judy combined her passions for art and animals and created Dogues Gallery Original Artworks, where she sells hand painted pillows, slates, keepsake boxes, Christmas ornaments and other products. She paints both purebred and mixed-breed dogs, as well as cats. The unique collectibles are often offered as prizes at specialty dog shows and are treasured by exhibitors and dog and cat fanciers across the globe. One of her favorite pastimes is to stroll along area beaches in search of paperweight-sized rocks weathered by ocean waves. The artist paints each beach stone to resemble a puppy and is inspired by the shape of the rock to depict the animal either in a sleeping or alert pose. For more information about Dogues Gallery Original Artworks, visit the studio on Facebook or e-mail: jgates8@cox.net

VytBereaved250px-Corynocarpuslaevigatus012dog owner Aprilanne Bonar is on a mission in New Zealand to raise awareness about a poisonous type of berry that killed her much loved Cavalier, Malo. The karaka tree, aka New Zealand Laurel, is now in season (January to April) and its fruit contains strong toxic levels. Malo became unwell on January 23 and began vomiting and having fits and died less than two days later. The berries are a major food source for wood pigeons but the fresh kernels inside them contain the alkaloid karakin which is highly toxic to other animals. Signs of karaka poisoning include weakness, back leg paralysis and convulsions that can lead to death. Symptoms can often be delayed by 24 to 48 hours.

11162583New Zealand Veterinary Association head of veterinary services Callum Irvine said karaka trees are endemic and widely spread across New Zealand. The berries' level of toxicity varies depending on the maturity of the tree and the climate. Berries from the previous year can remain just as toxic," he said. Unfortunately there is no antidote.

 ICE, ICE BABY

Pets-cold-feet_newb

People in parts of the USA aren’t the only ones suffering from a seemingly endless winter of cold, snow and ice-slick sidewalks. Their dogs are feeling the cold too!

While millions of residents from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast shovel snow deep into the season and hunker down awaiting relief, their dogs are either missing out on walks or left vulnerable to injury with each salt-coated step. Rock salt and shards of ice, can cut feet or get wedged between toes, de-icing chemicals can burn paw pads and frostbite can happen. That’s led to a late-season boost in sales of doggy boots, which can be an annoyance for canines but allow owners to protect pets that are like family.

Malia Ebel trained 13-year-old Seymour and 12-year-old Sanders when they were young to wear boots, which are a necessity instead of a fashion choice. “My dogs don’t have a problem with the snow; it’s the salt that hurts their feet,” she said. “So it’s great that their feet are protected and they can walk on the street all winter. In a winter like this, there has been so much snow and they’ve had to salt the roads very consistently.”54fbed240ae4f.image

The persistent winter has pushed Boston close to its 20-year-old snowfall record with more than 100 inches and seemingly froze Niagara Falls in place. While people throw up their hands at each new storm, the weather is giving a boost to pet clothiers.

At the Barker & Meowsky Paw Firm in Chicago, the number of boots sold each day in the last six weeks was four times higher than a typical day this winter. Company President, Alice Lerman said.  Boots called “Muttluks,” fleece-lined boots that resemble furry Mukluks for people, were good sellers, as were Pawz disposable booties that look like balloons and come in 10-packs. But the boots that sold out every day were a new product called Saltsox. They slip on easily, stay dry and come shaped like a dog’s foot so they won’t fall off as often, Lerman said. There are even less intrusive options: Musher’s Secret wax was designed for sled dogs and forms a shield on paws to keep ice and salt out. Bag Balm moisturizer and Vaseline also can be used in a pinch.

VINTAGE CAR FIT FOR A ROYAL BREED

1425802716734
A massive 1924 Sunbeam and an aristocratic Cavalier named Charlie were two of the biggest hits at Canberra's 2015 Wheels Exhibition. "I bought this car as an unfinished project about six years ago," owner Ross Merdal said. "I'm not sure whether we got the car to match the dog or the dog to match the car."

The event, the thriving Canberra car club community's annual big day out, attracted more than 1000 cars and at least five times that number of spectators.

LUCY WON AT "RUFFS"

Lucythecava_c2157684_15313_906

A Cavalier from Studley in Warwickshire who was rescued from a life of misery, has been hailed as a champion by the alternative to Crufts. Lucy was named as the RSPCA’s RUFFS champion after an online vote. Her owner, Lisa Garner took her in from a rescue centre in March 2013 after she had come from a puppy farm where she had been used to breed pedigree puppies in horrendous conditions.  “I’m over the moon that Lucy has won Ruffs. I’m like a proud parent. People have been so kind. When Lisa first had Lucy she was in a terrible state and was completely withdrawn. At a tiny 3.5kg, her legs were stained with urine and she had clumps of fur missing. But with a lot of hard work, love and patience, Lucy’s life has been transformed and she is now an ambassador for dogs everywhere. Last year she was named most heroic hound at the National Pet Show and starred in her own fund-raising calendar. She has 3,000 followers on Facebook and raises awareness of puppy far

"H" STEPS UP

Ben-main-use

Former "STEPS" recording star, Ian 'H' Watkins raised £1,240 for Friends of the Animals RCT recently by taking part in television’s Family Fortunes quiz.

Dog lover "H" who comes from the Rhondda in Wales raised the money which will be used towards the cost of life-changing surgery for 'Ben' the Cavalier who came into the care of Friends of the Animals RCT from a puppy farm. Due to the lack of care and attention shown to Ben in his young life...believed to be two years old....his eyes were in a terrible condition and he is almost blind. He is currently under the care of an eye specialist vet who estimates the cost of protecting Ben’s remaining sight – and possibly improving it – will be £3,000.

THE VOICE OF WESTMINSTER

20150208-LOVE-slide-S917-videoSixteenByNine1050-v2

"Angel, the Cavalier and Grace, the Brittany live in a one-bedroom condominium in New York near the river on East 72nd Street. The setup is pretty perfect with a sofa that fairly begs to be flopped on, and a flat-screen television that’s always set to their favorite channel, NY1. Even better, they’re on the fourth floor, which means it’s a quick elevator ride to the great outdoors, and a very short walk to the park where all their friends hang out.

But Angel and Grace are not alone in their paradise. They share it with a couple of bipeds, who though oddly territorial about the bedroom, have been successfully trained to provide hearty meals at suitable intervals and to offer extravagant praise and abundant treats even for rookie tricks like begging and rolling over.

This is the residence of David Frei, the veteran co-host of Westminster Dog show at Madison Square Garden, New York, and his wife, Cherilyn. The Freis have been fixtures of the far Upper East Side since they moved here from Seattle in 2002.

“A dog trainer had recommended the area because of its proximity to Carl Schurz Park,” said Mr Frei, 65, who has had considerable experience with both human and canine ball-chasers. He worked in public relations for the Denver Broncos, the San Francisco 49ers and ABC Sports before becoming director of communications for Westminster. Because of the dogs, the couple chose a low floor. “When they’re very young or very old, it’s difficult to be high up,” Cherilyn said. “When they need to go out, they need to get out fast. Or if there’s an emergency and the elevator isn’t working, we have to carry them. We learned that lesson when we lived on the 39th floor.”

The apartment is a shrine to man’s best friend. Dogs are represented in bronze, crystal, Limoges, glass and needlepoint, on pillows, throws and mugs. There are oil paintings of dogs, line drawings and photographs of dogs. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, canines figured in the couple’s romance. David, a former breeder of champion Afghan hounds, was discussing therapy dogs during a Westminster telecast in 1998 and Cherilyn who was writing her master’s thesis on animal-assisted therapy, just happened to tune in and prevailed on a mutual friend to introduce them. They married in 2000.
In the modestly furnished apartment, what is convenient for the humans is generally trumped by what is comfortable for the dogs. The couch is dirt-colored. The rugs are carpet remnants that get swapped out annually because of the depredations of myriad paws. Perhaps that’s just another way of saying that she and David know what’s important. “There’s just enough sky in our view that Grace can go to the window and see the birds fly by. It’s quiet here and it’s good for all of us. We’re at peace.”

........CALUM IS SO CUTE

IMG_2960-660x496A young Scot, Calum Taylor, aged seven, from Moray, took part in the Scottish Kennel Club’s Junior handler of the year contest in Cumbernauld where he handled his Cavalier,'Jazz', in the age 6-12 group. Calum’s mum, Joanna said: “The most important thing when handling a dog is having a good bond with it. Calum spends hours with Jazz. Every day when he’s finished with his homework he’s out taking her a walk, brushing her and playing with her. He’s a natural with her, and I think I’m more nervous about the competition than he is. Calum is totally dog-obsessed, and has a real passion for it.” During the event the young handlers had to escort their pets through certain patterns and movements, with marks being awarded for how well dogs are presented. Calum is a member of the Banff, Moray and Nairn Canine Club.

.......MADISON, GROOMED FOR STARDOM?

Dogshow(1)WEB

Madison Millington from Rhyl, aged eight, and her nine-month-old Cavalier'Libby' won sixth place in the Young Kennel Club under 12s "Groom Through" at Crufts. During the class, entrants were required to show a full understanding of their dog’s coat. The Ysgol Llywelyn pupil was given the go ahead to compete at Crufts after she won the Young Kennel Club grooming competition in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, last year. Madison has four dogs - two Cavaliers and two Bichons. Nut
Madison’s mum, said: “Madison was really excited but very nervous. Apart from fun dog shows the only proper competition she has entered was the qualifier. Every owner and their dog has to qualify before competing at Crufts. It was her first time competing at the show. Madison didn’t realise until she started telling people she was going to Crufts what a big achievement it was. The more people that told her how amazing it was that she was going, the more excited she got.”
Madison is training in agility with Merseyside Agility Dogs on the Wirral and also does obedience classes in Prestatyn. Ms Millington added: “She groomed our other cavalier called Bella in her qualifier but could choose any cavalier to groom at the dog show. She chose Libby as she is younger and she is a confident dog, except she wasn’t too sure of the bright lights."

.....MAGGIE SHOWING US ALL HOW TO DO IT

Meet Maggie from Sunderland, the red haired 8 yearoldgranddaughter of Ted and Pat Rogerson (Rabymar) who is already well known in the Cavalier ring. Despite her youth she has won lots of classes, red cards, rosettes and trophies with the Cavaliers she handles. Maggie does it in a quiet, sympathetic, accomplished way and is always generous win or lose.

 TOP DOLLAR

Richard-Ansdell-20151-1496x1940

"King Charles Spaniels" by Richard Ansdell, RA (British 1815-1885) oil on canvas 36 x 28in.

A Beagle took top honours at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show this year, but it was a painting of two spaniels that was the pick of the litter at the Bonhams' Dogs in Show & Field Auction on Feb. 18th. The painting sold for $81,250 or £54,969.

The annual auction is held to coincide with the Westminster show and the art in the auction included every breed recognized by Westminster. Ansdell’s oil on canvas garnered the highest sale this year.As to why it performed so well? “It’s a very attractive painting,” Alan Fausel, the vice president and director of fine art at Bonhams, said. Though it might have also had something to do with the painting’s previous owner — the infamous socialite Claus von Bülow who sold it and other pieces from his collection to Sotheby’s in 1988. Von Bülow had been acquitted in 1985 in a retrial of charges that he twice tried to murder his wife. The auction reportedly was part of the settlement of a lawsuit brought against Von Bülow by his step children. Under terms of the agreement, he was to leave the United States, give up all claims to his wife's estate and any right to profit from publicizing the affair. The sale of the outstanding art collection, put together by Von Bülow and his wife over many years, wildly exceeded its estimates.

  NAN & JAKE 1983

A blast from the past.....a picture sent by Nanette Foster (then Nan Armstrong) showing her winning the RCC in 1984 at Border Union with MALANIS JAKE (Ch Homerbrent Andy Capp ex Malanis Florence) under judge Brigadier Burgess. 'Jake' won 1CC and 4RCC. You can see the late Rainy Brown in the background and it seems, with the Brigadier in shirt sleeves, that Border Union was blessed with the good weather it is known for. It was a show that we also recall with fondness as our Ch Craigowl Storm of Homerbrent won her 2nd CC on the day.

Featuring KOROLEVSKY  NATALYA who at 13 years 2 months won the £20 award ( donated by Norma and Gordon Inglis on behalf of the Cavalier Chat Forum) for the oldest Cavalier exhibited at the Cavalier Club Championship show 2015. As this was her show swan song, her owner/breeder Hilary Barlettis super proud. Hilary says..."She enjoys her walks and likes to stop and think whether any other dogs on the horizon are worth going to meet. One of my grandson’s favourites, as he used to take her to bed when visiting  and I  remember him crying his eyes out if she was not there in the morning ! I  love her dearly and trust she will continue to enjoy her life."   enjoy your retirement, Natalya!

 THOSE GOLDEN YEARS

IMG_2254

...from Fran Hellman (Sunjays Cavaliers) ....On February 28, 2015 we had the privilege of celebrating our 'Sammy's' 15th birthday.  He is a leap year puppy, born on February 29, 2000.  'Sammy' aka AKC CH Highland Fairfield Samuel CD, C-CD HIT, AX, AXJ, CGC, TT, Reg. Therapy Dog and R.E.A.D.is our first cavalier, so a a significant dog for us. Bred by Ann Danenbergand sired by Keyingham Ludovic out of AKC CH Fairfield Emily Dickinson, we are forever grateful to Chuck Minter (Fairfield) for entrusting us with our very special little dog at 4 months of age. 'Sammy' made us fall in love with this wonderful breed.  He has excelled in anything that we have ever asked of him. His temperament is so outstanding that he has made a perfect therapy and R.E.A.D. dog.  During the R.E.A.D visits he would sit and look at the book and the child the entire time during the reading. We retired Sammy from activities and he is doing IMG_1074quite well for his age. We cherish him each and every day. The photo below was taken on his 15th birthday and the R.E.A.D photo was taken the previous summer at his last visit.  'Sammy' is owned and loved by Fran, Howard, Jason and James Hellman from New York.

You smash it, Sammy!

Show flyer-X2The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Central Arizona serves the Phoenix area and it was a pleasure for Gordon and me to go out and judge their Specialty show held at the West World Polo Grounds in Scottsdale at the end of February.  We had already heard about the mild winters experienced in this part of the USA and everything they say is true. We left a cold, freezing UK and were met by sunshine and balmy conditions. Y6y6 How lucky were we that the show day dawned with a warm sun and a light breeze...perfect conditions for dog showing.

ImagesRichard Cornaby (Haydonleigh) Vice Chairman of the Midland Cavalier Club writes with the sad news that Mary Kiser (Harrowbeer) has passed away at the age of 93. "Mary was a doughty West Country exhibitor and served on the West of England Cavalier Club committee for many years, and was made an Honorary Life Member when she decided to retire. Her place in Cavalier History is assured through her bitch Harrowbeer Unity who became Molly Coaker’s foundation bitch and is behind several of the early Homerbrent champions. Mary spent the last few years of her life in the care of Roy & Margaret Wilkinson but eventually had to go into a nursing home". I always recall the warm smile Mary seemed to have and her broad West Country accent. RIP kind lady.

Tom Mather and his team of hard working committee put on a great one day Championship show scheduling the Toy Breeds at the UK TOY DOG SOCIETY Championship show at Stafford at the end of March. It almost feels like a Mini Club show for Cavaliers as our rings are exclusively housed in a hall next to the main part of the hall but still only within a minutes walk through to see the other breeds and the Best in Show ring. This year Lucy Koster (Harana) judged dogs and Marilyn Claydon (Brymarden) judged bitches. Two well respected breeders and judges.  Here are some pics from the show. Thanks to Laura for letting me nick a few... Images (2)

1908158_10152595519211599_2353685686488331494_n

Happy Birthday to Frondil Feonix who reached the grand old age of 14 years recently. Sadly his owners/breeders aren't here to celebrate the occasion as Dilys and Ron Jackson passed away some time ago. Luckily when Dilys became too ill to look after him he went to the loving home of Leila Tarabad. He is seen here, after his bath, enjoying a cuddle with her son, Noah. 'Feonix', despite his age is not on medication and the girls around still interest him.

The judge was Kevan Berry (RICKSBURY). "UNO" lives in London with Colombian born Cesar and  more of his recent successes include Best In Show at the CAVALIER KCS CLUB Show in March under Brian Rix (Ricksbury) and the Toy Group and Reserve Best in Show at LKA All Breeds show in December last year.

Download (4)One of Britain's biggest Veterinary charities is changing their treatment after a Cavalier was left with third degree burns. Alfie, was injured by a heat pad used to keep him warm while under general anaesthetic during an MRI scan.

Owner Lynne Edwards realised something was wrong when the 12 year-old started refusing food and she found pus oozing from his back. She took him to a local vet where staff clipped his fur and exposed severe burns.

The organisation which employs around 200 scientists, vets and support workers is now heating the pads in an incubator which allows them to control the temperature better. Lynne said: "I just don't understand how it could have been taken from the microwave and then put directly onto Alfie without it being noticed how hot it was. They have told me that they always warm them up in microwave but after what happened they have promised to change their practice. I am glad that they've now said they will do that but it took nearly a week for them to stop the practice."

Alfie, who is completely deaf, had the MRI scan on March 23 after a lump was discovered behind his ear. He is now on medication while his wounds heals, but could face surgery to remove some of the skins around the burn.

The Animal Health Trust confirmed their vets are now using an incubator to heat the pads. A spokesman said: "We pioneered the use of MRI in animals back in the 1990s and since then we have scanned more than 20,000 animals. In the last five years, around 3,000 of these patients would have had heat pads to maintain their body temperature. To the best of our knowledge, we have never seen anything like this before in any of the AHT's patients. We understand how upsetting this situation must be for Lynne Edwards and her family, and have carried out a full investigation. We have reviewed, and are updating, our Standard Operating Procedure for the use of heat pads. We are also standardising Images (2)the way in which all heat pads are heated at the AHT. We also plan to speak with veterinary colleagues, external to our organisation, to see whether this issue is more widespread than we are aware. All of these will further reduce the risk to patients undergoing anaesthesia."

METROPOLITAN DIVA

Last week at the Metropolitan Opera House, the soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek, dressed as a peasant girl in a 1900 Sicilian village, wailed and moaned that she was jilted, jealous and pregnant. But the instant rehearsal ended, Ms Westbroek moved on to more immediate problems. With enormous fake lashes still glued to her eyelids, she exchanged her buttoned-up black dress for a gray hoodie and raced to her nearby apartment to take Ruby, her Cavalier for a walk.  David McVicar, who directs the current Met productions, described Ms Westbroek as having “utter humility,” unlike the average diva. “She is generous to her colleagues to the fault of compromising her own stage work to enable them to feel more comfortable”. Well suited to a Cavalier then!

Images (1)Facebook scare stories of men in white vans roaming the Retford area stealing dogs are nothing more than urban myths, say police.

Retford Police have moved to quash the online rumours and say no dogs have been reported stolen to them since last summer. Andthe force says well-meaning people sharing the stories are causing dog owners unnecessary stress and anxiety.

Inspector Andy Knight said "We've had a lot of calls from people worried about stories of travelling criminals coming to the Retford area targeting dogs or leaving chalk marks on properties with dogs in. But there hasn't been a single theft of a dog here reported to us since last summer. Insp Knight said he believes the stories have spread through social media from other parts of the county. "One lady told me she doesn't leave her house because she's worried about her dogs being stolen. That's understandable – dogs are a huge part of people's families and they have such a personal relationship with them. And we urge people to report anyone acting suspiciously or any dog theft to us. We just don't want people sat at home terrified of leaving because of something they've seen on Facebook. The last dog stolen in Retford was a Cavalier called Jacko, who was taken from Hallcroft in August. After a lengthy campaign to reunite him with his family, he was returned home in October.

Charity DogLost said the online claims were "extremely unhelpful. "These things go round and round on social media and we waste a great deal of time trying to dispel them," said a DogLost spokesperson. "The most prominent at the moment are the guy selling fish who has dogs in the back of his van; paint on houses marking where dogs are – that one came from Australia – and one about dogs being sold as bait for animal fights.

"Dog theft, though, is an enormous problem nationwide and people need to take some very simple steps to prevent it happening." The charity said people should never leave their pets tied up outside shops, leave them in their car or let them run around in the garden unattended for a long time.

If you have a pedigree dog, the charity says never disclose how valuable it is and if you feel like your pet is being watched by potential thieves, vary your walking route or walk with a friend.

DogLostalso advised people to register their dog's details on its website,www.doglost.co.uk

Across the Trent in Lincolnshire, there have been warnings to owners of working dogs to be on their guard.  DogLostsays "those most desirable to thieves in the area are Labradors, Springer and Cocker spaniels and Lurchers. They will sell the dogs on quickly using websites such as Gumtree, Free ads and Preloved."

The Eastern Cavalier Society held its Championship show on 11th Aprilat the usual St Ives Leisure Centre. Judges this year were Michael Levy (Pascavale) dogs and Linda Flynn (Linjato) bitches.  The oldest Cavalier exhibited on the day was Neal Lunams' boy Mellow Moment with Flossybrook who will be 14 this year. He won the £20 award donated by Sue and Jem Sutcliffeon behalf of the Cavalier Chat Forum.  Mark Sedgwick sold sweepstake tickets at the show for the horses and jockeys taking part in the Grand National horse race held at Aintree Race Course near Liverpool that day. Collecting a tidy sum with the winning ticket was Leila Tarabad whose horse Many Clouds romped home in first place. Enjoy some formal and informal pics from the show.

The-age-of-adaline-2015-movie
New movie featuring two Cavaliers...Adaline
is a beautiful young woman who suffers an accident that changes her life forever. She has remained 29 years old for nearly 8 decades. She 042415-blake-lively-pup-age-of-adalinelives her life running away, not letting anyone get too close to her or know her secret, not letting herself fall in love. But life has something different planned for her, and she must make a decision that will change the course of her life and expose the secret she has kept hidden for many years. A small but consistent thread that weaves through the film is Adaline’s struggle to hold onto something, anything. For decades she has had the same breed of dog, a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, yet it doesn’t get any easier when each dog passes. Cavaliers "Hunter" and "Riley" take turns playing the dogs.

BIRTHDAYS, BEST IN SHOWS,

BYGONES and beyond...

CH 'BRANWELL'  BIDS US

FAREWELLDownload

It is indeed a sad day that I write CH KEYINGHAM BRANWELL is no longer with us. One of my favourites of all times and I, together with my co judge George Donaldson, had the pleasure to award him BEST OF BREED at CRUFTS in 2006.

6a010535952948970b0120a61aa919970b

Gill Baker wrote on the Cavalier Club website....

"It is with great sadness that I have to report that my beloved and gentle soulmate Branwell was peacefully put to sleep to save further suffering. He was 12¾ and had started refusing to eat, a blood test showed that his kidneys were starting to fail. The Vets and myself tried everything but to no avail and the decision was taken. He made his show debut at 6½ months old after 2 days of show training and retired at 10; during that time he amassed 42 CCs and 25 RCCs with many group placings. He was awarded BOB at Crufts in 2006. I would like to thank the late Colin Park and his wife Mary for breeding Branwell and giving us the opportunity to love and cherish this once in a lifetime dog. I would also like to thank all the judges for all Branwell’s merits and all his supporters over the years; I have kept every congratulatory card that was sent, they were so appreciated. Thank you also to Steve who drove us the length and breadth of the country. We are all devastated here and need some time so please no phone calls for a few days."

AtCrufts 2006 he was the jewel in the Crown for me (and George) and my report read "Sparkling Blenheim on exceptional form. Judging should always be done from a positive perspective and a judge should look for dogs with the most good points so that they can be utilised to further the breed's progress. Here was a dog that was easy to assess. What's not to like? Great size, good coat, sound mover, excellent topline and tail carriage, pretty head type, eyes and pigment deeply pigmented, ultimate showman. Worthy winner of the CC and my co judge shared the opinion that he deserved BOB. Like the energizer bunny, he just keeps going!"

IMG_2566

And he did just that, winning high awards well into the Veteran classes. . One of the Breed's GREATS....it was such a privilege to have judged him, exhibited alongside him and to simply have been in his presence. RIP sweet boy and condolences to his owner Gill Baker...they were a formidable team.

Two of the most famous Cavalier breeders in the world had birthdays recently. Everyone on the Cavalier planet knows the Alansmere affix and the charismatic breeders Alan Hall and John Evanswho have graced our breed for over 4 decades. Their unique legendary Best in Show win with Ch Alansmere Aquarius at Crufts in 1973 is what most of us can only dream of. So a belated happy birthday guys....I know they were both thrilled to be remembered by friends, including Mary Forrester and Gordon and Christine Meek,  who organised celebrations for the events.

John, who turned 80 in March is seen here recently with good friend Evan Ryan (Cavalli)from Ireland. Thanks for the pic, Evan.

The Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno is an extensive cemetery located on a hillside in the district of Staglieno of Genoa. Covering an area of more than a square kilometre, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. This piece, marking the grave of his wife Giuditta, was made and erected by sculptor Santo Varni (1807-1885) whose work in the graveyard is represented by over 40 pieces.  Thank you to Davidina Novara for this.

CAVALIERS STILL WORK

THEIR CHARM....

P1010207

from Elsa Marie Kitching (Ixions) who lives in Wiltshire.

"Here is a promo shot from the Spring/Summer Kleenezee Catalogue. Thus proving that our breed is still in favour where Branding Architects are concerned. We were recently on holiday in Wengen, a ski resort in the Swiss Alps. Very quiet, no cars and only reached by funicular railway. Some of the hotels are dog friendly. Way up  the mountains, on the pistes where the Apres Ski Set sip their lagers and lattes in front of the Eiger and the Jungfrau, relaxing in deck chairs in the bright sunshine, were dogs.
We saw, Berenese Mountain dogs – the local dog of the Berenese Oberland. West Highland Whites, Rough-Coated Collies, Shi Tzus and.......  a much admired , very beautiful Tricolour Cavalier with a stunning coat. No dogs on skis though and none wearing pom pom hats! The Saint Bernard’s have been replaced by’ Saint Helicopter’. The surface of the snow was smoothed over by ‘Piste Maintenance’  preventing  it from sticking onto the feet of the dogs making their pads sore. That is why we don’t take ours out when there is heavy snowfall. Sadly, three days after we came back, Inca, our little B/Tan bitch (going back to Ch. Culverhill Pickpocket ) went down with an open pyometra. I was grateful it had happened once back home and not whilst staying with our friends who also have a cavalier. We rushed her off to our vet where she had an emergency radical hysterectomy. Aged seven and a half , it was her first ever visit to a vet. Thankfully she has made a full recovery and will soon be doing that which she loves -  casting around the army ranges over Warminster putting up the Meadow Pippits, Skylarks and Snipe. We have only two cavaliers these days – it’s not enough!" Thanks Elsa, for that interesting snippet. Many of us have always known that Cavaliers are not the unhealthy breed they are painted!

Scan0002When I served on the Cavalier KCS Club Committee I became Editor of the Club magazine "Expressions". Incidentally, "Expressions" name was suggested by Mark Sedgwick (Pascavale) and chosen (out of 62) as the most appropriate in a competition to find a new name for the magazine which up until then had always been titled The CKCS Club magazine. I was even fortunate enough that world famous artist Deidre Hunt from Australia agreed to do the front cover. I sold raffle tickets for Deidre's original artwork which we had framed and this was won by Brenda Turnbull (Peakdowns)and proudly hangs in Brenda and Colin's house.

I edited "EXPRESSIONS" for 5 years from 1994 - 1998 and interest has been shown in resurrecting some of the articles that I put together. They gave a lot of enjoyment then and I am sure many will find them fun to read now 20 years on.

Seems only fitting, as it was his birthday the other week, that we start with Alan Hall (Alansmere). I ran a series of interviews over the 5 years with well known names in the breed, on the theme "Have you ever felt like talking to the BIG NAMES in the Breed but somehow never had the nerve. Well no need to worry, as Editor I have done it for you! Here follows an interview with Alan Hall who has reached the top and is a leading authority in Cavaliers. The questions are a mixture of facts and light hearted fun."

Carrickfergus man, Gordon Laverty’sCavaliers were so badly starved they looked like ‘walking skeletons’. Middle-aged Laverty from Northern Ireland has pleaded guilty to 10 animal welfare charges including four of causing unnecessary suffering to the Cavaliers.  Cavaliers found at his Carrick home were starving and unable to stand, their coats so long and matted they looked like piles of discarded rubbish. The shocking discovery led animal lover Catherine Southwell to set up the charity organisation ‘Cavaliers in Need’. “I will never forget the horrific sight of those dogs, they were starving, with their coats caked in dirt,” recalled Catherine.“ I prayed they would survive. I’ve always loved Cavaliers and the rescue service came about by accident in June 2013 when a friend rang me to see if I would take a dog that had been found i

Dog5_2 (1)n Co Antrim. It was in a very bad way with an open neck wound and was also malnourished. When I took the dog to the vet it had a chip and it turned out to be from a puppy farm.

We couldn’t get in touch with the owner so we contacted the local council and they went to see the owner to tell him we had his dog. The council staff were so horrified by what they saw at the puppy farm that they rang me and asked if I could take another nine dogs. They described what they found as ‘hell on earth’ and I will never forget seeing those dogs. It was absolutely horrific. The first thing was the smell and you couldn’t tell which end of a dog was the head and which was the tail because they were so badly matted and covered in their own filth. We got a lovely local dog groomer to shave them and what was underneath was another sight I will never forget. They were virtually starving to death, just skin and bone and it was a miracle they were alive.”

'Cavaliers in Need'now takes up every hour of Catherine’s spare time and she runs the service with the help of a team of over 80 dedicated volunteers and 30 foster families. Support for the group has spread through word of mouth and social media — they now have more than 7,000 followers on Facebook. Catherine says she is stunned by how quickly it has grown. The vast majority of the dogs she rescues are from the puppy farms and often at the request of owners who no longer have any use for the dogs either because they are too ill or too old to breed. She also has re-homed many pets who were neglected or abandoned by their owners. Catherine is so passionate about Cavaliers that she and her family now share their home with 18 of the precious pets. She says she never ceases to be horrified by the conditions some unfortunate dogs are being kept in.

“We have rescued different breeds but we can’t rescue them all which is why we concentrate on Cavaliers. I can’t even bear to think about the others, it’s just too much. People are very passionate about Cavaliers, they are an adorable breed. They have the sweetest nature and are so loving — there is not an aggressive bone in their bodies. Despite everything most of them have been through we find that with a little TLC and love they usually end up very happy pets.”

Gordon Laverty, whose address in court papers was given as Red Brae Road, Carrickfergus

Laverty receives a 10 month suspended prison sentence and banned form keeping pets for the next 20 years. Sentencing him at Belfast Magistrates' Court, the judge said he was only being spared immediate imprisonment because of his clear record and guilty pleas. Laverty must pay veterinary costs and legal fees of just over £700 as part of the sentence.

Ms Southwell, who attended the hearing with other Cavaliers in Needvolunteers, wept as the punishment was handed down. Outside court she said: "Obviously we would have liked an immediate prison sentence, but the 20-year ban was good."

Jane Naylorkindly sends a report and some photos from the FrenchCavalierClubshow. It was held over 2 days on 25th and 26th April but not in the normal location of Orleans but had moved to Nevers which may have explained the drop in numbers.

"The National d’élevage is over! It was a shame the entry was comparatively small as the hall at Nevers was large and airy and the committee had decorated it very nicely. Judging on Saturday afternoon started at 2pm with babies, puppies, juniors and veterans. I saw Séverine Abraham with a delightful homebred ruby puppy dog and asked his name. She replied “James Brown” and I couldn’t help myself: I sang “I feel good!” I had heard it in the car that morning….. He went on to be Best Puppy in Show. He’s a son of Grand Cru of Cuddly World’s who was Top Cavalier in 2013 – and his mother is Gloria Gaynor of Sevijean’s - so yes, there is a theme  Best Baby Puppy was a sweet blenheim bitch, Jestherlynn de Castelburry, bred and owned by Catherine and Kelly Vic. Best Junior was another ruby, the bitch Java de la Geode, owned and bred by Roger Madec. Best Veteran was one of those where you want them both to win! The best veteran dog is a favourite of mine, the black and tan Ch Barnaby des Buis de la Muscadière, but I love the best bitch too: the blenheim Bon Baiser de la Fieffe au Songeur, bred by Alain and Chantal Tranchant and owned by Séverine Abraham. It went toBon Baiser; she went on to be Best Opposite Sex to Best in Show.

At the dinner in the evening I sat next to people I hadn’t known before and the conversation was wide ranging and interesting: we were on tables of ten and at times I wanted to hear two concurrent themes; not easy. To my right sat Françoise Lempereur, who told me it was the first time she’d ever been to a show and stayed overnight at a hotel – with four dogs; mother and two progeny entered and one not for competition. She lives in the Auvergne region and is an “amateur”, which in French has the meaning of being a beginner AND a lover of something! She was to show her homebred tricolour bitch in open and her son in blenheim intermediate dog the following day; his tricolour litter sister had only had a "très bon" in Junior.

Sunday started with sun but during the day were a few horrendous thunderstorms. The rain continued through the night: I had four dogs in a hotel room so had to walk each individually, carry him or her back to my room, use the hairdryer and then do the next one……….three times. Because there were fewer dogs than usual and also because exhibitors suggested it, judging was staggered to allow people to actually watch the judging of other classes: admittedly there were only intermediate, open and Champion classes and all the King Charles to be judged, but it was very pleasant. Even so, a couple of classes did clash for some exhibitors.

The cardiologist Dr Haroutunian came along to do heart controls and I’d booked in Cedric, born on 1st September 2007. He has gone to Stade 2 after being Stade 1 for a few years – not bad.

CAC winners:
Blenheim dog :Ilton du Petit Monde de Brigalane
Blenheim bitch : Iseult De La Geode
Wholecolour dog: Irresistible Du Jardin De Claire ; ruby ;
Wholecolour bitch : Ile Ibiza Des Princes De La Foret Noire, black and tan,
Tricolour dog: I Have A Dream De Passeriphane
Tricolour bitch: It's In Your Eyes Des Contemplations,

Best Championwas another difficult one to choose: the best dog was the Tricolour Ch Genesis des Contemplations and the best bitch the Ruby Graine de Star du Jardin de Claire; the Ruby won.

The Breeders group; at least three dogs bred but not necessarily owned by the same person, was won by the blenheims “des Précieuses Pierres”

The stud dog/brood bitch class was won by the tricolour Ch Collins des Contemplations with an attractive group of his progeny

The committee of judges for Best of Breed; Heather Lamont, Roger Barenne and Anne Eckersley; was asked to vote by a tiny secret ballot: the dogs eligible were Best Junior, Best CAC winner, Best Veteran and Best Champion. I think the other judges; Sylvie Desserne, Julia Pennington and Caroline Gurtneralso voted. The unanimous choice was Ilton, and owner Françoise was, not surprisingly, in tears of joy! Best opposite sex was Bon Baiser de la Fieffe au Songeur. Both were applauded enthusiastically. The father of Ilton is Int Ch Byermoor Queensflite, bred by Rob Samson in the UK and owned by Nathalie Boutin-Triquet.

Best King Charles was Iggins de la Géode

FABULOUS FLORENCEAND

CLEVER CHINO

The Northern Ireland Cavalier Club held it's Championship show on 2nd May at Ballyclare Dunamoy-cottageswith Mary Rees officiating. Although the trip is becoming quite expensive for exhibitors travelling by car and ferry from England, Scotland and Wales it is such an enjoyable show that many still 'push the boat out' and make the trip. For Rob Sansom and Sheena Maclaine it was well worth the effort as they came home with 2 new Champions. CH BYERMOOR MASQUERADE JW owned and bred by Rob and CH LOCHBUIE CAPPUCINO owned and bred by Sheena's mum, Diana. Here are some pictures from the happy day.

"After a couple of enjoyable Cavalier garden parties with friends at 'Darilance', Andrew, I and friends came up with the idea of starting a Facebook group for Cavalier owners in New Zealand with an aim for building friendships, sharing news and meeting for play dates.  Images
We now have over 100 members made up of pet owners, breeders, exhibitors, and have so far had 3 events which involved 2 play dates at 'Darilance', and one Lakeside Walk.  Our aim is for building caring and responsible Cavalier ownership and for sharing news, daily antics of our Cavaliers, as well as show results and photos. Also regular health topics are loaded in the files section for ongoing reference. The Facebook group is called 'Cavalier Chat NZ' and is for any Cavalier owners in New Zealand to join.  Will take a look, Jan

Does anyone out there have any information on the origin of the photo and if it has any connection with the Breed in the 1920's.

Lovely news from Barbara Taylor who lives on the Isle of Wight with her Taybar Cavaliers. "So, so proud of my Cavalier Girls. At the Talking Dogs Rally Annual Spring Fling they excelled themselves. In the Nationwide Annual Awards. Trirayne Karrieanne was 2nd in Puppy, Taybar Annabella was 5th in Level 2 and Deranmar Stefanie was 6th in Level 1B.

On the day itself they achieved 4 Aces & 1 Outstanding and these scores led to them winning the Team Competition and a beautiful trophy, tying with a team of Border Collies. Taybar Annabelle L2, Taybar Stella PreL2 and Taybar Jessica Veteran L1Bmade up the team.  Many, many thanks to everyone at Talking Dogs for working so hard to put the Spring Fling on and introducing us to an exciting dog sport. My dogs love it." You do us proud, girls!

King Charles II wrote a Royal decree which allowed the spaniels access to all public buildings in the kingdom....so the Law does exist and Cavaliers can go almost anywhere!

UntitledDouai Dog Exposition in Northern France is a fun affair and the organisers and committee make a special effort each year to put on a show. This year the theme was obviously Scottish! Two well known Cavalier breeders/exhibitors Guillaume Tytgat (Les Cavaliers des Bettignies) and Dominique Acquiert (Des Contemplations) showed they were "Brave Hearts"! Thanks to L-F Photographie for the super views!

 NEED A HELP WITH THAT?

84c4d6594df1ad8d0e19007078eb0581Assistance dogs can make the world of difference to the lives of those that love them and rely on them every day. Lesley Price suffered such clinical anxiety she could not walk from the house to collect the mail. Then she met Sue and Andrew Holmes of Canine Helpers of Bray Park in Queensland Australia "I wouldn’t be alive today without Sue and Andrew,” Mrs Price said. "The Holmes put two of Mrs Price’s Labradors, Emma and Abey, through a private certification course for disability assistance dogs. Certification allows Mrs Price to go anywhere with her dogs. Since the dogs began helping, Mrs Price has given up her anxiety medication, has never been hospitalised as she was in the past and reduced her psychiatric visits in number and time. “I can go anywhere with Abey, I have no fear,” she said. Assistance dogs trained by Sue and Andrew Holmes are very smart. Current trainee Lacey can load and unload a front-loading washing machine. “Unfortunately, she cannot do the ironing,” Mrs Holmes said. Dogs trained for ex-soldiers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) will nudge their owners when they are sleeping to calm them down during a nightmare. A Cavalier called Bree looks after a diabetic and can take the phone off the hook and press a big button for help. Hear about what these dogs can do. Images1F5UEPV2Kelso in the Scottish Borders is the home of Border Union All Breeds Championship showand has to be one of the prettiest settings for a dog show. The weather tries hard to play nice and when it does it makes us realise how much fun can be had in a day in the sun at a dog show. This year it was a mixture of sunshine and showers but even the occasional rain couldn't dampen the spirits around the Cavalier ring where Heather Lamont (Moorfields) from Ballymena in Northern Ireland was the judge. Two new Champions were crowned and what made it more interesting was that they were both Black/Tans. More details of class winners etc can be found elsewhere on site www.cavaliers.co.ukScan1

I had a day away from exhibiting and instead judged the Smooth Coat Chihuahuas. Another Cavalier breeder wearing a different hat that day was Dorothy Bailey (Aldoricka) who was judging King Charles Spaniels and Japanese Chins.I managed to find time for a few snaps.

A CAVALIER IN TUDOR TIMES?

Tudor-dog

'Pourquoi' was AnneBoleyn'slapdog. The name is most commonly rendered in English as "Purkoy," a phonetic spelling which was also used in Old French. 'Pourquoi'was given to Anne by Honor, Lady Lisle. Honor was a very ambitious woman who strove to advance her family by cultivating a close relationship with the queen. She was born Honor Grenville and her second husband was Arthur Plantagenet, the bastard son of King Edward IV. Honor traveled with Anne to Calais in 1532, and remained behind in the city when her husband was appointed governor. Honor kept up with the comings and goings of the court through letters to her family and friends, 3,000 of which are preserved in the National Archives as the LisleLetters. They form an incredible archive of information about the royal court.

'Pourquoi'is mentioned in the letters by John Husee in the winter of 1533. He requests Lady Lisle send her dog "Purquoy" to him. Francis Bryan took 'Pourquoi'to court, and AnneBoleyn seems to have fallen in instant love with the dog. Bryan reported the dog hadn't been in his hands for more than an hour when the queen took it from him, and she sent the Lisles her "hearty thanks" for the dog.
But if Honor thought this gift would lead to the long hoped-for appointments for her daughters at court, she was sadly disappointed. She sent the Queen gifts of live quail, a cage with a songbird from her own chamber. Her agent wrote to tell Honor the bird did not cease to give Anne "rejoicing" from its pleasant songs, which should be a comfort to LadyLisle. But the "comfort" Honor sought was not on offer: Anne had no places open for the Plantagenet girls in her retinue. It wasn't until the reign of Jane Seymour that LadyLisle got her wish.
Pourquoiwould have had a diet of bread, which people of the Tudor age thought would keep a dog gentle and discourage his hunting instincts. Daily, he would have been perfumed and brushed, or had his fur rubbed with a "hair cloth" to remove any stray fur that could adhere to his mistress's fine gowns.
Sadly, Pourquoidied in December, 1534. Margery Horseman, one of Anne's ladies, wrote to the Lisles that the dog had "fallen from a window" and her ladies were so afraid of Anne's reaction, they asked the king to break the news to her.

The Lisles discussed the possibility of getting Anne another dog, but were told Anne did not want one. It doesn't appear Anne ever replaced Pourquoi. The Lisles cast about for ideas and proposed getting Anne a monkey, but were told Anne could not abide the sight of the beasts. Some writers have speculated Anne disliked monkeys because they were imported from Katharine of Aragon's native country, Spain.

Henry V111 had passed an ordinance in 1526 that the only dogs allowed at court were lapdogs. So many dogs were at court that their waste was becoming a real nuisance. Part of the problem was pets sometimes weren't housebroken - a servant cleaned up after them. With hundreds of dogs in the palace, "accidents" could quickly become a real problem. Smaller dogs were easier to deal with.
Only nobles were allowed to have large dogs, so owning a greyhound, mastiff, or a wolfhound was a symbol of status. A commoner with a large dog was assumed to be poaching large game. There was a hoop in each district, and a dog belonging to a commoner had to be small enough to fit through the hoop. Some courtiers could obtain special permission to keep their large dogs at court, but they had to be housed in the kennels to keep the palace "sweet, wholesome, clean and well furnished, as to a prince's house and state doth appertain."
Henry himself kept spaniels, beagles and hunting greyhounds. His Court fool, "Patch", is recorded as sleeping among the spaniels in the king's chamber. His greyhounds wore iron collars, some with toretts (spikes) on them. Sixty-five dog leashes were inventoried as being among the king's possessions when he died.
Henry's two favorite dogs, Cut and Ball, kept getting lost. Fortunately, Henry's lapdogs wore collars of velvet and kid leather with gold and silver Tudor rose and portcullis emblems on them, so the dogs could be instantly identified as belonging to the king. The king's accounts show payments of rewards to people who found them and returned them to the palace. They were given the large sum of fifteen shillings, which was the equivalent of a couple of hundred pounds today.

The English Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Schemeis the largest dog training programme in the UK and has been in operation since 1992. The Scheme is open to all dogs, young or old, pedigree or Crossbreed, whether Kennel Club registered or not. It provides a quality standard of training for dogs and owners, and incorporates many domestic obedience exercises, with over 481,000 certificates of achievement having being awarded to owners and their dogs who have successfully passed the scheme's tests. There are currently around 1,800 dog training clubs and other organisations around the country actively administering the scheme. Dog owners of any fitness level or disability can take part too. The Scheme is non-competitive and emphasis is placed on the standard of achievement. There are 4 levels of courses from Puppy Foundation, to Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.

There are may ways of enjoying competition with Cavaliers...conformation, obedience, agility, rally, dancing with dogs and much more....The Good Citizen Scheme is aother and there have been many Cavaliers and their owners who have excelled. Here are a few.

She has been the best thing to come into our lives as I have been battling breast cancer for the second time but I managed to qualify her for Crufts. The family adore her. Brenda's funeral is organised for Monday, 13th July at 2pm at Little Thetford Church where she will be buried in the village cemetery. Afterwards for afternoon tea at The Almonry in Ely. The family is requesting that people not wear black, as Brenda did not like mournful occasions and they would like the day to reflect her personality. So something Summery. In place of flowers a collection is being taken for the Eastern Counties Cavalier Rescue.RIP, Brenda.

19TH CENTURY

CAVALIERS.....information

wanted

Sir William Macarthur 1882

This charming photograph (courtesy of the State Library of NSW )was taken in Australia in 1882 and kindly sent to Chatterbox by Jenny Elsey. The man is Sir William Macarthur and the woman at the rear is his niece Elizabeth Macarthur-Onslow. The house is Camden Park House in New South Wales and the photo was taken at the back of the house. The date of the photo, 1882 is established as Sir William died in December 1882 and his niece is mourning for her husband Arthur Alexander Walton Onslow who died in January 1882.

Sir William Macarthur's father, John and his wife Elizabeth were early pioneers of the merino sheep in Australia and John is credited with being the ‘father of the wool industry’ (although Elizabeth herself did much of the work whilst he was absent). The family was very influentialover several generations.

Jenny has tried but failed to find any clues about the dogs or their origins and states "There are English and French connections via Sir William. Elizabeth Macarthur-Onslow visited her husband’s relatives on and off at Send Grove near Guidford in Surrey, and eventuallydied and was buried there. I think her uncle was more likely the one to bring the dogs back with him. His descendant says she knows nothing of them breeding these dogs, although the family was interested in herding/herd protection breeds (for their sheep flocks) and hunting dogs, so it’s quite possible they did breed the Toy Spaniel in a small way as family pets, which may have gone unremarked."  Any budding Sherlocks or Miss Marples out there who can investigate and throw any light on the dogs?

VERA RULES

DSC_0004

....almost forgot to mention our own CRAIGOWL VERA CRUZ who was 13 in April this year. A bit wobbly on her pins but never misses a meal, all her senses are razor sharp and she rules the house with a grumpy grumble when she is displeased. She asks for respect and gets it.

Screen-shot-2012-04-14-at-5-3_49_39-AM"Cavaliers can enter any

building in the land"Judy Wright (YOCKLEY)informs us "This is not correct. When I used to write the Pet Pages on the Cavalier Club website I wrote an entire article on this subject. My information came from a former Black Rod from the Houses of Parliament and also from the Master of the Rolls. The former used to own Cavaliers and he had them in his residence within Whitehall, but otherwise they received no special priviledge whatsoever. King Charles' word was absolute; he and his dogs went anywhere and everywhere...no one would stand up to him; his pack of dogs were loathed as they made such a mess wherever they went!
No Law has ever been on the Statute Books to allow Cavaliers entry to any building. It is widely, and wrongly thought that they were able to  enter the Houses of Parliament by right.....this was never the case."

So Judy is right and it would appear the Royal Decree is an Urban myth....but I did some digging and found this

http://www.parliament.uk/business/publications/parliamentary-archives/archives-practical/archives-faqs/records-frequently-asked-questions/#jump-link-22

“Contrary to popular rumour, there is no Act of Parliament referring to King Charles Spaniels being allowed anywhere in the Palace of Westminster. We are often asked this question and have thoroughly researched it. The House of Commons Information Office Factsheet G7 states that ‘Dogs, except guide dogs, are not generally allowed in the Palace of Westminster.’ There is no evidence whatsoever, that spaniels have ever been officially exempt from this rule, and any dogs which have been resident in the palace with their owners were confined to private apartments, such as the Speaker’s or Lord Chancellor’s residences, and not permitted free run through the palace. Having said that, there is one recorded example of a dog, other than a guide dog being in the House of Commons chamber. On page 309 of the House of Commons Journal, in the entry for 14 May 1606. It states that ‘A strange spanyell of mouse-colour came into the House."  so I am happy at least one little Spaniel Gentle got in!

.......AND THE MAGIC

Teddyrbis

Kevin Clinewrites from the USA "It is with a heavy heart that we report the loss of Champion Pascavale Enchanted. We were hoping to celebrate 'Teddy’s' 14th Birthday today but unfortunately he left us just a few days early. He lived a very full life and will be missed by those that loved him so dearly. Special condolences go to his breeders Mark Sedgwick and Michael Levywho bred and campaigned him to his British crown and Paula Ayers and Brenda Martzwho cared for him when he arrived in the US for some years. Over the last several years it has truly been a privilege to care for him and have him as a part of our family, sleeping on my youngest daughter’s bed. In addition, he has directly and indirectly touched the lives of many people all over the world.  We would like to celebrate his life by reflecting on his accomplishments and remembering this remarkablyinfluential and sweet-natured cavalier.
"Teddy" leaves behind a tremendous legacy. His influence as a stud dog is profound and is realized not only in his direct progeny but by several generations of their progeny as well.  He has sired 8 British Champions, over 15 European Champions, 22 CKCSC USA Champions and 63 AKC Champions.11737053_10152860236927352_1080655993_n
He sired offspring on four continentsincluding a one time top CC holder in the UK, the top cavalier in France for several years and the all time top winning Cavalier in the CKCSC, USA to date.  He was the top sire in the UK for three years 2004/05/06 including top toy stud dog in 2006.  He was the top sire in the CKCSC, USA for four consecutive years from 2008 through 2011.  Additionally, he is the overall top all time Sire to date in the CKCSC, USA and tied for the top Cavalier sire of all time in the AKC. He has earned a Register Of Merit in the CKCSC and AKC and a Legion Of  Merit in the AKC, having produced at least three progeny that have obtained their Register Of Merit. How proud Mark and Michael can be breeding such a remarkable legacy. 11721201_10152860237797352_182821721_n
All of this considered, perhaps the best attribute that he passed along was his loving and sweet personality. He never met a stranger, loving every person and cavalier that he encountered.

CH Pascavale Enchanted, you were a once in a lifetime dog; a true star among stars. You will forever be cherished in our hearts and you will live forever through your future generations."

Our animals shepherd us through certain areas of our lives. When we are ready to turn the corner and make it on our own… they let us go."  ~Author unknown

Every generation sees Cavaliers that stand away from the crowd...."Teddy" was one of those dogs. One, that as breeders, we all wanted to have bred.....RIP sweet boy, you were very special....Norma, on behalf of the Cavalier world .

 ROCKY AT THE GAMESImages

The  Pan American Games  is a major sporting event in the Americas featuring summer sports, in which thousands of athletes participate in a variety of competitions. The competition is held among athletes from nations of the Americas, every four years in the year before the Summer Olympic Games. The Pan American Games are currently being held in Toronto, Canada from 10th -26th July.

For the first time in the program’s 20 year history, 125 St. John Ambulance therapy dogs will attend a major sporting event as athletes from 41 countries gather for the Games. "Rocky" seen above is one of the chosen few and will be joined by owner Evelyn Morrow at the Nottawasaga Inn Resort satellite location and at the Pan Am Village in downtown Toronto. After five minutes with "Rocky" it’s easy to see what makes him a good therapy dog. He’s friendly but not intruding, gentle but not frail. He is 9 years old and puts people at ease. Next week he’ll be exercising that ability with the Games’ athletes.

Rescued from a shelter when he was about a year old, Rocky has lived with Ms. Morrow since 2007. She saw his potential as a therapy dog and took a closer look at the St. John Ambulance program, which the two have been a part of since 2009.  "I thought he would be a good fit because he loves everybody. He’s just a very gentle dog. For the athletes at the Pan Am Games, it’s a stress reliever for them."

 DRINKING FOUNTAIN

91GcrgoiFcL__SL1500_

In nature, moving water is much fresher than stagnant water. The movement constantly breaks the surface tension of the water and draws oxygen from the air into the water. This process is called aeration and it makes the water more appealing to drink. Pets may be drawn by instinct to moving water for this reason. Research shows that one of the best ways to improve your pet’s health is to get them to drink more water, and the best way to do that is with the Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain. The Pet Fountain filters and aerates continuously moving water to keep it much fresher than standing bowl water. In addition, the constant circulation inhibits bacteria growth keeping the pet fountain cleaner. The Drinkwell Pet Fountains satisfy a pet’s urge for fresh running water and provides peace-of-mind to pet owners who know their pets have a good supply of clean water. Pet Fountains encourage pets to drink more water and for this reason are recommended by Vet Urinary Specialists.

DOGS DUMPED AS THEY CEASE TO BE A FASHION ITEM

8e1c6cdabd93926e600047f80f4cb91e
Designer 'handbag' dogs made popular by celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Simon Cowell are now the most dumped in Britain, charity bosses revealed. A study found the number of "handbag" dogs handed in to the Blue Cross Animal Charity has increased by 120 per cent in the last five years.

The charity is now urging potential owners to do their research properly before buying a dog, rather than following the latest celebrity trend.Kellie Brookes, Blue Cross rehoming centre manager, said: "Sadly, people often think these little dogs won't be much trouble to care for and it's often too late when they realise they don't have time. People may also think that breeding 'handbag' pups is a good way to make a bit of money, but it can be more difficult to find good homes for them than you imagine.

The top five 'handbag' breeds handed into Blue Cross rehoming centres last year were:

  1. Yorkshire Terrier 92 in 2014  (65 in 2009)
  2. Chihuahua 53 in 2014 (0 in 2009)
  3. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 36 in 2014 (14 in 2009)
  4. Bichon Frise (28 In 2014 (13 in 2009)
  5. Shih Tzu 31 in 2014 (17 in 2009)

DOGS GET THEIR OWN PARK

Henry, a 7 year old Cavalier romps, plays ball and basks in the sun at the newly opened Easton Dog Parkin Connecticut, USA. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Most people in Easton have large yards, but most are not fenced. Even if they have an electric fence for their dog, they can’t have a friend’s dog over to play and run off leash. The dog park is a place where dogs and humans can meet up and have fun together. There are of course "dos and donts"  to be adhered to so that dogs and humans can interact safely and with consideration.

SUPER HEROES

Artist_transforms_3

Minnesota-based illustrator and comic book fan Josh Lynch had been wanting to do portraits of his family's dogs for a long time. But instead of boring, old photos or sketches, he went for a style that truly reflected him and his canines' personalities by portraying them as Marvel comic book characters. Josh has put together a marvellous series of illustrations depicting Marvel superheroes and villains as man's best friend. He has uses different breeds to portray a handful of characters such as Doctor Strange (his own Cavalier, Miles ) and Spider-Man(Pug)

FIND A BIN TO PUT IT IN

  Geoff Heslop Litter Hero

Since moving to Ponteland in Northumberland  in England,  54 years ago, 88 year old Geoff Heslop has kept Darras Hall a litter-free zone by declaring his own personal war on rubbish by immediately taking litter off the streets. And his dedication to his work over the years, which currently sees him covering around ten miles on foot each week collecting litter with his Cavalier, has prompted Castle Morpeth Borough Council to declare him a “local litter hero”. Director of customer services for the council, Paul Johnston, said: “Mr Heslop is just the sort of resident we like to encourage. His daily walk up to his local shops is a litter-free zone thanks to his hard work. Estimating he has collected somewhere in the region of three tonnes of litter discarded by the publicin the last 50 year. If every housing estate had someone like Geoff, then the areas in which we live and bring up our children would be spick and span and we are greatly indebted to him" The Darras Road resident goes out every morning with Cavalier "Nery" to buy a paper, armed with two bin bags and a picker supplied by the Darras Hall Estate Committee, of which he is a trustee. And on his evening stroll with "Nery", Geoff also picks up whatever he finds.

THE SAD PASSING

CHNu MILETREE MONTESUMA OF LONDONCOR

Mui (2)

It was with great sadness that the Cavalier world heard of the tragic death of one of its brightest stars. The lovely Champion boy of Cesar Cortes and Marta Londono was cruelly taken by a road accident a few weeks ago. "Uno" was bred by Ruta and Peter Towse and was the pride and joy of Colombian born, but London based Cesar. He had a glittering show career, reached dizzy heights winning many prestigious shows and was a wonderful ambassador for our breed with his fearless and fun loving showmanship. A great favourite of mine and together with so many others I admired him on so many occasions.  RIP "UNO"...ALWAYS NUMBER ONE IN MANY HEARTS

 ...and a Champion in another

field passes

IMG_0282
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Blenheim, Cookie, who served as a Therapy Dog for Deaf Children. She was the companion of our Ruby boy, Winston. During her 11 years and 10 months on this earth she touched the hearts and souls of many people including her work with  hearing impaired children. Although they may suffer from anatomic heart problems the true emotional heart of the Cavalier will never be equaled by any other canine breed. Good bye dear Cookie, may your soul rest peacefully in heaven with all those you have helped. Gregg L. Friedman MD

Cavaliers excel in different fields...many don't have titled certificates but are Champions all the same for what they contribute...

THE RUSSIAN CAVALIER CLUB…..1STSPECIALTY SHOW

 NOWazSjqsNw

It was an honour to be invited to judge the 1ST Russian Cavalier Club show held on 31st May 2015 in Moscow. This was my first visit so it was very special. The flight to Moscow took just over 3 hours from London. I was met at the airport by Elena Lomokhova and Svetlana Lukashova DSC_0002whose grasp of the English language made it very easy for me, as my Russian is non-existent! The taxi ride from Domodedova airport to my hotel allowed me to catch my first glimpse of Moscow and I was fascinated. I  had 2 days sightseeing arranged for Friday and Saturday before the show on Sunday and I could hardly wait. 278A quiet relaxing dinner in the hotel that night before bed was very welcome. Friday was day one of sightseeing and that meant a trip on the Metro where I could see the beautifully decorated spotlessly clean stations. So spectacular. 0BThen it was into the centre of Moscow and a wonderful guided tour of the Bolshoi theatre where I was fortunate enough to have been given a ticket for that evening’s performance of ‘Onegin’ 16then a walk around the Nova Divichy Convent.
This is what dreams are made of and it was an incredible experience for me. My perfect companion for the ballet evening was Liudmila Glukhova and it is something that I will never forget. 194

The next day was a full one, taking in the Red Square and the Kremlin where we arrived to see The Ceremonial Changing of Foot & Cavalry Guards of the President’s Regiment and a band! The Cossacks display of horsemanship was terrific. We explored as much of the Kremlin as was 100possible and my eyes popped too see the gems in the Diamond Fund and then the magnificence of the Churches with their copulas, icons, tombs and frescos. I was so lucky to be seeing all this. Our afternoon finished with a trip to the main department store in Moscow and a supermarket to see how they compare to the ones back home. My camera was working overtime! It had been a long, lots of walking, sort of day but I would not have missed it for the world. Such memories.154

Show day arrived…what I had come to Russia for. The day was warm and sunny and I arrived at the show venue where the organisers had been working hard to get things organised. My ring steward was charming and her English made it fairly easy for us to converse. The hall was light and airy and a good size for the number of dogs and their owners.

My findings...There were 97 Cavaliers entered (36 males and 61 females) and I understand that is the largest entry of Cavaliers there has ever been in Russia. And as I was the first breeder/judge to be invited from the UK, it was such a compliment to me that people were keen to have my opinion. Some, I later learned, had come vast distances to the show. The absentee rate was low, only 14. The 18 classes (9 for each sex)consistedofBaby, Puppy, Junior, Intermediate, Open, Winner, Champion (2) and Veteran.Followed at the end by aBrace,Breeders Group and 2 Progeny Groupsand finallyBest Head and Best Mover.

As happens in most countries there were more Blenheimsthan any of the other colours, followed by Tricoloursand only a sprinkling of Wholecolourswhich was a pity.

I graded the dogs:-

Adults…42 Excellent, 21 VeryGood, 3 Goodand 1 NotJudged (nervous on the day)

Babies and Puppies….9 Very Promising and 6Promising and 1Not Judged.

Wherever you judge in the world you will find the same construction problems and today there was a variety of issues that need to be addressed. Cavaliers that were way too big and heavy, much too little and fine, too long in back, gay tails, small eyes, poor fronts and rears, deep stops like the King Charles. But on the plus side, there were very few light eyes, temperaments on the whole were good with friendly, cheerful Cavaliers, coat colours and texture were very good and poor nose pigment and bad mouths were not excessive.

I would guess that a number of the dogs exhibited were much loved family pets and came purely to support the Club. Whilst providing loving homes for their Cavaliers they have no real ambitions to breed or show on a regular basis. I understood this. My comments were aimed at the Russian breeders and exhibitors who want to see the breed improve and be part of that process. "Never double up on a fault if you are breeding and don’t over compensate by going too far in the other direction. Use dogs where possible who are correct in the area you are trying to improve upon."

I tried to give a balanced report on what I found with each dog, as it is of no use whatsoever to give a wonderful glowing report if that is not the case. The judge’s honest opinion, highlighting both the strength and the weaknesses found is far more beneficial to the breed and the exhibitor than one which is overly flattering and avoids mentioning the defects found. Equally as damaging is a judge whose report only dwells on the dogs failings. My ring secretary worked hard to understand my English and doggy terminology! It may help in the future if the secretary writes the report, as dictated by the judge, in the judge’s own language. That lessens the possibility of the ring secretary, who may not always be familiar with the Cavalier standard, misinterpreting or losing in translation what the judge is trying to convey. The exhibitor can then translate their own critiques either by asking someone who is adept in that language or use Google….!

I felt that the quality of the top winning dogs would ensure their place in good company anywhere in the world…and I have been all over the world judging our breed.

"If your dog has only a few minutes to impress the judge he needs to make the most of himself and you need to play your part and make sure he is washed, clean and groomed. He must be used to walking on a lead and be able to be handled on the table by the judge. If there are not opportunities for your dog to learn show training take a few minutes daily practicing at home and get friends and family to handle him….this will help a lot."

I was seeking a small, balanced, well-made dog with a typical head and expression and outgoing personality. I tried to judge and appreciate the whole dog and not over penalise an exhibit for any one fault. No dog is perfect so I was not looking for perfection.

At the end of judging I enjoyed the social side of the day relaxing, eating, drinking and talking with my new friends. The refreshments, especially the commemorative cakes, were most beautiful and very tasty.   171

I went back to work after the break and gave a talk on the Breed Standard, with colour photographs of many of our own Champions to highlight the points I was making. My talk had been translated in advance and leaflets provided. I also had a translator for any questions that cropped up.

It seemed to go well.

It was nice for me to give something back to the Club who had been so generous in inviting me and looked after me so well. I went home with fabulous gifts that will in years to come, remind me of my
trip.IMG_2779

If I were asked to give advice to breeders/exhibitors I would say be honest with yourselves. Look at your dogs, read and understand the breed standard, look again at what you are breeding/showing and be critical. See the areas that need improving and acknowledge them. There is always room for improvement. The opinion of honest, knowledgeable judges is a help but at the end of the day it is you the breeders who make the decisions and chose in what direction your breeding programmes are to go. I saw some lovely typical Cavaliers at the show and put to good use, the Russian Cavaliers will go from strength to strength. The Internet has made it easier to view dogs around the world and travelling with dogs has never been easier. I wish you all the very best….and when I come back (and I will!) I feel sure the quality will have risen.
